Consultations under way on extension to public space protection orders A public consultation has now started on two Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO), one in the Town Centre, including Clifton Park, and a borough wide order specifically dealing with dog fouling.

The orders relating to anti-social behaviour and dog fouling are due to expire, however a new order can be made following public consultation.

The consultation on both PSPOs will focus on the existing conditions and the behaviours that have been identified within the proposed order.

Councillor Emma Hoddinott, Cabinet Member for Waste, Roads and Community Safety, said “These orders are put in place to ensure that people feel safe in the town centre and our neighbourhoods are kept free of dog fouling. Without this Public Space Protection Order, it makes it harder for the police and council officers to take action.

“We want to hear people’s views about the problems we are trying to address with this order and whether the extra powers will help tackle them. While incidents of anti-social

behaviour in the town centre and complaints of dog fouling across the borough have been declining since 2016, they are still some of the most common causes for complaint and we know that these remain relevant issues for people.”

The consultations are taking place through an online survey available on the Rotherham Council website from 3rd August until 30th August 2020 and will also include consultation with a broad range of individuals and organisations including parish councils, South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, community organisations, local businesses, ward councillors, and council officers.

In the past three years, 168 fines for breaches of the Town Centre Public Spaces Protection Order have been issued and a further 39 fines have been issued to individuals who have allowed their dogs to foul on land open to the public.

Following the consultation period, the findings will be submitted to Cabinet where a final decision will be made.

Regenerating Local Business Hi, my name is Nicola and I’m a Rotherham based businesswoman born and raised here in the local community. I went to Roughwood School, then Kimberworth Comprehensive School and later RCAT and enjoyed an early career in the borough before the bright lights of Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford beckoned.

Local business, and more to the point, Rotherham business has always been my passion and I’ve enjoyed great memberships with Rotherham Pioneers and the Chamber of Commerce to name but a few.

I am passionate about business on a local level and run networking groups in and around the borough and further afield. Maybe you have heard of REAL Networking (which is currently online and FREE) or Ladies Who Lunch?

These groups bring together businessmen and women from all backgrounds and helps them forge new relationships and hopefully business at some point.

I have been a personal injury Lawyer for 22 years but quit full time law last June as my wedding and event business had started to get busier. It was becoming increasingly difficult to dedicate sufficient time to the business whilst trying to hold down a 9-5 and I found myself working from 6am to 9pm most days of the week. Having said that, I did love it!

You Said Yes Weddings & Events was born about 3 years ago after a time spent managing weddings, events and festivals for one of Europe’s largest stately homes not too far

away from here as the crow flies!!

It was too late – I had been bitten by the eventing bug and set out to make myself a company which took pride in helping people with their weddings and events no matter what their budget.

There we were, happily skipping along with a full diary of events for 2020.

We hosted our first wedding fair of the year and our first market at Elesecar Heritage Centre – 1 week later COVID hit and our eventing world fell apart.

Nothing can prepare you for something like a pandemic. It’s the absolute unknown and panic quickly sets in.

Luckily, I am still a freelance Lawyer and I didn’t have the time to be bored whilst I concentrated my mind on my work for Walker & Co, a legal firm based in Maltby.

We are very fortunate to have contact with hundreds of exhibitors who we have worked with and stay in touch with and we were wondering how to get those people in front of the public safely during this period of lockdown.

This is when the idea of “online events” began to appeal. We therefore established a series of “online markets” and “online wedding fairs” which were a huge hit with the public.

It is also difficult to know when to start things again. When to be careful, when to plan and when to take a risk.

With this in mind we have contacted private land owners to hire us land so that we can take the leap of faith into outside markets before

the weather fails us. We have provided stringent risk assessments to Rotherham Council and South Yorkshire Police as well as licencing, and have jumped through every hoop thrown at us.

We are carefully planning our future events to ensure the safety of the public and our exhibitors.

This is of course our paramount concern along

with that of our event team and people who work alongside us. Everyone will be asked to sanitise on entry and also at points around the market. There will be a directional flow around the market itself and reminders of social distancing via leaflet and PA system. We have hired land large enough to ensure that there is plenty of space between

exhibitors so that people feel comfortable and at ease – after all we want everyone to enjoy this experience.

With good old fashioned community spirit and true Yorkshire grit we should be able to find ourselves a new “normal”. Where we can shop without worry and bring the family for a few hours out.

We are asking our local

community to help us spread the word about the market so that many more of you will visit and in turn you will be supporting local makers, bakers, traders, artisans and food and beverage stalls. If our first market on this site is a hit, then we will do it all again on 25 October so pop that date in your diary!!

“We Just Do Stuff”

Advice, Guidance and Support from Your local Chamber.

Put very simply, we are a network of businesses within a particular locality.

We work to further the interests of businesses in the area through engaging, networking opportunities and various other member benefits and every individual chamber is uniquely different.

Most local chambers represent the interest of their members with town councils or work in partnership with other local agencies. Most also host local networking events or promotions designed to spur business growth in the area. Members can often access helpful resources, expertise from other members and even discounts and exclusive opportunities from other businesses within the network.

So, if we all do this, how are we uniquely different and what can we do for you?

We quite often say when asked, “I don’t know, but I know someone who does!”

Which allows us to introduce the biggest asset we have in our Chamber, you the members. With

over 1100 diverse and wellconnected members, it is always likely that whatever problems or issues people have in their own businesses, there is always someone there to give good, sound advice because they have been through it before.

On the subject of being through it before, certainly in my time working with membership organisations and within the Chamber network, stretching back to 1986 we have never experienced anything like the past four months. I am sure in the history of our Chamber, going back to the 1870’s (aside from the two World Wars) businesses in our locality have never had to work as collaboratively and through the activities of the Chamber of Commerce we have been able to do this on your behalf.

Over the course of the past four months we have never had as much open and practical engagement with all our members

and even with some of those businesses who are not yet part of the Chamber. The working relationships with both our local authorities in Barnsley and Rotherham is at a premium and key strategic contacts with the city region mayor’s office and the local enterprise partnership have seen the Chamber bring influence on many of the key decisions being made as part of the region’s planning for recovery.

To claim regularly, as we do, that the Chamber offers Advice, Support and Guidance to all our local businesses is a very easy claim to make and one that often is difficult to quantify. However, whenever I am asked “well what does the Chamber really do”? Our activities during 2020 and the work of not only our staff but also the wider membership and our key partners will in future get a much more comprehensive response than “we just do stuff”!

Introducing Rotherham Town Under 11 Oranges Firstly, welcome to what we are hoping to be the first of our monthly articles here in YIP. We are hugely thankful to them for this fantastic opportunity. Now is probably a good time to let you know who ‘we’ are... We are Rotherham Town Under 11 Orange, an amazing group of boys – all of whom bring their own piece of unique and individual magic that makes an awesome team.

Well, actually, I suppose 'we' are the planners and the team make their magic work out on the pitch.

Our ethos is simple. Play.

Learn. Grow. This is embodied in everything that we do, and the number one priority is the kids, and them having fun while they learn along their journey with us. Simple.

However, these last few months have been anything but simple. Covid-19 quite literally put everything on pause. Work for most was on hold, school for most was on hold, and sports and recreation for most was put on hold. But every cloud has a silver lining, and our boys returned a few weeks ago to training when it was safe to do so. And boy did they return with a bang! Our boys have come back fighting, and they cannot wait to get going properly and playing games again in September when we have arranged a bunch of preseason friendlies for them against some tough opponents that will challenge them to the best of their abilities, but we know they will step up to the plate.

Roll on next month with our update for you all on how our super boys have done in their first few games.

Fit Millers Free adults weight loss programmes – September start At Rotherham United Sports College we deliver a number of high quality academic programmes of study in Further and Higher Education. Face to face sessions for both men and women will resume w/c 7th September.

Fit Fans is a 13 week programme for men and women aged 35-65 who are overweight or obese.

The programme is delivered on a Monday evening for women and a Thursday evening for men, 6.00pm-7.30pm at New York Stadium.

Each week we work through 45 minutes of discussion topics on healthy eating, activity, hydration and alcohol followed by 45 minutes activity. The activity sessions are tailored to those new to exercise, or those who have been out of the swing of things for a while.

Andy, a participant who started his journey with us back in January said ‘During the 6th week of the programme I had to have a medical at the GPs, the doctor couldn’t believe I was the same bloke, I had lost weight, but my blood pressure had fallen drastically. I felt brilliant, alcohol down to no more than 10 units per week, self-esteem and confidence growing all the time. Even my two boys who are both good athletes remarked on my fitness on one of our bike rides.’

My name is Georgia Bell and I am the owner of Society Salon based in Rotherham town centre My team and I specialise in all areas of colouring including bleach outs, balayage and brights.

Before opening my salon I really wanted to bring something more to my home town, I wanted to be progressive in not only colour application, but service, client experience and of course producing an outstanding end result.

At 30, I made the decision to retrain in hairdressing (this sounds a bold move) but in order to really push my vision I felt this was the only way

... now I don’t mean retrain in terms of taking myself back to college.

I took myself to London and retrained with the renowned Insta Famous.

The owner, Sophia Hilton took me under her wing and I quickly became the Head Assistant at their Academy.

I spent 2 years in London, learning colouring techniques you just don’t see in the North.Everything I learnt, I came back and retrained my current team.

My adventures to London have provided me

with greater opportunities.

I’m a member of a leading industry art teams and I work with many established brands.

Two days a week I work as a freelance educator both within the UK but also internationally. In November we are starting our own academy from the salon, teaching hairdressers from all over the UK - our very own Society colouring techniques.

at leading industry shows presenting our ideas and skills on stage. This year we are headlining the stage at Salon International in London for Hairdressers Journal Magazine; I’ll also be doing a demo for Denman Brush at Colour World.

Moving Homes – To Sell or not to sell?

When Rishi Sunak announced temporary changes to stamp duty land tax, the appeal to moving homes or buying “extra homes” has no doubt increased for many. With that in mind, I thought it would be good to explore the conundrum of to sell or not to sell, from a mortgage perspective. If you have been thinking of late that you might like to sell your house and up or downsize, have you considered the possibility of keeping it? Renting it out? And buying another home for you to live in?

If you are in this golden position of having repaid quite a bit of your mortgage, therefore are sitting on quite a bit of equity in your home – say 30% plus but ideally 50%, it is possible that you could rent your house out and buy a new one, therefore not selling your current home and turning your current home into an investment; making you money each month in rental income whilst your home is still yours to increase in value.

The Key to this is: How much equity do you have in your house How much is the house you want to buy What rental income will your house generate With these vital bits of information, a good broker will be able to guide you through this process and come back to you with the figures for this

To summarise, I believe that keeping your property and buying onwards can be a very positive situation for people who can emotionally cope with letting other people live in “their” home, have had their house on the market for a long time and not sold, want to be in a “chain free” –situation again for their next purchase, giving them a stronger position or want to grow an investment portfolio for extra income or retirement.

Former Nurse Links Up with Launchpad A former nurse who put her lifesaving skills to good use after her husband experienced a heart-attack,is now helping new parents and families to master essential life-saving skills after calling on help from Launchpad.

Claire Knight’s life changed overnight when her husband Thomas suffered a heart attack.

With a young family to care for while her husband recuperated, Claire began re-assessing her work-life balance and decided to leave the security of the NHS and make plans to launch her own business.

With a clear idea to help parents learn essential first aid skills,built around her teaching knowledge and nursing experience, , Claire began researching the assistance available to help her transform her ideas into a reality. She contacted the Sheffield City Region Launchpad programme and, with some trepidation, attended her first workshop.

After several months planning, developing and refining her ideas, the Whiston-based entrepreneur launched Rotherham-based Links Care in June 2019.

Claire realised she needed to build a customer base for her business. Selling her company’s services and charging individuals for the skills and expertise was something which did not come naturally. Working with an experienced Launchpad business adviser, Claire was able to access a range of workshops, training events and one-to-one support, helping to build her business confidence and identify new ways of securing customers for her fledgling business.

As the new entrepreneur began attending networking events, Claire spotted a unique niche in the marketplace. She realised that many new parents turned to A&E simply because they were unsure how to spot the signs of common childhood ailments. She realised by helping parents to master basic first-aid skills, it could not only help to reduce worry, but also avoid unnecessary trips to A&E. Like many businesses this year, Links Care was affected by COVID19. Claire began reassessing her business model and moved her training workshops online – something

she felt initially would not be practical. She was particularly concerned about teaching skills like Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, however her fears proved to be unfounded. Since launching her live online training sessions, Claire has been able to teach a minimum of two sessions a week and expand the geographical reach of her business.

With COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown measures beginning to ease, Claire is hoping to grow and develop her business further by providing parents with the flexibility to

attend online workshops as well as returning to delivering face-toface sessions.

Claire Knight, Managing Director of Links Care said: “I had enjoyed my career working with the NHS, but I always liked the idea of working for myself. When a colleague mentioned she was thinking of setting up her own business, I decided to join her at a Launchpad training event to find out more about selfemployment.

“I was excited about the prospect, but I knew starting a business would be a huge time

commitment. When my husband survived his heart attack, I began to re-evaluate my working life and spending time with my family and being able to work flexibly around the children was the most important thing to me.

“One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned since working with the Launchpad team has been the flexibility and opportunities which are open to you as an entrepreneur. When Covid-19 forced me to stop delivering my face-to-face sessions, I knew it would have a significant impact upon my business. I been considering moving some

elements of my training online, but I felt my business was not quite ready, for example, I was unsure whether resuscitation could be taught remotely. All that changed overnight and since launching our online live training sessions, demand for my services have risen significantly.

“The support I’ve received from Julia and the Launchpad team has been invaluable to my business. The workshops have helped me to develop a stronger grasp of the reality of running a business and the advice and support has helped me to unlock the potential in my business and as a result I’m now hoping to recruit additional nurses to help me delivery of my training services and grow the business further.”

Julia Millea, Business Adviser, Launchpad said: “Claire saw an opportunity to build a business around the skills she had developing during her nursing career. Like many people, she was initially apprehensive about leaving the security of employment, but when her circumstances at home changed, she began to realise running her own business could help her to achieve a better work-life balance.

Since lockdown I have worked from home, my dining table has become my work-station with the news channel as my daily companion. I guess being Custodian of The Rotherham Story, championing, celebrating and shouting about my home town, my brain is on permanent autotune picking up any mention of Rotherham from the distant hum of my TV and radio. Just this week I heard 2 of young students from Wales High School speak so eloquently about their ambitions and hope for a positive future despite the challenges of Coronavirus.

I was so proud to see Grimm & Co on BBC national TV, the presenters appearing to be genuinely surprised that this little gem is actually in Rotherham and being even more impressed when a young boy read out his amazing poetry. Founder Deborah Bullivant spoke so passionately about our place and their Virtual Literacy Gala ‘Here not There’ featured award winner actors and actresses such as Dame Julie Dench, Gary Oldman and Olivia Colman reading creative, imaginative tales written by yet more of our brilliant kids.

During lockdown some of our other local

gems have been in the headlines celebrating some wonderful achievements underpinned by resilience, determination and ambition the DNA of our town. Finalising a theme park in the middle of pandemic deserves worthy recognition as Gulliver’s Valley, Rotherham opened in July with fantastic reviews from families, equally Rotherham United Football Club being promoted to the Championship League is truly wonderful. We are blessed with beautiful landscape, amazing places and talented and kind people.

Over these past months I have been privileged to have worked with some of these wonderful people who have collaborated to continue to shine a light on the greatness of our place through the bleakness of Covid-19.

Money Matters £5000 worth of vouchers to be made available for insulation and double glazing with a New Green Home Grant Vouchers worth up to £5,000 will be issued to homeowners in England to make their homes more energy efficient under a new Government scheme that launches in September here's what we know about the scheme after a new update on 4 August.

As part of the Green Homes Grant scheme, eligible homeowners will be able to use the vouchers to help pay for environmentally friendly improvements such as installing loft, floor and wall insulation or replacing single glazing with double-glazing.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak outlined the plans, which will see the Government put aside £2 billion for green home upgrades, as part of his economic statement in July. And the Government has now released more details about what the vouchers will cover and who's eligible.

To be part of the scheme, tradespeople must register for TrustMark or Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accreditation.

South Yorkshire Beetles is a car club that was established in 2016 by myself John Ambler.

We welcome all types of Volkswagen beetles from the very new to the very old, water cooled to air cooled, show/custom to every day beetles.

But why did we set the club up? Well there wasn’t another car club around Yorkshire at the time that was only for beetles and I had just got my self a 1972 beetle. I was new to the beetle world and wanted some where I could ask questions and share my passion for beetles with other local people.

There also wasn’t any local events or a market place just for beetles.

So I set the group up, now its a very active group and has many local members who attend our club events and is now ran by a team of people who help keep it active and find events and days out for the club.

We attend many car shows and our members display their beetles on our club stands and from that we have won many trophies for best club stand.

When we are not attending car shows we like to arrange days out for our club. We always make sure its suitable for children so the whole family can come along and have fun.

For example we put booked a field at a local pub and did a sports days for everyone to join in from sack racing, egg and spoon and ring toss. There where trophies for fastest times for adults but every child who joined in got a trophy too. Then other times we have done days out to places like Newark Air Museum where some of our member got special privilege of taking photos with their beetles right up and close to some of the planes and also South Yorkshire Transport Museum where they have am open day so you get to view some classic transport vehicles.

group so no sign up charge to be part of it.

The facebook group is a good place to share pictures of your beetle with all of our members.

We like to see all beetles not just show room condition ones, most of our members beetles are used everyday. Also if you are stuck and need help its a great place to ask questions, a lot of times its hard to ask question on other car club groups with out getting silly answers or you are too scared because it may be a simple answer question to ask but in our club we welcome all questions and you will always get the right answer.

Another reason to be part of the club is you can receive discounts at some great places so its ideal if you are building up a project or looking to service your beetle, who doesn’t like to save a bit of cash.

We pride our selfs on being a very friendly club to be part of and will always make sure what ever the club has planned it will be fun for the whole family no matter the age.

The club wouldn’t be where is it today though with out all our wonderful members who keep the club alive and a friendly club to be part of, so come and join our free club. Charlotte’s Chicken Pie with a suet crust This chicken pie is my daughter’s favourite and I must admit it’s pretty delicious. It’s quite simple to make and I usually have a small amount of the filling left so I freeze it and then when someone just needs a meal for one I simply defrost it and just make the crust. You can add other ingredients to the filling, such as, peas and carrots but my kids are a bit fussy! Also, make a traditional pie top if you prefer – even get a ready roll shortcrust pastry to make things really simple. I’ve also done it before with a scone cobbler top. It’s a versatile recipe.

Method: Cut the chicken into chunks and the bacon into pieces. Fry together in a large shallow pan.

Halve the mushrooms and add them to the chicken and bacon. Also add the tarragon.

Everything should be well browned as this adds flavour.

Sprinkle the flour over the ingredients in the pan and stir it so that it coats everything

Slowly add cold water and combine together to make a dough – I use a knife to do this as the dough sticks inside the spoon if not. The dough should be well combined and not too sticky so that when you roll it out it doesn’t stick to the rolling pin. If it is too sticky, just add more flour.

Transfer the filling to a large pie dish and cover with the rolled dough and prick.

Cook in the oven at 210*C for approx. 25 mins or until the crust is golden.

CRUST: 1 ½ large mug of SR flour ¾ mug of suet Water to bind Salt/pepper
