WHAT’S ON

Welcome to The Menuhin Hall’s 2023 Spring/Summer season.
Alongside The Yehudi Menuhin School’s traditional Showcase concerts – including a Debut Showcase for pupils who have yet to appear at The Menuhin Hall –our world-class concert venue plays host to a number of exciting events, including a visit from the National Youth Harp Orchestra, the return of Gary Hoffman and a concert featuring the award-winning Sitkovetsky Trio, who will perform side-by-side with YMS pupils.
Of particular note is the memorial concert for Margaret Norris, who was a devoted teacher at the School for over 30 years. The impact that she had on generations of young musicians will be represented by the return of many YMS alumni for a moving tribute to Margaret’s remarkable musical legacy.
Our annual Founder’s Day concert features YMS staff performing alongside pupils and recent graduates, including the 2020 BBC Young Musician of the Year Strings winner, Coco Tomita.
The School’s Summer Festival, which also marks the launch of the School’s 60th birthday celebrations, has been given a major revamp this year. There will be solo performances spread throughout the summer term in a Friday-evening Summer Solos series celebrating the culmination of the pupils’ work over the course of the year. Then the Summer Festival itself will showcase the diverse range of musical activity which defines YMS, including orchestral concerts, a Family Day centred around Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals (featuring new texts and artwork produced by the School), chamber music recitals, solos from students in their final year of study and appearances by two of our Associate Artists, Maxim Rysanov and Alexander Sitkovetsky. In a spectacular Festival Finale we will round off the year with a performance of Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9 in a special arrangment for two pianos and choir and in collaboration with the Music in Secondary Schools Trust.
Looking forward, as it does, the Summer Festival provides a nod to the School’s 60th birthday celebrations beginning in September 2023. I trust you’ll find something to whet your appetite and I look forward to welcoming you to The Menuhin Hall in the coming months.
Ashley Wass Director of MusicPupil Showcases are at the heart of our programme here at The Menuhin Hall. After the hours of hard work mastering technique and perfecting the nuances of interpretation, this is when our extraordinary young musicians can share their passion with a real, live audience and you can experience the captivating talent of some of the finest young musicians in the world.

Past and present pupils and colleagues gather to celebrate violin teacher Margaret Norris’s 60-year contribution to both their own musical lives and that of The Yehudi Menuhin School.
Margaret was a member of staff at the original school when it opened in London back in 1963 and she remained devoted to it, living on-site for 25 years, writing the music timetables and, of course, teaching the violin. She built many long-lasting relationships with countless pupils, and it is in tribute to her that so many talented and diverse musicians are returning to The Menuhin Hall for this memorial concert.
The evening will be a rekindling of old childhood partnerships and the forging of new collaborations between musicians from different decades. The second half will culminate in the coming together of 60 years of musical history, with current pupils playing alongside alumni, building new memories on the foundations of the past.

Arensky Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky
Shostakovich
Piano Concerto No. 2
Tchaikovsky Suite No. 1 for Orchestra
Philip Ellis Conductor
Surrey Mozart Players return to The Menuhin Hall with a programme of tributes, homages and celebrations. On hearing of the death of his great friend, mentor and supporter Tchaikovsky, Anton Arensky composed his beautiful and heartfelt Tchaikovsky Variations as part of his second string quartet. Realising that he had created a gem, he re-scored the work for string orchestra, a much-treasured addition to the legacy of Tchaikovsky.
Antonina Suhanova Piano
Shostakovich’s second piano concerto was a birthday present – a father’s proud and loving gift to his son Maxim on his graduation from the Moscow Conservatoire. Two movements of celebration and high spirits, frame a stunning, achingly beautiful slow movement of Mozartian lyricism. Tchaikovsky’s Suite No. 1 for Orchestra is a celebration of the Baroque dance suite and a precursor of his great ballet music. Displaying astounding innovation and imagination this work shows us the full range of Tchaikovsky’s genius.
Antonina Suhanova is supported by The Musicians’ Company.

Told from the perspective of the very first Master of the King’s Musick, Nicholas Lanier – played by the British star of stage and screen Henry Goodman* – as he travels back and forth in time, the show covers several centuries, numerous monarchs and countless composers.
The evening promises to be a quirky and often comical entertainment, full of fascinating anecdotes and wonderful music.
