Chief Minister cum Chairman of Yayasan Sabah Board of Trustees, Datuk Joseph Pairir, :<itingan officially opened the M$4.8 million YS Sports Centre on December 17, 1991. The official opening was made in conjunction with the launching of the 4th YS Inter-District Sports Carnival which was held for five days. The biennial meet was participated by 402 staff from four contingents - Tawau, Sandakan, Lahad Datu and host Kota Kinabalu. In his speech the CM expressed his hope that the Sports Centre could be used as a tool in promoting interaction and harmony among the staff besides creating an avenue for a balanced and healthy lifestyle which is important for greater productivity among staff. He said, in a diverse society like Sabah, sports can, indeed, be an important medium for fostering unity and an effective tool in national integration. With the new Sports Centre, ICSB hopes to play its role in creating a harmonious, active and healthy society. This is indeed in line with the aspiration of our former Prime Minister, the late The raising of the carnival's flag to mark the launching of the InterDistrict Sports Carnival
"A development programme that emphasises only on making sky-reaching buildings is not enough to be satisfied with. Recreational and sports facilities are needed to complete the development process ...." Indeed on December 17, Innoprise Corporation Sdn Bhd (ICSB), the investment arm of Yay as an Sabah, has fullilled this call. On a 1a-acre site just a stone's throwaway from the majestic Yayasan Sabah Headquarters building, stood a mini sports complex with modern sporting facilities ready to serve staff of YS/ICSB and the public. Its name - YS Sports Centre - reflects an image which is closely associated with the building within its vicinity; the Yayasan Sabah Headquarters premise. The Sports Centre was first mooted in 1986 in response to the growing needs for sporting facilities among staff of YS/ICSB who were then heavily dependent on the Likas Sports Complex for all their sporting activites. Construction of the Sports Centre started in 1988 and was completed early last year.
