EMPOWER DECISION MAKING • • • •
Suggest that colleagues come to you with recommended decisions for any issues they encounter. Have your direct report verbalize the pros and cons of their recommended approach. Guide your direct report to the solutions vs. handing them the solutions. Create clear parameters for which situations your team has the authority to make decisions within.
CONNECT JOBS TO ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS • •
During check-in meetings be sure to clarify the connection between the role your team member is playing and the importance to the department, institution, and Adtalem. Ask your employees to think of ways that their roles connect with the strategy of the department, institution, and Adtalem.
INQUIRE ABOUT RESOURCES • • •
Make a habit of asking your team if there is anything further they need to do their jobs effectively. Inquire with team members in your check ins regarding if they need any additional resources. Keep a running list of ideas to streamline work. The idea that could not be implemented previously may be able to be implemented in time.
BENCHMARK/RESEARCH • • •
Task some members of your team to do research on how similar departments in other institutions are handling their work. Send team members to industry specific meetings to learn the latest information on your work. Subscribe to industry specific literature (e.g., magazines, professional associations) and share the most relevant articles with your team.
COLLABORATE • •
Have your team brainstorm ideas for addressing any opportunities for improvement and present their recommendations back to you. Remember Adtalem is a large organization with many experts in various domains. Find colleagues with the right expertise to help you devise better solutions for your target audience.
