Welcome to Issue 10 of the Award Winning YiP Monthly paper, covering the Rotherham Community YiP Media is very proud to have published 10 issues into the Rotherham Community. We actually launched the first issue back in April/ May 2020, during the start of the global pandemic and the first national lockdown . We are proud to say, that since then we have reached over half a million people directly in their homes. This is just in the Rotherham paper alone, as we have also reached over 3 million people digitally. Hello my lovelies, with the sun in the sky and the brighter evenings, I’ve been out walking a lot over the past few weeks. If, like me, you like to keep active you can find out about the Beat The Street initiative on page 4. It’s taking Rotherham by storm and is heading to Sheffield next month too.

You’ll find lots of information page 3 about my School Of The month, Stradbroke Primary School. Mr Sitch the headteacher tells us why David Walliams sent him a video message, which famous person ended up on the school roof and why his wonderful staff deserve awards.

Finally, if you’re out and about in Sheffield you might bump into some funky looking bears. You can read about all the marvellous Bears Of Sheffield, and their mission to raise lots of money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, on page 2.

I’m not one for gossip... but I love to share what I see on my travels.

There is a new animal in town! The Children’s Hospital Charity are delighted to confirm that the Bears of Sheffield sculpture trail will take place this summer, raising vital funds for Sheffield Children’s.

Bringing together families and friends, businesses, schools, artists and the community, the trail will begin in July 2021 and support the fundraising drive to build a new Cancer and Leukaemia ward at Sheffield Children’s.

The trail will comprise of 60 big bears, standing at 2.1m tall, which are sponsored by local businesses, organisations and families, as well as 100 little bears which have been fundraised for and decorated by schools, nurseries and colleges.

Event Organiser Cheryl Davidson explained: “The Bears of Sheffield will be a great opportunity for us to get outside, explore Sheffield and celebrate our wonderful city, all for a good cause. We’re delighted the trail will make its long-awaited entrance this summer.

“It will showcase the vision, creativity and generosity of our community. Whether sponsoring a bear, shouting about the trail, donating, or taking on your own challenge or bear-themed event, we can’t wait for everyone to enjoy the trail this summer.”

The trail will begin exactly a year later than initially planned, after being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Charity and key partners are now increasingly confident the vital fundraiser can take place this summer.

Cheryl continues: “Since the postponement last year, we have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the Bears of Sheffield can be enjoyed safely. This has included assessing each location to ensure social distancing can be followed, discouraging touching of the sculptures, and limiting the amount placed closely to one other.

“We have and continue to work closely with Sheffield City Council and other key partners to ensure the project adheres to the government guidelines and I would like to place on record our thanks to them for helping to bring the Bears to Sheffield this summer.”

The Bears of Sheffield are being brought to life by artists of all ages, both amateur and professional, in isolation or in small groups.

SCHOOL OF THE MONTH Hi Readers, I’m Mr Sitch and I’m the Headteacher at Stradbroke Primary School in Sheffield. Stradbroke is a large, vibrant primary school with a really rich curriculum and loads going on, all of the time. I’d love to tell you about some of the things that we do here to make learning so much fun for all of our children.

We learn about all sorts of different topics in our school and try to make it as interesting as possible, learning about what might happen if Henry VIII ran the school; about famous tomb raiders (not Lara Croft!); catching flying carpets around the world and what might happen if we found the Jumanji game on our school grounds; as well as lots, lots more.

We try to support lots of local charities to help people less fortunate than ourselves. All of the children and staff are doing a fun run this month called the Teddy Bear Trot to raise money for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital – I might even manage a lap myself!

We like dressing up whenever we get the chance! We’ve come to school dressed as our favourite pop stars, favourite real-life superheroes, favourite book characters and even as our favourite teachers. We’ve even had a few people turn up as Granny Norbag!

We love learning about being healthy and looking after ourselves.

During the first lockdown, we had an outdoor gym built so that children (and staff) could keep fit when they returned to school and look after our physical and mental health. It’s very popular!

Believe it or not, the real Father Christmas and Rudolph actually landed on our school roof in December. We don’t know how they got up there, but they had definitely done a risk assessment!

Headteacher’s Lockdown Awards: All of the teachers and staff here have been brilliant during the past 12 months, going above and beyond the call of duty, so I have compiled my special Headteacher’s awards list!

Most Motivational – Coach McCarroll, our very own Joe Wicks, who posted a new fitness exercise video for the children to do every single day!

Best Singing Voice – Miss Anderson and Miss Glaves, who would have made Dame Vera Lynn proud during the VE Day celebrations with their rendition of We’ll Meet Again!

Top Rapper – MC Rashy (Mr Rash) the Stradbroke John Barnes, let’s get ready to rumble, there’s not a lyric he can’t fumble…

Best DIY Haircut – Mr ‘Vidal’ Matthews. The dog shears were a brave call under the circumstances, but, he now carries a comb everywhere he goes, he just can’t part with it.

Best Dressed – Mr Stones, who wore a dress to school for World Book Day as Dennis from the Boy in the Dress and caught the attention of none other than David Walliams himself, who sent us a congratulatory video message (we still prefer Granny!).

Beat The Street Rotherham I’m so excited to be part of Beat The Street Rotherham this year. The initiative started on the 14th of April and thousands of children and adults are already taking part. It’s not too late to sign up and if you read on you will find out how you can register and take part. Sheffield folks need not worry too because Beat The Street Sheffield launches next month!

I caught up with my good friend Ivy Dorchester Brown who gave me this exclusive interview.

What is your role in Beat The Street?

I am the Engagement Coordinator for Rotherham Beat the Streets working with the schools in Rotherham along with Nadeem Shan who will be working as our Community Engagement Coordinator. I have always been active and love to promote the benefits of exercise, physical activity and the outdoors. I started my working life as a secondary teacher for PE, became a School Sports Coordinator, Partnership Development Manager and PE Consultant.

What is Beat The Street?

This is a fantastic initiative, Covid Safe played outside in the local area developed by doctors and experts in physical health, it’s great for social distancing...

Who Can do it?

Absolutely everyone can take part as it is totally inclusive.

This month Joe & Emily from the Yip team had the pleasure of interviewing Lee Appleyard, an English lightweight champion.

Here’s what he had to say: 1. You started your career in 2014, if you remember, what got you into boxing?

Before starting boxing, I played Rugby. I boxed for 3 years from ages 14-17, before taking an 8 year break.

Then, when I was 24 I picked it up again as an amateur. A few years later I went pro as I wanted to have the opportunity before it was too late.

2. We had a look at your social media pages and have seen videos of you training, we really respect how hard you work!

All boxers train very hard and I always dedicate myself to the fight. This way, I’ll have no regrets and know that I did everything in my power to prepare for it, letting the best man win!

PARK FOR FREE AT WEEKENDS IN ROTHERHAM TOWN CENTRE Rotherham Council has extended free weekend parking across the town centre to support residents and businesses as COVID-19 restrictions ease.

As businesses including salons, pubs, cafes and non-essential retailers reopen for the first time in months, the Council has permanently removed Saturday charges at all twelve of its off-street car parks in central Rotherham. All council parking is already free on Sundays (except

Wellgate multi-storey, which opens Monday to Saturday only).

Those coming back to the town centre will also see a revamped Bridgegate, with new lighting, paving and colourful planters, as well as work underway on College Street to provide new landscaping, seating and on-street pay and display parking.

While many will be keen to make the most of the easing restrictions, the Council is reminding residents to continue to stick to social distancing guidelines as the COVID-19 infection rate in Rotherham is still at more than twice the national average.

People are encouraged to follow the hands, face, space and fresh air guidance, as well as making use of the regular lateral flow testing available through workplaces, schools and community test sites. Residents are also reminded that if they test positive, they must stay at home and self-isolate.

Rotherham Council’s Director of Public Health, Ben Anderson, said: “There is a lot of excitement now the lockdown restrictions are easing and it’s great to see the people coming back to the town centre. However there is a very real risk of a further wave of infection in Rotherham so it’s vital we all continue to social distance and follow all the COVID safety guidelines to avoid any need for restrictions to be re-introduced.

“Please, if you are going shopping, visiting the hairdressers or meeting family and friends outside at a café or pub, keep your distance, wash your hands regularly and wear a face covering when required. We must all do everything we can to keep Rotherham open.”

Strawberry Ice-Cream

Serves 8

(Freezable - Gluten-free - Nut-free - Vegetarian)

METHOD

INGREDIENTS Use sweet strawberries whilst they’re in season to make this fabulous homemade strawberry ice cream. It's perfect on its own or as an accompaniment to a dessert.

• 400g strawberries, stalks removed • 1-2 tsp lemon juice • 600ml double cream • 300ml whole milk • 150g white caster sugar • 5 egg yolks • 2 tsp vanilla extract

STEP 1

Put the strawberries in a food processor or blender.

Whizz to a purée, then add the lemon juice to taste – if the strawberries are quite tart you’ll only need a little.

STEP 2 Warm the cream and milk in a pan until just steaming, not boiling.

Whisk the sugar and egg yolks in a bowl for a minute or two until pale yellow. Slowly pour the hot cream mixture into the eggs, whisking as you do.

Once fully incorporated, strain through a sieve back into the pan. Gently cook over a low-medium heat until it thickens slightly – it should coat the back of your spoon

Prep: 10 mins Cook: 20 mins

and leave a channel if you run your finger through it (this will happen at about 82-85C). Be careful not to overcook it as the eggs will scramble. Transfer to a bowl. Cover and cool for 10 mins, then chill for 1 hr.

STEP 3 Stir the strawberry purée and vanilla through the cold custard. Taste to see if it needs a little more lemon or vanilla.

STEP 4 Freeze the ice cream in an ice cream maker, or container in the freezer. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, freeze for 4 hrs, whisking vigorously or blending in a food processor every hour to remove any ice crystals.

Will keep in the freezer for up to two months.
