Yayasan Sabah's performance will depend largely on the achievement and success of the People Development (PO) Programme said Chief Minister, DatukJoseph Pairin Kitingan, who is also the Chairman of YS Board of Trustees.
He was pleased to note that there has been obvious signs of altitudinal change among the PO community which, he said, clearly showed that they were motivated enough to improve themselves.
Addressing staff of YS/ICSB at its Annual Address gathering on December 21, Datuk Pai~in said this was because all of Yayasan's social projects were based on the PO concept which stressed on rural community development particularly the rural poor ever since the concept was launched as Yayasan's new direction four years ago.
"It is, therefore, our responsibility as facilitators to increase and sustain their level of motivation. One way of doing this is by looking for good marketing outlets for their products as they would surely feel de motivated if their products could not be marketed,' said Datuk Pairin.
On PO's progress, Datuk Pairin said seven new centres were established in 1991 which brought the total number to 34 centres. Besides increasing the number of centres, the functions of the centres were also revised whereby all the 34 centres were required to carry out In-situ development programmes while 20 of the PO centres continued to implement youth entrepreneurship programmes besides carrying out in-situ community development programmes.
He was pleased to note that the Institute for People Development (IPD) had produced its first batch of 25 graduates in Wood Technology last year while courses on Building and Construction and the second intake of Wood Technology had also been started. According to Datuk Pairin, IPD was also in the process of becoming a Community College with the assistance of the Association of Canadian Community College.
"A total of 212 youths were trained in the PO centres producing a total of 160 entrepreneural projects which were planned by the participants.
However, only 103 of the projects have successfully been in operation; some of which are giving encouraging returns,' said Datuk Pairin
Touching on Yayasan's future challenges, Datuk Pairin said Yayasan's biggest challenge (continued next •.
