XI PSI PHI PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The struggle is real DR. RANDY P. GURROLA

Supreme Chapter President 2018–2020

I

t seems like yesterday that I was installed as the Supreme Chapter President of Xi Psi Phi. How true is the saying, “Time flys when you are having fun.” Almost two years have passed and like many administrations, we have had ups and downs. Today is a much different world that has impacted the way we communicate with students and alumni. We have tried to incorporate changes at the Supreme Chapter level to help merge the transition of the “old guard” with modern technology. A major change is our new website (www. xipsiphi.org). Thank you Supreme Editor, Dr. Anne-Lise Fink and Past Supreme President, Dr. Penelope Yip for all your hard work. Hopefully, the new website will address a major concern from the alumni, the ability to pay membership dues via the internet. We will continue to try and modernize our communication links with the dental students and alumni. Like many organizations, we struggle with dental student membership, alumni membership and alumni involvement. The bond between dental students and alumni is precious. Students can always use alumni support just as alumni can benefit from potential employment relationships. Everyone hears how much debt our students have incurred between undergraduate school, dental school and for some, post-graduate programs. Listening to recent dental school graduates, they are

not buying dental practices because of the increased debt, instead, they are seeking employment. What better way to learn more about the profession than working with a seasoned veteran dentist. I look forward to our upcoming yearly Board Meeting March 20-21, 2020, as we will also be hosting a Dr. Randy P. Gurrola Supreme Assembly. We look forward to meeting with the Chapter student representative and their College Chapter Advisor to hear each Chapters successes and challenges. Also, hopefully, dental students will have the opportunity to network with their peers. My goal was to try and inspire students and alumni to be a better Xi Psi Phi member. The fraternity has persevered for 131 years. As long as I can, I will continue to promote and support the fraternity. Will you? Fraternally, Dr. Randy P. Gurrola Iota Class of 1989

SUPREME EDITOR’S MESSAGE

Connecting with our members is important ANNE-LISE FINK, DDS, IOTA ’94

Supreme Editor

I

am pleased to announce that the Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity new and updated website is up and running. Just type in Xipsiphi.org. and visit the site to discover current and past issues of the Quarterly, Events and Board Meeting dates, our President’s message, as well as the ability to donate and/or pay your yearly dues through Pay Pal. The question of “to print or not to print,” which was first brought up by our past Supreme editor, Carl Sebelius in 2016, will be discussed again at the next board meeting on March 20. With the cost of postage increasing over the past few years, printing both issues of the Quarterly is becoming a challenge financially. So the question is do we stop printing our issues and only have digital copies available on the website or do we only print the Fall issue and have both digital copies on the website or continue as we are now with printing both issues and having the digital copies on the website?? We have made several attempts at increasing our funds by advertisements, sponsorships and donations, but the long term success has not been favorable. We are dependent on our members to not only help with donations and sponsorships, but also find companies who are willing to advertise with us.

We are making every effort for our fraternity to be more visible and available to the new dental students as well as alumni. Our hope is that we can be that helping hand that reaches out and offers support and camaraderie as the students transverse through the sometimes difficult passage of dental school and Anne-Lise Fink, DDS the establishment of their career. We also hope to keep alumni in contact with the Supreme chapter and become involved with the many activities and fun times we have at board meetings and supreme assemblies!! If there are any suggestions for accomplishing this goal as well as increasing our funds for the Quarterly, please send an email to: xipsiphi@hotmail.com with any ideas. lot of change is happening at UTHSC College of Dentistry with our new dean, new building plans, and schedule changes to accommodate the new NBDE structure, but the dominance of the Xi Psi Phi chapter remains constant. To start off the 2019-2020 school year, social chair Sean Fitzhugh planned a phenomenal rush week for the Class of 2023. The traditional Monday night Meet-&-Greet was held at High Cotton Brewery. All ZIP members were invited to welcome the incoming class alongside the executive members. Our annual ZIPs cocktail party is always such a great turnout, so this year we aimed for a bigger venue, 409 S. Main. D3 & D4 members graciously provided a spread of finger foods for the night, and the chapter provided the DJ and drinks. It was great night of mingling, dancing, and finally getting to dress up in something other than scrubs! Friday night was the annual ZIP Flip Cup Tournament. Out of 30+ teams that entered the tournament, the same D3

team took the victory for the second year in a row. Overall, it was a great week getting to know & help guide the potential new members. Rush week was followed up with providing the D1’s with Chick-fil-A, donuts, & coffee to give them some brain food for their first exam. This new class was able to see first-hand that our fraternity values both friendship and leadership, and that there will always be a brother around to support them! Following rush week, our faculty sponsor Dr. Stan Covington strongly encouraged the new students to consider joining our fraternity. He stated, “Being in a professional fraternity provides a wonderful outlet to have fun, let off some steam, and share in the highs and lows that inevitably come with professional school. There will be times when you will ask for help, and times when you will provide it.” By the time rush was over, we had the privilege of initiating 48 new members into the Alpha Omicron chapter. Initiation took place on October 18th in Dr. Covington’s home. New initiates, faculty ZIP members, and our executive council were present. Food and drinks were provided to everyone to kick off initiation. Afterwards, president Corey Acosta & vice

president Betsy Henson spoke a few words and led the new initiates in the pledge to instill all the foundations of Xi Psi Phi into our new members. In the end, the new initiates understood all of Xi Psi Phi’s morals and delightedly took the oath. To continue the celebration, the night ended by all ZIP members meeting the new initiates at Jerry Lee Lewis’ Café. Apart from growing our chapter this semester, many executive members have been hard at work on planning fundraisers, events, and alumni relations. Secretary Morgan White and fundraising chair Thomas Butler designed a t-shirt to help our chapter raise money. The t-shirt featured the Memphis skyline and was a huge success considering over 200 XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

shirts were sold and we even had to open a second order to meet the high demand! Thomas has also been working on our Alumni newsletter to send out to those who are interested in staying involved in our chapter. Many alumni responded to our outreach last year and opted to receive updates with what is going on with our chapter & school via email. Our alumni program is still a work in progress. Our executive team is still working on getting the correct contact information for many, but overall, we have gotten in contact with and received much support from alumni since we started this program a year ago! We’re so thankful for our alumni that want to be involved and we can’t wait to see how the involvement grows in the years to come. Outside of school, many ZIP members have filled their time over the past months staying active and traveling to serve others. This fall some D3 and D2 ZIPs formed an intramural soccer team. Through a rough season, they managed to end it with a championship win. In June of this year, multiple D4 and D3 members joined in with the BCM organization on a trip to Ecuador for a week to minister and serve over 500 residents there with free dental care. Others

have joined in with the Remote Area Medical to serve individuals in our state of Tennessee on weekends throughout this semester. We are so grateful for chapter members that devote themselves to serving others and staying aware of their own health in order to do so. As always, this fall semester has flown by. It’s so rewarding to see the outcome of our hard work. We are very excited to see what our new members provide to our chapter in the upcoming years. Bring on Spring 2020! hat a year it has been serving as President of ZIPS thus far! It has been such a rewarding and fun experience getting to know our new members, building life-long friendships and being a mentor to so many of our fraternity members. APRIL In preparation for the new school year, every year in April we host our school’s Rush Week! For 3 nights, all 3 fraternities host an event for the D1s to come get to know each frat and for us to get to know them. For even more fun, each night has a theme – and this year ZIPS chose “ZIPping Through the Past.” With this theme, people were able to dress up from cavemen to Egyptian princesses to disco dancers! Very shortly after our rush event, ZIPS members had the pleasure of selecting our new members for 2019! ZIPS gained 24 members to its family and we could not be more excited to rush such a friendly, diverse and driven group of individuals. These lovely members will have their official initiation in March of 2020! MAY It’s our fraternity’s tradition to have our annual Boat Party as a way to welcome our new members into ZIPS. This year we went to Lake Lewisville near Dallas. SEPTEMBER One weekend in September, we had a social called Margarita Mile! It was a super fun opportunity to get to hang out with our members outside of school and try different margaritas around Dallas. OCTOBER Our ZIPS members not only love to have fun, but we love to serve our community. This year we had the

great privilege of getting to volunteer at Allen Saxe Dental Clinic. It was great to give back to those in need and work with faculty outside of our school clinic. During this volunteer opportunity, our members got to perform a lot of operative procedures and extractions for those in need around the community. As this semester is coming to an end, we had our Tri-Fraternity Halloween party where all 3 fraternities at our school come together and get spooky! Not to be biased, but two of our D2 ZIPS members took the cake on best costume of the night with their recreation of High School Musical’s Sharpey and Ryan. Fun fact: the real Ashley Tisdale posted their photo on her Instagram! NOVEMBER After a long semester of school, ZIPS celebrated our thankfulness at our annual “Friendsgiving.” Our D2 members have been working in the Sim Lab, learning many skills that they will apply to their future patients. D3s have been in the clinic now since June and finally getting to work on real patients. D4s are beginning to get board certified and taking their CTP exams. There are so many things our ZIPS have to be thankful for as future dentists! We are all very thankful we get to serve XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

the community in such a wonderful profession. This is a photo of last year’s ZIPS president and vice president, (left) Debbie and Riley and our current president and vice president, (right) Eli and Matthew. Debbie and Riley have been such a great support system and helpful mentors to Matt and me! We can go to them for any questions we have about ZIPS, clinic or life advice. We will miss them so much when they graduate next year! Riley will be going on to an AEGD program while Debbie will become an orthodontic resident at our school next year. We have so many more fun events planned for the spring and we can’t wait to continue to grow closer as a ZIPS family and rush our new members of 2020! By President Eli Meyer

and multiple first year dental students came. Following thi event was a volunteering activity at the Ronald McDonald House, a nonprofit that provide medical and social services for families with children that receive ongoing care at Houston hospitals. The club members baked chocolate chip cookies and played games and activitie with the children. Through the process of socializing with families and staff, members had th opportunity to learn about the ongoing work of the organization. The event was such a hug success that Xi Psi Phi was invited to come back. On October 6th, Xi Phi Psi held its first ever self-initiated ceremony for new inductees The officers carried out the ceremony and a former alumni of Xi Phi Psi, Dr. S.Jerry Long DDS shared words of wisdom regarding clinical experience in dental school and in private practice with the inductees and current members. A goal for next year’s activities is to give back to our school’s staff and patien population. For instance, the fraternity hopes to provide a welcome/ hospitality week for urgen care patients. The club has plans for other service and social activities this upcoming year Alpha Psi chapter has grown to twenty nine active members. An election will allow first an second year students to rise in leadership and commitment to the club. Xi Psi Phi remain dedicated to interacting with local nonprofits and service-oriented organizations in the loca community, strengthening bonds amongst current members, and training the next generation of students to take over the reins of the fraternity and its mission to the community.

At this event, our members packed meals to be sent to undernourished children across the world. We followed that up with our first bowling social of the year where our members “struck” up fun conversations and “spared” no pins! Our chapter continued strong during our August Break as our chapter hosted our inaugural mission trip to Jamaica! YA MON! Additionally, our members were able to enjoy the beach and some amazing jamaican jerk chicken during their free time with their all inclusive stay at the Sandals Resort Montego Bay. Overall it was an amazing experience for everyone involved and it couldn’t have happened without the amazing leadership and planning of our past president, Ashley Lau. Come the start of the fall quarter, with help from our new social coordinators, Mark Wang and Vincent Truong, we unveiled a new slew of RUSH events such as Mediterranean Monday, our ever successful bowling social and Yard house kickback social. Lastly, in the spirit of the holiday season, our chapter tabled in the MWU Halloween Fest, where our volunteers helped kids in the area celebrate Halloween with different activities such as playing Operations. Having survived a busy fall quarter and our first snow of the year, to wrap up the year, we plan on hosting our annual white elephant christmas party. he Fall 2019 semester has been quite eventful for the Chi chapter of Xi Psi Phi! This semester we were excited to welcome 47 new members to our fraternity and are looking forward to helping them throughout their careers. Our members have been busy with social events and preclinical help labs that we hold monthly. These help labs allow our third and fourth-year dental students to assist the first and second-year students with their lab projects and also prepare them for their upcoming practicals. Our first-year students have been busy learning about tooth morphology and have learned to wax teeth. Our second-year students have been working meticulously on performing operative procedures on the maxillary arch as well as learning how to prepare crowns and bridges for fixed prosthodontic procedures. Our ZIPS members have been able to enjoy time together outside the school through happy hours and our annual Halloween party. Our Halloween party was a huge success as almost our entire student population attended the event. Students were

social events that ZIP has to offer. Much work was put in by our senior members to make the chapter house a true glow-in-the-dark experience, and a fun time was had by all. Equally important are the academic events that we have to offer, and our alwayspopular Dental Anatomy Mock Bellringer event for first year students was no different. With the help of ZIP alumni, our 2nd year academic representative ran this invaluable event, allowing first year students to test their knowledge in advance

We also hosted our first “Alumni Spotlight” event, where ZIP alumnus Dr. Marszowski talked about his experience working in rural Ontario, and new technologies he has successfully incorporated into his practice. Right after the midterm season, Omicron chapter hosted its highly anticipated annual Halloween party. Members came dressed in all kinds of creative costumes, and enjoyed a night filled with fun and dancing. To cap off the semester, Omicron

chapter hosted a “Stress-Buster” and financial planning seminar, thanks to chapter sponsor CDSPI. Not only was it an opportunity for members to take a break from their busy school schedules, but it was also an informative talk for all. Dr. Chad P. Gehani, Beta ’73 of Queens, New York, was installed on Sept. 9 as the 156th president of the American Dental Association during ADA FDI World Dental Congress in San Francisco. During his address to the House of Delegates, Dr. Gehani told members it is his “responsibility to ensure that the ADA remains the guardian of your life commitment to the profession — and I am not just talking about your dues dollars. The ADA must be a responsible custodian of your time as volunteers and of your talents as clinicians, researchers and educators. “The ADA must be relevant to all of us,” he said.

Dr. Chad P. Gehani, Beta ’73 of Queens, New York.

Estate Planning

Giving Back to Xi Psi Phi Foundation

our will is the easiest, most effective way to ensure that your family, friends and the Xi Psi Phi Foundation are supported as you intend. Sample bequest language is “I give, devise and bequeath (written amount, percentage of estate or description of property) to the Xi Psi Phi Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation with principal offices located at 160 S. Bellwood Drive, Suite Z, East Alton, Illinois, 62024, to be used for the purposes designated by the Directors of the Foundation.” Supporting the Xi Psi Phi Foundation with a portion of your estate does not always require a will. Here are some other options for you to consider: Life Insurance: Name the Xi Psi Phi Foundation as owner and beneficiary of a policy you no longer need, or a policy written for the purpose of a charitable gift. The gift will take place outside of probate, the often time-consuming and costly process of determining the validity of a will and administering the estate. Retirement Plan: Give the Xi Psi Phi Foundation

18  |  Volume 116, Issue 1

a portion or all of your IRA, 401(k), Keough or other retirement plan fund from your estate. These types of assts, when used a charitable gifts, avoid income and estate taxes; all that is required is signing the right form, and no probate is involved. Payable-upon-Death Account: Leave checking accounts, savings accounts, saving bonds and other deposit certificates to the Xi Psi Phi Foundation. The gift can be easily accomplished by simply filling out the appropriate form; the asset will be transferred at your death. Your attorney, tax professional or financial advisor can provide details about other ways to support the Xi Psi Phi Foundation outside of your will. Your thoughtful planning leaves a legacy to inspire the future members of Xi Psi Phi. Please contact Keith Dickey, Secretary-Treasurer, Xi Psi Phi Foundation, XIPHIPHI@hotmail.com, if you have already made plans to include Xi Psi Phi Foundation in your estate planning.
