Dear Xavier Catholic Schools Community,
As we celebrate another year through the inspirational stories and amazing photos of X: The Xavier Magazine, I find myself reflecting on what we have shared together. It is with immense gratitude and hopeful anticipation that I pen this letter to you – students, parents, faculty, staff, and accomplished alumni – on behalf of the Board of Trustees.
First, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to you all. To our Xavier students, your curiosity, creativity, and commitment to learning are our true inspiration. You are not just learners of academic subjects but thoughtful, compassionate believers who embody the values we hold firm in our Catholic faith. Continue to embrace both the ordinary and extraordinary moments of school life that make every day an adventure.
To our families, your unwavering support is the backbone of our community. Your partnership in education, your trust in our mission, and your active participation in school events fortify our collective spirit. You prove that education is at its best a shared endeavor, rooted in love and faith.
To our faculty and staff, words cannot capture the depth of our appreciation for your dedication. You are the heart of our schools, nurturing not just minds but souls. Your innovative teaching, patience, and pastoral care transform our schools into places where every student can feel valued and achieve greatness. Your commitment to our Catholic identity, through both curriculum and example, are unparalleled.
We are also deeply thankful to our Xavier alumni, who through their example, inspire current students with their achievements. Your successes are a testament to the foundation laid here, and your continued involvement speaks volumes of the enduring bonds you share. You are forever welcome at Xavier.
This year has not been without its challenges, yet together, we will continue to navigate through them with resilience and grace. As we look forward, we are filled with hope. Hope for our students who will continue to grow in wisdom and grace, and hope for our community, which stands united in faith.
We look to the future with the knowledge that Xavier Catholic Schools are not just places of academic excellence and rigor, but sanctuaries where faith and hope are lived daily. Help us continue to foster an environment where each student is encouraged to reach their potential, and where we serve others with humility.
As you enjoy the news and memories found in this issue, may the joy of Xavier Catholic Schools fill your hearts. Let's remember that each day offers a new opportunity to learn, to grow, and to make a positive impact. Together, help us look forward with optimism, knowing that with our faith in Christ as our guide, we can achieve great things.
Thank you for being part of the Xavier community. May God continue to bless our schools, our students and alumni, and our faculty and staff.
Live Jesus in our Hearts, Forever.

This fall the Xavier Alumni Office had the pleasure of catching up with Thayer Juergens ’09. Thayer shared insights into his journey since leaving Xavier, reflecting on his educational and career paths as well as his current endeavors. Here’s a summary of the conversation:
Where did life take you upon your graduation from Xavier?
After graduating from Xavier, I went to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where I triple-majored in Theater, English, and Political Science. While the university is known as a biomedical engineering school, it also has a small yet strong liberal arts program that allowed me to explore my interests.
How did your career develop?
Once I graduated, I attended a summer intensive program at the University of California’s School of Cinematic Arts to learn about sitcom writing. I had leaned heavily into comedy during college and knew I wanted to pivot into entertainment. This program gave me an excellent opportunity to experience Los Angeles for the first time and learn about the industry.
Afterwards, I made the bold move to New York City. Moving there had always been a dream of mine, even though Los Angeles might have been a faster path to success careerwise. Honestly, it was tough at first to get my foot in the door. I worked a variety of odd jobs—waiter, barista, and even briefly as a telemarketer.
Entertainment doesn’t follow a strictly linear path, so I relied on a lot of cold calls to production companies, late-night shows, and temp jobs at networks until I got my break. A significant turning point was securing a free internship at a production company. It allowed me to call myself a “Development Coordinator,” which is an entry-level job title in Hollywood. In such a competitive industry, having any title or prior experience makes it much easier to get interviews. That internship helped me land my first full-time role at 30 Rock, working in the print marketing department for the Oxygen channel. It wasn’t the type of content I was passionate about, but every opportunity to work in the industry is invaluable. That role opened more doors for me. Eventually, I pivoted to HBO, where I worked for several
years on marketing campaigns for shows that were more in line with my interests. These ranged from Game of Thrones to Westworld to Silicon Valley.
In 2016, I had a realization: I didn’t just want to work on other people’s projects—I wanted to create something of my own. A close friend from Case Western had studied at the American Film Institute (AFI) in Los Angeles, and their experience inspired me to apply. It was a big leap of faith. I applied to AFI and sublet my apartment in the same week to save money. Thankfully, I was accepted, because I’d have been in a real bind if I hadn’t!
AFI was an incredible experience and everything I had hoped to gain from a graduate program. It’s a rigorous, hands-on conservatory where you learn by making films week after week, mastering every aspect of filmmaking enrolled in their producing track, which turned out to be the perfect fit. Producing touches every aspect of a movie— from finding the material and working on the script with the writer to casting, filming, editing, and delivering the final product to audiences.
Upon graduating from AFI, I joined Millennium Media, the studio behind films like the Has Fallen and Expendables franchises, as an assistant to the company’s presidents. After that I worked at a company that was part of Blumhouse where I became an executive working with a showrunner and then a director of development. Horror is my favorite genre so that was an incredibly exciting opportunity!
Right now, I’m the Head of Development for A Higher Standard, a relatively new sales and production company. My responsibilities include evaluating movie submissions, developing projects, building relationships with talent (directors, writers, and actors), producing films and shows, and finding the right studio or streamer to showcase them. I’m also involved in global sales, which means I get to travel often to secure funding and visit sets.
I actually reconnected with the founder of my company, Jeffrey Greenstein, while working at Millennium Media. It’s fantastic to collaborate with him again at A Higher Standard. I love that our company focuses on creating feel-good, fun entertainment. The world is already scary enough—we aim to give people a chance to escape into quality films. It’s even more rewarding to work with friends who share the same vision. We primarily produce action, comedy, action-comedies, and thrillers, working with actors like Kevin James, Alan Ritchson, Tiffany Haddish, and Isla Fisher. I feel incredibly lucky to work with such great people on projects I genuinely want to watch myself!
Thayer’s journey is a testament to hard work, adaptability, and pursuing one’s passions. He credits the foundation laid by his Xavier teachers and the theater program for influencing his path. Thayer is giving back by mentoring Xavier students interested in the entertainment industry and sharing his experiences through class discussions. Thank you, Thayer, for your generosity and for serving as an inspiring role model to the Xavier community.
The excitement of another successful St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System’s Celebrate took place on Saturday, February 1st at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center. This incredible event is not only Xavier’s largest annual fundraiser, but also a celebration of faith, community, and generosity that make our school system so special.
This event would never be as fabulous as possible without our many volunteers, who pour immeasurable time and energy into making Celebrate a success. From organizing committees to securing auction items, planning logistics, and preparing the event space, your dedication and hard work are essential to bringing this event to life.
Hundreds of hours are invested each year, alongside our Advancement team, through these dedicated souls, so that friends and families of the Xavier community can come together and enjoy, support, and encourage our mission. Celebrate provides critical funding that fills the gap that tuition simply does not cover. Without the giving of their time and talents, none of this would be possible.
This year’s Celebrate was a memorable evening filled with fellowship, fun, and an opportunity to ensure the long-lasting positive impact the system provides for our students during
the school year. Every contribution—from event planning to participation and giving—directly supports our annual budget and ensures Xavier will be ready to provide the exceptional, faithfilled education to our students that all have come to expect. If you have not considered helping in the past, please consider joining this team for future years. Whether you can lend a hand in the final preparations, volunteer during the event, write a check, bid on items in the online auction, or spread the word, your efforts can and do make a difference.
As we tip our hats to our truly amazing volunteers, we also recognize Lisa Pfaff, who coordinated and directed all our Xavier alumni and special events for the last fourteen years. Lisa has spent tireless hours making Celebrate our most profitable fundraiser for the continued growth and opportunities for all of Xavier. Lisa, we wish you all the best as you “Celebrate” new adventures and thank you for all you have given to our community.
Celebrate is more than a fundraiser—it’s a moment for our entire community to come together in support of Xavier’s mission.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Celebrate our best one yet!
Christmas made easy. Wait is that real? Alumni families gathered at Xavier High School on Saturday, Dec. 7th for Cookies with Claus. Peaceful fun around the holidays with the family is about as elusive as a pink unicorn, but for a short while we hope that alumni families that joined us were able to have just that. The magic included:
Family Pics with Santa –Families joined us for photos with no lines, just time slots and a friendly Xavier team that included Santa for a professional family photo.
Gingerbread House Decorating – Do you remember being a child and having a playhouse that was your size? What if the play fort was a gingerbread house made of cardboard and fleece and the candies were big really big - that you could place them wherever your heart desires?
Reindeer Ring Toss – Simple, but oh so fun! Some displayed great patience practicing the art of tossing rings on the reindeer antlers, while some preferred the more concrete option of walking up to the rings and placing them right on.
Cookie Decorating – Children enjoyed decorating angels with great creativity and lots of sprinkles. Maybe a few too many sprinkles. Sorry parents!
Ornament Making – Sometimes time goes a little too fast and the backward “s” or the uninhibited art of childhood slips away. Parents were able to capture a little of this by creating an ornament with their child. This year we decorated wooden angels with fingerprints. Each one was unique just like your child!
Storytime – If there were to be a professional story teller at Xavier my vote would go to Tina Foth. Her love of children has kept her as a valued member of the Xavier Elementary team for many years. With a twinkle in her eyes, she shared books that included her children’s Christmas favorites from home.
Don’t Ring the Bells Game – We believe that thinking skills are important to children, we are a school after all. How can I get through all of the hula hoops without ringing the bells? Hmmm…. some waited for parents to provide advice, others jumped right in, some used trial and error. Learning can be different things to different children.
Scavenger Hunt – Kids are smart. I bet you know that. Top contender for thinking about the scavenger hunt goes to one young man that searched about 200 snowflakes in the theatre lobby to identify the exact snowflake on the sheet.
At Xavier, we are a community each and every day. For those that could join us, we hope that you enjoyed your visit! For those of you looking for a little something like this that did not attend, we would love to welcome you, perhaps next year?

The second graders from the Marquette Campus and the third graders at the McDonald Street Campus spent the month of October working hard on their Saint Projects. Each student researched and answered questions on how they could be like saints, and then they chose one saint to study more in-depth. Many students chose saints they did not know much about to be able to learn more about how their saints devoted their lives to God. Students then created a PowerPoint presentation showcasing all that they had learned about their saint.
As a culminating way to conclude this project, students then showcased their learning by dressing up as their saint for All Saints Day Mass. Afterwards, the students put on a Living Saints Museum for members of our Xavier community and taught others about their saint.
This hands-on project not only deepened the students' understanding of the saints, but also provided them with role models to inspire their own faith and actions.
Cross-curricular activities in elementary school play a crucial role in supporting students' overall development and fostering a love of learning. These activities integrate concepts and skills from multiple subjects, allowing students to make connections between different areas of knowledge and apply what they're learning in a more holistic way.
Recently 4th graders from the Marquette and McDonald St campuses participated in a Monster writing project. This project focused on writing skills, problem solving strategies, collaboration, and engineering skills across multiple weeks.
During this project, students work in groups to build a monster out of recycled materials. They plan out what their monster will look like before building it based on the materials they are provided. After planning their monster, they are given 45 minutes to build their monster based on their plan. When they are done building their original monster, we listen to a story to help brainstorm ideas on how to write directions for building the monster. Next, they write up directions on how to build their monster with their group. Each person in the group focuses on writing about a portion of the building process so that all
students are involved in the writing process. Students use their peer editing skills to make the directions understandable for another group to read and build their monster.
Once the building and writing are complete, the groups from each campus share their writing. Later they use the directions to build the monster. Students use descriptive writing to try and replicate what the other group built.
One of the highlights of this project is the Google meet where students show each other what they have built and discuss. Students take turns discussing and sharing ideas about the monsters that they built.
Some monsters have been saved to be displayed during our STEM night on February 19th at Xavier Middle School. Come see the monsters and other STEM projects or activities that will be showcased.
Xavier Elementary Home and School Association (HSA) held its fifth annual Color Run at Xavier Middle School on September 26th. The evening was lively and colorful, with elementary students, their families, and Frankie the Hawk joining in the excitement! The festivities began with a unique running course set up by the volunteers, while faculty members added splashes of color to the students. The event was concluded with a giant “color blast” in the middle of the field.
The Color Run is a fundraiser for HSA. HSA supports the elementary faculty and staff throughout the year with classroom supplies, conference and in-service meals, appreciation gifts, Thankful Thursdays, treats on holidays, and supports all students with family events throughout the year. A special thank you to our Color Run committee and volunteers. We sincerely appreciate all of you!
On a momentous evening for the Xavier community, the school officially unveiled its newly renovated Rocky Bleier Field on the Knights of Columbus Sports Complex. The dedication, held just prior to the kickoff of Xavier Football’s highly anticipated season opener on August 24th brought together students, families, alumni, and supporters to celebrate this milestone.
The evening began with a private event recognizing the generosity of the major donors who made the project possible. Representatives from Oh Snap!, OSMS-Ascension, Forefront Dermatology, and Miron Construction were honored for their commitment to enhancing Xavier’s athletic facilities. In addition, a special thank you was extended to a group of other dedicated supporters, whose contributions helped turn this vision into a reality.
Later, a short pregame ceremony was hosted by speakers Bob Biebel, the “champion” behind the turf project, Athletic Director Luke Herriges and honorary alum and Hall of Famer, Rocky Bleier ‘64. Together they emphasized the lasting impact the turf field will have on Xavier athletics, providing a state-of-the-art playing surface for football, soccer, and other school events for years to come. The program concluded with
a blessing of the field by Father Ryan Starks, followed by an inspirational performance of our National Anthem by senior student, Victoria Lopez.
Once the game began, the energy carried over as the home crowd eagerly cheered on the Hawks in their inaugural match on the new turf with a resounding 52-12 victory over Valders. The night marked not only a celebration of generosity and progress, but also the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Xavier athletics. The newly turfed Rocky Bleier Field now stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring pride of Xavier High School. And the new field symbolizes the community’s dedication to supporting students both on and off the field, continuing Xavier’s tradition of excellence.
At Xavier Middle School, we believe in giving our students the tools to become global citizens—starting with the power of language. Our middle school Exploratory Language Program introduces students to the rich and diverse worlds of Spanish, French, and German in a fun, hands-on, and immersive way. This program is designed not only to teach the basics of each language but also to open students’ eyes to new cultures, perspectives, and experiences.
In our Exploratory Language Program, 6th grade students are introduced to Spanish, French, and German through engaging lessons that emphasize the joy of learning a new language. From numbers and greetings to colors, cognates, and the alphabet, our students quickly gain a solid foundation in each language. But this program isn’t just about memorizing vocabulary—it’s about exploring the cultures that shape these languages.
Students take a dive into the celebrations, famous people, landmarks, and foods of Spanish, French, and German-speaking countries. They explore the vibrant festivals of Spain, the rich culinary traditions of France, and the historic castles of Germany— all while learning to speak and understand the language. This cultural immersion fosters curiosity and appreciation for the world beyond our borders, laying the groundwork for future global understanding.
The Exploratory Language Program at Xavier Middle School is just the beginning of our students' journey into world languages. By the end of the program in 8th grade, students have a foundational understanding of Spanish, French, and German that prepares them for future language studies and enriches their academic experience. It also gives them the confidence to engage with people from different cultures, whether in the classroom or beyond.
More importantly, it sparks a love of learning languages—an essential skill in today’s interconnected world. In an age where the ability to communicate across cultures is increasingly valuable, our students leave the program not only with new language skills but also with a broader perspective on the world and hopefully a greater feeling of empathy.
As our world continues to become more interconnected, the ability to communicate in more than one language is a powerful skill. The Exploratory Language Program at Xavier serves as a springboard for our students to engage with new cultures, broaden their horizons, and develop the skills they need to thrive in a global society.
We are proud of the enthusiasm and curiosity our students bring to language learning, and we can’t wait to see where their language journeys take them. With continued support from our dedicated teachers, students build the foundation for lifelong learning and cross-cultural understanding.
Thank you for being part of our mission to create well-rounded, globally minded learners, who are ready to take on the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow’s world.
Recent Xavier graduate, Anna Leicht ‘24, has turned a volunteer opportunity into a passionate hobby. Xavier High School has service hour requirements for graduation. As Anna was seeking out ways to accomplish this, she discovered that St. Pius X Church was in need of people to make rosaries for parishioners. Having never made a rosary before, she watched a “how to” YouTube video, and she decided to give it a try. Anna said, “At first it was a little tricky when I was learning how to make them, and it took me about 45 minutes to make just one.” Once she got the hang of it, she could make a complete rosary in about 15 minutes.
When Anna had finished the initial amount of rosaries that St. Pius X had requested, she found herself wanting to make more. When asked why, she replied, “I found it to be peaceful and almost meditative as I made them.” Anna eventually invested in many spools of rosary twine and took it upon herself to make them for her family and friends. Anna performed in the Passion Play at Xavier’s Fine Arts Theatre, and she thought that giving a rosary to each member of the cast and crew was a nice way to say thank you for all of the hard work they put into the production.
Anna’s new pastime has produced over 400 handmade rosaries. This fall she received a request from Mrs. Burton and Mrs. Mares, second grade teachers at Xavier’s Marquette Street campus, to make a rosary for each student. The teachers wanted the students to be able to pray with them during the Living Rosary that is held several times a year. Anna happily took on the job, and she came home from Madison, where she attends college, to explain to the students how and why she makes the rosaries. She said, “I was so happy that I could return to my elementary school and give these students a special gift, especially seeing as they will be making their First Communion this year.”
When asked what the best part of discovering this new passion is, Anna replied, “I feel like I have definitely grown closer to God, and I love being able to give back to the community.” She also said it is nice to continue to be involved with Xavier, feeling like she still has a connection to her alma mater.
We thank Anna for sharing her passion and rosary-making skills with current Xavier students.
“Theology 12: Service Learning” was a new course offered this past fall for senior students. The course explored the reasons and methods behind service and helped students identify their individual and collective strengths to assist others, while actively applying Jesus’ message of love. Students had opportunities to engage in off-site service projects and reflect on their own service experiences to grow as a person and believer of Jesus’ Gospel message of love for all. Ideally, students conclude this course with a better understanding of how humble service fulfills Jesus’ call and encourages lives of faith, hope, and love.
"This term of theology has taught me that volunteering is easier than I thought it was. I thought I was too socially awkward to do any good, so I used that as an excuse. I realized that I have skills that volunteers have and should share them with others. I have grown to understand better that no matter what I do, God will love me, and no matter how I feel I am still loved. There is nothing I could do that would make me less worthy of God's love and less worthy of love from others. I have everything I need as long as I keep God by my side and in my thoughts.
""I think a big part for me is just hearing that I am loved and that I can love others. Love can be in so many different forms, especially volunteering, and it never really occurred to me before this class just how much of a difference it can make. I never thought about it, but I have the courage to talk to someone new who might be in a nursing home, and it flows really easily. By just being aware of what I am capable of and tapping into that, I have become a much better person this term. I am more understanding of people going through hard times, more willing to go out and help others in need, and more confident that I can make a difference in this world. I don’t need anything special, or my friends with me to be able to do this. It’s all able to be done by me, it’s just a matter of realizing it.
"A big thank you to the staff, administration, and parents for making this course a reality! Your generosity and commitment to volunteering truly made it happen!
- Kate Geenen
I joined the Xavier community six years ago after my “retirement” from teaching. Previously I had been a teacher at St. Raymond High School for Boys in the Bronx, New York and at Lourdes Academy in Oshkosh. Acting on the advice of my older brother Jim, I reached out to Xavier and asked if there was anything I could do. This led to me “working” in the XMS After Care program. Since that time, I have been in almost every classroom in the Xavier System from PreK3 to seniors. It has been a blessing of a lifetime. I have learned a lot.
I have learned that as a teacher I am able to touch the hearts of children for Christ, and to be a representation of who Jesus is in every interaction. I may never fully know if I was successful in that effort, but I do know that my heart was touched by every child I served. For they allowed me to love them in ways I never believed I could. I want to express my sincerest gratitude to all the students that I have taught and for the many blessings they have bestowed.
One thing I have learned is that students want to be seen by meaningful adults in their life. They want to, and they need to, be seen by us – parents, adults, teachers, priests, coaches, leaders. They need our blessing. They need to see, right in our eyes, the radical acceptance of their reality. And they need to read in our eyes the words: ‘You are my beloved child; in you I am well-pleased.’ Young people need our appreciative gaze; mostly they simply need our gaze.
I also want to express my appreciation to the faculty and staff of Xavier. I state with no reservations whatsoever, you are the best group of professionals I have worked with in my career. God bless you all and thank you.
In closing, I want to thank all the parents and guardians of the children that were entrusted to my care. I want you to know that I did my best, and that you and your children will always be in my prayers. Again, thank you.
Your Brother in Christ, Rick Duncan
I used to think I'd dance a jig on retirement day, but I found it's much more complicated than that. It’s bittersweet. Working in Catholic schools for the past 21 years (11 years at Notre Dame Academy and 10 years at Xavier) has been a profound blessing to me and my family. I am very grateful to have worked with so many kind, smart, talented, faith-filled students over the years. Simply put, I am a better person, a better dad, and a better Christian for having spent time with you all. I am very grateful also to coworkers who put so much time and energy into making Xavier a great place to learn and work. My wife and I are thankful that our son, a Xavier Middle School student, spends his days with kids who value learning and faith. (Thank you, parents, for shaping such wonderful young people.) I look forward to seeing you in the pews, seats, and bleachers.
In the heart of the Xavier school system, there exists a resilient and faithful educator named Mr. Rick Duncan. His journey from the depths of addiction to becoming a beloved teacher and mentor is a testament to the power of God and the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many.
Rick’s story is not one of simplicity or ease. Once trapped in the grips of addiction, he struggled through five drug rehabilitation centers, each time vowing to regain control over his life. The promise of only using drugs on weekends quickly spiraled into a cycle of dependency that left him homeless on the streets of Connecticut. At a low point, on the sands of Clearwater Beach in Florida, Rick grappled with the question: “How did I get here?” Speeding by was a cigarette speed boat aptly named “Temptation.” Standing in a cloud of the substances that derailed his life, Rick encountered a sand sculpture of Jesus. In that moment, he made a commitment to follow Christ, a decision that would shape the rest of his life.
This vow led him back to the Bronx, where a serendipitous meeting with Brother Frank, the principal of Saint Raymond’s School for Boys, led him to a new chapter. Brother Frank saw potential in Rick and encouraged him to consider teaching theology to the boys at St. Raymond. Rick initially declined the offer; however, he agreed to pray about it. About a week later, with trepidation, he soon found himself in a classroom filled with 35 boys. He began each
class by invoking the Holy Spirit, offering a peace that resonated deeply within him. The students became not just learners but family—each one teaching him the essence of love and connection. Rick’s journey as an educator was marked by challenges, including the heartbreaking loss of students to illness and gang violence. Yet, he remained steadfast, sharing his own scars and struggles, showing his students that vulnerability is a strength. His philosophy was simple: every child is a beloved child of God. This perspective transformed his classroom into a sanctuary of love and acceptance.
When family responsibilities called him to Wisconsin, Mr. Duncan’s commitment to education and service never waned. At Lourdes School, he began anew, greeting students with warmth and dedication, always going above and beyond to enrich their lives. After retiring from Lourdes’s, Mr. Duncan’s journey was far from over. He answered the call to serve in the aftercare program at Xavier, and later as a Theology teacher. After retiring… again, Mr. Duncan works for Xavier as a substitute teacher, where he continues to inspire students and deepen their faith. His wife, Nadine, lovingly refers to him as “God’s most reluctant servant,” yet he embodies the spirit of selflessness and dedication as he accepts God’s will for his life. Rick’s experiences shaped his approach to teaching and ministry. He shares his failures openly, reminding students of the grace that comes from humility and the importance of compassion.
Rick Duncan’s impact extends beyond the classroom. He now volunteers regularly, inviting students to serve the sick and less fortunate. He has inspired students like Nicholas Rust, a Xavier student, to experience a conversion and a commitment to Jesus and his new-found Catholic faith. Nick now leads the daily Chaplet of Divine Mercy at the Xavier High School Chapel, carrying forward the spirit of prayer and community that Mr. Duncan and Father Patrick instilled in him. Through his journey, Rick has created a ripple effect of love, hope, and faith that resonates within the halls of Xavier.
As he continues to teach and mentor, Mr. Duncan’s story serves as a powerful reminder that redemption is possible, and that the path to healing can lead to a life of purpose, impact, joy and peace. His unwavering faith and dedication to students like Nick Rust exemplify the transformative power of love and the profound
This is the second year that Xavier Elementary and Xavier Middle School are using Star Assessments to support teaching and student learning. Star Assessments by Renaissance, used across the Diocese of Green Bay, are computer adaptive assessments that provide teachers with current, reliable and valid data. This data enables teachers to monitor student progress and target instruction to provide appropriate interventions for students needing academic support as well as extension opportunities for students needing additional challenges. Star Assessments are administered three times a year: during the fall, winter, and spring.
During Summer 2024, XE and XMS teachers gathered together with a consultant from Renaissance to review, analyze and interpret testing data and reports.
difference one person can make in the world. In a society often quick to judge, Rick Duncan stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the extraordinary potential within us all to rise above adversity and inspire those around us.
Congratulations to Xavier High School which has been named to the 2023 AP School Honor Roll! XHS is a Gold member of the Honor Roll! The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.
Here are some amazing stats from our dedicated students:
• In 2023-24, 169 XHS students enrolled in an AP course and took 259 AP exams
• 79% of students who took an AP exam scored 3 or higher– often qualifying them college credit
• 53% of Xavier Juniors took an AP exam last year
• We had 57 AP Scholars last year (juniors & seniors)
The Xavier System is excited to be participating in CatholicLeader Academy with support from St. Norbert College and the Diocese of Green Bay. CatholicLeader Academy is a competency-based leadership development program founded on the core beliefs of our Catholic faith, as expressed in the words of Micah 6:8– “Act Justly, Love Tenderly, Walk Humbly with your God.” These core beliefs provide the foundation for this Catholic leadership program, which seeks to develop disciples who have the courage, competencies, and connectedness to better share their talents with students and campus.
"From the time I started working with this group of leaders back in August, I have been impressed by the passion and commitment that they bring to Xavier Catholic Schools. Their love for the students is so apparent, and their willingness to grow and develop as individuals and with their teams makes working with them so much fun! With these leaders, Xavier Catholic Schools is in good hands and I can't wait to see what they will be able to do in the months and years ahead!

"Being a part of CLA has allowed for personal, professional, and spiritual growth. The ability to connect with staff from all Xavier campuses has been valuable and rewarding, and I’m excited to see what lies ahead for our school community.
Xavier has been blessed with many iconic educators who have left their mark on our community. Foreign language professor Jim Pfefferle certainly was one of those icons, and X Magazine recently caught up with him to look back on his career and learn more of what he has been up to since retirement.
Jim began a 39-year career of teaching German at Xavier High School back in 1975. Over nearly four decades he touched the lives of countless students. Always known for his amazing attitude, Jim is quick to point out that he had the best job ever; teaching generations of students and families the language and culture he loved. Among his favorite memories were his daily engagement with students, and the rapport and friendship that he built with fellow faculty members, many of whom remain close friends today.
Herr Pfefferle, as he is fondly remembered, was an instructor who took his subject matter very seriously. Yet, he also made the learning experience fun through engaging and humorous stories about people around the world. This approach served Jim and Xavier well, as year after year students were always eager to enroll in Jim’s classes. Now his serious, yet humorous approach lives on as many of his former students are retelling Herr Pfefferle’s tales with their families and at class reunions.
In addition to his outstanding work in the classroom, Jim also connected and exposed students to life outside the United States. His proudest accomplishment was establishing an exchange program with a school in St. Augustine, Germany, which he moderated his entire career. Numerous Hawks participated in this program and continued to purse their interest by studying abroad in Germany.
A prime example is Margot ‘04, the Pfefferle’s oldest daughter, who resides in Germany, working for an IT company. Her and her husband have two small children, whose first tongue is German. Jim and his wife, Karen, look forward to visiting at least once each year and combining their stays with exploring European destinations.
Their youngest daughter, Martina ‘06, resides in Chicago and works in the beauty industry. The Pfefferle’s have made Chicago a second playground, but are currently on a quest to visit all fifty state capitals. Only seven capitals remain, and Honolulu is their next destination in March. When Jim isn’t traveling, he is staying involved in the Appleton community by volunteering to teach English to Spanish speaking individuals at the Fox Valley Literacy Council. Consequently, he is taking classes in Spanish at Fox Valley Technical College to improve his own language skills.
Jim would love to express his gratitude to the Xavier community and his wonderful experience at a truly special institution. He extends a special thank you to all his students for being a part of his life. If you happen to be a former student, Jim would love to hear from you and learn what you have been doing since graduation. He encourages you to reach out to him at jamespfefferle10@gmail.com
As lifelong members of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, we’ve always felt a strong connection to our community, and it was a natural fit for our children to attend PreK-8 there. But when it came time for our oldest to transition to high school, the decision of where he would go weighed heavily on our hearts. Throughout the consideration process, God gently nudged us in the direction of Xavier High School. As parents, we knew we wanted a school that would challenge Owen academically, while also supporting his growth as a child of God. After attending parent preview nights, shadowing at various schools, and reflecting on what mattered most to us, it became clear: Xavier High School was the right choice.
One of the key factors that led us to Xavier was its commitment to fostering a strong personal faith and relationship with God. As a family, our goal is to help each other get to heaven, and we wanted a school that would not only respect this, but actively encourage it. Xavier's strong Catholic identity, its focus on integrating faith into everyday learning, and the opportunities for spiritual growth were incredibly important to us. We wanted a place where Owen could deepen his faith, participate in Mass and retreats, and feel supported in his journey with God.
Another important consideration for us was the sense of community at Xavier. From the moment we stepped onto campus, we were struck by how welcoming and inclusive the school felt. Whether it was the warm greetings from faculty, the interactions with current student leaders, or the sense of camaraderie among the families, it felt like a place where Owen could truly belong.
Of course, we also wanted a school that would challenge Owen academically. Xavier’s reputation for academic rigor was another key factor in our decision. The variety of challenging courses, the college-preparatory curriculum, and the impressive outcomes—whether in high test scores or the success of graduates—were all major selling points. We felt that Xavier would push Owen to reach his full potential, not just in terms of grades but in developing critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills that would serve him well in the future.
Perhaps the most important reason we chose Xavier was the way it made us feel—like home. On Owen’s shadow day, we saw his joy and how comfortable he felt there. We knew that this wasn’t just a school; it was a place where Owen could grow, thrive, and become the person he’s meant to be. As parents, we felt at peace with our decision, knowing that Xavier wasn’t just a good fit—it felt like the right fit for our family.
In the end, our choice was clear. Xavier High School offered everything we were looking for—and now, a few months in, we continue to feel at home. We’re grateful to be a part of the Xavier family and excited for the journey ahead.

We continue to highlight our Xavier Endowment for Faculty and Staff Fund. This fund was established in 2023 to support Xavier’s ability to retain and recruit outstanding servant leaders and educators. Securing the resources necessary to ensure that Xavier is maintaining and attracting quality teachers and staff is our system’s number one priority. This entails offering competitive salary and benefit packages and giving staff the necessary resources of time, classroom support, and other assistance so that they may focus on teaching and making sure that each child is valued.
We are working toward a goal of 6 Million dollars to support the immediate and long term needs for this fund. Through generous donors we have received over $390,000 to support this initiative. Please consider a gift to this fund to support our educators who truly are the systems greatest asset.
If you would like to make a donation to this fund or learn more about our efforts please contact Dave Romenesko at dromenesko@ xaviercathoicschools.org or (920) 735-9380 ext. 5507.

The high school embraced National Kindness Week with creativity and heart, recognizing that a simple act of kindness or a few encouraging words can make a big difference in someone’s life. Students were reminded of their Christian calling to shine brightly, sharing love and compassion with everyone, even those who may not always show the same in return. The Guidance Department spearheaded the week’s activities, ensuring kindness took center stage. Each morning began with announcements featuring an uplifting Bible verse and a fun fact about kindness. Additionally, a donation drive for Saving Paws Dog Rescue highlighted the joy of giving and extended kindness to the rescue that Lady, the school’s service dog, came from.
One of the week's standout activities was the Appreciation Station. Students had the opportunity to write thank-you notes to teachers, staff, and classmates, recognizing and celebrating the good in others. Encouraged to look beyond their friend groups, students dropped their notes into a collection box, and the Guidance team delivered them the next day. Many students and staff were blessed to have their days brightened by those notes.
A lively photo station added an element of fun as students and staff posed as the “I” in “Kind,” creating memorable snapshots captured by the yearbook team. The week culminated with a Service Club Blood Drive, demonstrating another way kindness can save and transform lives.
National Kindness Week at Xavier High School was more than just a celebration; it was a call to action, inspiring everyone to carry the spirit of kindness into their daily lives.
Dear Xavier Community,

As we look ahead, our commitment to our students and community remains steadfast. The generosity and faith of the Xavier community inspire us to continue striving for excellence in all we do. Together, we will build on this year’s successes and ensure that the St. Francis Xavier School System remains a beacon of hope, faith, and education for years to come.
Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to all listed in this annual report. May God bless you and your families abundantly.

On behalf of the Board of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School Foundation, I would like to thank all of you who have supported the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System and the Foundation through your generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure. Through your generosity, the Foundation was able to contribute nearly $418,000 to the System during the 2023/2024 school year, serving as a crucial source of revenue and a means to assist many who value and desire a Catholic-based education but are unable to afford one. During that time, the Foundation also received gifts totaling $395,021 and ended the year with just over $8,786,339 in assets. We appreciate your support and commitment to the System and to Catholic-based education.
The Foundation supports the promise of a quality Catholic-based education and provides ongoing financial support for the financial needs of our St. Francis Xavier School System and the students we serve; a System dedicated to faith formation, academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and a supportive community. Areas of emphasis include reinforcing our Catholic identity and further supporting faculty and staff. The Foundation is actively involved in raising and providing funds to help recruit and retain top-quality educators and staff who give so faithfully of themselves in support of our students. We are also committed to ensuring that academic resources and facilities continue to meet the high expectations for a top-quality educational system.
As the need for Catholic and Christ-centered education grows, so do our aspirations for the Foundation. We must continue to look for opportunities to build on our Catholic identity. We must continue to make a Xavier education accessible and affordable for all who are called. We must attract and retain talented educators and staff who are passionate about sharing knowledge and faith formation with students. We must maintain all our campuses as desirable destinations for our community’s finest and faith-filled students. Please consider joining those who have given by contacting us to discuss how your own gift may have the greatest impact on continuing the Xavier

H Honorary Alumni
your IRA to support Xavier Catholic Schools – Thanks to Mr. John Bennett
The St. Francis Xavier Foundation is delighted to announce the establishment of the John Bennett Personal Finance Education Fund, made possible by the generosity of John Bennett, father of Marc Bennett, a 2004 Xavier alumnus. This new fund will provide students with essential financial literacy education, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to make sound financial decisions and achieve long-term financial independence.
In his retirement, John became aware of the government’s Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from his Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Individuals aged 73 and older are required to take annual withdrawals, known as Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), from their IRAs.
By directing a portion of his RMD to the St. Francis Xavier Foundation, John avoided paying income tax on the withdrawal. This strategy not only reduced his taxable income but also maximized the impact of his donation, making it a smart and meaningful way to give back.
Mr. Bennett’s thoughtful and generous gift serves as an inspiration for others to explore this creative way to support St. Francis Xavier Catholic Schools. For donors at or approaching age 72, a QCD is a powerful way of giving generous support, while also enjoying significant tax advantages. This method of giving allows donors to make a meaningful impact in their communities without affecting their adjusted gross income. Whether you wish to create a fund, contribute to an existing one, or support general needs, a QCD is an excellent option to consider.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to John Bennett for his generosity, vision, and dedication to educating future generations. His gift is a testament to the transformative power of philanthropy and highlights the importance of financial literacy in shaping capable, well-prepared individuals.
If you are inspired by John’s story and would like to explore how you can make a difference through a Qualified Charitable Distribution or other giving options, we encourage you to contact Dave Romenesko of our Advancement team at 920.735.9380 ext. 5507 or at dromenesko@xaviercatholicschools.org.
Together, we can continue to empower students and build a brighter future.
