H
ow time flies! With the start of Summer, I start my final year as Supreme Chapter President. As I reflect on the past year, we celebrated the graduation of the Dental Class of 2019. Congratulation on your transition from dental student to DDS/DMD and from fraternity dental student to fraternity alumnus. The Supreme Chapter met in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, for our yearly Board Meeting. We met with dental students from Omicron Chapter and visited their fraternity house. At the house, Matthew Galli from Omicron Chapter was awarded the 2018 Outstanding College Chapter President plaque. The new year begins with the 2019 ADA FDI World Dental Congress September 4–8, 2019, in San Francisco, California. The Xi Psi Phi Hospitality Reception will be held Friday September 6th, 5PM-7PM at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. At the reception, the Joseph Schwarz Distinguished Alumnus Award will be presented to Dr. Christopher J. Salierno (Beta Nu 2005). The next Xi Psi Phi Board of Directors’ Meeting and Supreme Assembly will be held March 20–21, 2020, in Dallas, TX at the
Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry. Lastly, I hope you are fulfilling my goal to “inspire.” As a dental student, propose a fellow student for college chapter membership into your fraternity chapter. As an alumnus, maintain your annual alumni membership and reach out to fellow alumni to help support the Dr. Randy P. Gurrola Supreme Chapter. A
t the Board of Director’s meeting in March of 2019, a story came to light that was quite interesting. Tim Regan, Beta ’92, told us of his father, Peter Regan who was in dental school at NYU and joined the Beta chapter of the Xi Psi Phi fraternity, graduating in 1958. He met Tim’s mom, Patricia Ahlert, who was also attending NYU dental school 2 years behind him. Upon hearing about the Zip fraternity from Peter, she too wanted to join the fraternity. Her application was denied
solely on the basis that she was a female. She went on to graduate in 1960 as the valedictorian of her class and became the first certified woman cosmetic dentist in New Jersey. Our fraternity has come a long way, as we not only have been including females in our fraternity for many years, but we had one of the Anne-Lise Fink, DDS first female Supreme Presidents, Susan Smith, Rho ’87, back in 2006!! Followed by Penelope Yip, Iota ’94 in 2008 and yes myself, Anne-Lise Fink Iota ’94 in 2012!! Upon hearing this story it was decided by the Board of Director’s to award Patricia Ahlert membership to the Xi Psi Phi fraternity posthumously. Fraternally,

efore the serious business of the Board of Directors’ Meeting, many members and friends and family joined together in an excursion of the city graciously put together by Andrea Carvalho Omicron ‘00, Province III co-director and Omicron college chapter advisor. We began our adventure with a bus ride and tour to Niagara Falls!! It was quite spectacular to see especially as there was plenty of ice remaining from the recent snow storms.

his years Supreme Chapter Board of Directors’ Meeting was held at The Ritz Carlton in Toronto, Canada on March 23, 2019. That afternoon we had the opportunity to visit the beautiful Omicron chapter house and met with some of the students attending University of Toronto Dental School. The evening came to a close with dinner at The CN Tower in downtown Toronto.

ALPHA OMICRON CHAPTER University of Tennessee Health Science Center Memphis, TN – Founded 1921 FRUITFUL FOOTPRINTS & FAREWELLS
P
icking up where we left off in December 2018, our chapter is very proud of the results that have come from starting up our Alumni reach-out program. We have continuously received donations, responses, and support from our ZIP alumni, some even being graduates of UTHSC dental school over 40 years ago. For the alumni that opted to be put on our email list, our goal is to keep them updated, send them newsletters, and invite them to all of our events throughout each school year. Our fundraising chair, Thomas Butler, has done an incredible job with this new task, and his countless hours of work have not gone unnoticed. That being said, our council has decided to expand duties and have a fundraising/alumni-relations committee to help him out with our ideas. We are beyond grateful for the feedback and contributions this alumni program has given our organization, and we can’t wait to see what we can do with it in the future. To keep the newly-founded tradition rolling, we kicked-off this semester’s events in February with ZIP Idol at The Bluff in Memphis. This event has been used as a philanthropy event for a few years now. It’s always a great night of entertainment. ZIPs provided the appetizers, drinks, and the venue for the night, and all of the proceeds were donated to The Boys and Girls club of Memphis. The students and faculty always look forward to seeing the faculty band, ‘The Dentones,’ play. This year The Dentones nearly doubled their bandmembers and our new initiate dean, Dean Ragain, lead the show XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

for them! Overall this year we had a larger number of performances sign up for the night, including singers and musicians from all classes. Even our new D1 members shocked the crowd with how musically talented they are – they are already planning ahead for the next gig! We really look forward to hosting this event every year and we hope it continues to grow. It always seems as if the majority of events get scheduled back-to-back at the end of the semester, but I believe spring-time in Memphis is the best time of the year to enjoy. In April we treated our D1’s to a night out

at High Cotton Brewery to reward them for finishing out gross anatomy. Then, in May we co-hosted a crawfish boil with UTHSC’s ASDA chapter. The crawfish boil took place at the Memphis Yacht club on alumnus Dr. Richard Smith’s dock and riverboat. Monarch Dental group from Little Rock, AR and Smile Brands, Inc. co-sponsored the event for us and supplied all the crawfish. ZIPs and ASDA supplied all the drinks. Even though the crawfish boil had to take place on a rainy day, that didn’t stop students, residents, and faculty from coming out to enjoy mudbugs and giveaways! Volume 115, Issue 2 | 9

Also, in May, we honored our current D4 members with a luncheon for graduation. Given a choice, of course they all chose to have Memphis’ original Central BBQ catered. At the lunch, each member was awarded their ZIP membership certificates. We are so proud of their accomplishments and service here over the last 4 years. Of our 29 D4 members, 10 of them have matched and decided to pursue residencies! We wish them all the best of luck in their careers; they will be greatly missed!

On a rather sad note, on the same day we celebrated the retirement of one of our favorite ZIP faculty members, Dr. Weeda. Dr. Weeda has been a long-time supporter of our organization. He has always been willing to help cater to events, and there was rarely a time where you would see him miss an event! We hope he enjoys his retirement and hope to see him often!

ALPHA PSI CHAPTER University of Texas, Houston Branch Houston, TX Founded 1932
I
n the initial semester of its reactivation, the Alpha Psi Chapter of Xi Psi Phi engaged with the Houston homeless population by volunteering at a local shelter and giving out oral health products. For the next semester, the fraternity shifted its focus to a different marginalized sector of the city: refugees. Historically, Houston has resettled more refugees than any American city—and even more than many countries! As future dental providers, members should be familiar with the demographics of the city they work in so that they can provide services that improve access to care to those who lack it. Houston has developed unique ways to alleviate the stress of moving to an area with a foreign culture and language for refugees. One of those programs is Plant it Forward, which teaches refugees how to manage urban green farms that provide healthy food for their families and a source of income when the crops are sold. On an early spring morning, fraternity members came to the farm to learn about how it operates and to assist the farmer in charge. Using shovels and hoes, members pulled

out weeds which block plants from receiving nutrients, thereby reducing the future harvest at the farm. Others were able to spread fertilizer and clear debris. Considering how expensive healthy food can be, urban farms address both the financial and nutritional needs of refugees. Addressing nutritional needs is one way to improve oral health. While the Plant it Forward was a valuable bonding experience for the group, the subsequent dinner and laser tag social was a memorable night filled with laughter and fierce competition. Members brought family members and significant others to the event and

had a great time playing laser tag and bowling the night away. Houston is home to many amazing restaurants due to its diverse population and students enjoyed dining together and discovering new cuisine. The members have also kept busy with planning future events for the fraternity, including setting up a big brothers and sisters program with a local orphanage and an event aimed at helping patients at our school. ALPHA PI CHAPTER Texas A&M College of Dentistry Founded 1921
H
owdy from Dallas! Spring of 2019 was a huge success. Not only did we gain a new class of members, we celebrated the election of motivated and forward-thinking officers for the upcoming year. We kicked the semester off with our annual Spring semester “Back to School Bash” to welcome the entire school back to Dallas to finish our 2018–2019 year off strong. It was a blast reuniting with our fellow members! We continued the fun with our annual Chicken Chase social event for the D1s. For this event, one lucky D1 student is chosen at random to wear a chicken costume and is taken to a local bar to “hide” as the rest of the participants are split into teams to “chase” and find the chicken. It’s a great opportunity for our members to interact with the D1s and for the D1s to get to know our amazing fraternity on a more personal level outside of school. We ended the month of February with the initiation of our D2 class. We had a great celebration to officially welcome them into the Xi Psi Phi Fraternity. Each of the 22 initiated members was pinned by his or her respective Big Sib and given a T-Shirt with our fraternity’s emblem. They were ecstatic to continue representing ZIPs both at school and outside of school. Additionally, many of our members serve on the Executive Board of various other organizations at the school. Not only are they involved in our own fraternity, but they are also passionate about protecting, serving, and improving our profession as a whole by attending national meetings such as ASDA’s Annual and District sessions and ADEA’s national conferences. Unfortunately, this year’s annual Dental Olympics, a sporting

competition between the three Texas dental schools, was cancelled due to the inclement weather conditions in Dallas. However, considering our past performance and championship titles there is no doubt our athletic members would have contributed greatly to holding our title of champion. Following closely after the cancelled event was Rush week. We had a “Meet the ZIPs” event the week prior to further introduce ourselves to the 75 rushees. Our rush chairs worked tirelessly for weeks to make it a memorable experience for the D1 rushees and our members. This year’s theme was Zippin’ Through the Past, and our recruitment video, decorations, lunch, and party were all centered around the theme. This week is notorious at our school for being a lighter exam week, allowing the D1s to fully embrace the

experience and enjoy it with their fellow classmates. By the end of the week we met all of the rushees and added a great class of 25 new members to our fraternity. We’re so excited for all of our new additions and we can’t wait to get to know them over the next couple of years. Between all of our events we also had numerous officer meetings throughout the semester to ensure our chapter was in good standing with our finances, events, philanthropy efforts, and fundraising. discuss oral hygiene practices with children in the Dallas area. We also continued volunteering at the Dallas Soup Mobile to give back to those in need in our community. Additionally, we had various happy hours and events strictly planned for our members to allow us to spend more time together, especially with our graduating seniors. In the Spring, our second years receive their first patients, and in typical ZIPs fashion we make sure to take care of each other. Our upperclassmen put together clinic binders XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY
filled with helpful tips, documents, protocol steps and much more to make sure our D2s are set up for success. Furthermore, they block off their clinic schedules in order to assist the new clinicians with their first appointments to help relieve stress and ensure they run smoothly. We ended the year with our annual boat party to celebrate a successful year, our new ZIPs class, and our graduating seniors. We will greatly miss the Class of 2019, but we definitely see a bright future for each and every one of them.
This year has been filled with lasting memories, hard work and a tremendous amount of fun. We can’t wait to see what the 2019–2020 year has in store for us. We’re proud of our chapter for receiving the Walter C. Harrison Award for Chapter Achievement for the second year in a row! he Beta Mu chapter Zips at Southern Illinois University kept the ball rolling from the fall semester into the spring! After inducting our 17 new members at the end of the fall, we started the spring semester off strong as we volunteered our time cooking and serving homemade dishes at our local Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis. We continued the semester fun with

a trip to watch our St. Louis Blues hockey team beat the New Jersey Devils. Next up was the Xi Psi Phi Hospitality Reception at the annual Chicago Midwinter Meeting. We also elected a brand new group of officers for our upcoming school year! The highlight of everyone’s semester was our annual spring Zip Open Golf Tournament. The
weather was perfect this year! This event wrapped up the semester very nicely. Still left on the agenda for this summer is our annual Senior Send Off at Dr. Savoca’s lake house. Our seniors will truly be missed! The summer months will consist of planning for our best rush week yet in the fall, as well as fun and exciting events for the upcoming year! XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

his Spring 2019 semester was an eventful one for the Chi chapter of Xi Psi Phi! Throughout the semester, we hosted monthly social events and preclinical help labs for all ZIPS members to attend. Pre-clinical help labs held this semester allowed upper classmen to assist first and second year ZIPS members in preparing for their upcoming lab projects and

practicals. Our first year students were able to get tips on occlusion and operative labs and our second year members got advice on crown and bridge preparations for fixed lab. We celebrated the retirement of our former alumni advisor, Dr. Nelson, and were excited to announce Dr. Kessler as our new advisor. She is energetic and eager to act as a mentor for our Chi chapter! Our ZIPS members were able to enjoy some special events this semester including the happy hour hosted before our school’s “Mandiball” formal as well as our annual trip to Weston. Mandiball is an exciting time for our school but being able to hold a social event prior to the formal for our ZIPS members allowed us to spend quality time together in a more intimate setting. It was also
nice to get together and take pictures together outside of our typical scrubs attire and enjoy each other’s company. For our Weston trip, we took buses to Weston, MO where we got to explore the town’s local brewery and enjoy great weather playing outdoor games. At the end of this semester, 25 of our members will be graduating. This month we are hosting a Senior Sendoff event to celebrate all of our seniors’ accomplishments and their future endeavors as dental professionals. We will also be installing our new officers at the Senior Sendoff who were elected in April. After a great spring semester, there is much to look forward to for our newly elected officers and initiated members of the Chi chapter of Xi Psi Phi next fall! fter making it through and enduring a very stormy sub-zero degrees season, Beta Omicron Chapter didn’t let Mr. Jack Frost stop us from all the action! We’ve been at it, keeping our brains warm and clinical hands defrosted by hosting a series of enriching events. But what better way to kick of the beginning of December than volunteering at DuPage Children’s Museum for their Holiday party! Members helped Santa’s elves make toys and entertain kids who came. Of course, being dental students in the middle of a Chicago winter storm, we needed to keep our hands well-oiled too . . . with video games! Thanks to our social chair Young Kim, graciously hosting chapter members for our ZIPsmas/ white elephant where we played Super Smash Brothers on the Nintendo Switch all night long and got into a fight or two over white elephant gifts! (“For the HOUUUUUSE!!!”) Aside from the fun and games, come February, our very own secretary Oriana Pacheco organized a trip for members to visit a nearby dental lab, Power Dental Studio in Lisle, Illinois. to see what goes on in a dental lab, from an impression sent by a dentist to a fully fabricated overdenture! As we all know, communication is key–same goes for a great working relation between dentist and dental technicians. Our fundraising coordinator Howard Tsoi did an excellent job executing our Embroidered Scrubs sale Pt2 to which we raised over $600
that helped go towards funding our expenses at Research Extravaganza that we hosted in April. This was the second time that Beta Omicron hosted Research Extravaganza, with special keynote guest speaker Dr. Spiro Megremis of the ADA. We want to give dental students who are involved in research the opportunity to present their projects to professors and fellow peers at Midwestern Volume 115, Issue 2 | 17

We had such a success this year, very well and nicely done to our director of ext. affairs, Hannah Cho! To wrap up the end of Beta Omicron’s 2nd year at MWU, members

volunteered with SEASPAR at Suburbanite Bowl and had one heck of a strike-out time with members of the special needs community. Before 4th year dental colleagues graduated, one of our didactics liaison Marisa Chanin put together our “Ask the D4s” and filled the panel with excellent people who are moving on to specialty programs such as Endodontics at Columbia University and Orthodontics at Marquette
University. Congratulations to everyone! We end the year by holding elections for our new Executive members of 2019–2020. I personally cannot wait to see what our 3rd year at MWU is like, and what goodies the new Executive members have in store for the Beta Omicron family! his January, Omicron Chapter rang in the new year with a bang with our annual Xi Psi Phi formal gala on January 26. This year, the theme was “A Starry Night” and was hosted at the illustrious Hotel X Toronto. The formal sold out in record time as 330 ZIP members and their guests enjoyed a night full of new memories, delicious food, exciting giveaways and lots of dancing.
This semester, Omicron Chapter president Matthew Galli launched an exciting initiative to allow ZIP members to learn about the world of dentistry outside the classroom. The series of presentations allowed ZIP members to connect with sponsors and gain valuable real-world knowledge. Some of the events included: a dinner with Straumann Dental Implants and a full day course with Sinclair Dental where topics such as practise construction and CADCAM were covered. hosted their annual Year End Pig Roast. The Pig Roast gave members an opportunity to bid their farewells to the graduating class, reminisce on the past year and to elect the new executive council. n March 8, the Iota Chapter of Xi Psi Phi at the University of California, San Francisco had its annual Winter Quarter Dinner. At these dinners, it is tradition to have a couple of special guest speakers to entertain, give advice, and talk about what they are passionate about. This dinner was no exception as we heard from UCSF Faculty members Dr. Kjeld Aamodt and Dr. Diana Nguyen. Dr. Aamodt spoke about his passion for orthodontics, specifically clear aligners and his mission to expand dental care. Dr. Nguyen spoke about her journey into dentistry, the challenges she faced, and what it means to be a good healthcare provider. The

Carl and Judy Sebelius
O
ur hearts are heavy with grief with the passing of this Honorary Life-time Member of Xi Psi Phi Fraternity, Mrs. Judy Sebelius – wife of Carl L. Sebelius, Jr. Judy survived a stroke (CVA) earlier this year and was recovering at her home in Memphis. Judy Sebelius, 78, died Saturday, June 8, 2019. Judy was a vital part of The Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity and was almost always present at our meetings. She was awarded Honorary Life Time membership in 2017. She and Carl are greatly missed and we are honored to have been part of their lives.
I will never forget that Judy telephoned me last month sharing her concern for Peggy’s health. I will treasure the memory of that phone call for the rest of my life. She was a
giving and kind lady . . and I am so glad the Board of Directors honored her with Life-time Membership in Xi Psi Phi, so that her name will continue in the history of our Fraternity. Keith Dickey
Gail and I are so sad to learn of Judy’s passing. We had no idea that Judy was dealing with health issues. We have fond memories of the good times we had with Judy and Carl. They were such gracious and caring people and they were fun to be with.

Alison Jan, Iota’s current President, called the dinner to order and thanked all alumni and members for attending. ADA To Honor Congressman Mike Simpson With Distinguished Service Award
he ADA News (5/30, Garvin) reports that the ADA Board of Trustees will honor Rep. Mike Simpson with the ADA Distinguished Service Award at the ADA FDI World Dental Congress, which will take place Sept. 4–8 in San Francisco. The article notes that “the award is the highest honor the ADA Board of Trustees can bestow on a member.” ADA President Jeffrey M. Cole
said, “As the longest serving dentist member of Congress, Mike Simpson has been a friend of dentistry, and the patients we serve, for decades.” Dr. Cole added, “His leadership efforts in Congress to help pass the Action for Dental Health Act will provide access to federal funding for projects that strengthen the safety net and help eliminate barriers to care like Missions of Mercy and emergency room referral programs. With his work on the House Appropriations Committee and the respect he has in the House as a leader that can work with everyone, he has been instrumental in seeing that the oral health programs that benefit patients across the country are funded. Our profession owes a great deal of gratitude to Mike for all he has been able to accomplish.”
