I

start my time as Supreme Chapter President, we are facing some changes in our fraternity. For many people, change is more threatening than challenging. They see it as the destroyer of what is familiar and comfortable rather than the creator of what is new and exciting. Most people, and organizations, would rather be comfortable than excellent. We have seen a lot of change in our world, our practices, and our fraternity. For change to be successful, it must be planned. We must be in control of the changes instead of at their mercy. Successful changes are based on core values. Our values provide a common language for aligning our Supreme Chapter with our students. Our students and faculty have had to change our education system this last couple of years to be able to deliver dental care safely. This change has caused a financial burden for our fraternity, as our ability to have contact with our students was limited. We must

continue to motivate our alumni to pay dues as this helped our fraternity to remain in existence. It is the alumni dues that allow us to have the Supreme Assembly and allow students to meet, exchange ideas and keep the young spirit of the ZIPS alive. ZIPS Our Dental Community Survives ANNE-LISE FINK, DDS, IOTA ’94

O

ur fraternity can serve as a space, aside from your home or office, where you can find fellowship and share ideas and passions. I believe this is the reason we have survived for the past 133 years and will continue to do so. The pandemic turned our world upside down, but we as a profession have navigated our way back and established ourselves firmly as essential health care workers. This is where our fraternity plays a vital role. We may be socially distanced, but we can all share our experiences and find solutions together. It was during this recent crisis that I found myself reaching out to various ZIP friends for help in purchasing PPE, supplies, and looking for ideas to help with facilitating reopening my office!! One of the great benefits in being part of the ZIP family are the connections I have established locally as well as nationally. Our chapters have learned that they can survive through difficult times and, in some cases even build their membership, when in person events were not allowed.

Ingenuity and resilience made this possible. I applaud our active members and their chapters for coming up with ingenious ways of recruiting new members ( 261 ) and maintaining existing membership!! Together we can continue to enjoy our professional family by sharing, caring, validating and just being Anne-Lise Fink, DDS there for one another. T

he Supreme Chapter Board of Directors’ Meeting was held at Baylor College of Dentistry Texas A & M University on March 19, 2022. Unfortunately, due to covid we were not allowed to meet at the dental school, but rather at the Hilton Home 2 Suites directly across the street. We were able to meet in person and ZOOM those members unable to attend in person.

Words cannot express our gratitude to Keith Dickey for the endless hours he has devoted to our Fraternity. At this Board meeting, he relinquished his duties as Supreme Treasurer to Penelope Yip. He is presently still serving as Supreme Secretary as we make arrangements for the next transition. As George Knight relates “Keith Dickey is truly the heart of this organization.”

COLLEGE CHAPTER REPORTS

ALPHA PI CHAPTER Texas A&M College of Dentistry Founded 1921 Purav Patel President

C

oming off a year where everything was put to pause, the Alpha PI Chapter of ZIPS has had an amazing start to the 2021-2022 school year. At the moment, our fraternity only consists of D3 and D4 students. The recent pandemic took away the opportunity for us to grow together and form bonds with each other so this year will focus on us recreating that experience! JULY We started our summer by collaborating with the other fraternities and hosted a happy hour for the D3s and current fraternity members. Shortly after we rushed the D3 class. Our rush theme was “zipping through the alphabet” where people were to come dressed as anything starting with the first letter of their name. Here we have our president at the time (Sammi Hofstra as Shrek) and our current president (Purav Patel as Pennywise) At the end of the rush week, we welcomed 18 new members to our family. Great way to end the summer semester!

September

AUGUST After a well-deserved summer break, we started off the semester by selecting our new officer team. This team has worked diligently to plan events for our members and as well as welcoming the D1s and D2s. SEPTEMBER The fall semester started off with a happy hour. It was a great chance to interact with our new members and welcome them into the group. On the left, we have some of our new D3 members and on the right, we have a friendship that goes back 6 years!

OCTOBER We started the month by hosting the D1s and welcoming them to our school. This was a great chance for them to take a break from exams,

learn about zips, and meet our upperclassmen. A month known for its rush of exams ended with our annual TriFraternity Halloween party. Looks XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

like Pennywise was an inspiration to others. NOVEMBER As things started to slow down with school, our ZIPS members were more active than ever. We started the month by giving back to the community and volunteered at Allen Saxe Dental Clinic in Arlington Texas. One of the many traditions we have as a fraternity is the annual Chicken Chase. This event hosts the new D1s in their spring semester of dental school, but the current D2s did not get this opportunity last year. We decided to host a unique event for them called the Turkey Chase. As the semester is coming to an end, we decided to take a moment and be thankful for the new friends we have been given through our fraternity. We finished the month with our annual Zipsgiving!

Council Representative; and Allison Long, Rush Chair. Despite the obstacles that COVID-19 presents, the newly elected officers have been working hard to better the chapter in new and creative ways during these unprecedented times. April 2021 was host to another installment of a Beta Mu biannual favorite: The ZIPS Open. The ZIPS Open is a 9-hole scramble golf tournament, which consists of four person teams. It is open to all members of the school, and it is an important fundraiser for the Beta Mu chapter. A

fter a year of physical distancing and no social gathering, Beta Omicron chapter at MWU-IL was thrilled to host our first meet and greet of the year! We had a fantastic time meeting our faculty advisors, Drs. Toepke and Arnashus on a beautiful and warm Saturday. At the end of a stressful first week, we took a study/ sim break to chat and share with each other what some fun activity we did over summer with some delicious sandwiches and cold drinks. Our executive board members are working hard to recruit new members and plan for our fundraiser and social event. To rebuild a strong community among members, we are encouraging everyone to make suggestions as we want to curate events to the chapter’s interests and hobbies. On an exciting note, David Lee (ZIP’s President) suggested a possible ZIP end-of-the year event, which will involve some type of competition among our dental family at CDMI. We look forward to sharing more about it with fellow ZIPs in our next Quarterly.

lthough, the Iota Chapter of Xi Psi Phi at University of California, San Francisco can’t hold their annual glamorous dinners for their members - the alumni found a better way to show love and support by funding upperclassmen in new fashionable scrubs FIGS! Not only are we treating patients in the clinic with passion, but also comfortable and in style. Members got to choose whichever style/color they want. The alumni also gave the underclassmen sporty hydro flask water bottles to keep them cool and hydrated. Thanks ZIPS! It’s unfortunate that COVID-19 has changed a lot and cancelled most in person group events. However, Iota Chapter of Xi Psi Phi at University of California, San Francisco fraternity board organized a fun ZIPS

better. It was a great opportunity to meet our members throughout the fraternity and to gain some mentorship and advice.

Most years, this is the highlight of the academic year for many ZIPpers; however, as a council, we were still able to host incredibly helpful talks by Protect Financial and Professional Insurance Centre in February, March and April. These webinars focused on centrally important topics such as, resume/associate agreements, wealth management and disability insurance. Students were greeted by generous door prizes and fun raffles at these online seminars. Members also continued to benefit from the various academic resources found in our extensive Academic package

distributed at the beginning of each academic year. We are beyond grateful for the tireless efforts of our 2020-2021 president, Evan Carr Kinnear, to make this Xi Psi Phi year one to remember. We wish him the absolute best in this exciting unique start to his dental profession in private practice! We also eagerly look forward to being lead by Niti Chopra, to whom he passes on the torch, in the upcoming year. We are grateful for this year of “ZIP Redefined,” but also await with pleasure the day when we can meet again in person and celebrate our resilience, our sponsors and most importantly, our fraternity! ur College Chapter Advisor for Gamma Chapter, Dr. Susan Chialastri, Gamma ’82, provided the following information concerning her father, Dr. Augustine Chialastri, Gamma ’49 . . He served as Chapter Advisor for Gamma Chapter for many years . . and now Susan has been following in his footsteps for over ten years at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry. Her brother, Gregg Chialastri, Gamma ’78, practices dentistry in their hometown, Flourtown, Pennsylvania.

They called him “the Kid” which was on his mug. XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

r. Maranga, of Aquebogue, New York, has been involved in organized dentistry at the national, state and local levels for 30 years. She is past chair of the ADA Council on Membership and past president of the Suffolk County Dental Society. She is a graduate of the ADA’s Institute on Diversity and was elected to a three-year term on the ADA Committee on Diversity and Inclusion. In addition, she has served as president of the New York State Association of Endodontists and academic affairs director of the American Association of Women Dentists. She was elected and sworn into office on Monday, October 19, at the American Dental Association House of Delegates. In her speech to the House she said, “I am here to listen and strongly represent you. I am your voice. I’m ready to meet the challenge and look forward to a great year.” We are so proud of Dr. Maranga and look forward to her continued leadership.

ur brother, William Tinkler Beta ’54 died on July 7th at home in Holtsville, NY. He is

survived by his wife Michaele (Mickey) Tinkler and many children and grandchildren.

T

he Supreme Chapter Office was notified anonymously today by US Mail from Incline

Village, Nevada, that GAYLORD L. HALL, Iota ’54, of San Francisco and Los Altos Hills, California and our 36th Supreme President passed away on December 16, 2019. He was a valued member and creative leader of Xi Psi Phi Fraternity for over 65 years. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Estate Planning Giving Back to Xi Psi Phi Foundation

our will is the easiest, most effective way to ensure that your family, friends and the Xi Psi Phi Foundation are supported as you intend. Sample bequest language is “I give, devise and bequeath (written amount, percentage of estate or description of property) to the Xi Psi Phi Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation with principal offices located at 160 S. Bellwood Drive, Suite Z, East Alton, Illinois, 62024, to be used for the purposes designated by the Directors of the Foundation.” Supporting the Xi Psi Phi Foundation with a portion of your estate does not always require a will. Here are some other options for you to consider: Life Insurance: Name the Xi Psi Phi Foundation as owner and beneficiary of a policy you no longer need, or a policy written for the purpose of a charitable gift. The gift will take place outside of probate, the often time-consuming and costly process of determining the validity of a will and administering the estate.

Retirement Plan: Give the Xi Psi Phi Foundation a portion or all of your IRA, 401(k), Keough or other retirement plan fund from your estate. These types of assts, when used a charitable gifts, avoid income and estate taxes; all that is required is signing the right form, and no probate is involved. Payable-upon-Death Account: Leave checking accounts, savings accounts, saving bonds and other deposit certificates to the Xi Psi Phi Foundation. The gift can be easily accomplished by simply filling out the appropriate form; the asset will be transferred at your death. Your attorney, tax professional or financial advisor can provide details about other ways to support the Xi Psi Phi Foundation outside of your will. Your thoughtful planning leaves a legacy to inspire the future members of Xi Psi Phi.
