ZIP Supreme Chapter President Speech

Good afternoon esteemed Supreme Board members, past presidents, and XI Psi Phi members for attending this meeting. I would like to also thank Dr Troy Jones and Stacey Jones for the hospitality that they’ve displayed in organizing our meeting in San Antonio, and welcoming us to the great state of Texas.

It is with immense gratitude that I stand before you today accepting the great honor of serving as president of our XI Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity. As we embark on this new term together let’s first reflect on the rich legacy of Xi Psi Phi. Our fraternity has been an excellent example of lifelong friendships that develop while in dental school and carried on after graduation. We have provided assistance and awards to students, raised donations for the Ronald McDonald House charity and showcased our motto of “hospitality is the life of friendship” in all activities and functions. We stand on the shoulders of giants who came before us and dedicated themselves to our fraternity.

When I entered dental school I knew no one. I joined ZIP in first year with a few classmates and we became friends in the class but especially outside the school. There are some of these individuals that became lifelong friends together with whom we have celebrated marriages and divorces, births and deaths. ZIP soon became a larger part of my years in dental school. I joined the executive in various positions until in my fourth year I became the first woman President of our chapter in 100 years. After graduation, I returned to be an instructor at the faculty when Dr. Paul Monczka, the Chapter Advisor at the time, recruited me to take over his position. The Supreme Assembly meeting of 2001 in St. Louis became my first of many. When I arrived, I must have looked a bit wide eyed and bewildered. But one of the first to welcome me by name was Dr. John Hayes and then the big voice of Dr. George Knight with his moustache followed up his welcome with a big hug. Ah yes, I had found my people!! Dr. Keith Dickey with his intimate knowledge of the workings of the fraternity and his endless emails, I was

soon enveloped into the inner circle.

As I was reflecting on what my password word be, I came up with several options and reasons why I would chose them. Then, as if he could read my mind, Dr. Dickey sends me yet another email with all the past passwords and I perused the list, wouldn’t you know that everyone single one I had chosen had already been used. All I can say is great minds think alike. But now, I was back at square one.

As I was thinking, my mother’s words came into my mind. My mom used to say to me not to dwell on the past, but learn from it and look towards the future because you can still mould and change it. As we look to the future we must recognize challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The landscape of dentistry is constantly evolving included is the advancement in technology, the changing of health care and patients, and also dental school education. It is important that we adapt, innovate and move forward into the future. So my choice of PASSWORD is FUTURE. I’m hoping to work with strong student chapters to learn how they function and pass along that information to try and keep smaller ones active. With the assistance of alumni and present students, I’m hopeful that we can repeat the success that Dr Tim Regan has had in rejuvenating Beta.

In the spirit of fraternity, I hope we can look to the future and forge ahead with courage, resilience and determination. Just like the Toronto Maple Leafs, we need to discover new opportunities, think outside the box and use teamwork to make us stronger.

A Glimpse into the Future of Dentistry

Having recently sold my practice to a young dentist, I have had an opportunity to get a glimpse of the possible future of dentistry, as well as the trials and tribulations of new graduates. So many of our young dentists are saddled with exorbitant student loans, which is affecting our profession in so many ways. For this reason, many are enticed to join corporate offices which can offer health care and a livable wage. The small local practices are being consumed by the corporate machine, just as we have seen big box stores take out our local grocers. This situation is, of course, happening in many areas of our economy.

I offer no answer or even what the outcome might be. Maybe it will be better in the long run?? Maybe it will morph into something better as we progress?? My fear is we as a profession will lose our autonomy and the delicate relationship and trust we have with our patients. How does this situation affect our Fraternity?? Can we have an impact? Our fraternity represents a core commitment and identity to invest in our future generation of

professional leaders!! So how can we as individuals in this organization make a difference?? Maybe mentoring a young dentist in your office without demanding high production from them?? Taking an interest in your community dental society to make sure new dentists are supported?? I welcome all of us to ponder this dilemma and seek ways to maintain and improve our ability to serve in a way that not only supports us, but keeps the profession from corporate takeover.

Fraternally,

Anne-Lise Fink, DDS Iota, ’94

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

Congratulations to Tuyet Doan, Alpha Psi Chapter, at The University of Texas Health Science Center for receiving the FOUTZ Scholarship Award for 2021

First and foremost, I want to offer my sincerest gratitude and express my excitement in receiving the 2021 Vivian and Reynold L. Foutz Scholarship for a junior student. I am both humbled and honored to be the recipient of your generous contribution. Over the past three years at the University of Texas(UT) Scholl of Dentistry in Houston, the Xi Psi Phi dental fraternity has become an integral part of my educational career. Through it all, I am very grateful for the tremendous support gained from my felloe “Zippers,” as well as advisors.

To give you some small insight into myself, I grew up is a small rural town in Quang Nam, Vietnam, with my parents and two little sisters. At the age of 15, I intensely trained and passed the entrance exam to Nguyen Binh Khiem – a highly selective high school, in which I specialized in Mathematics. In a town where education is competitive, essential medication and dental care was not-creating a form of disparity that left the poor at a disadvantage. Thus after high school, my family and I made the life changing decision of migrating to the United States in search of the American dream. Five years later, I finished my Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Houston (UH), with a minor in Chemistry. While at UH, I worked as lead technician at CVS pharmacy, and did extensive volunteer work with children and cardiac patients at Methodist and Memorial Hermann hospitals. After graduating from UH, I continued pursuing my Masters in Biomedical Science at the University of North Texas. During the program, I found great joy at working at a non-profit dental clinic the provided free service for low income patients. Soon after I started the

Congratulations to Keely Stofer, Chi Chapter, at the University of Missouri- Kansas City for receiving the FOUTZ Scholarship Award for 2022: Growing up in Hot Springs Village, AR, a large retirement community known for its many golf courses, lakes, and recreational amenities, I had no siblings, and young playmates were scarce. From the beginning I learned how to entertain myself, satisfy my curiosity, and communicate effectively with the aging adults living around me. Engaged by their life experiences, wisdom, and kindness, I learned of their triumphs and sorrows and witnessed their declining health; my heart hurt to see someone lose a spouse or loved one. Thankfully, I had parents who

dental program at the University of Texas School of dentistry in Houston, I became a member of Xi Psi Phi. I have been active with the organization, serving as class representative shortly after joining, the President for the past two consecutive years. Out side of the community I found within Xi Psi Phi, being part of the UT Dental Program was a great honor in itself-as I reflect on my background and where I came from. In 2021, I participated in a research on the effect of different vacuum systems in reducing bioaerosol and achieved the Best Poster award from the school. Now, I look forward to graduating as the top 10graduating members of the class of 2023. In the small windows of life where my passion for dentistry is all-encompassing, I am incredibly passionate about travelling. Before starting dental school, I had the opportunity to travel to Thailand, China, and back to my homeland, Vietnam. When time does not permits such travels, I also enjoy reading investment books. One of my guilty pleasures is watching Korean drama.

After graduation, I plan on working as a general dentist and soon after, open my own practice. With the education and knowledge gained from dental school, as well as Xi Psi Phi, I am excited for my future in serving the greater Houston community.

Thank you again for the wonderful honor!

Sincerely,

University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston Doctor of dental Surgery Candidate Class of 2023

instilled in me compassion, creativity, a love of learning, and a desire to be involved in the lives of others.

Meeting other children my age meant going to school twentyfive miles from home and finding youth-related activities far outside my neighborhood. Often in solitude at home, I would play doctor and dentist with my beloved pets, stuffed-animals, and doll “patients.” A little white lab coat, plastic instruments, “x-rays,” and a pretend diploma authenticated my

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

dream. I began to notice people’s teeth, and at visits with my own dentist, conversations were eased by his calming, encouraging demeanor; I wanted to be like him. I was more curious about his denture displays and tooth posters than about his office “toy chest.” Later, when I acquired braces, my desire to learn about dental health increased, as did my curiosity about my orthodontist’s own journey. To my surprise, my orthodontist, Dr. Adam Hall, grew up in my same retirement community, experienced the aging demographic that I did, also graduated highest in his class, and even worked at the same golf course pro-shop where I worked; these similarities further encouraged me. I wanted to be a dentist; this passion not only has framed my personality but has driven me towards a responsible and productive professional career goal.

Preparing for dental school, I eagerly shadowed several dentists. Dr. Raines knows that retirees are on a fixed income, and many do not have dental insurance. His altruism is evident in conversations with his patients: explaining pathology and procedures and offering guidance and cost-effective options. Dr. Teale’s contagious humor puts his patients and coworkers at ease and relieves stress. I admire them both and see these qualities in myself.

In 2017, it was my mother’s dentist, Dr. DeLee, who questioned her health during a routine periodic examination. He noticed the severe erosion on the back of her maxillary central incisors and opened a dialogue. They conversed about her recent acid-reflux, extreme weight loss, and gastric distress. Dr. DeLee urged her to consult with a competent doctor, which she did immediately. Unexpectedly, the diagnosis at Baylor Hospital in Dallas revealed that she had a life-threatening blockage of the Pylorus Valve. The next morning she had major gastrointestinal surgery, followed by a lengthy recovery. I credit her dentist, Dr. DeLee, for helping save her life. That’s the kind of dentist I want to be; the kind who helps save lives.

Prior to dental school I graduated from Lake Hamilton High School as Highest Honors (Valedictorian), I was AllState oboist, drum major for the Powerband of Arkansas (a Bands of America competitor), State Optimist Oratorical recipient, and officer for Student Council, to name a few. Attending Southern Arkansas University on a full tuition/board scholarship, I studied science and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Some memorable activities include serving as a Student Instructor for a Genetics course, being principal oboist for the university symphony, speaking at the Veterans’ Day Commemoration, and forming a few life-long friendships.

Being accepted into the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry made a childhood dream come

true. While the arduous schedule of dental school can be daunting, I have found time to participate as an oboist for the Kansas City Medical Arts Symphony and serve on various organizational committees: ASDA, Student Council, and AWD. Serving as the ASDA District 8 Outreach Chair for the past two years has allowed me to attend conferences and coordinate district-wide service events with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s Charitable Foundation, Give Back A Smile, not only to raise monetary funds, but also awareness of the organization’s charitable causes.

Xi Psi Phi has given me wonderful opportunities for service and long-lasting friendships. I am grateful for the experiences in the ZIPS Fraternity by providing time to help others know the importance of oral health and serving to raise funds for those individuals who are not always financially-able to cover the costs of treatments. “To give a smile” may be a trite saying to some, but for me, it puts me much closer to fulfilling the reality of that little girl’s dream. As my mom preached, “It is not only about you, but what you can do for others.” I want to be a dentist, in part, because so many people would like to smile but don’t; I want to give them a desire to maintain good oral health and encourage them to live optimistically. Humbly, I am honored to receive this Xi Psi Phi Reynold L. and Vivian Foutz Scholarship and thank the organization for its confidence in me to continue my journey. The financial award will be used wisely in helping me reach my destination.

There are many who begin life much less fortunate than I and who struggle to overcome serious hardships. Relatively speaking, my story is not remarkable for overcoming misfortunes. What is notable in my story is that I have seized every opportunity available to help me establish a career that will best serve others. I worked diligently to succeed academically with highest honors; to be a friend to people of all ages; to become a professional musician, teaching others the oboe and learn to handcraft reeds; and to develop a skill for oratory and public speaking. Dentistry will be my chosen profession at home in the United States and through medical mission trips to underserved areas. Having traveled to thirteen countries, I value getting to know people in different cultures. I believe “to whom much is given, much is expected.” Improving the quality of life for others and the less fortunate guides my character, for “it is better to give than to receive.” I intend to make a difference as a health-care provider for all people, young or old, in any community, large or small, who need a dedicated, compassionate, personable, and skilled dental professional.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

Congratulations to Samantha Pease, Beta Chapter, at New York University College of Dentistry for receiving the FOUTZ Scholarship Award for 2023:

Thank you very much for the incredible honor of being chosen as the recipient of the Vivian and Reynold L. Foutz Scholarship for Junior dental students. As an original member of the Xi Psi Phi dental fraternity at New York University College of Dentistry that was re-founded this past year, I look forward to the lifelong friendships and support from my fellow Zips.

To tell you a little bit about myself, I grew up in Whiting, NJ with my mother (Karene), and sisters. After earning my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University, I embarked on a journey of diverse professional experiences before ultimately transitioning to dentistry. Beginning as a paralegal, I later pursued further academic endeavors while also enjoying my role as a bartender. Meanwhile, my twin sister, Taylor, pursued a degree in Finance at East Carolina University and is now a Senior Financial Analyst in NYC.

Throughout my upbringing and during my undergraduate years, I balanced my academic pursuits with extracurricular activities such as high school lacrosse, volunteering for the Walk for Multiple Sclerosis Foundation annually, Red Cross Blood Drive events, and of course, soaking up the sun at the beach.

Amidst my pursuit of advanced education after Penn State, my family and I also devoted time to volunteering with a local non-profit animal rescue, Wag On Inn, where my aunt has long been involved. We fostered numerous dogs for the rescue, facilitating their adoption into loving homes. Among them, a special puppy from North Carolina captured our hearts—Jada, a delightful Labrador and Great Dane mix, who has brought immeasurable joy and warmth into our lives. Through our involvement in fostering and adoption, we have witnessed firsthand the profound impact of rescue work, reinforcing our dedication to offering animals like Jada a chance at a brighter future in a loving home.

My family has been instrumental in shaping both my character and my educational journey. My uncle, who is a dentist in NJ, has had a massive impact on my journey into dentistry. I had the privilege of shadowing him countless times during undergrad and even worked alongside him as his assistant before starting dental school at NYU. His guidance, experience, and mentorship have been invaluable as I pursue my dream of becoming a dentist.

Upon graduation from the New York University College of Dentistry, my intention is to return to NJ to practice general dentistry. Once again, I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity afforded to me and deeply appreciate this esteemed honor.

Sincerely,

The UTHSC chapter of Xi Psi Phi (ZIPs) continues to expand with the growth of our college, and we are more excited than ever for the opportunities we provide for our members! The ZIPs Executive Council kicks-oH the new school year with a Rush Week for the first-year students, but all students are always welcome to join the chapter at any point in the school year. A popular Rush Week event is the Annual Flip Cup tournament with teams of 5 competing for the fame and glory! The perfect social mixer for first-year

students to meet their classmates and learn more from upperclassmen about what dental school and ZIPs has to offer. Throughout the year, the chapter hosts multiple events ranging from intramural sports tournaments to formals. Pickleball has taken on the world by storm, and it did not miss UTHSC! ZIPs members bring out their competitiveness during our pickleball tournaments, and they are encouraged to participate in other intramural leagues offered by the campus. The chapter also organizes two formals a year which gives students a chance to dress up outside of their scrubs and catch up with students from different classes. We love seeing members in their best dress and meeting their significant others to learn more about their lives!

To wrap up the year, members are invited to participate in ZIPs Idol where anyone who is musically

inclined has the opportunity to perform a set in front of their peers. The event attracts dental students, hygiene students, and even faculty members. This year we have been making an effort to reach out to the dental hygiene program and create friendships as that will be a skill needed in practice in the near future. ZIPs idol was extra special this year as every class had a band perform, including a special performance by the Dentones! They are a well-known UTHSC band made up of the current dean and other faculty members. The event promotes a sense of community by encouraging our mentors and peers to share their talents and enjoy each other’s company outside of a school setting!

The UTHSC Executive Council has been honored to continue the legacy of ZIPs on campus, and we have high hopes for the future of the organization!

GREETINGS XI PSI PHI, Ihope the day is treating you well and I am sure you are all looking forward to the Supreme Chapter meeting. I wanted to give you an update on where our recently revived Beta Chapter, at NYU, stands at the current moment.

We just finished inducting our newest group of pledges and welcomed 58 new members into the fraternity (56 students and 2 faculty). This took our overall active member count from 23 to 81!

A big jump considering at this same point in time, one year ago, we only had myself and our faculty advisor, Dr. Vernice. Going from 2 to 81 in less than a year is great for Xi Psi Phi and we have really put ZIPS back on the playing field here at NYU.

The officers and I are are hard at work planning our future activities. We are looking forward to a summer of events covering academics, outreach, and the social aspects of fraternity life. We are also excited to begin recruiting our next pledge class and we are hoping our numbers can continue to grow exponentially. I have had doctors who were ZIPS in dental school already approaching me asking to be involved. Masses of students are already eager to join after hearing about ZIPS from their newly inducted friends. We are looking forward to another great rush again in the fall semester and we have already seen a positive response!

Our new members are a great group of people and they are wonderful additions to our community.

students, faculty, and alumni. They allow members a chance to interact with each other outside the walls

school. Some of these events can be closed off to just ZIPS, while others are open to the entire school.

Xi Psi Phi has hosted gatherings of over one hundred people and is excited to grow even more.

I want to thank you all for your support in getting all of this going again. It has been a long but fruitful journey.

A special thank you to Dr. Tim Regan for being our main source of guidance on re-establishing Beta Chapter. A second special thank you to Dr. Nicholas Vernice for being a wonderful faculty advisor. A third special thank you to Drs. Dorreen Amen, Fabio Apolito, Keith Fisher, Mike Singer, Peter Babick, Kevin Grant, Tom Hoeg, Chris Olynik and all the other alumni who frequent our events. A fourth and final thank you to our wonderful Beta Chapter Officers: Peter Dibbini, Yousef Altatan, Taylor Yaeger, Kathryn Kaloroumakis, Lauren LaPorta, Cindy Do, Justin Frankel, Ronni Lipnitsky, Marcel Isper, and Dennis Kellerman. Everyone I have listed has been instrumental in helping the reformation of Beta Chapter.

FUTURE PLANS

Now that Beta Chapter has grown to a sizeable number, we are looking forward to larger and more consistent events. New members are already getting involved in plans for academic events, outreach outings, and of course, more socials. With a new class of first years entering NYU’s halls in the coming months, Beta Chapter is more ready than ever to host more events and grow the Xi Psi Phi Brotherhood!

Please have a wonderful day and I look forward to continued success for Xi Psi Phi!

Xi Psi Phi Iota Chapter has had a busy second half of the school year. January was an eventful time as we planned our Winter Speaker Dinner and had our annual Tahoe trip! We had 40 people come and stay at a beautiful house that hosts us every year. Many people enjoyed snow-related activities: snowboarding, skiing, sledding, and snowball fights! When people weren’t enjoying the snow, we played board games, relaxed in the hot tub, and watched movies. Our VP, Michelle Guo, did a fantastic job of making sure the weekend ran smoothly! We had our Winter Speaker Dinner in February and welcomed Dr. Darren Chun and Dr. Ballan Tuck to give us their insight on laser dentistry and postgraduation plans. Dr. Chun provided Xi Psi Phi mugs for all the participants, and our board provided the attendees cookies with custom Xi Psi Phi stickers. It was great seeing everyone in a more relaxed setting and getting some insider knowledge from our speakers. Our chapter was also able to hold a few volunteering events, which have not happened since COVID. We wanted to bring back one of the things our chapter was known for at UCSF: being a service frat! Our philanthropy chair, Adonia, held a beach clean-up in March where we joined The Surfrider Foundation. We had a lot of fun getting to know each other while making the beach cleaner one wrapper at a time. Our second volunteering event was at San Francisco Botanical Gardens, but unfortunately, we had to cancel due to weather. We’ll try again next year! We will be ending the year

Annual Ski Trip

with our Spring Senior Farewell Dinner in a couple weeks, where we will be saying farewell to our seniors and

inducting our new board! Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you at our next Quarterly submission in December!

DENTAL FRATERNITY: A YEAR OF SUCCESS

Throughout the academic year, the Omicron Chapter of Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity has exemplified excellence in both academics and social engagement, leaving an indelible mark on its members.

In January, the chapter kicked off the year with a resounding success, hosting their annual formal event at the prestigious Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex. With a staggering attendance of 320 people, the evening was a testament to the fraternity’s ability to organize memorable gatherings. Attendees were treated to a sumptuous three-course dinner, electrifying beats from a live DJ, and

generous gifts from esteemed sponsors, including a coveted seven-day trip to Florida. Sponsors such as dentalcorp, Crest, A.T. Financial, M&Co. Accounting, and Santoro Financial lent their support, underscoring the fraternity’s strong industry connections.

February proved equally eventful, with Xi Psi Phi demonstrating its commitment to Member’s professional development. Collaborating with RoiCorp, the fraternity organized a Business in Dentistry Webinar, providing invaluable insights into practice acquisition. Crest’s support enriched the webinar experience, with some attendees receiving water flossers as part of their participation. Additionally, a partnership with PrepDoctors facilitated a discounted board examination preparation course, equipping graduating students with essential resources for success on the NDEB Virtual OSCE.

March saw the fraternity delve into crucial topics with an accounting seminar, courtesy of M&Co. Accounting. Graduating dentists gained insights into financial matters pivotal to their future careers.

Looking ahead, Xi Psi Phi has ambitious plans to further enrich the academic and social fabric of its community. With two upcoming events – a school-wide end-of-year social and a celebratory barbecue for the graduating class – the fraternity remains dedicated to fostering camaraderie and academic excellence.

In reflection, the Omicron Chapter of Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity celebrates a year marked by academic achievements and vibrant social engagement. Grateful for the support of its members and sponsors, the Omicron Chapter pledges to uphold its legacy of excellence, making Xi Psi Phi fraternity proud.
