Full order book for unshakeable Rotherham entrepreneur

Steve Mumby (second from left) with the Creative Fab Worx team A determined Sheffield / Rotherham based furniture maker has pulled through the lockdown by staying one-step ahead and refusing to give up when Covid-19 hit.

When other businesses were frantically looking at new and different ways to navigate the storm that was to come, Steve Mumby quickly adapted.

Working smarter and harder, he and his small team of master craftsmen are now coming out the other side even stronger.

Steve, originally from Rotherham, founded Creative Fab Worx in 2017. From humble beginnings and being entirely

self-taught, he has a fierce resilience and unshakeable determination to succeed.

When the lockdown hit, he was able to honour all existing orders, though many pending orders were put on hold; and three customers ceased trading almost overnight.

“I certainly wasn’t going to give up because of a virus” he says, “but I was prepared to adapt”.

“I work with some amazing craftsmen, all of whom are incredibly talented and loyal. I was forced to reduce their hours so that I could stagger their presence in the work-shop and

adhere to social distancing rules - but this meant that nobody faced being furloughed, or worse.” he explained.

The toughest challenge was the lockdown’s effect on deliveries. With up to 50% of the furniture’s price payable on delivery, cash-flow was badly affected.

But the business qualified for the Small Business Grant Scheme, which ensured they could get hold of the raw materials needed to fulfil orders, pay the rent for their workshop and continue to operate.

“This was greatly reassuring

for us” he said, pointing out “our Landlord is one of the good guys and he still needed to get paid, so this grant was crucial!”

During the lockdown, Steve spent a great deal of time reflecting on his business and finding solutions to run more efficiently in the future. He launched a new website and developed a robust, effective marketing strategy. Social media has helped the business to stay connected and keep his customers informed that they are still very much open for business.

They’ve had to change the way they work going forward,

mainly due to social distancing measures. The workshop is now covered in health & safety related stickers and floor markings and they are fully stocked up with hand sanitiser, gloves and masks.

When asked if he is optimistic for the future, he revealed “Our order book is full and we can’t wait to get back out to see our customers faces when we install their individual statement furniture pieces. I’m so lucky to have such a great team around me. I’ve big plans for growth so, yes, I’m incredibly optimistic about the future.”

Mega Subway Sandwiches in the heart of Rotherham Subway on Rotherham High Street, opposite the old Primark unit, have kept Subway lovers hunger at bay for the last 8 years. plans for Forge Island approved by the planning board which is particularly important as the town centre begins to find its feet again as lockdown eases a little. We know residents are keen to see the area develop and this is an important

People passing by Forge Island in Rotherham will now be able to see the Masbrough Weir fish pass, thanks to a partnership between Don Catchment Rivers Trust, Canal and River Trust, the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.

For the first time in 200 years salmon will have a fully joined up river so that they can get to their first available spawning grounds in the centre of Sheffield.

Speaking about the project, Anthony Downing, Environment Agency catchment coordinator for the Don and Rother, said: “It is very exciting that this month we will see the completion of the fish pass at Forge Island. With Sheffield City Council also finishing the fish pass on Sanderson’s weir, this will open the entire migratory route from the North Sea to spawning grounds upstream of Sheffield.

“The work to open up the route has been a great partnership effort involving many organisations to enable fish passage at 18 previously unpassable weirs and hopefully we will now see a sustainable salmon population in the river Don after an absence of around 200 years. Not only will salmon benefit from the fish passes but

many can be used by other species increasing connectivity and benefiting other wildlife in the river corridor.”

It was in the early 1990s that there were reports of salmon being caught in the lower Don around Doncaster, which was a strong sign that more life was returning to the river. These sightings of salmon set the wheels in motion for organisations to start talking about how to enable them to return to spawning habitat in the Pennines.

The removal of Crimpsall sluice in Doncaster, and water quality improving on the river Don gave the inspiration for organisations to work together on a vision to enable salmon to get back up to spawning grounds in the upper catchment for the first time in 200 years.

Masbrough weir is 18th major obstruction that has been made passable, allowing salmon to move freely up and down the river. Dr Ben Gillespie, Technical specialist (river resilience) at Yorkshire Water said: “At Yorkshire Water we are invested in improving and maintaining the environment around us. Bringing community banking to Sheffield Last month Metro Bank, the UK’s community bank opened its 77th store in the heart of Sheffield on Fargate. It’s the bank’s first store in Yorkshire and part of the challenger bank’s expansion into the North of England where it plans to open 15 stores in the north in the coming years. In the past year Metro Bank has also opened stores in Manchester and Liverpool.

According to analysis from Which?, Yorkshire and The Humber has seen more than 280 banks close since 2015. Metro Bank is bucking this trend and continues to open stores while other banks make closures.

The bank has a long-standing belief in “people-people banking” – having been built on the philosophy that whatever happens in the future of banking, people need people and value human relationships.

The bank offers personal, business and private banking services, giving customers the choice to bank however, whenever and wherever they choose. Whether that’s face-toface banking in store, on the phone, online or via its mobile app.

Metro Bank prides itself on being a community bank and supporting local people and businesses, and this has never been important. The new store in Sheffield has created 25 new jobs in the city and employs local people who know the city and its residents.

Jackie Freeborn, Custodian of The Rotherham Story My role as the Custodian of The Rotherham Story, promoting all that is good and great about our town, brings me in contact with many other great advocates for this place that is home to me and my family. There are a few people whose names are etched into the DNA of a place, so that when you think about either, both come to mind.

Like Sir Bobby Charlton and Manchester, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Liverpool and, of course, local football legend, John Breckin with our very own Rotherham, known and loved by many as ‘Breck’.

John is wedded to Rotherham, he has chosen to live his life here, deflected the temptation of bright city lights or more prestigious and prosperous places. What is it in our town that gives him this loyalty and pride? If I could capture its essence, bottle it and sprinkle it throughout the Borough, well, my role as Custodian of The Rotherham Story – promoting the positive – would be a walk in the park.

So, I asked him and this is what he said.

“Rotherham is my life’s blood. It has given me a career in football that I dreamed of as I shared Saturday afternoons with my dad watching Rotherham United, the club that my Uncle Eddie once played for. Growing up in Masbrough there wasn’t much
