Welcome Welcome to The Menuhin Hall’s Spring/Summer season.

Providing a platform for the exceptional pupils of The Yehudi Menuhin School is very much our focus.

With this in mind, we begin the new season with an International Women’s Day showcase (8 March) that will be highlighting the extraordinary contribution women have made to the world of music. During April, May and June, our exciting series of Summer Solos (see page 3) provides the opportunity both for every pupil to perform solo in The Menuhin Hall and you to enjoy the extraordinary talent of our future musical stars.

Our overarching theme for the season – The Elements – weaves its way through our programming, reaching its climax in the Summer Festival (29 June–5 July).

During these seven, exceptional, music-filled days, programmes will include Haydn’s Fire Symphony, Max Richter’s vivid re-imagining of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and two works by our Composer in Residence, Sally Beamish: her glorious transcription of Debussy’s La Mer for piano trio and her setting of the powerful Anglo-Saxon poem, The Seafarer, for piano trio and narrator. For the latter, we are particularly excited to welcome one of the world’s most famous vocal stars – the bass-baritone, Sir Willard White – who will perform alongside pupils in a semi-staged setting that is sure to ignite our senses as we voyage across the seas.

Also included in the Summer Festival are two Leavers’ Showcases, providing those who are graduating in ’24 with one final opportunity to perform as soloists in The Menuhin Hall. The second of these showcases will finish with the traditional presentation of leavers’ scores, a particularly moving moment in the School’s calendar.

Our Artist in Residence, Julian Bliss, joins us the following evening in a concert that will be exploring the intersection between jazz and classical as well as celebrating the 100th anniversary of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue – arguably the most famous solo in the clarinet’s repertoire. To finish the Summer Festival, we head to the cinema and take a look at some of the wonderful music that has been associated with the silver screen. Featuring live soundtracks to film projections, along with original film scores and classical masterpieces, this promises to be a festive finale not to be missed!

Showcases

Pupil Showcases Friday 8 March 7.30pm Thursday 21 March 7.30pm Tickets: £10–£21, under 30s half price Showcases by the pupils of The Menuhin School are at the heart of our programme at The Menuhin Hall. After countless hours of hard work, this is when our extraordinary young musicians can share their music with the public, and you can experience the captivating talent of some of the finest young musicians in the world.

Taking place on International Women’s Day, our concert on 8 March will focus on music written by women and will celebrate the incalculable contribution women have made in the world of music; from household names to hidden gems, this will be a truly special evening to discover works of great power and exquisite beauty.

To celebrate our newly launched First Study Composition Programme, works written by members of the School community feature heavily in our programming this year. Nestled among a bouquet of solos, showpieces and chamber works, our Showcase on 21 March will feature the Concertino for Solo Violin and String Orchestra by composer, conductor and Menuhin School professor Matthew Taylor, whose contributions to the symphonic and chamber repertory are among the most significant achievements in contemporary British music.

These concerts offer an opportunity for our pupils to showcase the repertoire they are currently working on and, as such, the programme is released nearer to the concert date. Surrey Mozart Players presents three beguiling masterpieces by composers not trying too hard to impress. Fauré’s response to a royal commission for the Monte Carlo Theatre was to revamp some early songs and a discarded symphonic movement. These brilliant Masques et Bergamasques would become one of his most celebrated works.

Poulenc Sinfonietta

Mozart gave his very best to produce a splendid Oboe Concerto for Archbishop Colloredo, which he later recycled as a flute concerto. Finally, when reviewers complained that Poulenc’s radiant Sinfonietta – commissioned by the BBC Third programme in 1947 – lacked gravitas, he responded that they should not try to analyse his music – just enjoy it.

Once again, The Arts Society in Surrey (East and West Surrey Areas) is presenting The Sitkovetsky Trio with Sharon Kam and Friends introduced by renowned broadcaster Kate Kennedy at a concert and lecture in partnership with the Surrey Hills International Music Festival.

The evening will feature a talk by Kate Kennedy, a performance by the awardwinning Sitkovetsky Trio with Sharon Kam and Friends, plus a free Souvenir Programme Book and a glass of wine.

Launch into space aboard the Menuhin spacecraft as we explore our solar system through Gustav Holst’s extraordinary work, The Planets. Written between 1914 and 1917, this undeniable cornerstone of 20th-Century music has inspired many other musical creations, from hymns at royal weddings to the score for Star Wars.

Featuring arrangements by The Menuhin School community for a large chamber ensemble and accompanied by narration, lighting and projections washing the stage with images, there will be something to discover for the whole family during an afternoon of exhilarating exploration.

At a time when we face endless challenges to protect the environment around us, this is an evening to remind us of what we have. From thistles, each a ‘revengeful burst of resurrection’, in Menuhin School alumna Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s The Whole Earth Dances, to the undulating serenity of Takemitsu’s Between Tides and a selection of Debussy’s timeless Preludes, the first half of this concert is a perfect accompaniment to Max Richter’s Four Seasons Recomposed, a stunning homage and rescoring of the Vivaldi originals – very likely the best-known nature-inspired works of all time. And like the thistles and ferns, hills and tides, this is music at its most raw, uncompromising and endlessly moving.

Lectures Lecture series by local societies have formed an integral part of The Menuhin Hall’s programme of events from the outset, with The Arts Society, East Surrey Area as well as the Claremont & Oxshott Arts Society and Surrey U3A all holding regular lectures here. On a number of occasions lecture days will also feature short taster performances by The Menuhin School’s pupils.

Study days are open to all U3A members and guests are very welcome. The days start at 9.30am with registration and run from 10.00am to 4.00pm. We now offer hybrid events so that members who wish can view the study days from home. Wednesday 13 March The Seine estuary: capturing the 19th-Century imagination Carole Petipher The ever-changing sky and sparkling Seine estuary attracted 19th-Century artists, writers and musicians. Monet took his firstever painting lesson here in the open air.

A new way to approaching art was opened up resulting in Impressionism and a host of artists flocked to the picturesque harbour of Honfleur and its surroundings.

Wednesday 10 April The Borgias: the most infamous family in history Sarah Dunant Murder, poison, corruption and incest: all perfect ingredients for sensational popular culture.

In an age known for its brutality and church corruption, were the Borgias really so bad?

The Divine Sarah Anne Anderson Sarah Bernhardt was more than a famous actress; she was one of the first celebrities.

She was a businesswoman, fashion icon, sculptor, theatre director and courtesan. She pushed the gender boundaries.

The History of the Royal Academy Rosalind Whyte

Brueghal: the Seasons and the World Gavin Plumley

Looking at the position of artists in London before and after the formation of the Royal Academy in 1768 and some of the characters involved, from the first President Sir Joshua Reynolds to his contemporary and great rival Gainsborough, the Pre-Raphaelites.

Like any important institution, the Academy has been embroiled in intrigue and controversy over the course of its history.

Pre-Brueghel, landscape had been little more than a decorative backdrop to dramas both sacred and profane. In Brueghel’s hands the landscape and our interaction with it became the focus. This lecture explores how Brueghel pioneered a whole new way of thinking about the environment and our individual places within a shifting cosmos.

Friday 12 April The Art of Illusion: Now You See it Now You Don’t Bertie Pearce The well-loved speaker and magic maker Bertie Pearce beguiles and fascinates us with an in-depth look at the profound mystery of perception. There is a primal enjoyment in being deceived by optical illusions, as artists from the 16th Century onwards, including Hogarth, Holbein and Magritte have all shown us, through double imagery, trompe d’oeil, anamorphic art and other illusions. The second talk takes us back even earlier to the days when sorcerer priests used scientific principles to create illusions to hold power over people. This is a whistle-stop tour of the history of mystery from 3000BC to the 21st Century, taking in the earliest illusionists, through music hall, to Harry Potter and the magic of iPads. You might be amazed and bewitched.

By Train: Cobham & Stoke d’Abernon Station is on the Guildford via Cobham line from London Waterloo. Taxis are available at Cobham Station. Cobham cars: 01932 863335

By Car: The Hall is easily accessible from the M25 junctions 9 (Leatherhead) and 10 (Cobham). The Hall is a few minutes’ drive from Cobham and Fetcham.

From Cobham and Leatherhead: follow signs towards Fetcham and Bookham, driving past Squire’s Garden Centre. The Hall is on the right, immediately after crossing the M25 flyover.

From Fetcham: follow the road towards Cobham. Keep an eye out for a stone sign on the left indicating The Menuhin School’s white upper gate; drive past this entrance and after a few tight bends you will reach The Menuhin Hall’s main entrance, just before the M25 flyover.

Accessibility The Menuhin Hall is a level access venue with seating for disabled patrons in the Stalls. Patrons who need the assistance of a frame or crutches should please contact the Box Office for advice.

Wheelchair patrons will be issued with a parking permit to enable level access to the venue. Issued permits will ensure that a seat is removed in the Auditorium to allow wheelchair access.

Only patrons who have been allocated a Menuhin Hall parking permit by the Box Office may park in these bays.

Blue badge holders may park in the 6 unreserved bays available in the lower car park. Please note that access from the lower car park involves 13 steps and an 80-yard walk. Patrons who require level access to the building can be dropped off behind the Hall in the parking permit area. Assistance can be provided by a member of staff if required.

A loop system is installed. Headsets for infrared audio are available from the Box Office.

Guide Dogs are welcome. Please advise the Box Office in advance so that an appropriate aisle seat can be provided.
