New Forward Care is a new service designed to support individuals who struggle to access the community independently. We aim to not only support these individuals while in the community, but give them the tools and the confidence to be able to access public transport, activities and other services themselves.

Collectively, we have over 50 years of experience in the social care sector, and have seen first-hand how good powerful, positive and appropriate support can be.

We have also seen how some individuals, through no fault of their own, can get stuck in the system and unable to move on and progress, using services that are at great

financial cost for long periods of time.

Our service is adaptable and based around the needs of any individual who may require support, as we believe that true support should be as people centred as possible. Every individual who requires support is different, and the support they are given will be suited to their needs.

The individual is firstly assessed in order to identify their current capacity and any risks associated with being in the community. They are then given a personalised plan to

support them in performing activities, accessing public transport, shopping, appointments, or whatever tasks are identified by the individual as important to them.

Our unique paperwork assesses individuals’

independence needs, meaning that we will know exactly at what stage an individual is struggling to complete a task and work with them to improve their skills in those areas.

It is crucial when providing a service that works with people that proper reviews and evaluations are done well. With a robust feedback procedure and incident reviews we can ensure that the service is safe and reflects on its own practice.

Every document that we produce for all individuals will be reviewed regularly to

ensure the service that is being provided is still right for that person and any changes will be made immediately.

We offer a pre-bookable sensory room within our business space for those in the community who may benefit. We also hold a disco on a weekly basis that can be used as an opportunity for individuals to practise their skills with money if they need it.

DEMOLITION WORK IS SET TO CHANGE TOWN CENTRE FOOTPRINT

Works to prepare Riverside Precinct and Chantry Buildings for demolition are now underway as part of a key milestone in the development of Forge Island.

Forge Island, which sits between the River Don and South Yorkshire Navigation Canal, will host a new leisure scheme with an 8-screen boutique style cinema, modern hotel, food and drink outlets and car parking. The facilities will be set within an attractive square with a new pedestrian bridge over the river connecting the island to the wider town centre.

The buildings being demolished on Corporation Street will open up the space between the Minster and Forge Island and transform the landscape, offering wonderful views of the river, Minster and the new development.

High-quality landscaping has already been created next to the canal, including new amphitheatre seating overlooking the lock.

This next phase of the Town Centre Masterplan follows on from work already progressing, including; revamped public realm on College

Street which will incorporate new onstreet pay & display parking bays, three new town centre housing sites and the transformation of the old Primark building on High Street into a pocket park.

Works to the public spaces on Bridgegate have now also been completed, with new paving, lighting and landscaping offering views of the Minster and allowing space for future pop-up events.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, Cllr Denise Lelliott, said: “We want to really make the most of the town’s natural assets. At one time, rivers were seen as industrial and dirty so buildings used to be built facing away from them, but times have changed. We also know how beautiful outdoor spaces and natural water can benefit health and wellbeing, as well as being a place where people can come together.

“We are having to adapt and move away from the more traditional use of the town centre, much like other areas across the country. We’re looking at what Rotherham town centre needs to thrive and that

means thinking differently and looking at how people will live in and use the town centre in years to come.”

As part of the works, Riverside car park, which is accessed off Corporation street, will be closed for 10 weeks. Diversions will also be in place for pedestrians accessing Forge Island car park from the town centre.

The Town Centre Masterplan includes three major housing developments at Wellgate, Westgate and Sheffield Road, as well as improvements to open spaces across College Street, Bridgegate, Howard Street and Effingham Street.

Works already completed as part of the Masterplan include the Transport Interchange, University Centre Rotherham and Forge Island Flood

Alleviation and Enabling scheme.

The Rotherham Town Centre Investment Fund, which was establish by the Council to deliver the Masterplan, is funding the town centre regeneration with further funding secured, and being sought, from other sources including the Government’s Future High Streets Fund and Transforming Cities Fund.

Beef brisket with horseradish mash

Serves 6

Prep: 20 mins Cook: 4 hours

Brisket is the cut just below the shoulder on the forequarter – the best cut for slow-cooking, not to mention one of the cheapest. Serve with horseradish mash or with old-school buttered noodles.

Preheat the oven to 160C.

Season the brisket, then cook, turning, for 8-10 minutes until browned. Remove from pan and set aside.

Place potato in a separate pan of cold, salted water. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 15-20 minutes until tender. Drain and return to pan. Heat gently, stirring, to remove any excess water. Mash until smooth. Add the milk, horseradish cream and remaining 25g butter. Season and stir until smooth.

• 2 tbs olive oil • 1.5kg corned beef brisket, uncooked (see Notes) • 2 onions, sliced • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 2 tablespoons tomato paste • 100ml tomato sauce (ketchup) • 100g dark brown sugar • 1 tablespoons onion powder • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika (pimenton) • 2 cups (500ml) chicken stock • 6 carrots, roughly chopped • 1 tablespoon chopped chives • 50g unsalted butter • 800g desiree potatoes, chopped • 1/2 cup (125ml) milk • 1 1/2 tbs horseradish cream

Cook, stirring, for 3-4 minutes until softened. Reduce heat to medium, add the garlic and cook for a further 1 minute or until fragrant. Add the tomato paste, tomato sauce, brown sugar, onion powder and paprika, then cook, stirring, for a further 1-2 minutes until well combined. Add the stock and bring to a simmer. Remove the brisket and rest, loosely covered with foil, for 10 minutes. Return casserole to medium-high heat and cook onion sauce for a further 5 minutes or until thickened.

Shred the brisket into thick slices and divide among plates with the horseradish mash and carrots. Top with the onion sauce to serve.
