DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

UTILIZE INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS

• Ensure each member of your team has created an Individual Development Plan (IDP). • Talk to each member of your team about their own IDP and how you can help support them. • Look for commonalities across all the IDPs on your team, and then find resources that can help everyone grow at the same time.

CREATE STRETCH ASSIGNMENTS

• Assign stretch assignments to one or a few members of your team. These stretch assignments would take someone out of their current comfort zone in terms of knowledge, skill, or ability but would not be impossible for them to achieve. • Set up check-in meetings to ensure that the individual has support and the resources they need. • Ensure that you, or a subject matter expert, are available for questions as needed.

DISCUSS CAREER PATHS

• Discuss career paths with your team and highlight that the vertical path is not the only route to grow one’s career. Sometimes the best way to grow is through lateral moves. • Highlight the career paths of successful colleagues in the organization and have those colleagues attend a team meeting to discuss their own career paths.

SEEK KNOWLEDGE

• Proactively look for information that would be useful for your team to learn. Information can be found in the

Commons>Learning Hub, and is also available online through TED talks, free online courses, and other sites. • Ask your team to create a list of relevant books, websites, that they have found helpful in their career and share that list with your team. • Ask your peers to provide you with relevant learning resources and share it with the team.

CREATE MENTORSHIPS

• Work with you team members to understand their individual career goals and interests. • Have your team members present you with a list of a few mentors they would like to work with • Review the information your team members provided and try to connect them to mentors that will help them grow in their career.
