T

Good Afternoon Fellow ZIP Family Members & Friends: oday, I start a journey that I never dreamed about but am eager to accept, the humbling task of Supreme Chapter President 2018–2020. First, I would like to congratulate Dr. Apolito on a successful two years. As a friend of mine would say, “Don’t let the ship sink under your helm.” Although the ship was hit by occasional rocky waters, I assume the wheel of a vessel ready for the next voyage. Let’s go back to the year 1985, before some of those in attendance were born. That was the year I started dental school at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). I, like many first year students did not know what was going to happen over the next 4 years. What we did know that first week was the dental fraternities (ZIPS, Psi-O & Delts) were going to feed us as they tried to get us to join their local chapters. I did not join that first year but was good friends with classmates from each fraternity. During my 2nd year, I and two classmates/ roommates moved in together and we all rushed ZIPS. It seems like yesterday that I remember going on a Treasure Hunt as part of our initiation ritual. We, the class of 1989, were around 30 members strong. My senior year, I was elected Iota Chapter President and convinced one of classmates/roommates to be VP. This was a special year as we celebrated the 100 year anniversary of ZIPS. We held a celebration at our original ZIP House and if I remember correctly, Dr. Jerome Strain, class of 1929, attended. Having alumni attend our event celebrations/ dinners were always special as they regaled us with their past ZIP experiences. After graduating dental school, I did not leave UCSF as I completed their AEGD program and post-graduate periodontal program. Since I was on campus those three years, I was able to attend the various fraternity functions. After completing my periodontal training, I joined UCSF as an Assistant Clinical Professor. Again, staying local, I was able to keep in touch with the students and Iota Chapter events. Then, one day, I received a phone call from Dr. Stan Lawrence, the Iota Alumni Chapter President. He asked if I was interested in taking over his position. Again, I was humbled by his offer and graciously accepted. At the same time, Dr. Don Martin, Iota Alumni

Chapter Secretary/Treasurer asked Dr. Penni Yip to takes his position. We then completed the team by adding Dr. Charlie Arita, Alumni VP and Dr. Anne-Lise Fink, Alumni Editor. We then started the journey of helping to rebuild an Iota Chapter that dwindled to less than 20 members and a fraternity house that needed much Dr. Randy P. Gurrola work. The Iota Chapter continues to have great student leaders as the chapter continues to hover around 125. The ZIP House has undergone many repairs under the leadership of our Honorary Member, Mr. Fred Endemann. Even with outrageous housing prices in San Francisco, we are able to offer the students monthly rents between $600$700 vs current San Francisco housing rents of $2,500/ mos. and up. Dr. Yip became very active in the Supreme Chapter and expressed one day that the Supreme Chapter needed financial assistance. Since I had not been to a Supreme Chapter Meeting, before we (Iota Alumni Chapter) considered any financial help, I wanted to know more about the organization. I attended the meeting in San Antonio (outgoing President Troy Jones/incoming President Larry Doyle – 2004?). I was greeted warmly and was impressed by the commitment those in attendance showed toward the fraternity. Now 14 years later, many of those individuals are in attendance today which shows their loyalty to the fraternity. However, like other organizations that I am an active member, we need as I like to say “new blood” to continue the tradition of this great fraternity. As I say to each graduating class at our Senior Farewell Dinner, you are welcome to attend Iota Chapter dinners for life at no charge. But, also remember the Supreme Chapter by paying your yearly membership dues and if possible, give back financially. As I say to people all the time, I try to do my best. At our last Senior Farewell Dinner, a young gentleman approached me and thanked me for my speech to the

very two years Xi Psi Phi holds a Supreme Assembly to bring together student and alumni members from all the chapters to discuss and share experiences. This is an opportunity for students to meet members of the Supreme chapter as well as other chapter officers and students from around the country. Joseph J Schwarz Xi Psi Phi Distinguished Alumni Award 2018 Michael K. Simpson Tau ’77 During the ADA Leadership Conference in Washington DC on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, the Xi Psi Phi Distinguished Alumni Award was presented in the Office of Michael K. Simpson, Idaho Second Congressional District. Mike Simpson is serving his ninth term in the US House of Representative for Idaho’s Second Congressional District. He is the “senior” representative of 4 dentists serving in the house—and the ONLY member of the Xi Psi Phi fraternity. He continues to serve as an advocate for the dental profession and assists the ADA Washington office on various legislative issues. Representative Simpson had knee surgery in Idaho and was unable to attend the Conference in Washington.

Student Doctor Band - The Dentites

ALPHA OMICRON CHAPTER University of Tennessee Health Science Center Chapter Editor- Taylor Leigh Rogers Memphis, TN – Founded 1921

T

he 2018 spring semester has been a busy yet rewarding one for the ZIPs at UTHSC! The semester kicked off with our annual event, ZIP Idol, that was hosted at The Bluff in Memphis. ZIP Idol is a talent show event that our chapter hosts, and many students across all classes participate and come out for a great music filled night. Our faculty band, The Dentones, made another outstanding appearance, and this year they were joined by the new student band, The Dentites. Turns out, there is phenomenal musical talent here at UTHSC! The event had a great attendance; so great that the bands were asked to come back and play for a Senior Farewell party after graduation this spring! ZIPs provided the appetizers and the venue for the night, and all of the proceeds were donated to the Memphis Boys & Girls club.

Faculty Band—The Dentones

Next, we added in a new philanthropy event to help raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The event took place at High Cotton Brewery and everyone that came donated money to the charity. Anyone that donated more than $5 had the chance to receive a “Thank You Basket” that ZIPs put together with all the best drinks and mixers. Also, this event doubled as a reward for the D1s making it to the end of anatomy. All D1 chapter members received a free drink on ZIPs to celebrate all their hard work and after-hours in the cadaver lab being over! Further, our ZIPs chapter collaborated with UTHC’s ASDA chapter to host a crawfish boil. The Monarch Dental group from Little Rock, AR and Smile Brands, Inc. cosponsored the event and supplied all the crawfish and fixings. It took place at the Memphis Yacht Club, and Dr. Richard Smith, a UTHSC alum, generously hosted the event on his dock and riverboat. To top it off, Smile Brands Inc. hosted a drawing for free gifts that included an Ipad, Beats by Dre, and a Bluetooth speaker. ZIPs and ASDA supplied all the drinks as well as corn-hole for

people to play. At the end of the day, about 200 people came out to enjoy sunshine and mudbugs alongside the mighty Mississippi River! To treat all our D4 members on becoming alumnae, on the week of graduation our chapter threw a “ZIP-pin’ Off!” lunch with none other than Memphis’ own Central BBQ provided. The Alpha Omicron chapter secretary, Britta Ristau, made all the seniors individual tooth-shaped cookies as a sweet little treat, and Dr. Stan Covington, Chapter Advisor, presented all the seniors their certificates. Apart from all the fun-filled events, we had many ZIP members that continued to serve elsewhere together throughout the semester extending forth their hands of friendship. Many members served through free dental clinics with Mission of Mercy and Remote Area Medical, and we also have a group attending a mission trip to Ecuador over the summer to do the same. With the spring semester coming to an end, we look forward to a great summer and fall semester as we start to plan the Annual Rush Week for the incoming Class of 2022!

College Chapter Reports

ALPHA PI CHAPTER Texas A & M Baylor College of Dentistry Dallas, Texas Founded 1921

B

etween socials, rush, community service events and nationals, the ZIPS at Texas A&M College of Dentistry in Dallas have been busy this past semester. The spring semester started off with the annual ZIPs Chicken Chase social. One lucky D1 was randomly chosen to wear a chicken costume and was “chased” around the Dallas bars by teams of fellow students trying to find him. We also competed in Dental Olympics, a yearly competition between the three Texas dental schools. ZIPs had the most members participating and we were able to bond with the D1s over friendly games of football, volleyball, dodgeball etc. And bring home the Gold! Rush week followed closely after Dental Olympics. Our rush chairs worked hard to make a recruitment video and plan a lunch and party that all centered around our theme: ZIPs are out of this world! Rush week is notorious at our school for being a lighter test week, giving the D1s a break to have fun with their classmates and get to know the three fraternities we have at TAMU. We had a blast with them! And they must have liked us too because we received the most 1st choice preferences! We can’t wait to get to know our 22 new members over the next couple years. Between socials, our members like to give back to the Dallas community. The ZIPs went to Nexus House, a safe home for battered women and children, where we were able to discuss oral hygiene practices, answer questions and get to know the residents. We also spent a day preparing over 5,000 sandwiches through the Dallas Soup Mobile to give to those in need. Our members also like to make sure we take care of each other

as well. The D2s at TAMU College of Dentistry receive their first patients in the spring, a transition that can feel pretty daunting. Our ZIPs upperclassmen block off their clinic schedules in order to assist the new clinicians through their first appointment and help relieve some

of the stress. Our Secretary also put together Intro to Clinic binders full of helpful tips to make sure our D2s are set up for success. The semester capped off with our President and Vice President traveling to Alton, Illinois for the Supreme assembly board meeting. The two XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

he spring semester kept up with the same enthusiasm as the fall for the Beta Mu chapter Zips at Southern Illinois University! We inducted the 17 new chapter members at the end of the fall semester, at our annual Holiday party at Dr. Parmalee’s party barn. The beginning of

the spring semester started off strong as we volunteered our time cooking homemade dishes at our local Ronald McDonald house in St. Louis. This year’s theme was Mexican cuisine! We continue the semester fun with a trip to a Blue’s hockey game against the Minnesota Wild. Next up, was the Xi Psi Phi Hospitality meeting at the annual Chicago Midwinter Meeting. We also elected a brand new group of officers for our upcoming Volume 114, Issue 2  |  13

College Chapter Reports school year! Debatably the highlight of the semester, was our annual spring ZIP Open golf tournament! The weather was unbeatable, based on the how the “spring” in Illinois has been progressing. It was a great boost to all of us to get through the rest of the semester. Still left on the agenda for the semester is a trip to a Cardinal’s game in St. Louis and our annual Senior Send Off at Dr. Savoca’s lake house. Our seniors will truly be missed! The summer months will consist of planning for our rush week in the fall and planning fun, new events for the following year. We are truly looking forward to finishing this semester and enjoying our less stressful summer months!

T

he Chi chapter of Xi Psi Phi had a busy Spring 2018 semester! This semester was full of academic events, social events, and the election of our new officers. Every month this semester we hosted a pre-clinical help lab and a social event for all members to attend. To start the semester off right, we had a ZIPS Happy Hour hosted at a local gaming parlor and social lounge where members gathered to socialize about the upcoming events of the semester and our Christmas breaks. Pre-clinical help labs held this semester allowed upper classmen to assist first and second year ZIPS members. This semester, first year students received help with occlusion and operative labs, and second year students received help with fixed lab. Also, this semester, our President, Karlton Smith, was awarded ZIPS Outstanding President 2017! A couple of the unique events hosted by ZIPS this semester were the Zip Tie Party and our annual trip to Weston. At Zip Tie, members were “zip tied” together for the event. This allowed members to spend quality time together, learning more about each other and allowing time for

ZIPS to share strategies and helpful hints with each other about how to excel in the pre-clinical lab and in the clinic. In April, we took busloads to Weston were we went to a local brewery and enjoyed the nice weather with outdoor games. This semester 20 of our members will be graduating. We will be hosting a Senior Sendoff event, where our seniors will be celebrated and they will share their future plans for dentistry with all members. At this event we will also install all our new officers, which were elected by members in April. We look forward to installing our new officers and the great things they will do for the Chi chapter of Xi Psi Phi starting next semester! Summer Swindle editor

T

his semester, ZIPS Beta has continued our tradition of serving the local community through a variety of outreach events, tutorial sessions, school spirit, and culinary delights. On November 26, 2017, ZIPS Beta sent a group of students to attend the Greater New York Dental Meeting, where we set up a “Dental and Oral Cancer Screening” booth. We enjoyed the opportunity to explore the vast showroom together and learn about many of the technological advancements that various dental companies are pioneering – including cutting edge laser dental equipment, intraoral scanning devices, and prismatic surgical loupes. At the request of many D2 students, our Tutorial Chair, Alfred Ong, organized and executed a very successful “Wax Rims” tutorial session on December 2, 2018. Twenty-three D2 students attended this event, and they all left with new insights and techniques to create high quality wax rims.

On February 20, 2018, ZIPS Beta members represented our chapter as the “Dental K-9 Unit: Brace Yourselves” at NYU’s Annual AllUniversity Games. Elizabeth Maas, George Vattes, and Ahmad Kahwam represented our chapter in the Tug of War, Dodgeball, and Limbo competitions. Additionally, on March 15, 2018, Beta Chapter met in the NYU Commons after a long exam filled week for a potluck feast. Our chapter President, Elizabeth Maas, prepared cacio e pepe and salad with ginger dressing, one of our D1 Representatives, Victor Sobolev, provided beverages and prosciutto with various hors d’oeuvres, and one of our initiates, Julia Kohler, brought apple galette. During the weekend of April 14, 2018, Micaela Ruppert-Majer and Alfred Ong represented Beta Chapter as co-delegates at this year’s annual Xi Psi Phi Supreme Assembly meeting in Alton, Illinois. I

t was another eventful winter quarter with the Iota chapter in San Francisco this year. 2018 started off with a big bang with the annual ZIPs Tahoe cabin trip on the weekend of January 12th. This year’s cabin trip committee, led by Vice President Joti Kaler and Treasurer Jonathan Lee, booked two neighboring cabins to host the successful weekend trip with our largest attendance ever. During February 5-9th, we celebrated Founder’s Day for the entire week with an online faculty fundraising auction, social media challenges, fraternity family appreciation, wearing ZIPs gear, and dinner at the end of the week. On February 28th, Vice President Joti Kaler organized a dinnerand-learn where Dr. Penelope Yip shared her personal journey through dental school and how she acquired and built her current successful practice. promoted oral health education at Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary on March 5th. The students loved the event and cannot wait for ZIPs to return. Our winter dinner banquet, held on March 9th, invited faculty guests Drs. Leela Ghaffari and Sophia Saeed to speak about their unique experiences and challenges in dentistry as women in a field that was previously saturated with only men. Our social chairs Johanna Tan and Allison Jan did an amazing job organizing both the delicious dinner and the after party at the Pa’ina Lounge in Japantown of San Francisco. It was here that the winners of the first Winter Olympics social media challenge were revealed by Rush Chairs Michael Nguyen and Trung Nguyen. During the dinner, Philanthropy Chairs, Rebecca Lerman and Julianna Ko, continued to fundraise for the annual Jamaica mission trip by selling raffle tickets before and during the dinner. On the horizon, we look forward to the remainder of the school year, our future board elections, the 2nd annual May Madness sporting event in Golden Gate Park, and the bittersweet Spring Senior Farewell dinner in June.

micron Chapter rang in the New Year with our annual ZIP Omicron Formal on Saturday, January 27th, 2018. Nearly 400 members, alumni and guests, gathered for a classy evening of dinner and dancing at the magnificent Liberty Grand. Compared to previous years, this year’s formal had even more creativity, elegance, and mystique as attendees embraced the Masquerade theme. Behind the seamless transitions is the meticulous planning by our formal committee coordinators, so we would like to take this chance and express our heartfelt thanks to Julie Delcorde, Becky Phillips, Golsa Samii, and Colette Mascarenhas for their countless hours of hard work over the last 6 months organizing this successful event. We also celebrated some of the achievements of our brothers and sisters during the presentation of the Omicron Chapter Awards. the betterment of the chapter during their undergraduate years. Becky Phillips – Partridge-Luks Award To honour the brother/sister in third or fourth year of dentistry who combines fraternal contribution with scholastics and extracurricular activity. Andrew Hall – Athletic Award To the member who has made an outstanding contribution to the athletic program in their undergraduate years while displaying leadership, sportsmanship, and excellence. After successful turnouts for our country-themed kickoff BBQ, new member initiation and Halloween blast, it was no surprise that our fundraising events for the Ronald McDonald House were also met with great enthusiasm. Along with the Bake Sale, these events provided opportunities for members from all years to de-stress and enjoy delicious treats before the exam season began. Not only did Omicron Chapter host amazing social events, we also continuously expanded our network and outreach. After a close race between very deserving candidates, we congratulated and welcomed Steph Silva, an outstanding second-year Zipper, as our Supreme Chapter Delegate for 2018.

She did an incredible job representing the Omicron Chapter at the ZIP National Assembly this April, and we look forward as she continues to shine as a senior executive on the ZIP Council for the next two years. Moreover, Omicron Chapter provided valuable resources to assist members take on the academic rigors of dental school through academic sessions and mentorship. Each class prepared ZIP seminars on a variety of topics. For first years, our chapter organized a course overview session in September to ease the potentially daunting transition into dental school. Additionally, we helped boost the first-years’ confidence in learning and challenging different test formats by hosting two dental anatomy mock bell ringers, as well as a Biomaterials review session seminar. For second years, our senior members gave an insightful prep session regarding comprehensive patient care and how to succeed in the clinic. There will also be a mock oral test for the Oral Diagnosis course coming up later in May. Fourth-year members presented their expertise and helpful tips to succeed in the clinic for the third years, as they took on the task of applying everything they learned in the classroom and laboratory to patient care. For our graduating members, President Julie Delcorde worked tirelessly to organize two weekend Prep Courses for the National Board Exams, among many others. Julie made sure to take excellent care of transportation and food so that ZIP members can give their full attention to their studies. With sessions like these, it is no wonder that Zippers win the majority of academic awards at the University of Toronto and go on to become very successful clinicians! Near the completion of another successful school year, we would like to bid farewell to our graduating members and send off our graduating fourth year members in style with the Pig Roast on May 4. Of course, our gratitude goes to our entire executive team led by President Julie Delcorde – we wish you all the best in your future endeavors! Through social, academic, and philanthropic events, Omicron Chapter provides unique and exceptional student experiences that have been an indispensable part of the University of Toronto since 1899. With Mr. Matt Galli taking over as President for the 2018-2019 year, ZIP Omicron Chapter will not only continue to excel but also grow and evolve.

Kelsie is a third-year dental student at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She grew up in the suburbs of Metro Detroit and received her Bachelor of Science in biology at the University of Michigan in 2015. Kelsie was passionate about healthcare throughout her undergraduate career and decided to pursue dentistry after several positive shadowing experiences. During dental school, she completed a study on Oral Health Literacy that will be presented at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in July of 2018. Additionally, she works in a laboratory focusing on the use of dental pulp stem cells for translational research in Regenerative Endodontics. Kelsie has received scholarships and recognition from the Michigan Dental Association, the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation, and the University of Michigan for academic excellence and community outreach. Kelsie is currently serving as the Outreach Chair for the Alpha Chapter’s Xi Psi Phi Fraternity and has leadership roles in several other organizations on campus. She is passionate about social justice issues and has implemented several initiatives at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry that make the dental school a more inclusive space for students, faculty and staff. Outside of school, Kelsie plays on a women’s ice hockey league and is training for an Olympic-length triathlon. She enjoys spending time with family and international travel; her most recent venture was a dental outreach mission to Meru, Kenya. Kelsie’s future ambitions include completing a master’s degree in endodontics after working in a community clinic for a year or two after graduation. She hopes to provide care to low-income and underserved communities in rural Michigan after completion of her master’s. Kelsie would like to extend her sincerest gratitude to the Xi Psi Phi Fraternity, especially the benefactors, Vivian and Reynold Foutz, who continue to enable dental students like herself, to pursue their passions, connect with their communities, and make a difference. Kelsie’s participation in “Zips” has been formative during her time in dental school and has provided her with invaluable experiences and friendships.

Santa Claus intrigued most 7-year-old children, but for Rachel, the Tooth Fairy was the most fascinating imaginary creature. At the young age of 7, Rachel’s interest in dentistry was piqued by her own extensive phase 1 orthodontic treatment, which required her to “crank” her own expander, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Despite growing up in Los Angeles with a family of lawyers—her mother, Michele, practiced many different areas of law; her father, Jeffrey, who practices estate planning, trust, and probate law in Los Angeles, California; and older brother, Max, who now practices business law in Portland, Oregon—the template of Rachel’s fascination and interest in dentistry was always deeply rooted and not at all swayed with the percolating legal minds in her young life. During high school, while shadowing and assisting her own dentist, Dr. Lisa Ryan, Rachel followed her other passions in singing and playing soccer. She was a member of elite choirs and played goalkeeper for the varsity soccer team. These passions continued into her college years at the University of California, Davis (‘UCD’) in Northern California. Rachel was selected out of 100 ladies, who auditioned to be one of eleven young women in UC Davis’ only all-female a cappella group, The Spokes. She also was a board member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, an active member in Global Dental Brigades, and one of two pre-dental liaisons for ASDA’s District 11, while majoring in Biological Sciences, with an emphasis in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior, and minoring in Psychology. In 2013, Rachel spent her 21st birthday with UC Davis’ branch of Global Dental Brigades in Honduras. The mission was to provide dental care, hygiene, and education to impoverished adults and children to in-need communities. This was the first time Rachel had traveled abroad to provide dental service. Due to the people she helped and her experiences inside the clinic, she formed a deep connection to community dentistry. This trip reinforced her goal to become a dentist. As an undergraduate, Rachel desired to attend the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry (‘UCSF’) after attending the annual Impressions Conference during her junior year. This conference was organized and hosted by UCSF dental students for

pre-dental undergraduate students. Not only did her experience connect her with UCSF, but it also connected her with the Xi Psi Phi Fraternity. All the students she met and worked with during the conference were affiliated with ZIPs. She was instantly drawn to their down-toearth and compassionate personalities. After that day, Rachel promised herself that if she were admitted to UCSF, she would become a ZIPs member. Upon her acceptance to UCSF, Rachel fulfilled her promise and became a member of Xi Psi Phi during the start of her D1 year. As a D2, she became Social Chair, and as a D3, she took on the role of President. In March of 2017, Rachel was the sole student representative invited to attend the Supreme Board of Directors Meeting in Chicago, where she presented and discussed the success of the Iota Chapter and how to expand the alumni network. This past September, as a D4, she had the opportunity to organize and attend the 6th annual dental mission trip to Jamaica. She had a wonderful time not only educating patients, but also providing hands-on dental treatment to hundreds of people in the rural community of Port Maria. In addition to being actively involved in ZIPs, Rachel continued her passion of singing by joining UCSF’s inter-professional a cappella group, Vocal Chords, and

continued participating in community service by becoming Pediatric Director for Children’s Health Hut. During her D1 year, she was elected as Class of 2018 Secretary, and then re-elected during her D2 year. As a D3, she was elected as Treasurer of the dental school student body and all student organizations. Rachel was awarded the Osher Scholarship Award in June 2015 for excellence in academics and community service, as well as, the Xi Psi Phi Iota Chapter Scholarship for fraternity involvement. In 2017, as a D3, Rachel was given the honor of being selected by the Xi Psi Phi Supreme Chapter as the recipient for the Reynold L. and Vivian Foutz Scholarship. This upcoming June 2018, Rachel will be graduating and soon after, will move to Portland, OR where she will be one of five residents in the VA Portland General Practice Residency for the 2018-2019 year. While spending the year in Portland, Rachel looks forward to exploring this new city (commonly known by Oregonians as “Rip City” or the “City of Roses”), while spending time with her older brother and ‘extracting’ more education about general dentistry. After residency, Rachel plans to move back to the Bay Area to practice general dentistry. She looks forward to being an involved ZIPs member for her upcoming and exciting adventurous years in dentistry.

When asked what year of dental school training, he responded that he wasn’t in dental school but was a student’s boyfriend. That same evening, a graduate informed me that he was headed to the post-graduate periodontal program at LSU. He remarked that I had inspired him to continue his dental education. I told him to make me proud and continue the ZIP way wherever his travels took him. So, I am asking each and every ZIP member here tonight, especially the students, not only try to do your best but try to inspire someone to do and be their best.
