I
t is truly a pleasure and honor to serve as you President for the next biennium. It is an honor to follow the great Presidents of the past. My term did not start off as I and the Board had wished. After extensive planning for the annual convocation in Dallas the nation was shut down secondary to the spread of COVID-19 This infectious disease has had a significant impact on all of us; alumni in their practices, students trying to get into the clinic and our elderly alumni who need to be especially cautious with this disease. I have a hard time understanding the concept of a “new normal,” this is definitely not normal. Normal is when our members can gather for friendship and fellowship and provide the necessary mentoring our newer members need. I have all the faith in our scientist and physicians to neutralize this infectious disease sooner than later.
Hopefully in the very near future this disease will be under control and our Xi Psi Phi members can once again gather in the name of this great fraternity for friendship and fellowship. We need to remain resilient through these troubling times so the “old normal” can be reestablished. If there is anything that the supreme chapter can do for you please let us know, we are here to serve our member chapters.

I
n the after math of Covid-19 so many changes have occurred. Dentistry, which has always practiced universal precautions, yet has many new protocols to follow. For Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity, like many other organizations, we too have been greatly affected as well. With dental schools having to operate with distance learning how can our fraternity reach out to new members?? We are realizing how important it is to continue human contact in maintaining an organization like ours. I think we are all craving the human, face to face interaction which is not possible for our safety at this time. Many chapters have suffered in gaining new members due to this fact. Students are feeling more and more isolated and are seeking the necessary interaction for our profession, as well as our organization. Many chapters are attempting to sustain members with Zoom meetings and other alternatives.
Post COVID-19 will not be easy and we are unlikely to return to pre-COVID-19 ways anytime soon, so we will have to embrace change and adapt to our new reality. Zips will find a way to overcome and will gain strength in time. In the meantime please pay your dues and for those who can please contribute to our fraternity so we can maintain and overcome this hurdle.

Arthur A Dugoni, DDS
P
alo Alto, Calif. — Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, who led the University of the Pacific’s school of dentistry for 28 years as dean and was ADA president from 1988-89, died Sept. 23 at his home in Palo Alto, California, from cancer. He was 95. The University of Pacific’s dental school was named the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in his honor in 2004. He became the first and only person in the United States or Canada to have a dental school named in their honor while holding the position of dean, according to a memoriam on the university’s website. Dr. Dugoni graduated from the University of Pacific in San Francisco in 1948, and he was a member of the Alpha Phi chapter of the Xi
Psi Phi Dental Fraternity. Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Dugoni was awarded the Joseph J. Schwarz Distinguished Alumni Award award in 2014. This award is given to honor and recognize alumni, like Dr. Dugoni, for their significant contributions to society and dentistry, as well as those accomplishments, affiliations, and careers that have honored the 125 years of tradition of excellence of Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity. The countless awards and citations he received throughout his career includes his election to the prestigious FDI World Dental Federation List of Honour in 1998, which is limited to 30 individuals worldwide, and the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He has also received Distinguished Alumni
Awards from four universities. Dr. Dugoni has presented more than 1,000 lectures, papers, clinics and essays, is the author of more than 175 published articles, and is the subject of a biography, “Quest for Excellence: The Arthur A. Dugoni Story.” Dr. Dugoni’s remarkable life and leadership inspired countless dental students, residents, faculty and staff, to pursue their passion for oral healthcare education and practice, leading to the improvement of the lives of millions. As his memoriam at the UOP website his oft-quoted mantra was, “At Pacific we grow people, and along the way they become doctors.”

COLLEGE CHAPTER REPORTS
ALPHA OMICRON CHAPTER University of Tennessee Health Science Center Memphis, TN – Founded 1921 Taylor Rogers Editor/Social Media Chair PRE-PANDEMIC
T
he Spring 2020 semester started as fiery as every other semester for us. We got things rolling for our annual event, ZIP Idol, that is hosted at The Bluff in Memphis every February. This specific event is so special to us because we get the chance to allow our faculty & student musicians to put on a show, and we get to donate the proceeds to a great charity, The Boys & Girls Club of Memphis. Every year this event grows, but that would be an understatement for this year. This year, we had 10 performances: from bands, to solos, to even dancing routines. Our D1 ZIP members put a band together at the last minute, and they blew everyone away. The talent that students & faculty show off is amazing, and it is truly a great event to let us all take the night off from dentistry. We are very thankful for everyone that plans, participates, & supports ZIP Idol. Once again, this year the big student band, “The Lingual Groove,” was asked to come back and play a gig at The Bluff in May for graduation . . . plans were rolling, until the coronavirus hit. Another big event that many of members look forward to every year is Mission of Mercy hosted by Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis. Our dental school proudly allows us to take off of clinic to help serve at Mission of Mercy on the Friday of the weekend it’s scheduled for every January. Nearly all faculty & students of the dental school volunteer their time at this event to help bring free dental to the underserved community of Memphis. The organization released XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

that 2,069 patients were seen this year, amounting to $1.4 million in dental care. UTHSC College of Dentistry and many ZIP members were huge contributors to these numbers, and we can’t wait to do it all over again next year!

our school and within our chapter. Others still would rather receive a hard-copy, and there are many we are still trying to touch base with. As it has been for the past year, our alumni relations is growing, and we are so very grateful. It takes a village to keep a chapter such as ours running at high velocity and to be able to do multiple events. Our plan this year was to, once again, hand-deliver the newsletters to the alumni that still practice around Memphis. Our executive board planned to do this when we returned back from spring break in March. . . . but instead the coronavirus prevented this too. It is disheartening to write this article this year knowing there are a lot of things our chapter, as well as other chapters, had to postpone due to the coronavirus. The Senior Send-off

Celebration, delivering alumni newsletters, and the annual crawfish boil all had to be put on hold. At this time, we are still trying to come up with a way to honor our D4 members, even if it something as small as mailing them their certificates and including a little something to honor their membership. They deserve to have a reminder of the outlet ZIPs brought to dental school. We are very proud of our D4’s and the legacy they have left at our school. We had 44 ZIP members in the Class of 2020, and 17 of those members have committed to post-graduate programs ranging from Pediatrics, Oral Surgery, Developmental Dentistry, Orthodontics, and GPR/AEGDs. Apart from the pandemic of the coronavirus putting dental school on hold for the remainder of Spring 2020, our executive council has not ceased conspiring together to the make the fall a success. We are looking forward to welcoming the Class of 2024, even if it different from our traditional Rush week. In the meantime, we are all trying to stay safe & sane while learning dentistry remotely, and we hope everyone else is too!
or the 2019 to 2020 school year, the Xi Psi Phi organization continued its dedication to community engagement and fostering relationships amongst students. On February 15th, members of Xi Psi Phi went to Casa de Esperanza, a nonprofit for at risk children who have experienced neglect or abuse. At this center, the children live in a safe environment where they are emotionally cared for, protected, and given nutritious meals. Xi Psi Phi members created activities for the toddlers such as blowing balloons or giving them rides in toy wagons. It was a memorable and educational experience for the fraternity as members got the opportunity to learn about how different institutions (shelters, hospitals, families, and social services) interact to provide a safe, comfortable space for the children. As a means to unify the group, Xi Psi Phi organized a game night on March 4th where fraternity members played games and socialized. In addition, on March 11th, members of Xi Psi Phi assisted with screenings for the Give Kids a Smile Event, which was later canceled due to Coronavirus outbreak. Unfortunately,for the same reason, the organization was not able to host a third activity in the semester. However, the organization is hard at work to plan social and volunteering opportunities while still respecting CDC guidelines that aim to reduce disease transmission. For the upcoming school year, there will be elections to allow first and second year students the chance to rise to leadership positions and set goals for the fraternity in the future. Senior members graduated in May, and though their contributions to the organization will be missed, the fraternity wishes these members success in their new dental careers.
BETA OMICRON CHAPTER Midwestern University Downers Grove, Illinois Founded 2017 Jerry Le President

ey everyone, Beta Omicron checking in again! The start of 2020 has been pretty crazy, huh? But even with the pandemic cutting this past semester short, we still managed to get a few events in before all the craziness went down. We started with our annual Zipsmas White Elephant Party, planned by our social chairs, Vincent Truong and Mark Wang. Everyone had a blast as a flurry of gifts were willingly and unwillingly given. It was all in good fun though as we ended 2019 strong! XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

Our social chairs had a strong year in 2019 and they didn’t let up even as 2020 came about. They organized our next big event as football season came to its climax. We held a superbowl watch party at Yard House and provided free food to our members. Everyone had a great time as we didn’t have many 49er fans. Although, it would’ve been fun even if we were. As the football season ended, unbeknownst to us at the time, soon so was our time at school. But before it did we snuck in one more event in our Extractions 101 event with Midwestern University’s very own Dr. Ken Kadziela. The event was super helpful, especially to our underclassmen for whom there are no simulations when it comes to the fine art of extracting a tooth. And with that, our winter quarter finally did come to a close.
With the start of spring came the outbreak of COVID-19. Our campuses were closed down and all student events were canceled. That hindered our plans for sure but it didn’t slow us down for long! Our didactics team, led by Saarah Khan and Marisa Chanin, hosted an online specialty Q&A event, giving insight into the application process for residencies by asking our graduating 4th years who had been accepted into programs themselves. All over Zoom! Isn’t technology cool? That concludes our crazy 2 quarters and the first half of 2020. We hope that the worst is over and the second half of this year will be better than the first. OMICRON CHAPTER University of Toronto Toronto, Ontario Canada Founded 1899 Spring 2020 University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry Stephanie Silva Chapter Editor
O
micron Chapter started the year off strong with the annual Xi Psi Phi formal gala on January 18, 2020. This year, the theme for the event was “A Touch of Gold,” hosted at the historic Arcadian Court in Toronto. The formal reached capacity quickly, with a total of 330 ZIP members, alumni, and their guests in attendance. The night was certainly one to remember, filled with new memories, delicious food, exciting giveaways and lots of dancing. This year, we presented ZIP awards to some of our D4’s, without whom our chapter would not be able to run so smoothly. The awards included: the Partridge-Luks Award for the ZIP member who combines fraternal contribution with scholastics and extracurricular activity, the Culbert and Shanks Award for a member with outstanding contributions to the fraternity, the Athletic Award, and the Bone and Devo Award for the member who makes the most out of their fraternity experience. This semester, Omicron Chapter hosted some exciting extracurricular events to help prepare its members for life outside of dental school. Thanks in large part to our generous sponsors, members had the opportunity to visit Dentalcorp headquarters in late January for an informative presentation about corporate dentistry. There, they had the chance to network and explore career opportunities postgraduation. Also in January, D4 ZIP members attended a series of prep courses to help them prepare for the

Canadian Board exams that were to be written in early March. The courses were generously hosted by ZIP alumnus, Dr. Marwan Al Rayes (Class of 2009) of Prep Doctors. In mid-March, Omicron Chapter was preparing for the annual variety show, Dentantics. The show raises funds for our school’s foundation, Access to Care, which helps fund life-changing dental treatment for patients exhibiting financial need. ZIP members work hard throughout the year with after school practices, and have a week of long dress rehearsals to put together the final touches for the big two-night spectacle. Unfortunately, on March 12th (the day of the first show), the difficult decision was made to cancel the event in light of the growing COVID19 pandemic. On March 13th, as the situation continued to escalate in Toronto, the Dean of the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry made the difficult decision to cancel all in person academic activities and clinics, with the exception of emergencies, until the COVID-19 pandemic resolved. This unfortunately also meant the cancellation of a few ZIP events that had been XI PSI PHI QUARTERLY

planned for the end of the semester, in an effort to slow the spread of the virus in line with recommendations from our province’s Chief Medical Officer. These events included: academic seminars, our annual endof-year pig roast, convocation and graduation for the D4’s. Thankfully, our school was able to transition quickly, conducting the remainder of academic testing remotely in order to
keep all students on track. While the COVID-19 pandemic has caused much uncertainty regarding the next few months, ZIP members at the Omicron Chapter remain strong and united in the face of what’s to come. Once life returns to a “new normal,” rest assured that Omicron Chapter will find a way to come together to celebrate another successful academic year! Volume 116, Issue 2 | 9

BETA NU CHAPTER SUNY Stony Brook, New York Cyril V. Manchery Chapter Editor
O
ver the course of this past year, the Beta Nu chapter at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine has focused much of its efforts toward education and philanthropy. The fraternity has been known to host very intuitive, interactive, and engaging dinner and learns for the students at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. One of the first events was an event with the West Shore Financial group. We brought a financial advisor to help dental students learn more about the financial side of dentistry. We felt it was important to expose the student body to concepts that are often not touched upon in dental school. Following this event, we held a dinner and learn with Dr. Calderon. This doctor is the founder of an implant CE course. He lectured not only about implants and their clinical implications but gave advice about practice ownership as well. Both of these events were huge successes at Stony Brook Dental. There was great feedback from the student body. One of our biggest events was our annual Ugly Christmas Sweater party. In the season of giving, the Beta Nu chapter teamed up with Operation Smile and donated all proceeds from our open bar extravaganza toward children who needed cleft lip and palate surgery. Beyond this many of our members have participated in a variety of outreach trips both local and international. Under the leadership of our presidents Cyril and Jason and our amazing Eboard, we have been very proud to represent the Beta Nu Chapter at Stony Brook and are very proud of our accomplishments this year and hope that next year brings even greater success.

IOTA CHAPTER University of California, San Francisco San Francisco, California Founded 1894 Elliott Pereira Chapter Editor
T
o start off our winter quarter this past school year, the Iota Chapter of Xi Psi Phi at the University of California, San Francisco held our annual Tahoe trip. For the adventurous, activities involved skiing and snowboarding, while for the more relaxed, tubing and snowball fights were to be had. With both groups, however, there was much eating, socializing, and memories that were created! On March 6th, our chapter held the annual ZIPS Winter Speaker Dinner. This year our keynote speakers were Dr. Jennifer Perkins who is Executive Director of Clinical Education for the School of Dentistry predoctoral program, Dr. Jason Kwok, and Dr. Antonio Diaz. Both Dr. Kwok and Dr. Diaz were recent graduates of UCSF’s Endodontics Graduate Program. All three speakers were outstanding as they gave insightful speeches on their dental journeys and life stories. Along with this, we had our annual 50/50 raffle which has always been a hit. With this dinner, we wrapped up our quarter and our previous year for ZIPS. We hope that everyone is staying safe during these times, and we hope that our photos from the past year can spark joy!

I just wanted to thank the scholarship committee of Xi Psi Phi on being accepted for the Reynold and Vivian Foutz Scholarship. This is such an honor and I am so lucky to be a part of such an amazing dental fraternity. My name is Megan Casserly and I am a 24-yr. old from St. Louis, Missouri. All of my immediate family lives in St. Louis and they are all amazing and extremely supportive of my dental school journey. One of the main reasons I sought interest in dentistry is because my grandpa and great-grandpa were both a part of the dental field in the Navy. I went to Marquette High school in Chesterfield, Missouri and was a very busy, motivated teenager. I was involved a lot in orchestra, cross country, soccer, and community service organizations. From there, I chose to go to Truman State University in northern Missouri to get my undergraduate degree in Biology. At Truman, I was heavily involved in community service and had the amazing opportunity to play varsity soccer there. Once I set my mind on going to dental school, it became my dream to go to the UMKC School of Dentistry and now here we are! While dental school is very busy, I still find time for my hobbies which include volunteering at my church, soccer, and playing the violin. I also am heavily involved in running and just completed my first full marathon. After dental school, I plan on going through an AEGD program and hope to own my own practice one day. By doing this I can get my office involved a lot in the community and go on dental mission trips to help those in need.
I was born and raised in London Ontario where I graduated with honours from a French high school. I then pursued the Biomedical Sciences program at the University of Ottawa graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2016. I am currently a 4th year dental student at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry and a proud member of Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity. In my undergraduate studies, I worked and published two publications on Canadian Pediatric Sleep Resources and Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy. I also was awarded a scholarship to pursue research at the Institute of Nanotechnology in Lyon, France to do research on Cystic Fibrosis for 3 months. I was the president of club called Students Offering Support. This club raised $50000 through tutoring students to donate to sustainable education projects in Latin America. I had the chance to follow the money raised and see it transformed into two different schools in Guatemala and Peru. This is where my love for outreach was sparked and started to develop. After entering dental school, I knew I wanted to pursue outreach as well. In my third year of dental school, I went on a dental mission’s trip to Grenada to provide dental care to the underprivileged. Prior to this, I was aware that there were insufficient oral health care resources, but this fact became a reality when I personally faced a room full of hundreds of patients in need. This is where I developed an understanding for the necessity of oral health care in lowincome communities. It was there that I learned about how dental care disparities don’t just exist in Canada but also exist in other places. In January, I was selected as one of four students to represent the Faculty of Dentistry in the Dominican Republic providing dental care to a rural community. This was a rewarding trip as we were able to bring dental care to a community that does not have access to a dentist. In the future, I hope to continue pursuing opportunities like this to share my dental skills with

r. Paul Morgan, Omicron ’64 was a leading Zip guy and mentor to everyone who was tragically murdered in his home on April 14, 2020 Known to those in his circle as “Doc” Morgan, he used his earnings as a top Toronto oral surgeon to support the less fortunate. For decades, “Doc” Morgan opened up his North York home to a diverse group of youths, many of them Indigenous artists and musicians, including some who had been in trouble with the law. Paul was Educated at De La Salle College, UTS and U of T ‘ 64 Dental School; post graduate studies at the
Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minn. and then joined the staff of the University of Minnesota (1968-72). He was a member of Project Hope ’71 in Kingston, Jamaica prior to returning home to Toronto to open a private practice in Oral Surgery. Paul later supervised Oral Surgical Programs for Dental Interns at the Toronto Western Hospital: Chief of Dentistry at North York General Hospital, an Associate Professor of Oral Surgery at U of T (1972-84), and a past president (1988) of the Oral Surgery Alumnae at the Mayo Clinic. He was the recipient of the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. Angela Benedict is seen here with her longtime friend Dr. Paul Morgan after she graduated with a Masters’ degree in education from Lakehead University in 2016. “There will never be another person like Doc, the goodness he had and the warmth he exuded,” a heartbroken Angela Benedict told the Toronto Sun.
STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS continued those who need it the most not only internationally but also locally. Currently, I am involved in Dental school clubs and programs including Prosthodontic Mentoring, Midweek Boost and Oral Health Total Health. In my spare time, I am an open water PADI diver and am certified with my
Level 1 Wine Foundations Certification. I have been fortunate to win a few awards in the last few years including; the Margaret and Clifford Zettle Award (2019), Robert B Dunlop Award (2018) and Gina Furtado Award (2017), and the Tomkin’s Family Award (2017).

Estate Planning Giving Back to Xi Psi Phi Foundation

our will is the easiest, most effective way to ensure that your family, friends and the Xi Psi Phi Foundation are supported as you intend. Sample bequest language is “I give, devise and bequeath (written amount, percentage of estate or description of property) to the Xi Psi Phi Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation with principal offices located at 160 S. Bellwood Drive, Suite Z, East Alton, Illinois, 62024, to be used for the purposes designated by the Directors of the Foundation.” Supporting the Xi Psi Phi Foundation with a portion of your estate does not always require a will. Here are some other options for you to consider: Life Insurance: Name the Xi Psi Phi Foundation as owner and beneficiary of a policy you no longer need, or a policy written for the purpose of a charitable gift. The gift will take place outside of probate, the often time-consuming and costly process of determining the validity of a will and administering the estate.

Retirement Plan: Give the Xi Psi Phi Foundation a portion or all of your IRA, 401(k), Keough or other retirement plan fund from your estate. These types of assts, when used a charitable gifts, avoid income and estate taxes; all that is required is signing the right form, and no probate is involved. Payable-upon-Death Account: Leave checking accounts, savings accounts, saving bonds and other deposit certificates to the Xi Psi Phi Foundation. The gift can be easily accomplished by simply filling out the appropriate form; the asset will be transferred at your death. Your attorney, tax professional or financial advisor can provide details about other ways to support the Xi Psi Phi Foundation outside of your will. Your thoughtful planning leaves a legacy to inspire the future members of Xi Psi Phi.
