INNOVATIVE CARBON NEGATIVE ASPHALT WINS AWARD Rotherham Council and SteelPhalt have won the Innovation Award at the 2022 ALARM Risk Awards for its pioneering use of carbon negative asphalt in the borough. Earlier this year, the new asphalt was on a stretch of Broom Lane, just outside the town centre as part of the £24 Million to 2024 Roads Programme. The ground-breaking new asphalt is made partly of trees and uses a natural binder called Kraft Lignin which also originates from trees. It could reduce the climate impact substantially over the life cycle of the road. The use of such materials in resurfacing works in Rotherham supports the Council’s commitment to a cleaner, greener local environment, targeting the reduction of carbon emissions. Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, Cllr Dominic Beck, said: “This is fantastic news for the Council and its partner, SteelPhalt, whose teams have done excellent work over the last few months.

The new asphalt is truly an inventive product which will help Rotherham residents to lower their carbon foot-print and have less affect on the environment. This award acknowledges the steps that local authorities across the UK are taking to become more eco-friendly and the innovations they are welcoming to make their areas greener places to live.” The ALARM Innovation Award is presented to the organisation or team that demonstrates how, with the use of innovation, risks are identified, measured and managed; with positive impacts to business and operational objectives. The judges appreciated this project as a valuable opportunity taken by both organisations with an innovative approach. It is a leader in the application of a practical solution to carbon reduction and environmental impact, bringing together public and private sector. ALARM President, Wayne Rigby said: “This year’s Awards’ entries reflect the consummate professionalism and

creative thinking of our members and their colleagues. We have been impressed by the quality of all entries and have enjoyed finding out more about the interesting work done by our members and the wider sector.” The winners were announced at the Awards dinner held at The Kimpton Clocktower Manchester on Monday 4

July, hosted by Lucy Porter. The esteemed ALARM Risk Awards are highly regarded as a measure of excellence in the management of risk and insurance in in public service and community organisations. The Awards are an invaluable opportunity for recognition; offering an opportunity to share these achievements with the wider community.

Through the year Steph will be sharing advise and tips on caring for your pets. FLEAS AND TICKS With our increasing temperatures, modern central heating and an increased dog and cat population fleas and ticks are no longer just a summer problem. You may have had a discussion with your vet about flea and tick treatment but in this article, I will discuss the life cycles so that we can fully understand why it is so important to treat our pets regularly for ticks and fleas.

FLEAS Fleas can cause intense itching and associated skin infections and irritation in dogs and cats. A female flea can lay 50-200 eggs per day, these eggs fall off our pets onto carpets, furniture, cars and even between the edges of floorboards. The eggs take between 2 days to 2 weeks to hatch depending on environmental conditions, these eggs hatch into larvae, these larvae will naturally avoid light and will spin cocoons form into a pupae, this cocoon protects the pupae from environmental factors allowing it to be protected for long periods (up to months but in some cases even years). Adult fleas will hatch from the cocoons when they feel vibrations, rising carbon dioxide levels and body heat. They are waiting for the signs of a pet then they hatch and jump on, completing the cycle to adult flea. Due to the life cycle stages around 90% of fleas live in the environment we live in and not on the animals, this is why the main stay of treatment is a 2-step approach 1. Killing adult fleas so that they cannot lay eggs 2. Treating the environment to kill eggs, lavae and pupae with an appropriate house spray regularly

TICKS Ticks have been classically associated with moorland and woodland but can now be found in most environments including parks and gardens. They are commonly found in the summer but are now being found in autumn and even in winter. Ticks have 4 life stages lasting 3 years. Ticks are required to feed off an animal between each of the life stages. An adult female tick can lay several thousand

eggs that hatch into larval stage (seed ticks) in the environment. As ticks cannot jump they will use vegetation to elevate them to a height where they can easily attach to a passing animal, a behaviour known as ‘questing’. A seed tick will feed for several days and then drop off and moult to become a nymph, these nymphs feed again and drop off to moult into an adult tick to complete the life cycle. Ticks can cause irritation and tick bite reactions around the area of biting, they can also carry some serious diseases. Lyme disease caused by a bacteria called Borrelia Burgdorferi is spread by ticks and can cause lameness, lethargy, fever and increased gland size (lymph nodes). Babesiosis is a disease of red blood cells causing anaemia, weakness, dark urine and fever. Ehrlichiosis is a disease of white blood cells caused by a bacteria called Rickettsia causing fever, anorexia, stiffness and bleeding problems. Both Babesiosis and ehrlichiosis are common in Europe but rare in the UK, however dogs travelling to Europe may become infected or carry infected ticks to the UK so some cases are now being seen. It is very important if you see ticks to only remove with an appropriate tick hook and not just pull them out, if the head is left in the animal it can cause irritation, reaction or an abscess. Ask your veterinary surgeon or nurse for advice.

Treatment and prevention It is important to treat your dogs and cats regularly for both fleas and ticks. There are a huge range of treatment out there, I would always advise using a prescription medication, ideally after a discussion with your veterinary surgeon. There are ranges of monthly and 3 monthly spot on treatments and tablets available now for ease of use. Gaining veterinary advice is strongly recommended as it will ensure you are using a current product with the effectiveness for the current risks in your geographical area, for any potential travel and for your home environment. Good flea and tick prevention and treatment will ensure that we all have fun with our pets this summer and autumn. Stephanie Peat MRCVS, Hall Court Veterinary Group

Rush House 40th anniversary

About us ...

Rush House is a small independent charity that has been running in Rotherham for the last 40 years. We provide a temporary accommodation service for homeless and vulnerable young people, we provide education, employment and training support to Rotherham people of any age, and we are also launching our own independent living skills training programme. After our successful 40th anniversary celebrations in June, we are looking to the future to grow our brand and our charity in every way possible, in order for us to be resilient and to be able to continue to support Rotherham people in their journey through life.

Well now that the dust has had chance to settle a bit on our fantastic 40th anniversary celebrations at New York Stadium on Friday we thought it would be a good time to look back on the event. You wouldn’t have known, but on the morning of the event we encountered and overcame numerous technical difficulties, just in time for a seamless event from 12-3pm as planned. Phew! We are so pleased and honoured that our founder and trustee Rosemary Boyle who has been very poorly was able to attend and enjoy the event and Lisa was able to present her with a lovely bouquet. So just to recap, our fabulous compare was Andy Kershaw who brought with him a wealth of experience in that field, and military precision regarding time slots! He even anticipated we would finish slightly early and saw an opportunity for an off agenda item interviewing our ex- CEO’s Jim Stevens and Jo Smith that he could slip in and that would go down well. Our CEO Rachael was the first speaker who gave a confident presentation covering the history of Rush. Next up were our service managers Lisa Rachieru, Michelle Corker and Steve Harris who were interviewed on the sofa and all talked passionately about what they love about working for Rush. They were followed by Dr Joanne Thomson and Dr Rebecca Nock who talked about the Sheffield University placement programme and Rebecca discussed how beneficial it was to have her placement at Rush, and she is now a qualified GP. Next ex-service users Keenan Freer, JohnLuke Stephens-Platts, Amanda Haynes & Melanie Bryan were interviewed on the sofa about their experience at Rush, how it saved their lives, and what great things they have gone on to achieve. They were followed by Tracy Gollins (CEO of YWCA), Tracy Jackson (Deputy CEO of Roundabout) & Jamie Prescott (deputy CEO of Target Housing) who were all previous employees of Rush, on the sofa – they were asked questions about their employment at Rush and how it helped them with their careers.

Next Julie Dalton CEO of Gullivers brought in some entertainment by singing happy birthday and speaking about plans for a partnership with Rush. Ex residents Gino Moyo and Aaron Joy were interviewed next about how Rush changed their lives and how they have both gone on to study at Sheffield Hallam University and are looking forward to the future. Next the Rush board of directors got up to speak about their passion for supporting Rush in its mission to change lives for the better. The event was closed by Joada Allen the Chamber of Commerce president who pulled the rest of the day together by summing up the general feeling of positivity and achievement in the room and looking forward to Rush working closer with the Chamber going forward. Our CEO Rachael was presented with a certificate for 40 years by Andrew Denniff from the Chamber of Commerce. All that hard work paid off and created a fantastic event that we are so proud of. We would like to thank all of the staff involved in organising, the speakers, table sponsors and attendees who collectively made it so amazing. We would also like to like to say a massive thank you to Monster Mesh who provided all our high quality roll down banners and corporate work wear. Our bespoke house shaped soaps were made in partnership with social enterprise Labre’s Hope by our service users and staff, and their soap makers who have been previously affected by homelessness. Thank you also to The Source for assistance in funding this activity. What a great collaboration!

If you would like to support us…. For anyone who would be interested in supporting us we would like to tell you about a package that we are offering. Putting a roof over our service users heads is one thing, but making it a home is another. For £100 you can purchase a help to move on pack for one of our service users, this will pay for £25 electricity, £25 gas, and £50 of soft furnishings of the person’s choice, for example a full bedding and towel set, or two cushions, a canvas and a photo frame.

Thanks also to those who donated raffle prizes, the Mayor for attending and drawing the raffle and to Mary the photographer for providing her services on the day even though Other ways you can support us are: she was offered another paid opportunity. • Volunteering day – if your organisation offers this it would be gratefully received to And it’s not like us to stand still, so watch assist with gardening or decorating for this space to see what we are hitting the example ground running with next….

• Skills / knowledge sharing – by offering your expertise and support to our Brighter Futures clients, offering work placements or helping with interview techniques. • Wellbeing – such as relaxing treatments for our service users here at Rush. • Financial support – e.g. budgeting advice. Or any other way that you think you may be able to support would be most gratefully received. A company called Monster Mesh recently assisted us by providing roll down banners and corporate work wear that were on display at our 40th.

Please feel free to get in touch at info@rushhouse.co.uk if you would like to help in any way. Many thanks for reading this!

Follow us on Facebook Moving house is said to be one of the most stressful experiences that you can go through, however the rest of this article will talk through hints and tips that can help you get ahead of the game and put yourself into home moving bliss.

YorkshireInformationPoint - Issue 22 - 2022 P13

How to Move Home More Efficiently

It’s important when looking to move house to have forward momentum and plan plan plan in advance of taking the plunge and putting your house on the market. We can all get caught up in day dreaming on rightmove however it is best to try and wait for this until you know your financial position at the minimum. The first thing I would recommend you do is make an appointment with a mortgage broker to discuss your options and go through your future borrowing scenarios. This will help you ascertain what your new household finances might look like and something that we can certainly help you with. • How much you can borrow? • How much your house might be worth? • What your mortgage options might be? • What your protection might cost you? How much you can borrow will depend upon your individual financial circumstances and credit history. There is now hard and fast rule to this and lending limits will vary with deposit, salary, debts and dependants to name a few. It is a good idea to make sure in the months before you look to review your finances you assess your spending habits, as it is easy to get lazy and be aware of the things lenders do not like. This includes; gambling repeatedly, going into your overdraft each month, bouncing direct debits and borrowing money from “Peter to pay Paul” so to speak. These types of spending habits can have a negative impact on your application, the same as being close to your credit card limit or having excess amounts of open credit in proportion to your salary. When we have a look at your affordability, amongst discussing your aspirations for your next house, we will talk about the above factors and also look at your budget and what type of house you want or how much you can borrow for this budget. The amount you can borrow might have changed slightly recently with rising interest rates, as what you are paying to borrow your money has increased therefore will lower your ability to lend. This coupled with the rising cost of living, it is really important to talk to your mortgage broker about your spending clearly and honestly. You can get ahead of the game buy finding out how much your house is worth in advance of being ready to put it on the market. This will then make it easier to come up with a more accurate budget for your next house. We can help you with this as we have access to hometrack which is an online automated valuation service. We are able to do you a valuation on your current property to help guide you with your budget. In reality, speaking to estate agents and getting some valuations before instructing to market your house would be the next logical step following this. Once we have looked at your budget and your rough valuation on your property, we are then

able to discuss your mortgage options more thoroughly. This will include a maximum purchase price based on the information we have, a monthly expected payment and discussions on the term and product most suitable for your needs. It could be that you are tied into a fixed rate currently and it would financially disadvantage you to move to a different lender however your mortgage has the option to “port” on it. Porting is where your product has a flexible feature that allows you to pick the loan up and move it from the house you currently own to your new home. This can save you in early repayment charges. At this point, you can potentially also do additional borrowing to “top up” the short fall in borrowing, if there is one, between this home and your new one. The additional borrowing is more commonly added to your mortgage account as a second part and tends to be on a new rate and you retain your existing mortgage and mortgage product as is. You do have the opportunity to change the term on your current mortgage though, i.e to make it longer which could reduce your overall payments. After all this is done, we will also have further conversation about financial protection, this will have formed part of the initial budgeting discussions but we delve more deeper into this at this stage. Once you are happy with all the figures and you know in your head what you are looking for and how much is costs you, we then put you in the best financial position possible for buying and get you an agreement

For some, on first impressions, this shop may blend in to the town rather than stand out. But walk past at your peril! Caprice deserves your attention. I admit (being a portly fellow) I was drawn by their promise of plus sized clothes. I wasn’t disappointed. The range, quality and value was excellent and I walked out with

bag loads of great summerwear. But there was something else about this place. Lee and the team were so knowledgeable, helpful, kind and attentive with the air of a traditional tailor, almost a bygone time. It was also full of clothes suitable for any size or style. Highly Recommended!

Today Rotherham… This week, Reuben Navarro Tomorrow The World! visits Madrid. ‘The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain’. Words to remember when landing in Madrid. Once emerging from the depths of Sol, all eyes turn to watch the tourist. Where has he come from? Where will he go? Why is he covering his pockets? What does he already know? Palaces and Plaza’s, North

The Musologist Summer’s here and often the best music for your playlist is just hiding in the shadows. What once seemed kitch or outdated can often fit right in to the just right summer circumstances. I’m casting my net far and wide for some great new releases and simmering hidden gems in our vaults.

Recent Releases: Journey - Freedom (2022) **** Their first album in 11 years sees the welcome return of Randy Jackson and the huge drums/writing/production of hit maker Narada Michael Walden. It’s also a sprawling 73 minutes filled with many flavours of Journey, including a few numbers that could easily have hit the cutting room floor. But after listening to 7 or 8 of my favourite songs, I also enjoyed returning to the full 15 songs top to bottom. Haunting ballads, searing blues rock and catchy radio rock tell a big sounding story. Perseverance will pay off.

Rachel Newton and Lauren MacColl - Heal & Harrow (2022) **** Textural modern folk from this Scottish duo takes the listener on a ride that instantly transports the mind elsewhere. Harp, Viola, Piano and Vocal set a dreamlike stage

Africans and Knaves. Pass the portions of Paella and head home. Home is round the corner, a kindly sanctuary, meanwhile restless natives settle into strips of chewy beef. Easter marches slow things down with hooded ghosts and graven images. The savage and the sanctified sit closely in the

that is at once accessible and traditional without a trace of cliche. This artful Caledonian record runs deep, catchy yet progressive and deserving of huge success.

From the vaults: Calvin Harris - Ready for the Weekend (2009) **** Electronic producer, writer, collaborator and solo artist. Harris has achieved a huge amount over a long career. It’s important therefore not to forget a gem from early on. Always with an ear for a concise pop melody (the Buggles-like title track), Cinematic deep cuts (Flashback) or Nightclub floor fillers (I’m not alone) this is a great noughties nugget that has dated very little and will perk up even the most drab back yard party!

Lee Ritenour - Rit (1981) ***** This is not even all that highly regarded within Lee’s own canon, however avoid this waxing at your peril. This Jazz fusioneer avoids his past instrumental detours to serve up a slice of synth funk-soul that will turn your sun trap into a sizzling yacht rock pad. Speedos/Bikini, Ambre Solaire and aviators is all you need once the needle goes down on this one. Be the envy of all your top-knotted muso snob pals who have just discovered Steely Dan. This will floor them.

pews. Reine Sophia holds the art of the last century: Guernica growls, Zobel appeals and later, Picasso will meet with you from beyond the grave. Here is a city that will not concede, it will not embrace you or bow down. It’s ready to fight and with a slash of red, the beast is defeated.

Meatballs in Rich Tomato Sauce This is a favourite with our family and, if you have the basics – mince, onion and tinned tomatoes – you can add to the sauce whatever else you have handy to either give it a specific flavour or to make it go further. I often add very finely chopped peppers and courgettes, or if you want the sauce spicy, you could try adding some finely chopped spicy pepperoni and chillies. If you want to make the minced beef go further to make more meatballs, you could add breadcrumbs or finely chopped/grated vegetables such as mushrooms, carrot etc. METHOD: 1. Put the minced beef in a bowl and mix in approx. 1 tsp of dried oregano and a dash of Hendersons Relish and season with salt and pepper. Give the minced beef a good mix with your hands. 2. With wet hands, form the minced beef mix into meatballs. You can make them whatever

Feeds a family of 4. Ingredients:

size you choose – we usually make them the size of an small plum or apricot. Set the meatballs to one side on a plate.

500g Minced Beef 1 Large Onion (finely chopped) 2 x Garlic Cloves (crushed) 2 x 400g Tins of Chopped Tomatoes 1 x Beef Oxo Tomato Puree Splash Tabasco Sauce (Optional) Splash Hendersons Relish (Optional) Splash Red Wine (Optional) Dried Oregano Dried Basil Salt & Pepper

3. Brown the meatballs in a large frying pan until brown on all sides and set aside on a clean plate. 4. Fry the chopped onion and crushed garlic in the same pan, adding more oil if needed. If you are adding wine, add now to the onion and garlic and allow to boil up for a couple of minutes. Add three or four spoonfuls of the chopped tomatoes and scrape bottom of pan to pick up any residue from browning the meatballs. Add a good tablespoon of tomato puree, the beef oxo, splash of Tabasco sauce, a sprinkling of dried basil and season with salt and pepper. 5. Empty the tomato sauce into a roasting dish, add the rest of the tomatoes and stir well. Place in a preheated moderate oven (180˚C, 350˚F, Gas Mark 4) for 15 minutes.

6. Remove from oven and stir well. Place meatballs in the roasting dish and press into the tomato sauce. Place back in the oven and cook for approx. 45 mins. Check the meatballs after

30 mins and if they are burning, loosely lay a piece of foil on top of the dish.

8. We typically serve the meatballs with spaghetti, or other pasta, and parmesan cheese.

7. Remove from the oven and stir the sauce well.

Makes 10-12 small meatballs

Quick and Easy Boozy Tiramisu In a traditional Tiramisu, egg yolks are whisked with sugar and added to the mascarpone cheese and cream and then whisked egg whites are folded in to give an airy texture. This recipe is a bit of a cheats Tiramisu as it leaves out the eggs. We think it’s just as delicious, and even more if left for a day for the flavours to mingle together. Let us know how you think it compares to the more traditional Tiramisu.

Ingredients

METHOD: 1. Whisk the double cream, sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. 2. Add the mascarpone cheese and rum and whisk until stiff peaks form. 3. In a separate bowl, mix the coffee and liqueur well and quickly dunk the sponge fingers, one at a time before laying as a single layer in an 8” x 8” dish (20cm x 20cm) with sufficiently deep sides.

The sponge fingers very quickly become too soggy, so dunk on both sides for no more than a second or two – they need to retain their shape. 4. Spread half of the cream mixture on top of the sponge fingers and repeat with

another layer of dunked sponge fingers and a second layer of the cream mixture. 5. Dust thickly with cocoa powder, cover and cool in the fridge for at least 4 hours, and preferably overnight, before serving.

We get approx. 10 small servings from this recipe, but as the recipe is quite rich, a small serving is perfect.

225ml (8floz) Double Cream 225g (8oz) Mascarpone Cheese 75g (3oz) Caster Sugar 1 tsp Vanilla Extract 1 tblsp Dark Rum to add to the cream mix 2 Cups Extra Strong Espresso Coffee left too cool to room temperature 1 tblsp Liqueur to add to the Coffee (Tia Maria, Amaretto etc) 1 pack Sponge Fingers (also called Savoiardi Biscuits/Fingers) Cocoa Powder

COMMUNITY CONNECT CIC Community Connect is a social enterprise day service for adults with a learning disability and autism based in Wath-upon-Dearne, Rotherham. We provide a wide range of unique activities for our service users. Since becoming a community interest company on August 25th 2018 we have grown into a very successful non for profit business with 97 places now filled weekly. One of the things we pride our selves on is our links with the local community. At the High Street Centre, Rawmarsh Hill we run the Chit Chat Café every Tuesday, giving our service users valuable work experience, and at the same time bringing the community together, combatting social isolation. A big project over the last 2 ½ years is our Community Sensory Garden. Wath Rugby Club kindly donated a large piece of land that is adjacent to Community Connect and we have been working hard transforming it into a tranquil place to enjoy, feel safe, socialise, play games. Some of the ongoing projects in the garden include a seaside corner complete with beach huts and lighthouse that our service users helped to create, deckchairs, bucket and spades, lobster pots and more! There is a large polytunnel where we grow everything from seed, raised beds, large wooden gazebo, woodworking workshop, bug hotel complete with veg garden on roof, and plenty of sensory items and figures to enjoy. On August 22nd we are having official opening day by the Mayor of Rotherham and John Healey MP, which coincides with Community Connect CIC celebrating our 4th anniversary.

Anthony Dickinson Golf Coaching PGA Golf Professional Anthony Dickinson is Director of Anthony Dickinson Golf Coaching @ Sheffield Design Studio, Kelham Island, Sheffield. Anthony has over 15 years coaching experience and has delivered coaching at European Tour events including The Open Championship and for companies such as Adidas, Hilton Hotels and Sky Sports. For many the golf swing is seen as a mystery and its secrets kept to a select few. Anthony’s coaching philosophy is that impact is the overriding factor in all golf shots, and the swing

works backwards from there in the simplest way possible. An effective golf swing is one that is repeatable and delivers the club in such a way to produce the required shot. Anthony is a firm believer that in order to solve a problem you must first understand the cause and effects. Armed with the knowledge of the impact factors and their outcomes, you become the master of your own swing with the ability to recognise and correct any on-course issues within your game. A coaching session in the studio will allow you to discuss and develop your swing without

outside interferences, making your session time more productive. Anthony uses the Flightscope 3D Doppler Radar tracking system, that accurately measures and collects data from 25+ parameters in the clubhead and ball flight. 3D modelling is produced of the club head dynamics through impact and ball flight characteristics. With the combination of Flightscope Skills Testing, a complete profile of a golfers ability and performance can be created. This in turn determines the correct course of action for improvement.

For further information or to book a coaching session visit www.adgolfcoaching.com and use voucher code YIP15 to get 15%off any single coaching session.
