What’s on Your Wall? Back in the day when one walked into our elementary or our local grammar school classroom on the first day of school, they were greeted by an old chalkboard or maybe a white board complete with scented markers. Perhaps for some younger Hawks, it was a then state of the art Smart Board. That certainly wasn’t the case this past fall when our third and fourth graders entered their new classroom. Not only were they greeted by a new teacher but by a surprise package on the wall in the form of brand new Promethean Boards. While the name may sound intimidating or mysterious, a Promethean Board is a specific brand of interactive whiteboard that allows you to project an image from a laptop or computer. In addition, anything that can be done on a computer monitor can be replicated and viewable by an entire classroom. You can also interact with the board through touch or specialized pen. These boards have proven to increase student engagement, stimulate learning and boost achievement. Many classroom applications for using the boards include:
• Multimedia lessons and presentations including both audio and video • Collaborative problem solving
• Showcasing student projects and presentations • Virtual trips
• Recorded lessons that can be used for students not present and substitute teachers • Documentation of student achievement
Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, all elementary classrooms kindergarten through fourth grade will be upgraded beginning in August 2020. The system goal is to also upgrade all 5th grade classrooms and science and math classrooms at the middle school by 2021.

“The versatility that the Promethean Board has brought to teaching and learning in my classroom is the greatest asset. I love that I can project textbooks to mark up, project student work to share with the class, model activities, access textbook websites for all to see, lessons can be recorded for future teaching or absent students, the possibilities are endless. I would be lost in the classroom without it!” -Mrs. Katy Masak (below)
