Mums In Need (MIN) is a unique support service for mothers suffering ongoing coercive control after separation from an abusive partner. Their work is driven by a desire both to raise awareness of the multifaceted reality of domestic abuse and to affirm the women with whom MIN works as much more than just 'victims' of that abuse.

MIN offers a tailored service to individual women, providing them with a community of fellow-survivors, experienced professionals and the support to rebuild their lives. The organization is currently made up of CEO Laura Riley who is also a caseworker, one other caseworker, a team administrator, a board of trustees and a team of invaluable volunteers.

Laura Riley founded the charity due to her own experiences in suffering coercive and emotional abuse. She identified that there was no such support service available for mothers who had lived with coercive control and emotional abuse and who are still tied with the perpetrator due to parenting a child with them. Since the humble beginnings from Laura’s laptop in 2013, Mums In Need have supported over 200 women. They have offered a range of support including fortnightly 1:1 support sessions with a case worker, counselling, legal support through family court, financial advice, self-esteem and stress management workshops, yoga, pilates and well-being sessions, coffee mornings and drop-in sessions.

There are many organisations which help support escape from domestic abuse, but escape is not the end of the story. An escalation in relentless emotional and psychological abuse is common postseparation, and is often sustained through shared-care with children. Many mothers are left struggling to find the understanding and resources to cope with ongoing, often invisible abuse. This can be a lonely and desperate situation which impacts on worklife, on other relationships, on motherhood and on physical/mental health.

Mums In Need hold numerous wellbeing sessions for their service users in order to help rebuild their confidence and lives.

Dave Kneeshaw has facilitated many sessions for the Mins and they are pleased to confirm that Mums In Need and Dave are holding a joint session for the public to attend. The event will be online over Zoom on Tuesday 20th April 10am - 12:30pm and tickets are £20 per person with all funds going to the charity so they can continue to support the Mins with these invaluable resources.

After they kept hearing about this practitioner who was having an incredible impact and so they reached out and continue to benefit from his wisdom, kindness and passion to help others deal Dave has been pioneering work around with complex individuals. Do you have a 5% Deposit?

Big changes are happening with the return of 5% deposits, which are back with a bang. Two lenders have emerged onto the market this week with 95% mortgage offers. This means that if you are looking to purchase a house at £200,000, you will only need to have saved a deposit of £10,000! This is great news for the market and not only that, these are traditional 95% mortgages and not backed by the government scheme, meaning interest rates are competitive and more importantly, relatively affordable for low deposit buyers.

After being left in desperate need for a new boiler, the “lovely team” stepped in to make her day.

Hayley started her position as admin assistant after purchasing some of their services and finding the team to be incredibly “clean and tidy”.

Hayley couldn’t afford a new boiler and, due to technicalities in the Government’s Eco Scheme requirements, she didn’t qualify for financial

assistance. Contemplating the colder months ahead, Hayley was on the verge of taking the risk of buying a second-hand boiler and trying to find someone to install it for her.

But that was where 1st Call Gas came in and provided Hayley with the first piece of good news she had heard in a long while.

“Once we heard that Hayley was struggling we knew we had to step in and help.” Explained Dave Turner, director of the Sheffield company. Our business has been doing very

well, so we decided that this was an opportunity for us to give back by helping a deserving member of the local community by installing her an efficient boiler for free.

Hayley described the team as being “lovely and a great service all round.” She was also delighted by how clean and tidy the team left her house after the service.

This isn’t the first time the brilliant team have provided a free boiler to a deserving person in need. Before Christmas last year, Dave heard

of a struggling NHS worker with a broken boiler. NHS worker Bev Rishworth had not been enjoying the best of years. The coronavirus pandemic saw her shielding at her Woodseats home for months, then an operation on her wrist meant she had to self-isolate for a further two weeks. A flooded bathroom affected other parts of her house and then, to cap it all off, issues with her gas supply and an ancient boiler saw her having to manage for several months without heating, hot water and her cooker.

Hello my lovelies, I’m super excited to bring you my 4 page pull out this month.

I’ve been so busy at the Tunedin Music recording studio working hard on my second album. My first song from the album is out NOW and it is called ‘Washing On The Washing Line.” The song is out now on all streaming and download platforms for you to enjoy and I’ve even put the words on page 4, so that you can sing along to it. WARNING….there is a bit of a tongue twister in it so make sure you’ve got your false teeth in as you sing along!

GRANNY’S GOSSIP

I’m not one for gossip... but I love to share what I see on my travels.

Two superstar children won a Granny Norbag prize for World Book Day this year.

6 year old Ruby, from Sheffield, made this fantastic Granny Norbag And The Cave Troll diorama for a school project that linked art and reading.

Whilst up in a Wakefield, 6 year old Harry proved you’re never too young to rock a fluffy perm by dressing up as me for his World Book Day celebrations.

The Y1 children at Doncaster’s Grange Lane Infant School have been learning all about Walt Disney and animation this term. You can see these brilliant illustrations brought to life on the school’s websitewww.gliacademy.org.uk I’ve already seen them and you are in for a real treat because they are absolutely superb!

The Y2 children of Brightside Infant School have been learning about Sheffield and have created artwork in the style of Pete McKee. They chose their favourite places in the local area and painted their own cartoon style pieces. Well done to Annmarie, Imaan, Colt and Hollie for sharing this outstanding artwork.

The children in Y2 at Redscope Primary School have been learning about life cycles and have used oil pastels to create this beautiful artwork. Well done to Cooper, Lexi and Elissa (who worked together) and J-Jay - who worked so hard to produce these magnificent pieces of art.

Hello everyone, I am Mrs Dobson and I am the Headteacher at Holy Rood Catholic Primary School. I want to share with you some of the wonderful things that we do here at Holy Rood.

We have a fantastic school community and ethos and have worked together successfully during these difficult times. Together, our school and families have ensured that children have been provided with many exciting learning opportunities whilst at home.

During the course of remote learning, children were also encouraged to take part in ‘Well-being Wednesday’ where they were provided with a selection of ideas from their class teacher that did not require a screen; this enabled children to reduce their screen time during the week. Children also had hand delivered by staff a ‘DT in a box’ activity provided by Hepp DT, a company that we also use for our after school clubs.

For World Book Day we encouraged all children (both in school and at home) to wear their Pyjamas and grab their favourite book. All classes had a live session with their class teacher and class and completed fun activities such as book catchphrase, quizzes and discussions about their favourite books. Children were given a selection of reading themed activities to complete during the day with a few competitions to enter too!

Our school is full of wonderful displays that show off the amazing achievements of our children throughout the year. Here at Holy Rood we strive for excellence in everything we do.

Easter Biscuits

Serves 18

(Freezable - uncooked dough only • Vegetarian) STEP 3

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• 300g plain flour , plus extra for dusting • 150g white caster sugar • 150g slightly salted butter, chopped • 1 large egg • 2 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste

Weigh the flour and sugar in a bowl. Add the butter and rub together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles wet sand, with no buttery lumps. Beat the egg with the vanilla, then add to the bowl. Mix briefly with a cutlery knife to combine, then use your hands to knead the dough together – try not to overwork the dough, or the biscuits will be tough. Shape into a disc, then wrap in cling film and chill for at least 15 mins. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line two baking sheets with baking parchment.

FOR THE ICED OPTION • 500g royal icing sugar • your favourite food colouring gels FOR THE JAMMY MIDDLE OPTION • icing sugar, for dusting • 400g apricot jam , or lemon curd

Prep: 1hr 15mins Cook: 30 mins

Dust a work surface with flour. Halve the dough, then roll one half out to the thickness of a £1 coin.

Use an egg-shaped cookie cutter (ours was 10cm long; you could also make a cardboard template to cut around) to stamp out as many cookies as you can, then transfer them to one of the baking sheets, leaving a little space between the biscuits.

Repeat with the other half of the dough. If you want to make jammy biscuits, use a small circular cutter to stamp holes in half of the biscuits (where the yolk would be). If you intend to make both iced and jammy biscuits, only stamp holes in a quarter of the biscuits.

Bake for 12-15 mins, until the biscuits are pale gold. Cool on the sheets for 10 mins, then transfer to a wire rack to cool fully. Once cool, decorate to your liking (see next steps). Will keep in an airtight container for up to five days.

STEP 4 To decorate the biscuits with icing, add enough water to the icing sugar to make a thick icing – it should hold its shape without spreading when piped. Transfer about a third of the icing to a piping bag fitted with a very small round nozzle (or just snip a tiny opening at the tip). Pipe an outline around the biscuits, then draw patterns in the middle – lines, spots and zigzags work well.

Leave to dry for 10 mins. Divide the remaining icing between as many colours as you’d like to use, then use the gels to dye them. Loosen each icing with a few drops of water, then transfer them to piping bags. Use the coloured icing to fill the empty spaces on the biscuits. You may need to use a cocktail stick to tease it into the corners.

Once covered, leave to dry for a few hours.

STEP 5 To make the jammy middle biscuits, dust the biscuits with holes in the middle with a heavy coating of icing sugar. Spread the jam or curd generously over the whole biscuits, then sandwich the dusted biscuits on top of them.

Make your own Egg basket Paper Easter Basket Instructions All you need is a square sheet of paper or card, and some scissors and glue. Make a few snips and folds, and in literally five minutes you’ll have a lovely homemade Easter basket that you can fill with chocolates or other Easter gifts!

MATERIALS • Sheet of paper or card. A 6" (15 cm) square makes a nice mini-basket. You’ll also want a thin strip to make a handle.

• Pencil • Ruler • Adhesive tape or glue • Optional: pins or other decorations

Place your paper nice-side-down.

With a pencil and ruler, draw an evenly spaced 3 by 3 grid onto the square, as if you were going to play noughts-and-crosses. I usually use a 6" square of paper, so my lines are spaced 2" apart.

Fold and unfold along each of the lines to make a crease.

See how in the photo from step 1, the lines going in from the top and bottom are drawn a bit darker? Well, you want to cut

Fold up the left and right sides of the paper to turn it into a basket like this. Tape or glue the folds into place. I like to use adhesive tape because it’s quicker. If you put it on the inside of the basket then you can’t see it anyway.

STEP 4 Use a thin strip of paper to make a handle, and tape or glue it on. The strip should be about the same length as your square, e.g. I used a 6" square to make my basket, so I used a 6" long strip to make the handle.

(Extra tip: Put some pins through the base of the handle to add shine!)

STEP 5 Now you’ve made your paper Easter basket, it’s time to fill it up with goodies!
