Dear Fellow Zips, ince my installation as Supreme Chapter President, we have enjoyed many successes including a new class of dental school graduates, the installation of new Chapter officers, the reactivation of Alpha Psi Chapter at Houston and the Zip Hospitality Reception at the ADA Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. This year we will be celebrating our 130th Anniversary and conducting our annual Supreme Chapter Board Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Congratulations to the graduating Class of 2018. I wish you great success as a new dentist as you embark on a great career. Some have chosen to further their educational endeavors (post-graduate programs, military service) while others have chosen to pursue private practice. I know most graduates are leaving their dental school with significant financial obligations. Along with other dental organizations, I hope you will continue your active membership in the fraternity. Thank you to the new Chapter Officers. In addition to leading your Chapter, I hope you are having the best year in your Chapter. Reach out to the Supreme Chapter for help with any difficulties you may encounter. The Supreme Chapter has resources that may help with your planned activities. Our website (www.xipsiphi.org) has information that may be beneficial as you plan your agenda for the year.
Welcome back Alpha Psi Chapter. We have additional Chapters including Alpha Epsilon (Oregon), Beta Zeta (New Jersey), Beta Alpha (Washington) & Beta Xi (Arizona) that are inactive. Whether you are a postgraduate student attending a program or an active/retired dentist in an area near an inactive Chapter, you could Dr. Randy P. Gurrola help to reactivate a Chapter by volunteering to be a Chapter Advisor. The Supreme Chapter will help you with the reactivation. Re-activation of Alpha Psi Chapter
I
t is with great pleasure that Xi Psi Phi Fraternity welcomes the re-activation of the Alpha Psi Chapter at University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston. A re-charter/initiation/friendship degree ceremony was held on November 10, 2018 at Carraba’s Restaurant. The original charter was presented in 1932 and closed in 1985, so it was with great excitement we presented the students with the new charter. Zayd Najjar and Ashley Lindley initiated the search for a dental organization that focused on serving their community, as well as offering a home away from home for the dental students, and found the Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity fit their goals. Soon they had engaged a group of students, Rehan Shahid, Melissa Wong, Yuhong Lin, Nadiah Malik, Salem Hadgu, Andrew Mai, Amira Haidar, Destin Nguon, Rohail Momin, Talal Beidas, Ian Castell, Afreen Ansari, Mohammad Albaba, Kimberly Heaton, Patricia Nuñez, Temilola Joseph, Miriam Ohakam,

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Reynold L. and Vivian Foutz Scholarship Award Recipient 2018 Nima Khosraviani Omicron Chapter University of Toronto Toronto, Ontario, Canada I was born and raised in Pickering, Ontario, and have had many positive role models in my family who worked in various health care professions, notably my father and aunt who are both dentists. I graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor’s of Life Science and got accepted to the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry. Dental school can definitely be stressful, tiring, and feel repetitive with the countless hours of class, clinic, and studying, but for the past 3 years ZIP has felt like home both literally and metaphorically. I got the opportunity to live in the ZIP house since my first year and have been involved on the ZIP council as an academic rep, a social rep and finally the President elect for next year. Aside from ZIP, I also play Ultimate Frisbee for the Dentistry intramural team, take part in community events like the high school mentorship program, and am a class council representative for our annual dental school variety show called “Dentantics,” which is put together by the student body. My biggest hobby has been music; have played Piano since the age of six, and since then I have tried to learn any instrument I can get my hands on; trombone, guitar and bass. Currently I perform in the pit band for “Dentantics,” and at open mics in Toronto. I also really enjoy fitness, getting outdoors, and cycling. My future aspirations are to learn as much as I can with the remaining time I have at school, and begin associating in the GTA upon graduating. I hope one day I will be able to have my own dental practice, and continuously learn and grow in my profession. I want to thank the Xsi Psi Phi supreme chapter and Xsi Psi Phi foundation scholarship committee for providing me with this award. This scholarship will help me greatly with my school expenses as I finish my DDS degree, and I am very thankful to have been selected.

Charlie A. Reagan Scholarship Recipient 2018 Tim Johnson Beta Mu Chapter Southern Illinois University Alton, Illinois My name is Tim Johnson and I was born and raised in South Beloit, Illinois. I hail from a family of predominantly skilled tradesmen and law enforcement officers. I decided to take a different route, which my wonderful parents afforded me the opportunity to attend Augustana College, where I received my Bachelors of Arts in Biology along with an Art minor. Some of my greatest undergraduate accomplishments were; traveling to Nicaragua for a two week medical mission trip, interning for ten weeks in Sydney Australia and being actively involved in my fraternity Omicron Sigma Omicron. After graduating with honors from Augustana, I knew that I wanted to be actively involved with an Organization on Southern Illinois University, School of Dental Medicine. After being greeted by many of the Xi Psi Phi members I knew this was the organization that I wanted to be a part of and hopefully make a difference with. I once heard the saying, “The fraternity doesn’t make you, you make the fraternity.” So I made it my goal to make Xi Psi Phi a little better of a organization from when I first joined. I hope to continue to make Xi Psi Phi proud as I continue my studies as a dental student and further on as a soon to be a graduate. With graduation approaching I have accepted a position at a large, up and coming practice in Georgetown, Texas.

i Psi Phi Dental Fraternity hosted a hospitality reception at The ADA Meeting on October 19, 2018 in Hawaii. It was a pleasure to welcome students, alumni and friends to gather and share our friendships.
I retired from full-time teaching at Oregon Health & Science University on July 1, 2018. I have stayed on parttime to teach in the ortho clinic on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons (8 hours each week). No more 8 AM classes or meetings. It’s great. Gail and I can take off when we want to. Just need to let the new department chair and program director know in advance so we can be sure the clinic is covered. For me, it is a good way to retire and still be involved with the ortho grad students, dental students, and clinic patients (which I enjoy). Gail and I just got back from spending two weeks in our time-share condominium on Maui, Hawaii. Now getting ready to entertain family and friends over the holidays.

Congratulations to the Class of 2018!!!! The annual Iota Chapter Senior Farewell Dinner was held at Marine’s Memorial Hotel in San Francisco on June 1, 2018. Our chapter president Annie Hsu welcomed all the students and alumni to this amazing celebration. The ZIPS alumni Faculty award was presented to Dr. Frederick Finzen Iota ’78, as well as the non Zip Faculty award was presented to Dr. Mark Dellinges. Both Dr. Finzen and Dr. Dellinges are incredible instructors and are very much valued by the students. Following dinner the Iota Alumni board handed out scholarships to deserving students who significantly contributed to the Iota chapter. Rachel Forer, who is this year’s winner of the Charlie A. Reagan Scholarship award,was presented with her plaque. This year’s seniors came up and received their rose and alumni pin and shared what their plans were for the coming year. This year seniors include Ava Arshadi, Meghrik Assadourian, Daniel Belay, Jasselle Cubugao, Irene Ching, Alessandra Dieplinger, Ethan Do, Rachel Forer, Talin Golnazatian, Kyle Hellstrom, Melody Khonsari, Liza Luchkovska, Ryan Mak, Zohreh Marashi, Phillip Nam, Catherine Nguyen, Steven Pan, Anastasia Pogadajeva, Tabasom Rafi, Byron Ruiz, Jessica St. Martin, Valoren Tinaj and Emily Zheng. The new 2018–2019 Iota board members were sworn in and are on their way to making the coming year another outstanding year for the ZIPS!! The evening ended with the new president, Allison Jan congratulating the seniors and thanking all the members and alumni for their friendship and support. GO ZIPS!!!

ALPHA OMICRON CHAPTER University of Tennessee Health Science Center Memphis, TN—Founded 1921 A THRIVING FALL SEMESTER
W
e started off the 2018 fall semester at full force. To get the ball rolling, social chair Archer Hodges began by planning and inviting the Class of 2022 to the rush week activities. On Monday night of rush week we hosted a ‘Meet & Greet’ at a well-known Memphis brewery, Wiseacre, with our current executive members and ZIP members so the new class had a chance to meet and learn more about our chapter. Wednesday night, which is the night that everyone looks forward to, was the annual ZIPs Cocktail Party. This year the event was held
at a new venue, Brickwood Hall, that exceeded all expectations considering the venue is owned by a UTHSC College of Dentistry alumnus. It was an exceptional night full of mingling and celebrating the kick off of a new year with nearly 250 attendees! Then, Friday night was the annual ZIP Flip Cup Tournament. The games this night got competitive, but the D2’s took home the victory. Overall, it was a great week getting to know and help guide the potential new members. They were able to see first and fore-most that Xi Psi Phi values friendship and morality, even if we sometimes get a little competitive, it is only because we hold ourselves to high standards in both our everyday lives and profession. Following rush week, our faculty sponsor Dr. Stan Covington strongly encouraged the new students to

consider joining our fraternity. He stated, “Being in a professional fraternity provides a wonderful outlet to have fun, let off some steam, and share in the highs and lows that inevitably come with professional school. There will be times when you will ask for help, and times when you will provide it.” Shortly after, we happily got to initiate 38 new members into the Alpha Omicron chapter, including our newest Dean of UTHSC CoD, Dr. James C. Ragain. Not only are we thrilled to have Dean Ragain as a member of our chapter, but we are very fortunate to have to other ZIP members at our school as some of the best leaders with top positions such as: Dr. Covington, Dr. DeSchepper, Dr. Weeda, Dr. Christian, Dr. Colvert, Dr. Smith, and Dr. Schmidt. This year we took a new approach at initiation to instill all the foundations of Xi Psi Phi into our new members. For the first time in some years, we are advancing towards once again incorporating ritual into initiation. President Yesha Banaji and VP Corey Acosta took hold of the reigns on this with some guidance from Dr. Covington. In the end, the new initiates understood all of Xi Psi Phi’s morals and delightedly took the oath. To continue our chapter’s post-initiation tradition, the night ended by ZIP members meeting the new initiates

at Earnestine & Hazels for a night of entertainment, drinks, and soul burgers. There have also been many other events, fundraisers, and works-inprogress happening this semester for our chapter. Another small event we held was the ZIPs cornhole tournament. Hosted at philanthropy chair Justin Cooper’s house, we allowed all students of our college to sign up teams to compete. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon gathering to play some games and watch plenty of college football. Our chosen fundraiser for this semester was selling embroidered quarter-zip sweatshirts. The fundraiser was mediated by secretary Britta Ristau, fundraising Chair Tom Butler, and treasurer Kristiana Tenorio. We were able to sell over 200 sweatshirts, and they were such a big hit there has been talk about opening another order at the beginning of the new year! Last but not least, we have finally kick-started our alumni reach-out program this semester. It has been a dream of our president’s since she first got involved with the executive council. Our VP and fundraising chair first put together a small newsletter with a few words from Dr. Covington incorporated. Then, they obtained a list of over 800 alumni from our chapter as well as their
addresses. With a big group effort, our council stuffed and stamped envelopes for all of them to get them ready to send out. For the alumni that are located around the Memphis area our council worked in pairs to hand deliver the newsletters to them, and then the others were mailed. Our intentions for this program are to get more alumni involved in our activities that we host throughout the year, and hopefully in the near future we can host a yearly alumni dinner for everyone to get back together. We really want to the follow through with the long-lasting friendships that this fraternity allows us to develop. Also, within the newsletter, recipients had the opportunity to sign-up for our emailing list so we will better be able to keep them in the loop, send them quarterly newsletters, or so they could make donations if they choose to do so. We are very excited and thankful for the opportunities that we have had to grow our chapter this semester. It has taken a lot of time, meetings, and effort from our council members and active chapter members to make such big changes and stride towards new goals. ALPHA PSI CHAPTER University of Texas School of Dentistry, Houston Branch Houston, Texas—Founded 1932 and Reactivated 2018
T
he University of Texas School of Dentistry Houston branch has started a new chapter of Xi Psi Phi. This organization fills a needed niche in the school for a fraternity that emphasizes community service. The dental students of Xi Psi Phi are committed to reaching underserved populations and applying the concepts they learned in the classroom such as prevention to outside the school. Led by second year student Zayd Najjar, the chapter has already had an eventful first semester with its first volunteer event at a homeless shelter and its initiation ceremony for new students into the fraternity. Colgate generously donated 600 toothbrushes and 1,200 toothpastes, which were then later put into packages. On October 6th, members gave out hand- written notes and care packages to homeless people at the Beacon, a shelter in Houston. The club members personally delivered these items to the homeless people in order to facilitate conversations about oral hygiene and preventative techniques. There were so many packages that Xi Psi Phi had enough to distribute to another nearby shelter, Loaves and Fishes. A month later, on November 10th, the club held its initiation ceremony in which alumni of the fraternity from the dental school as well as from the overriding National organization attended. It was a special ceremony where students pledged themselves to the fraternity and received certificates of membership. In addition, fraternity alumni had the opportunity reminisce about what the fraternity used to be like and share their experiences with the new members. This fraternity hopes to continue the momentum it has built this semester

owdy from Dallas! Summer and Fall of 2018 have been filled with lots of fun, adventure and service for ZIPS at Texas A&M College of Dentistry. We transitioned into the summer with a whole new set of promising officers and members! We kicked the summer semester off with our Pub Golf event to get to know the new members of ZIPS. Right around the corner, we held our annual Fourth of July schoolwide pool party, which also doubled as a philanthropy event. Non-ZIPS

Towards the end of summer, numerous ZIPS members traveled to Jamaica or Zambia on dental mission trips to serve the community. A large group of D3 and D4 students visited Jamaica where they served over 500 patients in four days. Our D4 members were great mentors for our D3s offering advice, encouragement and guidance as they transitioned their clinical skills from lab to clinic. Another group of four D4 members traveled to Zambia where they served around 200 patients in four days. After a busy summer semester and much needed break, our members were ready to tackle the fall semester!

The Fall semester was finally here and we were excited to meet the new incoming D1 class! ZIPS began the new school year with our annual tackle box fundraiser for the D1 students. The boxes were filled with various helpful materials the D1s would need in their upcoming year. Not only did we provide the boxes, but it’s also a tradition that members of our chapter help each D1 organize their materials and lab bench while offering them advice. It’s an amazing opportunity to pay it forward and provide for the D1s in the same way ZIPS members and now alumni did for us as incoming D1s. Additionally, at the end of the first week of school, ZIPS hosted our annual “Back to School Bash” to welcome the D1s as well as the entire school back to Dallas for our 2018–2019 school year. It was a great opportunity to get to know the D1s further and to reunite with our fellow classmates after summer break. We continued the semester with numerous officer meetings to plan the year’s upcoming events, philanthropy opportunities, and fundraisers. Each year, the three dental fraternities at Texas A&M College of Dentistry co-host the annual TriFrat Halloween Party for the entire school. Everyone pulled out their best

costumes and had a great time. At the end of October, we volunteered at the Soup Mobile where we prepared food for the homeless in the Dallas area. In November, we had the opportunity to spend a Saturday providing free dental care to those in need in the Dallas community at Mission Arlington. We had faculty ZIPS alumni join us at the community clinic to help, and it was a blast giving back to the people of our great city. We rounded off November with our new tradition of attending a Dallas Stars hockey game and our ZIPSgiving party, where members gathered and brought their favorite Thanksgiving dish! Unfortunately, the Stars lost but we had a blast rooting them on with our fellow Alpha Pi chapter members. In conjunction with other organizations at the school, we participated
in numerous events such as ASDA’s annual Legislative Kickoff where we educated our students on the importance of advocating for our profession and the school’s toy drive for the Community Partners of Dallas. We finished off the semester with one last event, our Tacky Christmas Sweater Party, to celebrate the holiday season as well as the end of another tough yet rewarding semester. This year thus far has been filled with charitable work, new experiences, lasting memories and a lot of fun. We can’t wait for what Spring has in store for us. Thanks for catching up with us! his semester, the ZIPS Beta Chapter at the NYU College of Dentistry has upheld our values of service, leadership, and especially friendship through a variety of social events, academic events, and volunteer opportunities. In addition, we have designed and produced t-shirts (pictured) to increase awareness of ZIPS and our impeccable sense of fashion! We continued our tradition of community service through volunteering in Queens, NY to provide free dental screenings and vouchers for exams and cleanings to underserved populations. In addition, our members volunteered at the NYU College of Dentistry Saturday Academy, which is an opportunity for underrepresented high school students to gain experience in health care fields and receive help on their college applications. We also helped our own school community by hosting a D2 success panel to help our colleagues get through one of the most challenging years of dental school. Not to mention, we held social events including outdoor potluck gatherings and a paintball night to further bond with each other and create memories

that will last a lifetime. Not pictured, we held tutorials for D1 and D2 students in their preclinical courses and held a fundraiser by selling beautiful tackle boxes so students can carry their lab supplies around in style.

he fall semester was as exciting as the spring for the Beta Mu chapter Zips at Southern Illinois University! The semester kicked off with our rush luncheon and party event. Our theme this year was Xi “Sci-Fi,” a space themed, out of this world experience. The events went off without a glitch and we happily welcome 17 new members into our chapter. We continued our semester with our annual fall golf scramble— ZIP OPEN; thanks to Drs Dickey and Fischer for grilling the hamburgers and hot dogs. It was a great way to get all new members involved and excited about the comradery of our group. Next up was our canned food drive to benefit the Cougar Pantry at

ver the course of this semester, Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine’s Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity has been hosting dinner and learn presentations. At these events, we invite an array of guest speakers from the dental community to share their insight about their journey in dentistry. They also include various case presentations allowing students to integrate what they learned from the talk and apply it to different clinical scenarios. During the past dinner and learn, we were honored to have Dr. Alex Rubinov, a well-known cosmetic dentist in New York City. This individual graduated from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and has directed his focuses toward cosmetic dentistry. He discussed his idea of a “Smile Makeover” where patients can actually see firsthand how their smile could transform during a consultation visit. Dr. Rubinov was able to effectively convey this to the patient through the use of flowable composite. His patients were able to see how their smile could be transformed in that visit alone leading to a greater patient case acceptance as well as patient satisfaction.
Beyond this, two of our chapter members, Cyril Manchery and Jason Chen were able to further work with Dr. Rubinov at the Hamptons for a bleaching event he was hosting for the community. During this event, our members were able to assist and learn how to properly use Opalescence Boost to whiten teeth. In the coming weeks, our chapter will be hosting another dinner and learn with Dr. Lewis Chen along with our annual Ugly Christmas Sweater event where students and residents can come together in the spirit of the holidays. eta Omicron Chapter has had quite the busy year! As our 2nd official year at Midwestern University in Chicago, IL, we kicked off the new school year with members volunteering at Illinois’ Mission of Mercy in Springfield, IL this past July 2018. After a long week of clinic and a 4 hour drive down south, our members were certainly busy serving those in need in the communities and definitely had fun doing so. Come October 2018, ZIPs participated in Shiloh Church Dental Outreach to serve local communities of South Side Chicago. Thanks Shayan Nizami for organizing such great volunteering events for our members! During our break in August 2018, Beta Omicron Chapter hosted its very first Mission Trip to Peru! Organized and led by our then-Vice President Franco Enverga, members were left with unforgettable experiences volunteering with A Broader View. At our Thanksgiving Break 2018, we had our second Mission Trip to Belize! Coordinated and led by Dr. Charles Arita of Iota Chapter, a few Beta Omicron members had

From hosting our popular BBQ Social and Canned Food Drive to volunteering with Feed My Starving Children in Aurora, IL and finally hosting our Initiation Ceremony on October 24, 2018, Beta Omicron’s chapter grew to a super family of 48 members! One of our new initiates, Jamie Childers, even made Beta Omicron its official paddle. Thank you, man! At this time, Beta Omicron is a thriving family in the coldest of winters in Chicago, Illinois. n November 16, the Iota Chapter of Xi Psi Phi at the University of California, San Francisco had its annual Fall Quarter Initiation Dinner, featuring over 100 ZIPS members and guests.
The dinner was a spectacular night filled with formal and friendly fun. To begin, attending alumni were formally recognized by the chapter and the ZIPS president gave her remarks. Afterward, attendees of the annual ZIPS Jamaica Mission Trip presented a video highlighting the event and spoke on their experience, showcasing the fraternity’s commitment to dental service. he 2018 Fall semester at Omicron Chapter was certainly one to remember! Earlier in the year, our beloved fraternity house (also known as the “ZIP House”) was hit with major flooding due to a burst pipe. This impacted not only the 10 dental students that call the ZIP house their home, but all ZIP-ers as the house is the venue of choice for many of our highly anticipated social events. Fortunately, the house was restored to its full glory with some exciting

Toronto while being introduced to upper year students. The D1’s must have liked what they saw as this year, we were proud to welcome 77 new initiates into ZIP at the Annual Initiation Event. At the Initiation Event, new members were taught about the fraternity’s origins and history and were welcomed by current members. Omicron Chapter kicked things into high gear academically with some very helpful academic sessions hosted by ZIP members. The D2’s hosted a Dental Anatomy mock bell ringer for the D1’s first test of the school year, along with a Biomaterials review session. The D3’s hosted an “Intro to Clinic” session to help the D2’s as they transition into clinics. Finally, the D4’s held a “Clinic Orientation” session to help the D3’s navigate through the school’s patient management system. Our chapter also began one of the many sessions planned to assist ZIP-ers preparing for life after dental school. We partnered up with a local Insurance company to give a brief presentation and to answer questions relating to insurance, wealth management and

preparing for associateships or practise ownership. Finally, before a busy month of November midterms, the Omicron chapter hosted our epic annual Halloween Party at the ZIP House. Current members and Xi Psi Phi alumni gathered to mingle, relax and get creative with costumes! With the year winding to a close, the Omicron chapter is grateful for another successful semester at the University of Toronto! In 1889 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, five freshmen decided to form a fraternity to place their “friendship on a more firm and lasting basis.” Since that time our numbers have grown to more than 20,000 and ZIPs are represented on 18 campuses in the United States and Canada. We truly are an International Professional Fraternity.
