Report from Washington State By Alysha Holmquist, WA-AATG President
By Angel Lane, President, AZ Chapter “AATG-WA is looking forward to coming together again in -person as we continue to meet online to share ideas.”
The Washington State chapter of AATG, in this ever-changing teaching environment, has continued to adapt with online zoom events and meetings. The chapter traditionally meets every September for a general meeting and professional development. While the last two years’ meetings have occurred over Zoom, meetings usually take place high in the Cascade Mountains at the Berghaus in Hyak. Some teachers come early Friday night for friendly Beisammensein (and libations!) and enjoy a tasty breakfast together. Professional development for the whole group takes place after the general meeting, and then break-out professional development for elementary and secondary teachers after a hearty lunch. In September 2020 we had great virtual presentations by Susanne Rinner (Goethe/ SPARK), Gabi Mais-Minkler (ZfA), and Ben Fisher (Bothell HS). Alysha Holmquist (Enumclaw HS) presented virtually in 2021. They’re really looking forward to being together again in September 2022!
By Jennifer McArthur, Staff Writer Speaking of Herr Ben Fisher of Bothell High School, he won the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award in 2021! He began teaching both German and Spanish at Bothell High School in 2019 after the great Lynne Kalstadt retired. He had big shoes to fill and certainly lived up to it! Focusing on teaching using Comprehensible Input, he also was recently interviewed by the podcast Preaching to Acquire about supporting LGBTQ+ students in the classroom.

Way to go, Ben! For more about language teaching from Ben, check out his website: mrfishersays.com Another esteemed honor given in Washington State recently was the AATG Friend of German Award. This distinction recognizes leadership in advocacy for German language and education by someone outside the teaching profession. The award was given in 2020 to Western Washington native Chris Barnes, who attended the AATG-WA spring immersion overnight camp each year in Lederhosen with his accordion and jovial personality. Even after he retired and moved away from Western Washington, Chris would drive to the camp each spring to wake up students with his Ziehharmonika. We’re hoping he can join us at German language camp again next year after our pandemic break. In 2019, West Valley High School in Yakima became an AATG Center of Excellence before the retirement of their amazing teacher Rick Beck, who began the German program in his district and taught there for 29 years. Rick also won the very first AATG Outstanding GAPP Coordinator Award in 2020. The program was taken over by Deborah Abbo, who came to WA with 14 years of teaching experience from Colorado.

Rick Beck was AATG-WA treasurer for many years before passing that baton to colleague Kathy Lockwood, who
teaches at Cascade High School in Everett. Her student, Onima, was recently selected as a juror for the upcoming Berlin & Beyond Film Festival in San Francisco and was given an all-expenses-paid trip, complete with a film workshop and walking the red carpet before presenting the Youth 4 German Cinema Awards. Kudos to Kathy for providing her students the opportunity to participate in this exclusive experience! Susanne Rinner was principal of the German Language School in Seattle for three years, and also a visiting associate professor at The Ray Wolpow Institute For the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Crimes Against Humanity at Western Washington University (WWU) for two years. WWU is home to a stellar German program which was awarded the AATG Center of Excellence distinction in 2013. Susanne is currently the program director for the Goethe Institute's SPARK program. For more information, please visit at their website: http://sparkforgerman.org/ Each Fall, a local AATG-WA school hosts the German Student Convention, which invites WA German programs to come together for German games, food, prizes, and break-out classes. In December 2020 the great German musician Eddi Hüneke, previously of the Wise Guys, gave an interactive online performance for German students featuring his new songs, along with some favorite Weihnachtslieder. The song lyrics were sent out in advance of the concert, and students could participate in polls and Q&A online with Eddi. It was so cool! In 2021, the German Student Convention was again online, but this time 19 schools participated in the Washington State German Day. After a day of visiting the Goethe Institute’s Wanderbus and enjoying gifts of GI color-changing pencils and Gummibärchen, students were invited to compete against other programs in a Kahoot-facilitated by Goethe Institut NY. Congratulations to the student team at Enumclaw High School, who won the Kahoot and a pizza party!
AATG-WA is looking forward to coming together again in-person as we continue to meet online to share ideas. Currently, schools have been invited to participate in a state-wide März Musik Manie bracket created by Kathy Lockwood (Cascade HS), Tobias Gruenthal (Bishop Blanchet HS) and Alysha Holmquist (Enumclaw HS). Teachers are collaborating on teaching the songs, as well as comparing their student’s choices. They’re looking forward to seeing which song each school chooses as the 2022 Sieger. Leadership of AATG-WA will soon be passing from Alysha Holmquist (Enumclaw HS) to Andrea Seidl, who came to Washington from Massachusetts and is currently AATG-WA Vice President. During this stage, you take part in the grant activity or project and document the experience with photos, notes, and/or receipts for reimbursement. This will set you up for your reporting stage of your grant, which shows AATG grant donors the value of funding grants for German teachers in the U.S.

THE GERMAN QUARTERLY Hester Baer
We appreciate the opportunity to introduce ourselves to the AATG community: we are Hester Baer of the University of Maryland and Karin Schutjer of the University of Oklahoma, the new co-editors of The German Quarterly. This is a thrilling time to be associated with GQ! Founded in 1928, and long regarded as the flagship journal of Germanistik in the US, GQ now has a global reach, with over 6000 library subscriptions on six continents and over 19,000 downloads each year. The scholarly purview of the journal has also vastly expanded over the years, from a traditional focus on German philology and literary history to a broad embrace of interdisciplinary, transnational cultural studies, thus reflecting the diversity and dynamism of our ever-changing field. While the journal has been led for most of its nearly century-long history by a single editor-in-chief, we thought we could best serve its mission in the role of co-editors. We both believe that collaboration leads to a better result, fostering greater diversity and equity, smarter decisions, enhanced creativity, and new perspectives that emerge through dialogue. We also bring different and complementary scholarly interests and experiences. Hester is a scholar of cinema and media studies, feminism, and twentieth and twenty-first century literature and culture, who has experience as a co-editor of the journal Feminist German Studies. Karin is a scholar of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century literature with interdisciplinary interests in philosophy, religion, and social thought, who previously served as the editor of the book series New Studies in the Age of Goethe at Bucknell University Press. Yet the two of us are also natural partners because we worked closely as colleagues for eleven years in a small German program at the University of Oklahoma. As a result, we know and trust each other’s fundamental values and commitments, including mentoring, access, fairness, and diversity.

We have special issues on Black German studies and pre-1700 German studies in the works. ● We are planning outreach webinars to demystify the editorial process and to offer mentoring and guidance especially for early career scholars. Our book review editors Necia Chronister of Kansas State University and Elliott Schreiber of Vassar College recently brought together their colleagues from three other top German studies journals for “The Art of the Book Review: Best (and Worst) Practices,” a virtual roundtable that attracted nearly 100 participants. We plan additional webinars on how to write a scholarly article and how to offer helpful critical feedback in composing peer reviews. ● We are expanding the journal’s digital and social media presence. We encourage you to follow and engage with us on Facebook and Twitter, where we will post information about new initiatives as well as links to open-access articles. Executive Director Report Planning for the future Dear AATG Colleagues, I remember vividly how a high school group trip to Germany changed my perspective on the world. It showed me how useful a second language can be, broadened my horizons in new ways, and challenged me to think differently about the world. It also gave me a new appreciation for some aspects of my home as well. So it is with immense pleasure that I signed a new, decade long agreement with the PAD-KMK this past week in Berlin. We are already working to find new ways to cooperate on transatlantic partnerships at all levels and with all types of
schools. Global skills, multilingual education, and programs abroad should not be reserved for a few elite schools and universities. The AATG and the PAD are working to increase access to our programs through new partnerships, new exchange programs, and new funding models. For me these are exciting times for transatlantic exchange between Germany and the US. These programs are supported by our partners and by our generous donors. Please encourage your students to apply for scholarships through the AATG and if you have the means, donate to one of the endowed funds to help the next generation of students access the best programs possible. Die Ukraine: Mit großer Bestürzung reagiert das Goethe-Institut auf den russischen Angriff auf die Ukraine. Generalsekretär Johannes Ebert sagte: „Wir sind schockiert von der aktuellen Situation in der Ukraine. Unsere Gedanken sind bei den Kolleginnen und Kollegen und Partnern im Land und bei ihren Familien. PASCHtopia – ein virtuelles Spiel für Deutschlernende Beim Deutschlernen gemeinsam ein Abenteuer erleben? Das mirobasierte Spiel PASCHtopia steht unter dem Thema „Utopie und Vision“ und entführt die Teilnehmer*innen auf eine unbewohnte Inselgruppe – mit vielen Herausforderungen. Das Spiel basiert auf den methodisch-didaktischen Prinzipien für guten Fremdsprachenunterricht und richtet sich an jugendliche Deutschlernende ab Niveau A2. Über ihren Browser greifen maximal 30 Spielende direkt, kostenfrei und ohne Log-in auf das mirobasierte Spielbrett zu. Die Kommunikation zwischen den Jugendlichen findet auf Zoom oder direkt im Klassenraum statt. Das Spiel kann als Ganzes im Rahmen eines Camps oder einer Projektwoche eingesetzt werden oder modular in Teilen im Deutschunterricht, im Deutschklub oder in einer Konversationsgruppe gespielt werden. Sechs Teams schafften es in das große Finale am Samstag, den 13. November 2021. Die Teams hatten 60 Minuten Zeit, um Puzzle und Challenge der vierten Spielrunde zu meistern. Nach Ablauf der Zeit haben die Spieler*innen, Zuschauer*innen und Game Coaches über das beste Ergebnis abgestimmt. Wir gratulieren allen Gewinner*innen! 1. Internationale Deutscholympiade (IDO) Chelsey Gilbert und Lauren Guo gewinnen die nationale IDO Endrunde Die Schüler*innen Chelsey Gilbert (Monroe High School, Wisconsin) und Lauren Guo (Ralston Ralley High School, Colorado) haben die nationale Endrunde der Internationalen Deutscholympiade (IDO) gewonnen. Nun werden die beiden im Sommer 2022 nach Hamburg reisen und die USA im internationalen Finale des größten Wettbewerbs der deutschen Sprache vertreten. In einer Online-Phase und im zweitägigen Wettbewerb in Chicago setzten sich die beiden gegen 385 Mitstreiter*innen aus 28 Staaten durch. Chelsey Gilbert (A2-Niveau)
und Lauren Guo (B1 Niveau) bewiesen in der nationalen Endrunde nicht nur landeskundliche und sprachliche Deutschkompetenzen, sondern auch Kreativität und Teamgeist. Im Interview mit dem Goethe-Institut Chicago berichten Chelsey Gilbert und Lauren Guo über ihre Faszination mit der deutschen Sprache und die Teilnahme an der IDO. Goethe-Institut (GI): Was war dein Highlight der nationalen IDO Endrunde in Chicago? Chelsey Gilbert (CG): Der Besuch zum Christkindlmarkt wurde abgesagt, da schon zu viele Leute dort waren. So sind wir zurück in das GoetheInstitut gegangen und haben Weihnachtslieder zusammen gesungen. Wir haben getanzt, Spiele gespielt und Kekse gegessen. Es ist etwas an dieser Gemeinschaft, das ich nicht beschreiben kann und ich werde es nie vergessen. Für mich bedeuten diese kleinen Momente alles. Lauren Guo (LG): Mein Highlight bei der nationalen Endrunde in Chicago war die gesamte Veranstaltung. Ich hatte nicht erwartet, so gut abzuschneiden. Ich habe es genossen, an den Projekten zu arbeiten (obwohl ich sehr nervös war), Sehenswürdigkeiten zu besichtigen und einfach nur dort zu sein.
GI: Mit welchen Gefühlen blickst du auf die bevorstehende IDO in Hamburg? CG: Es ist ein verrückter Traum, der wahr geworden ist. Ich kann es noch kaum glauben, dass ich die USA in der IDO vertreten werde. Ich bin so dankbar für diese Gelegenheit und ich bin überwältigt. Vor allem will ich Spaß haben und neue Freunde kennenlernen – das ist immer am Wichtigsten! LG: Ich bin sehr nervös wegen der bevorstehenden IDO, aber ich bin auch aufgeregt. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, was mich erwartet, aber ich bin zuversichtlich, dass die IDO gut verlaufen wird. Ich weiß nicht, ob das der Fall sein wird, aber ich bin dankbar für diese Gelegenheit. GI: Was macht dir am Deutsch lernen besonders Spaß? CG: Es ist eine wunderschöne Sprache mit viel Emotion. Ich lese und schreibe selbst Gedichte auf Deutsch und es macht so viel Spaß, mit den Wörtern und natürlichem Rhythmen der Sprache zu spielen. LG: Mein Lieblingsaspekt beim Deutsch lernen ist die Anwendung meines Wissens abseits des Unterrichts. Bei meinen Recherchen stoße ich manchmal auf deutschsprachige Quellen und ich finde es hilfreich, die Informationen zu verstehen, ohne dass ich eine Übersetzung brauche. GI: Hast du ein Lieblingswort im Deutschen? Wenn ja: Welches ist es und warum? CG: Ja, ich habe ein Lieblingswort: es ist „Teletubbyzurückwinker“. Deutsche Beleidigungen sind immer die besten, nichts oder niemand kann meine Meinung ändern. Es gibt nichts Ähnliches in der englischen Sprache. LG: Mein Lieblingswort im Deutschen ist "Wolkenkuckucksheim". Ich kannte bereits das englische Äquivalent und war von den Ähnlichkeiten (vor allem wegen der gemeinsamen Etymologie) ziemlich überrascht. Und ich halte es auch ohne die Verbindung zu anderen Sprachen für ein gutes Wort. Liebe Kolleginnen, liebe Kollegen, das vergangene Jahr endete mit vielen Preisverleihungen: Vom Kreativwettbewerb über Jugend debattiert Nordamerika bis zum German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award, in allen Sparten waren und sind Schüler:innen und Lehrer:innen von DSDSchulen erfolgreich. Bei der Tagung der Schulleitungen der deutschen Sprachschulen und der Fortbildung Grundlagen der Unterrichtsentwicklung gab es zwar keine Preise, aber die Möglichkeit, sich persönlich auszutauschen und neue Erkenntnisse zu gewinnen. Wir bedanken uns bei allen Beteiligten für ihr großartiges Engagement und wünschen für das kommende Jahr alles Gute und weiterhin viel Erfolg! ZfA Kreativwettbewerb 2021 "Guten Tag – Hallo Deutschland" Nach dem Motto "Guten Tag- Hallo Deutschland" konnten als Beitrag für den diesjährigen Kreativwettbewerb "Begrüßungs-Geschichten" oder an "Deutschland gerichtete Nachrichten" aller Art in Form von Schreibprodukten, Hörspielen und Videos im Einzel- oder Gruppenwettbewerb erzählt werden. Dabei konnten Nachrichten zum Thema gemacht werden, die als "Nachricht des Tages" nach Deutschland geschickt werden sollten oder es konnte zum Thema gemacht werden, wie man sich in Deutschland "begrüßt", was man an Deutschland "begrüßenswert" findet oder wie ein "begrüßenswerter" Tag in Deutschland aussehen könnte. Viele kreative Beiträge von Schülern der Klassenstufen 3-11 aus den gesamten USA wurden trotz der Pandemie eingereicht, welche anschließend von einer unparteiischen Jury unter Beteiligung des Deutschen Generalkonsulats Atlanta bewertet wurden.
Es fiel den Jurymitgliedern bei der großen Auswahl an kreativen Beiträgen, wie beispielsweise spannende Kurznachrichten an Deutschland, Gedichte zu deutschen Begrüßungen bis hin zu Hörspielen und Videos mit Begrüßungsliedern, Wortassoziationsketten oder Nachrichten aus Zeitmaschinen, erneut nicht leicht, die Gewinner festzulegen. Alle Gewinnerbeiträge werden, wie gewohnt, in einer Broschüre sowie online veröffentlicht, so dass diese hervorragend im Unterricht eingesetzt werden können und als Inspiration für zukünftige Beiträge für den nächsten Kreativwettbewerb 2022 dienen können. Die 25 Gewinner können sich auf viele wertvolle Preise und auf eine offizielle Urkunde freuen. Wir ZfA-Fachberatungen möchten uns besonders für die Einsendung der vielen guten Beiträge trotz der Pandemie sowohl bei den Schülern als auch bei den engagierten Deutschlehrkräften bedanken. Für die diesjährige Ausrichtung und Beteiligung an der Jurysitzung danken wir der Halle Foundation und den diesjährigen Jurymitgliedern und freuen uns schon jetzt auf viele spannende Beiträge von den Schülern im nächsten Jahr. Zum ersten Mal: Jugend debattiert in Nordamerika Jugend debattiert ist ein etablierter Schülerwettbewerb auch außerhalb Deutschlands. Der nationale Wettbewerb feierte in diesem Jahr seinen 20. Geburtstag. Seit 2006 gibt es den Wettstreit um das beste Argument in Osteuropa, etablierte sich bald in China und ist auch seit 2016 an deutschen Sprachschulen in Südamerika populär. Nordamerika war bislang ein weißer Fleck auf der Jugend-debattiert-Weltkarte. Bis zu diesem Jahr!
Die sechzehn Jugendlichen debattierten über die Fragen, ob Fleischwaren mit Schockfotos versehen werden sollten und ob Siedlungen in Waldbrandgebieten aufgegeben werden sollten, während im Wettkampfbüro fieberhaft gerechnet wurde: Denn am Ende mussten unter den sechzehn Talenten die vier Finalistinnen und Finalisten ermittelt werden. Im Finale – nach der Begrüßung des Deutschen Generalkonsuls aus San Francisco, Oliver Schramm – ging es zur Sache: „Soll der Patentschutz für COVID-Impfstoffe aufgehoben werden?“
Die enorme Resonanz zeigte sich in der Anmeldung von 96 Schüler:innen von dreißig Schulen aus allen Teilen der USA, Kanada und Mexico. Nach 10 Online-Workshops qualifizierten sich die besten sechzehn für das Nordamerika-Finale vom 2. bis 6. November in San Francisco.
Diese Debatte war von großer Sachkenntnis und Gesprächsfähigkeit geprägt und stand einer Finaldebatte in Deutschland in Nichts nach.
In einem zweitägigen Training wiederholten und vertieften die Jugendlichen in Präsenz, was sie in der Online-Phase gelernt haben. Daneben war Zeit für ein Picknick an der Bucht von San Francisco, eine Fahrt zur Golden-Gate-Bridge und für eine Fahrt mit der berühmten Cable Car.
Am Ende überzeugte der siebzehnjährige Alexander Krull von der German School of the East Bay in Oakland/ Kalifornien die Jurys mit seinem Detailwissen und seinen messerscharfen Analysen am meisten. Auf dem zweiten Platz landete Mary Blackstock von der Deutschen Schule Charlotte in North Carolina, gefolgt von Elliot Atherton (British International School of Houston, Texas) und Jia Ding (DSB Bloomfield, Michigan). Alex ist überglücklich über seinen Erfolg: „Jugend debattiert“ war eine der besten Erfahrungen meines Lebens. Ich habe tolle Leute und neue Freunde kennengelernt. Die Debatten waren sehr spannend und ich konnte natürlich mein Deutsch verbessern.“ Alexander darf am 2. Dezember an der Weltdebatte online teilnehmen. Dort trifft er auf die Sieger des Osteuropa-, des Südamerika- und des China-Finals. Und im Juni 2022 ist er zum bundesdeutschen Finale nach Berlin eingeladen.

Alexander wird für immer der erste Sieger des Nordamerika-Finales sein. Aber ihm werden hoffentlich noch viele Finalistinnen und Finalisten folgen, denn die Planungen für das nächste Jahr haben schon begonnen.

Verleihung des “German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award” Viele Deutschlehrkräfte leisten bei der Vermittlung von Deutsch als Fremdsprache in den USA hervorragende Arbeit. Um dieser Arbeit Anerkennung zu zollen, zeichnet die Deutsche Botschaft Washington in Zusammenarbeit dem AATG jedes Jahr drei besonders herausragende, aufstrebende und vielversprechende US-Deutschlehrkräfte mit dem „German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award“ aus. Dieser Preis geht an Lehrkräfte, die aufgrund ihrer herausragenden Fähigkeiten im didaktischen und methodischen Bereich, des Einsatzes von neuen Medien im Unterricht, des interkulturellen Bezugs der Lerninhalte und der Kompetenzorientierung bei der Leistungsmessung, wie z.B. dem Einsatz von DSD-Prüfungen in Ergänzung zu USAmerikanischen Prüfungen) von verschiedenen Organisationen nominiert und nach Prüfung durch die Deutsche Botschaft prämiert werden. Neben einer Urkunde und dem Gratulationsschreiben der Botschafterin der Bundesrepublik Deutschland erhalten die Preisträger einen 2-wöchigen Lehrerfortbildungskurs in Deutschland, wo sie ihre pädagogischen Fähigkeiten weiter ausbauen können und frische Impulse zu Unterrichtsmethoden und Landeskunde erhalten. Aufgrund der wegen der Corona Pandemie online durchgeführten Award Verleihung des AATG am Samstag, 20. November 2021 wurden drei durch die Fachberatungen der Zentralstelle für Auslandsschulwesen vorgeschlagene Lehrkräfte mit dem German Embassy Teacher of Excellence prämiert. Die diesjährigen Preisträger, Benjamin Fisher (Washington), Victoria Henecka (Texas) und Mirela Kimbrough (Georgia) freuten sich sehr über ihre Auszeichnung. Wir gratulieren allen drei Preisträgern und wünschen weiterhin viel Erfolg und Freude bei ihrer Lehrtätigkeit!
Im deutschen Generalkonsulat Houston wurde die LiveÜbertragung der Verleihung gebannt am Monitor verfolgt. Deutsch Lernen in herausfordernden Zeiten – Tagung der Schulleitungen der Deutschen Sprachschulen USA Am 12.11.2021 fand in New York wieder eine Tagung für Schulleitungen der Deutschen Sprachschulen in den USA statt. Wie auf der Tagung 2019 wurde auch diese Tagung wieder mit der German Language School Conference (GLSC) kombiniert, die am 13.11.2021 in den Räumen des Deutschen Generalkonsulats New York stattfand. Diese Tagung wurde von den Fachberatungen der Zentralstelle (ZfA) für das Auslandsschulwesen durchgeführt. Die Deutschen Sprachschulen haben seit Beginn der Covid Pandemie die vielen neuen Herausforderungen schnell und professionell bewältigt. Innerhalb kurzer Zeit wurden passende Online-Angebote entwickelt und für die vielen kulturellen Anlässe, die neben dem Lernen die Qualität der Deutschen Sprachschulen ausmachen, konnten kreative neue Formate erfunden werden.

Über regelmäßige Zoom-Konferenzen für die Schulleitungen organisierten die sieben Fachberatungen aus den USA und Kanada einen schul- und ländergreifenden Austausch. Nachdem zum Schuljahresbeginn die meisten Deutschen Sprachschulen wieder ihren Präsenzunterricht aufnehmen konnten, wurde endlich einmal wieder auch eine Tagung als Präsenzveranstaltung durchgeführt. 30 Schulleitungen der Deutschen Sprachschulen aus den USA nahmen an dieser Tagung teil. Einen Schwerpunkt bildete die Überführung der virtuellen Zusammenarbeit in einen Erfahrungsaustausch in Person. Rita Reiff, Präsidentin der German-American School Association of Southern California drückte es so aus: „Wir haben das persönliche Zusammenkommen nach so langer Zeit sehr genossen, viele neue Informationen und Anregungen mit nach Hause genommen und freuen uns schon auf die nächste Konferenz.“ Mehrere Workshops zum Studieren in Deutschland, dem Deutschen Sprachdiplom und zu Jugend debattiert bildeten den inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt. Deutsch als Fremdsprache an Deutschen Sprachschulen unterrichten Am 20./21.11.2021 fand in New York eine Fortbildung für Lehrkräfte von Deutschen Sprachschulen statt. An diesem Blended Learning Kurs DSD GOLD der Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) nahmen 20 Lehrkräfte von Schulen aus dem Großraum Chicago, Boston, New York und Washington DC teil. Deutsch als Fremdsprache wird - auch an den Deutschen Sprachschulen - häufig von Lehrkräften unterrichtet, die als Seiteneinsteiger:innen diese spannende Tätigkeit aufgenommen haben. Der DSD GOLD Kurs: „Grundlagen der Unterrichtsentwicklung“ der ZfA ist für diese Zielgruppe genau das richtige Angebot. In kombinierten Online- und Präsenzangeboten vertiefen die Lehrkräfte ihre Kenntnisse. Kompetenzorientierung im Unterricht, Strukturierung und Gestaltung der Lehr- und Lernprozesse, der gemeinsame europäische Referenzrahmen, schulinterne DaFCurricula und kollegiale Unterrichtsbeobachtung sind wichtige Bausteine in diesem Blended-Learning Kurs. Nach einer mehrwöchigen gemeinsamen Onlinephase genossen es die teilnehmenden Lehrkräfte sehr, sich endlich persönlich kennenzulernen und gemeinsam in einer Präsenzveranstaltung zu arbeiten. Die Fortbildung wurde von Helmut Kehlenbeck, Fachberatung New York sowie von Jutta Estevez, Lehrerin an der German School of Morris County, geleitet. Mit dabei waren auch zwei Teaching Assistants aus New York und Kentucky, die über das Programm „Meet Young Germany in Your Classroom“ für ein Schuljahr in den USA sind.
