Welcome

Welcome to The Menuhin Hall’s Autumn/Winter 2023/24 season.

Yet again we are thrilled to bring you an eclectic season of showstopping concerts, focusing on the theme of the elements, that range from a spine-tingling Remembrance Day Showcase on Saturday 11 November to a toe-tapping soirée of virtuoso jazz on Thursday 29 February, and our old Christmas favourite, The Snowman, to delight all ages on our Family Day (Sunday 10 December), when you can also enjoy carol singing and a mini-Christmas market.

Our season opens on Thursday 28 September with an exquisite foray into some of Schumann’s best-loved chamber music performed by The Yehudi Menuhin School’s Associate Artist, Maxim Rysanov, together with world-renowned clarinettist Julian Bliss and pianist Dasol Kim. We are delighted to announce that this will be Julian’s introductory concert as our first Artist in Residence. Testament to his extraordinary ability to communicate the gamut of the human experience through the clarinet, Julian will return in Messiaen’s powerful Quartet for the End of Time on Remembrance Day and with his highly acclaimed Julian Bliss Septet on Thursday 29 February.

We are equally delighted to announce another first for this season. To mark the launch of The Menuhin School’s new Composition Study programme this academic year, we welcome Sally Beamish OBE as our inaugural Composer in Residence. Not only is Sally one of the UK’s leading composers, but she is also an immensely accomplished violist and chamber musician who will be performing her Partita for String Octet with our pupils on Monday 11 December as part of our Winter Festival (10–13 December). Indeed, the Winter Festival promises to be a spectacular one, and we are thrilled to welcome internationally renowned violinist David Grimal to lead/direct Vaughan Williams’ glorious Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis as part of our Finale.

At the heart of our concert seasons are the pupils of The Yehudi Menuhin School who are some of the finest young musicians in the world. They will perform throughout the season alongside our celebrity artists and will continue to feature in our popular Pupil Showcases (see page 5) that give you the opportunity to hear the phenomenal talent of these exceptional young people.

I very much look forward to seeing you at The Menuhin Hall in the months ahead.

Korngold

Suite for Two Violins, Cello and Piano Left Hand Op 23

Messiaen

Quartet for the End of Time

Written only 11 years apart, these two astonishing works of the 20th century provide a rare musical insight into history, reflecting both on the horror of war and human perseverance, which remain as relevant today as they were back then.

Commissioned by concert pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in WWI, Korngold’s Suite for Two Violins, Cello and Piano Left Hand is a chamber work of immense proportions and depth that demands incredible technical agility from the pianist. This evening, Director of Music Ashley Wass will be joined by pupils of The Yehudi Menuhin School to perform this extraordinarily powerful piece of music that was composed in 1930.

Messiaen’s legendary Quartet for the End of Time was written in 1941 while the composer was a prisoner of war in Silesia. Our Artist in Residence, Julian Bliss will be playing the work’s hauntingly beautiful clarinet part in this special concert that promises an evening of remembrance, reflection and, above all, profound hope for musicians and audience alike.

There will be a pre-concert talk with pianist and presenter Keelan Carew who will explore the life and world of Paul Wittgenstein and the story behind the evening’s works.

Natalia Lomeiko and Dinara Klinton with Pupils of The Yehudi Menuhin School

Thursday 23 November 7.30pm

Tickets: £10–£27, under 30s half price

Join us for an evening of evocative music by Szymanowski and Schumann with violinist and alumna Natalia Lomeiko, and Professor of Piano Dinara Klinton. In the second half of the concert, they will be joined by some of The Menuhin School’s exceptional young musicians to present Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major. Continuing our exploration of the composer from our earlier concert in September, this work shows Schumann at the pinnacle of his artistic skill and output. This ground-breaking work established the piano quintet as a genre in its own right and accelerated the arrival of chamber music, previously reserved for the private salon, to the concert hall with its symphonic scope and grandeur.

Brahms

Piano Quintet in F minor

Op 34

It is always a special joy to bring together current and past pupils of the School. This evening we are delighted that pianist Kathryn Stott, who was just eight years old when she joined the School in the 1960s, will be sharing the stage with today’s young musicians as they join forces to perform works by Fauré – a speciality of Stott. The second half is dedicated to one of the great cornerstones of chamber music repertory: Brahms’ monumental Piano Quintet in F minor.

Since leaving The Yehudi Menuhin School, where Kathryn was particularly influenced by the legendary Nadia Boulanger and Vlado Perlmuter, her career has not only taken her to most of the world’s greatest concert halls, but her work as a chamber musician has also seen her perform with many major artists including a long-standing collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

A Dickens of a Christmas

Dickens has often been called “the man who invented Christmas.” He revived Christmas with his warm portrayal of Christmas in the domestic setting: plum pudding, turkey, games and family cheer by the hearth. Published on 29 December 1843, his enduring masterpiece, A Christmas Carol immortalises the spirit of Christmas. Bertie’s lecture is a fun insight into a Dickensian Christmas.

1.00pm Approximate end of Special Interest Morning

Tickets: £22 per person (two lectures, coffee/tea on arrival and during the interval)

This morning of lectures and discussion will provide a broad introduction to the arts of Japan and historic encounters between Japan and the West. It will focus on episodes of artistic interaction and exchange beginning with the 16th-century depictions of Portuguese traders and missionaries in namban screen paintings to the Dutch presence in Japan during the Edo Period.

With the re-opening of Japan to the West in the mid-19th Century, such artistic encounters intensified as ukiyo-e, Japanese woodblock prints, and other traditional artefacts poured into Europe and America and came

to transform the visual vocabulary of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionist painters.

Professor Marie Conte-Helm OBE is an established Lecturer of The Arts Society with a BA in History of Art and an MA in Asian Art. She has most recently served as Executive Director of the UK-Japan 21st Century Group and as Visiting Professor at Northumbria University. She is currently a Member of the Board of Governors of the University for the Creative Arts and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She was Director General of the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation from 1999–2011 and has held senior academic positions at various UK universities.

She is widely published and has lectured throughout the UK and abroad. She is also an experienced cruise speaker and a resident historian with cruise companies, lecturing on many aspects of Asian Art and East-West Encounters. She was awarded an OBE in the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to UK-Japan educational and cultural relations, and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette by the Government of Japan in 2019.
