You've Got to Risk it for the Biscuit!

Iknowwe’ve all done it. Had a great idea and sat on it. Sat on it long enough that someone else came to market with it before we could. Why? Is it the money? Is it the know-how? Is it the connections? Why is that other person sitting on your stack of cash right now? My guess is that nine times out of ten, we didn’t believe we could do it.

The wraps market is unique in the fact that every day, you come across an “Oh shit!” moment. One where you think, “If I only had an XYZ gadget, it would make this install so much easier.” Every new job and every new vehicle presents new opportunities for your mind to expand and explore your tool pouch to find the most efficient install technique to complete the task at hand. Yet, sometimes that tool isn’t in your pouch. Or maybe, it’s there, but it’s three tools that should be one. Or maybe it’s a new training technique or class you’ve developed. Something you can start and make your own. Or, perhaps it’s a much-needed industry magazine serving the needs of an amazing niche market?! Who knows!

One thing is for sure, the saying nothing ventured - nothing gained is true 100% of the time. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. If you’re not willing to bet your (proverbial) balls and shake on it, you’ll never achieve greatness.

Over the last 20 years, I’ve seen amazing innovations. I’ve seen game-changers like Knifeless Tape. I’ve seen the meteoric rise of The Wrap Institute. I’ve seen tools created out of thin air and molded in front of my eyes by the team at YelloTools. Every day people are working to fulfill their vision, not taking no for an answer, utilizing every resource at their disposal, to make it happen… so what’s holding you back?

Go get that bag!

Why Margins Matter in Business

hen we first opened our wrap business in 2004

our main focus was to stay in business and keep it running without closing our doors. That was our biggest fear and concern. Making a profit and creating a good life for us was paramount but we just didn’t want to go under. After some time of proving our worth and creating a viable business, you start to peel back some of the layers of your business that have worked along with what hasn’t worked. I think a fair amount of us have gone through pricing changes, realignments, culture changes, and process evaluations, and continue to do so. I know we have and will continue to do so. I preface these items because I was lucky to be taught how important margins are to your company and most importantly your growth. Without fuel for your company, you cannot grow. Sometimes growing also doesn’t mean you add ten more team members and 4 new printers. You can grow your company by creating more cash flow, creating safety nets for slow times, and can also invest in education for your team, acquiring the best talent available, and allowing you to be around for a long time. These actions can’t be achieved without good, consistent margins. Being in the graphic industry, most of what

we sell, and produce is all custom-made. Some products are purchased, marked up, and sold back to our clients. Being in the wrap industry we are designing these wraps, creating a brand, producing the graphics, detailing the vehicle, installing the vehicle wrap, doing quality control, and then invoicing for payment. A fair number of steps take place during this process which requires not only a good amount of labor but also administration time. The mark-up in our industry can be particularly good and lucrative. Especially if you have your margins correct. Margins to most people are common sense but it is not common sense until it becomes common practice. When we first started our business in 2004, I would run into a landscaping business that was doing four million dollars a year in revenue. Then I would have lunch with an HVAC company that was doing over seven million dollars in revenue. When we finished lunch, he told me that he was operating with 7% margins and that business was not great. That really opened my eyes to what companies were really making money. I went back to the landscaping company that I was friends with and asked him what his margins were. At that time, they were operating at almost 5% margins and were barely hanging on. I could not imagine doing four million dollars worth of wraps, deadlines, stress, and busting our tails just to have a five percent margin. This information was both discouraging and encouraging at the same time.

8 l WrapFam Unleashed l May 2024 The Wrap Biz

This is when I really started to go back and reverse engineer our sales process, pricing list, touch time, administration time, and how long it really took to complete a wrap from beginning to end.

At our company we really try to stay in the 60% - 70% margins on most jobs that we complete. For example, if we were quoting a partial wrap for a client and we had $400 in material along with $300 in labor we would charge $3,000 for this partial wrap. The total overhead for this job would be $700 total. We then subtract $700 from the sales price of $3,000 which will give us $2,300. Then take $2,300 and divide by what you sold this partial wrap for which was $3,000. That will give you a 76% margin on this one example. Keep in mind that you will not always hit these types of margins depending on the scope of work that you are performing. I tell my sales staff all the time that we cannot always

get those types of margins. If we purchase an item that we don’t produce and resale back to our client those items usually have 40% margin or so. Just don’t beat yourself up when you can’t always generate those types of margins. All these numbers can become boring to some but for me, it gets me excited. Especially during the quoting phase of the sales process. By diving deep into your quoting process, you can really calculate how much overhead you have into each product which allows you to know what streams of revenue bring the most margins for your company. At Digital EFX Wraps we usually never give out discounts or run a special sales campaign until about two years ago. I noticed that January and February were our company’s slowest months. So, to combat that we offered a 15% discount on all wraps during those months. While it did pump up sales for those two months that discount was applied to all our

May 2024 l WrapFam Unleashed l 9

products including signage, design, and installation services. What I learned very quickly was some of our products did not have enough margin in them to justify giving a 15% discount. As the next year came to an end, I set up our new sales campaign and offered our discount to only box trucks and trailers. The reason for this was due to our high margins on these items. Our labor was significantly lower on these wraps because our team could wrap three to four trailers per day depending on size and complexity. I noticed that these vehicles were in the 75% - 80% profit margins for our company. We ended up doing just as many sales in January/February as we had done in the previous year with less labor. Our company was just as profitable with 25% less labor than the year prior.

Another easy example to use in your head or on paper is a simple 4 x8 banner that you might produce for one of your clients. If a 4x8 banner costs our company 50 cents per

square foot to produce that would cost our company $16 to print, trim, and grommet. We would then sell that to our customer for $192 at $6 per square foot. If we do the math that I mentioned earlier you would subtract $16 from $192 giving you $176.00 left over. Then take $176.00 and divide by the sale amount of $192 which gives you a 91% margin on this one job.

I don’t know about you but I would take these margins every single day of the week. This is why some companies focus only on banners and these types of products. Also, the more work you provide and the revenue you produce will allow you to adjust your margins so that you can become even more affordable which should bring in more business. I could discount this banner by $90 and would still be around 84% margin for this exact job. This would be an item that I would be willing to do a sales campaign on or even donate to a great local charity.

10 l WrapFam Unleashed l May 2024
The Wrap Biz

I highly recommend that you go back to a few of your last vehicle wraps, signage, or any other graphic product that you have sold over the past month. Look at what was charged to your client, what it took to produce that product, and what was your final margin on that job. This will give you a clearer picture of what you and your company are producing. As I teach in my business class for Inside the Wrap Shop you need good margins in order to add fuel to your rocket. Not only as business owners do we need to be profitable, but we need cash flow in order to grow and protect ourselves during slow times. I learned a long time ago that being a 2 million dollar wrap company doesn’t mean anything

unless you have the correct margins that will give you true net profits at the end of each year. This is what is important. This is what will allow you to grow. This will also allow you to hire better talent to add to your team which will take you to another level. Work on your margins and you will see your bank account change dramatically!!!

Unwrapping Success

Key Tips for Running a Top-Notch Wrap Shop

When it comes to running a successful wrap shop, it's more than the likes and follows on social media. It's a blend of creativity and business acumen, driven by a deep focus on both customers and products. Whether you’re an old dog or just starting your company, here are six essential tips for running a top-notch wrap shop in today's competitive market.

Brand Identity

When it comes to having a quality brand, I've experienced both ends of the spectrum. Back when our business, Lettering Express, was founded in 1988, our logo was inspired by the classic Cheers television show. Picture it in all its glory... I'll wait. When it came to using our logo in different scenarios or applications, there was no thought or

12 l WrapFam Unleashed l May 2024
Member Spotlight TNT (Tips N Tricks)

intention. Neon orange? Hell yes! Rainbow? You got it! Looking back, it was honestly madness, but we didn't know any better. Eventually, we were exposed to quality design and became involved in our community by attending local design industry events, like AIGA. That's where we met nationally recognized graphic designer, artist, and musician Matt Goad, and he changed our world. We collaborated on some of his personal projects, and his designs really resonated with me. I asked Goad to design a mural for our install bay, suggesting he add our logo in the "Matt Goad Style'' which focused on bold geometric shapes. I remember calling my wife after seeing the first version and telling her "We're about to rebrand

our business." One major benefit we discovered from this process was hiring someone from outside our business, an experienced designer with no emotional opinion on our logo. We were too close to our brand; we needed to let the designer design and let the sticker stickers stick.

Once we rebranded, our game slowly but surely changed. Our clientele changed, we changed, and our business changed. All for the better - it seemed that awareness of quality design attracted a higher level of clients. Not only a higher level of client but also easier communication and reliability when it came to the sales interaction. Meaning, the leads turned into legitimate sales. The updated logo

also opened up new markets where design was important, specifically when it came to design and architectural firms. This was around the time when we realized that a brand is more than a logo. It's the company's lifeline, this new identity sent us to define our mission and values. Once we established those elements, we could use them to guide all of our decision-making moving forward. Don't sleep on a proper brand, my friend.

Build the Dream Team

Running your business on your own is rad and all, but eventually, you'll want to go on vacation. For some of you reading this, that same vacation mentality might just mean actually leaving the office at 5 PM. If that hits close to home, I'd be willing to wager you might wear it as a badge of honor. I did too - trust me, it gets old, and the juice isn't worth the squeeze. I'm all about being the star of your own show, but it's not realistic for the long term. In my experience, we've had success dividing and conquering. This

could mean completing a wrap in a few hours with multiple team members or tackling large wall murals with proper flow and pace. Know your lane and dig in. Even the weakest link on the team helps hold the group together. Everyone brings value to the table. If you're going to take out the trash, do it with style and grace - own that shit!

Positive Work Culture

Fostering a positive workplace environment cannot be overstated. Culture has always been important to our team, we spend a lot of hours at the office and that time needs to be healthy. If there's a bad vibe in the shop, you can feel the toxicity in the air, the tension so thick you can cut it with a knife. I always say, if there's no music in the install bay, something is off! Is everyone wearing headphones? Nope! Sideways chatter? Shut it down quickly. Addressing workplace culture issues is crucial for the overall group. Everyone on your team has a different background, different day, and different life, and the sooner you recognize that the better your life will be. Building a team isn't one size fits all. I've seen a negative Nancy bring the entire room down within seconds. If you let negativity fester within the group for too long, it will kill the morale of anyone who listens. Take it from my experience, anyone can fake an interview. Make sure you're hiring with intention and have a solid idea of what you value in a team member, remembering you’ll be spending 40 hours a week side by side. If you're running your business right, you're

having a good time between the stress. The only way you can really move forward is to have the right people in place. Lift your team up at any given opportunity and pay them the best you can! Be transparent about the company's goals and ambitions, and encourage them to do the same.

Obtain Industry Certifications

Manufacturer training and certifications offer numerous benefits, with the most notable being continued education, credibility, and a good boost of confidence. If you think you know everything - you don't. If you think you're the best, you're not! Nothing is worse than thinking you're in first, but your mentality is keeping you

in last. Learning from industry experts is factual, not just an Instagram influencer's opinion. I am by no means trying to bring anyone down here, these training just need credibility. When you attend training or obtain a certification, you start to develop a relationship with the manufacturer. This opens up numerous benefits for running your business. It could be a direct line to the source for questions or needs, or perhaps the "in the know" information on the next hot material or trend. This education also equips you with the tools to avoid major hiccups when choosing the correct material for a project. Don't stick to one manufacturer; taste them all, they can be sweet! All vinyl manufacturer's films behave differently,

experiment with them in a class. You might dislike the film, but it's better to find out during training than with a failing fleet. Lastly, there's no better feeling than setting a goal to pass a test and crushing it! That boost is a great feeling, but watch out - the certification train can become expensive if not approached properly, do your research and choose wisely from the beginning.

Deliver Killer Customer Experience

You have heard the classic phrase, "The customer is always right". That's true to some extent, but in order to satisfy a customer, you need a great customer experience. Customer service isn't just about delivering a clean product; it's about delivering it within the communicated timeline and with the discussed quality. You never want to overpromise and underdeliver. It's pretty simple: do what you say you're going to do. In all moments you want to be curating customer confidence. One tip that worked for me was padding the timeline. If I thought a vehicle wrap would take three days, I would tell the client five. When you call with an early pickup, you look like a rock star. Try to solve the client's problem, not just complete the sale. If you are true to their needs and lead them in the right direction, you’ll create clients for life and there is no better marketing tactic than a referral.

Market Yourself Effectively

Marketing yourself is crucial in this social media-driven world. People's heads are down these days; give them something good to look at. I assure you wouldn't be reading this if I hadn't

16 l WrapFam Unleashed l May 2024

Lettering Express practices what they preach, utilizing their storefronts for maximum branding and exposure.

marketed myself correctly. That proper brand we talked about needs to be presented consistently and clearly. Stay true to yourself and ensure your brand matches that identity. I'm a big fan of being yourself through and through, which also makes it easier to go to work. If you don't put on a mask, work isn't work; create the life you want to live. The tips listed are not meant to be your road map to success. Unfortunately, these ideas won't solve your current problems or create sales today. My goal is to get you thinking about how your business looks and feels. Does it align with your passions? Do you have concrete goals for the future? Or are you on autopilot

just trying to make it to the next deadline/ tomorrow? When it comes to product offering, keep your spread focused. Find the products & services you’re good at, the ones you enjoy making and that are profitable. Once you figure that out, you’ve found the missing puzzle piece, then you can move on to the next one.

The Ideal Customer Experience

Joshua G asked: Can you describe what the ideal customer experience should feel like, from start to finish?

reat question Joshua, thank you.

There are a lot of factors that come into play with customer experience and the one thing that has always stuck out to me with this topic is something one of my business advisors told me many years ago. He said "Your goal with customer experience is to provide such a positive experience that they want to tell the world how great your company is before they even pull out of your parking lot. You want them so happy that they feel obligated to leave you a review or share how great the experience was with everyone they know."

I am a huge fan of reverse engineering everything in my life and business. I find the end goal and reverse engineer the entire process back to the basics, the ground level if you will, which in the client experience case would be the very first time you or your team has the opportunity to communicate with the client. This can come in many different avenues.

Quite possibly the most common avenue for a client to reach out to you is via phone, this is your very first opportunity to make an impression and build rapport with your client.

Everyone on your team should answer the phone in the same manner with the same word track.

At Vinyl Images, our word track is this: "Thank you for calling Vinyl Images, this is (person answering the phone's name) how can I help you?" I cannot express how important it is to greet the person calling in with a positive tone to your voice and inflection that you are excited to speak to them about their project. Believe it or not, smiling before you answer the phone is very important as it subconsciously sets the tone of happiness and changes the tone of your voice as opposed to being stressed about your day and answering the phone and allowing your stress to be felt through the tone of your voice. People feel this and it is important to make them feel wanted and welcomed.

Another aspect that we are serious about at Vinyl Images is to answer the phone in NO MORE than 2 rings. Our team understands that if the phone rings more than 2 times it is everyone's responsibility to grab that call and make the client feel needed. There is nothing more annoying to me than to call a company and have the phone ring and ring and ring. Do you even care that I'm calling? Do you not want my business? Answer the phone promptly and politely and you will close more leads. One thing that I am seeing more and more of is automated answering service. You know

18 l WrapFam Unleashed l May 2024
Ask John

the one where you call and it says "Please press 1 to speak to John, please press 2 to speak to Destiney, and so on and so on." I personally do not prefer this method and the human interaction of a real person answering the phone is far more valuable than an automated answering service. I'm not saying this is wrong, I am simply saying that I would much rather speak to someone directly than a computer. Human interactions are becoming less and less nowadays and any chance I can get to have my team speak directly to the client I take. and we make the most of that interaction.

Another very common way for clients to reach out to you is through social media or email. Both of which should be looked at in the same manner. The goal is to get these clients on the phone to speak to them about their projects. If a client refuses to get on a call then it typically is not a client that I want to work with as going back and forth via messenger or email is insanely inefficient and at the end of the day you can accomplish a lot more in a 5-10 minute phone conversation that you can go back and forth via messenger or email 5 times.

After you have spoken to the client about their project you need to clearly set the expectation of the scope of the job by educating the client as much as possible on the entire process from scheduling, drop off, installation, realistic timeframe, pick up, aftercare and warranty. The more information you can provide the client the less there will be surprises along the path from start to finish. Truth be told, most

clients have no idea what you do or the process that must be abided by in order to produce the best finished product for them. Setting expectations by educating the client on all aspects is crucial to the client experience. When you educate your client you gain more and more trust and respect which in turn leads to a much more positive experience and return business.

I believe in communicating with clients while I have their vehicle in my care, custody and control. Send them an updated picture of their project, and shoot them a text or email letting them know how amazing the project is turning out. This adds to the anticipation of the pickup and creates a sense of excitement for the client. You're getting in their feels and this only adds a positive note to the overall experience.

At the time of the project being picked up, it is imperative that you or someone on your team goes over the details of the project with the client to ensure 100% approval and happiness. Walk around their vehicle with them and talk them through how the installation went and ensure 100% happiness. Don't shy away from any reluctance the client has, dig into any issue and make sure the client is 100% satisfied with the finished product. If you set the expectations at the beginning this should be a very smooth interaction however if you did not set the right expectations then this could not be a positive interaction. Learn as you go and you will succeed.

After our clients leave with their finished product, every client receives a handwritten thank you card. We have been doing this as

20 l WrapFam Unleashed l May 2024 Ask John

long as I can remember and if there is one thing that I get compliments on from clients it is the handwritten thank you card. It is such a small gesture but with the overuse of technology, when the client gets these it feels special and makes them feel appreciated in a way that an email or social media message or post cannot.

The overall goal of the positive client experience is to make sure the client feels appreciated and they get what they want. By setting goals and following through with the expectations discussed you can assure that the client will have nothing but positive things to say about you to everyone they

come in contact with you. Happy clients are your biggest sales tool when it comes to referrals and continued business.

The Importance of Cross-Training

hroughout the years I have attended many trainings, not only for installation, but training to better understand rip software, design programs and service training for my printers. Now I have the honor of teaching installation training for 3M at Wrapix Academy in Burbank, California. I have been so blessed to relay information on install techniques I have learned over the years. But training for the standard print shop goes way past just installation. Over the years I have worn many hats from wannabe designer to production and installation. When you're a one-man operation to start you have to learn it all. Hiring a designer was hands down the best thing I had ever done. However, it was not soon after hiring my first designer, that I realized not just any designer will do everything you need. Some are used to web design or page layout and what we do is nothing like that. So it takes some due diligence to really make sure that the designer that you are employing is really making the most of their time each day. With today’s push of social media and websites, you will find most applicants who come looking for a job can’t seem to comprehend the world that we live in because it doesn’t live on a screen. From scale to file format templates and color.

designing for vehicle wraps is not a course offered in the traditional college curriculum. One of my mentors over the years, Jody Frego, recently started exactly that - a design program to teach designers exactly what our industry needs. With his decades of experience, Full Circle Wrap Training has 3 classes specifically designed around vehicle wrap design techniques. They offer classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced designers. His course will be part of the onboarding process for anyone looking for a position as a graphic designer at Wrapix.

But just understanding how to design a graphic on a computer is not enough, in my opinion. Designers need to have an understanding of installation. But that’s not because we want them in the install bays laying graphics each day. Working as a freelance installer for many years I can’t count the amount of times I have heard from the install team this design sucks. “You can’t read that!’ ’The text is getting cut off in the door seams!’ ‘Why would they put the overlap here?’” The list goes on and on. I have found that designers with an understanding of installation turn out better designs that will not only install better and faster but also give the customer a more striking graphic. Giving designers a better look at what it takes to turn their vision into a reality is key to producing the best result possible.

But you can’t stop there. Teach your installers about production so that they can see

24 l WrapFam Unleashed l May 2024
The Shop

what it takes to put a hard stop to jobs in process and go back and reprint because they made a mistake. Let them see the complex skills required to match color on that panel because now it’s a different lot number, time of day and your (insert printer name) decided to hate you that afternoon. It does not matter the size of your company. From 3 employees to 100 the more that each person understands about what happens to that graphic from concept to finished product will greatly increase efficiency as well as team building.

I have taught many students over the years from seasoned installers to the YouTube certified installers, from designers to production managers and sales teams. It’s important that each person understands what they are all working towards. If the sales team sells a graphic on the wrong film that takes the installers 3 times longer to install the company loses. Have your sales team install different films so that they can see firsthand how recommending the correct product will set the job up for success on day one. If

installers make mistakes and cause production to pause and reprint an already completed job the company loses. If designers don’t take into account how the film will stretch or what that logo or phone number will look like in that body line the company and customer lose.

It’s important to build up your team so that each person can lend a hand to someone else and they all understand the intricacies of their specific position. Cross-training your employees is key to success. By challenging your employees to emerge themselves into the industry and learn each aspect of the day-to-day process you will build a bulletproof team that flows well, works well, and performs at the highest level.

Elevating Brand Environments

A&M Graphics' Collaboration with Pall Corporation

The effectiveness of a brand's physical presence can significantly impact its perception in visual communication. This understanding is what drives A&M Graphics, as a pioneering company specializing in creating "Premium Graphic Environments." The company's recent collaboration with the Pall Corporation, a global leader in filtration solutions, illustrates how strategic and creative use of vinyl wraps and mixed media can transform corporate spaces into vibrant, brand-enhancing environments.

A&M Graphics and Pall Corporation

A&M Graphics, based in Auburn, NY, has carved a niche in the industry with its innovative approach to large-scale graphic installations. Owned by Matthew Ferguson, the company has built a reputation for excellence, attracting high-end clients like Pall Corporation. Pall Corporation approached A&M Graphics after being impressed by their work for similar clientele.

Design and Material Innovation

At the heart of A&M Graphics’ operations are two national-level graphic designers whose

expertise brings clients' visions to life. For Pall Corporation’s project, the team opted for an array of high-quality materials to ensure durability and visual impact. One of the standout materials used was DryTac Polar Chrome, which provided a striking reflective surface that added a "WOW" factor to the installations. Additionally, ORACAL 975HC Honeycomb Structure Cast Vinyl was used to wrap columns, creating a unique tactile experience that complemented the visual appeal. The design process at A&M Graphics is meticulous, starting from scratch for each project to ensure a tailored approach. The use of Mimaki roll-to-roll and flatbed printers ensures that every detail is captured perfectly, while their status as a 3M Certified shop and a 3M Endorsed Architectural Installer guarantees a flawless application.

The Installation Process

Installation is a critical phase where design visions become tangible realities. A&M Graphics’ team of skilled installers, trained to demand perfection, ensures that every aspect of the installation exceeds client expectations. This meticulous attention to detail is evident in the seamless integration of the vinyl graphics and architectural elements within Pall Corporation’s spaces, transforming ordinary environments into dynamic, visually engaging areas.

Future Prospects

The success of the projects at Cortland and Long Island has set the stage for a continuing partnership between Pall Corporation and A&M Graphics. Discussions are now underway for extending these enhancements nationally and globally, underscoring the trust and satisfaction Pall Corporation has in A&M Graphics. The potential expansion of their collaboration to a national and global scale speaks volumes about the effectiveness and impact of well-executed environmental graphics.

Conclusion

A&M Graphics' work with Pall Corporation is a prime example of how businesses can leverage interior design and visual art to enhance their brand's presence and connect more deeply with their audience. Through their commitment to quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction, A&M Graphics not only meets the expectations of their clients but exceeds them, leaving a lasting impression. As they expand their reach both nationally and globally, they continue to set new standards for excellence in the visual communication field. This approach not only reinforces their leadership in the market but also inspires a continuous evolution in the way brands think about and execute their physical spaces. As A&M Graphics looks to the future, their role in shaping corporate environments through graphics and design is more significant than ever. Their ability to transform ordinary spaces sets them apart in the industry and makes them a key player in the B2B sector of vinyl wrap and environmental graphics.

You Ever Have That One Friend?

In this instance, this particular question had to be asked more than once. When the owner of Sounds Good Stereo called Wrap Artist to talk to his buddy, Mully, he was looking for a special wrap for a project vehicle he was working on, and they had plenty of time to work on it; so of course, the answer was yes, no problem. (The road to hell is paved with good intentions, after all.) You see, this client is that friend. You know, that one you can't turn down. The one that's been there for you whenever you needed something. That guy.

As most of us know, when it comes to project vehicles, every little thing sets the project back timing-wise, and by the time it makes it to the wrap phase, there’s seldom that “plenty of time” left over. This was no exception. The weeks they had leading up to the wrap turned into a couple of days.

Damn the timing, of course. When the car was ready to be brought in, the Wrap Artist crew was dozens of units deep into trailer season, with a warehouse and parking lot full of others in the queue. As efficient as they operate, something like this requires real time to create, and Mully just doesn't have the time; so he called in a favor and became that friend himself. Enter Ryan Sandoval, owner of Glarb Design. Mully and Glarb share

a mutual respect and passion for design, albeit they've had heated discussions about, "what dpi is optimal for wrapping." IYKYK. Now, if you know anything about Glarb, you know the devil is in the details and they run deep. As Mully will tell you, he is "on another level." Glarb took the client's instructions and ran with them.

What were the instructions? "The crazier the better. When you think you've gone too far, go farther."

Say no more, Glarb was off and running, and the end result is a vibrant smack in the senses wrap that not only took home the prize for Best Demo Car but captured the attention of industry legend, Chip Foose.

When asked, Glarb couldn’t help but poke the bear, “I’ve looked forward to working with Mully for a long time, so I had to make sure to include as many DPI as I could!”

Outsourcing design and/or installation can be nerve-racking, especially when your reputation and friendship are on the line. As Mully put it, “Surround yourself with the best, whenever possible.” Clearly, he has. The real question is, who’s that friend you call when that friend calls you?

Wrap Artist @buswraps was the obvious choice for Dreamliner Coaches and FERXXO. After the client's design was templated, Mully and his team got to work. Printed on their HP- Latex 800s, they used 3M 3552 film and 3M 3518 gloss laminate for the perfect finish.

Seven of the coaches were wrapped in Nashville, but an eighth was added once they arrived at the gig, requiring a last-minute trip to Fontana, California to wrap it in time for the show. That wrap was done with two guys in 8 hours and 53 minutes - I’d call that dialed in. “Some clients, you just have to go above and beyond for.” says, Mullican. “Tour life at its finest.”

These short-term wraps will be removed at the conclusion of his 29-city tour covering North America. The question is, do these concertgoers know it's a wrap?

Here in Chicago, we take our sports teams seriously... and our love for our favorite team is indefinitely large. In my lifetime we have certainly had our ups and our downs, and we have had some absolute LEGENDARY players thrive in our neighborhoods and on our Chicago rosters, leaving their sports legacy in our city’s history books and their pictures on our walls.

At B5 Installations, we have the privilege of working with the Chicago White Sox as well as the Chicago Cubs to get their beautiful stadiums ready for the always nostalgic Opening Day festivities. We have had the opportunity to feel like an important part of the “team” for almost as long as B5 has been in business. Just like

the players on the field, we have to do our jobs no matter what Mother Nature or our physical ailments can throw at us. We have dealt with soreness, sickness, and even injuries as we’ve just tried to get graphics installed while the proverbial time clock is ticking away, second by second. We have dealt with rain and snow delays, we have had windy conditions and sometimes we are blessed with a beautiful sunny afternoon, and that’s when we get to squeeze every last drop out of the sunshine to make sure everything is done on time for our favorite players to come to town and do what they do best, which is play some baseball.

I have personally been lucky enough to be part of 2 World Series-winning seasons

here in Chicago. In 2005 the Chicago White Sox brought us home a trophy, and in 2016 the Chicago Cubs made history by breaking the curse of the infamous billy goat (google it, great story), and 11 years apart we were World Series Champions here in Chicago. In any event, both years our teams hailing from the Windy City brought us home a ring, and both years they were absolutely LOADED with fierce talent. Let me tell you, watching your work being broadcasted in high definition for the entire world of baseball fans and sports gamblers to see is a pretty cool moment, you feel like part of the team that you are rooting for… all while washing down your self-induced nostalgia with a cold Miller Lite. Baseball Opening Day in Chicago is typically never what you would consider to be a beautiful day. Many times, you see our athletes on the field dressed in layers and high collars… we have

industrial heaters in our dugouts for crying out loud. Late March/ early April can either be 60* and sun or 30* and snow... ya just never know… and either way, it is out of warranty guidelines for any OEM film manufacturers. The forecast for the couple of weeks leading up to the long-anticipated Home Openers for each respective ball club can be even worse... Have you ever heard the phrase “make hay while the sun’s shining?” that is EXACTLY what we do here to get Guaranteed Rate Field ready for the Chicago White Sox and the iconic Wrigley Field ready for the Chicago Cubs. That is when OUR TEAM of professionals here at B5 hit the field(s). I like to think of owning a graphics installation business exactly like running a professional sports team. As an owner, you hire a new prospect based on the talent and potential you see in them, you collaborate with them, you train them and teach them, your seasoned veterans on the team guide them and you let them learn from their mistakes even if it costs you some money along the way, all in hopes of making them an All-Star team member and installer. You coach your team and call your plays based off getting the “W” for that day and putting a big dent in that mile-long list of graphics to be installed before you can walk off the field. By the way, I want to mention that most of us current “coaches” were former “players” and we have been coached by some of the best. I have had some great coaches in my career, and some of them are still coaching me to this

day. Each of them has taught me a few valuable lessons about my game strategies. I’m still on the field (or in a lift or hanging off a ladder) playing the graphics game that I love, but I can see the transition to “coach” beginning to happen. These teammates here at B5 will knock any project out of the park, they’re all supertalented players in this game of graphics installations.

2024 has been no different than any other year. Our team is on the field and working hard to get everything looking its absolute best for game time.

B5 has had the chance to collaborate with several vendors as well as the purchasing agents and operators at these ball teams to strategically and carefully orchestrate a majority of the work done at these venues. Luckily for me as the Coach (because of what I have learned from my coaches and my hard work in my career) I have developed great internal relationships within each level. I let my players on the field worry about the task at hand and I try to take care of as much of the closed-door business dealings as possible. I can

select materials and finishes needed to make things happen and deliver a fresh look to the stadium just in time for Opening Day. I also have the luxury of (mostly) choosing the installation schedule.

There are always “priority” items due to a corporate walk-through or sponsorship item, but for the most part, everyone understands we are all up against two inevitable factors that we have no

control over… time and weather. Neither of these factors can be controlled no matter how great anyone thinks they can plan ahead.

Luckily for us during this hustle, modern-day technology and freakin’ science has also gifted us with the proper materials and equipment to make this magic happen. The vendors that hire us for installation of all these products all use top-of-the-line equipment and we have a wide array of materials to combat any situation we are experiencing. HP latex inks provide the ability to laminate immediately following print, 3M, Avery, and Arlon films have so many solutions

but we primarily stick to the PVC-free options due to the cold temperatures we’re installing in. We’ve literally had to install heat-applied block wall graphics in the snow and they’ve held really well. Of course, there are tips and tricks we use as installers and as you know, there’s no way to offer a warranty on these applications, so it's best to ALWAYS do everything you can do to prevent any future issues. We just simply don’t have the option to wait until it's 75* outside to do these installations. and your back is against the wall you can always call on your brothers and sisters of the wrap industry. LITERALLY THE WRAPFAM!!! Some of this wrap fam has developed some AMAZING products that make these monster projects so much more manageable and profitable. Products such as the bill collector squeegee, the blade cage, ways to make your propane torch more manageable, Magstrapz, different rollers for texture and rivets… I mean c’mon… for wrappers, by wrappers. You have The Wrap Institute and Wrap IQ at your fingertips. I even special order the zip ties, ratchet straps, and fiberglass rods (gripper poles) we use to install LARGE banners. This industry is GROWING and I freaking love it. It wouldn’t be possible to get this scale of project done without every person doing their job from top to bottom. I don’t say “top to bottom” in terms of ranking… simply front to back, end to end... everyone from the operations personnel at the ballparks to the graphic designers proofing the sponsor’s art files after hours in order to get approvals ready for first thing in the morning so that production teams can scramble to get things finished and QC’d and in our installer’s hands to be installed and crossed off of everyone’s list (it’s actually bonkers how great everyone is at their jobs)… there are early pick-up times and late deliveries so that typically takes extra time and effort... I often find myself making sure I have extra Red Bulls, water bottles, and granola bars in the truck on those late nights. We are constantly sharing our locations and ETAs with each other at certain checkpoints just to make sure no one is waiting on anyone, and that way everyone is getting the most out of the time

they’ve committed to their duties. Everyone is trying to save each other a few minutes of sleep, a few steps on their Apple watch, and the possibility of a decent meal with their family.

Again, much like a professional sports team, everyone on our team plays a certain role and has specific talents that we utilize come game time. I do my best to plan these long days and call these plays according to our strengths, but sometimes Mother Nature has a different game plan. One of my favorite quotes comes from a young, ruthless Mike Tyson, he said “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

This reigns true for installing baseball stadiums as well as any other large-scale project we’ve had on our plate... I am sure most of you can empathize

May 2024 l WrapFam Unleashed l 45

Opening Days THE STADIUM TOUR 2024

with this in your day-to-day tasks. The key, as we all know, is to roll with the punches and get that win. Always hit back harder than they hit you. All this means is that sometimes you have to share your coffee from your old Stanley thermos. Sometimes you need to take the crew out to lunch for a big fat burrito and take a mid-day breather. Sometimes that means we’re all working late and you’re left with whatever you were smart enough to pack in your Igloo lunch cooler (@stanley and @igloo if you’re reading this, I’m available for an influencer deal, but I’m not cheap) ... and if you’re lucky Taco Bell will still be open on your ride home (@tacobell go ahead and holla at ya boy as well ).

I guess being an installation-based company, the key to success is planning on not sticking to the plan... at all. As a “coach” or owner, you need to know the strengths of your team and understand at certain points you’ll be relying on them to come through in the clutch and win you a game, a day, or a certain portion of your project... and a good team will do that for you. You will learn who your clutch players are. You will want them to come in as your hottest closer throwing 100 mph in the 9th or pinch-hitting

in a game-winning situation with bases loaded. This is what the big games AND big jobs come down to... our players (installers) just take the field before any of the big leaguers do. The energy on these types of projects is uncanny... and I can’t help but believe it’s a similar energy to these big bats stepping up to the plate. Not everyone watching their favorite teams will look for the graphics in the background, but I certainly do. I’m sure anyone who has read this far also does the same thing. All I know is I love that when I watch the Chicago Cubs or the Chicago White Sox play baseball, I watch a lot more than baseball. I remember the looks on my team’s faces and I remember the efforts they put in during those grueling days. I love that I have friends and family who text me with pictures from the game. I love that I have stories about how things happened in those fields that no one else will understand.

I know it takes A LOT more than just large format graphics to put together a team and a baseball season. We have a small role in the success of a stadium, but we have a big role to play. My team and I understand that role and we play it pretty damn well, and we love it. Every year when we walk out of the stadium during the 11th hour, there’s a fresh buzz in the air, sometimes the players warming up and practice happening… my team is walking off the field as the big league pros are walking onto the field to warm up, all I can think in my head as I am leaving the parking lot is... “PLAY BALL!”

When one thinks of vinyl wraps, most often people think about vehicles. And they’re right! However, there is a huge world out there for event signage -- A world we’ve come to love.

At Shorty’s Wraps, we have been providing the Austin, Texas area with high-quality vinyl

wraps and building our reputation for fulfilling our customer’s branding needs with precision and care. With over a decade’s experience, we’ve been the exclusive signage provider for ACL Live at the Moody Theater, the W Hotel and other venues in the Austin area.

materials, branding opportunities and more. Because of the unique aspect of each space, the first place we start is what we call a discovery. Discovering a space is a time when we look at the area as a whole and determine what locations would promote big-impact branding

moments -- all while ensuring the vinyl in those areas does not harm the surfaces. Our goal is to maximize the potential of these spaces with the understanding these applications are temporary. Just like campground rules, leave the space as you found it. Material testing is conducted for optimal surface application, presentation and ease of installation/removal. In tandem, detailed measurements are gathered of all optional branding areas to have on file for future use. Sometimes all you need is a logo—but our goal is to craft an experience that will have onlookers leaving with a true understanding of the client’s brand.

To further upsell the venue’s signage options, we take the information gathered from the discovery and create a full branding deck. This deck includes floor plans with all suggested application sections highlighted and outlined. It also includes photos/renderings

of these exact areas to showcase visual examples. Not only is this a useful tool for the client, but it’s also a win-win relationship between us (as the vendor) and the venue.

Whether it’s automating files, building templates, or simplifying processes, efficiency is a crucial part of the production process. The discovery is the start of this efficiency plan. Gathering all information of the space in one fail swoop allows the ability to save time and energy in the future. Templates are generated for design and pre-press to allow a plug-and-go operation and materials are pre-selected for the suggested areas to save time in the production process. This method aids with installation and removal as it eliminates the questions of fit, bleed, etc. for a seamless completion of the project. All of the above are fantastic elements to utilize when producing a successful event application. But let’s take this one step

further. What’s a great wrap if the print is subpar? There are many touch points within a print that cannot be overlooked.

Color is synonymous with a brand so reproducing these colors is critical. Utilizing PMS color books and brand guidelines provided by clients, color prints are produced on all differing materials to ensure artwork matches brand colors as closely as possible. In some cases, clients provide a physical sample of the color they want to simulate. We’ve streamlined this process by pre-printing large panels of color swatches which help hone in that color quicker and more effectively.

Image resolution is just as important in delivering a high-quality print, especially for largescale installations. A blurry or pixelated image can counteract the message or overshadow the overall application. Using different techniques, like AI generation, to optimize the quality of these images helps bring a good design to one that stands out.

When it comes to saving time, printer and production management is where everything starts. Creating a print schedule to utilize not only work hours but also overnight hours speeds up the printing process by 10-fold. Keeping on top of daily printer maintenance and updates saves time and reduces the risk of printing failures. We also take advantage of the rip software’s nesting feature to save material and thus, time. And, where repeat applications are done using max metal, foamboard, or similar, those substrates are reused from one event to another to cut time in production and save from unnecessary waste. Keeping material waste to a minimum not only helps keep costs down but also helps utilize the materials to the max when global material shortages are at play. Now – our goal is always for a project to go as planned. But let’s be honest. Regardless of the detailed planning, unforeseen challenges do occur. That’s where problem-solving is key.

A scissor lift makes these wall jobs infinitely easier. Austin City Limits is a staple.

The ability to think on your toes and come up with solutions in a calm and controlled manner is what differentiates a good installer from a great installer. For instance, have you ever applied a panel upside-down on a large wall mural? All you can do is take a step back, assess and find an answer to best solve the issue. Impromptu changes will occur – it’s inevitable. But, having, and being prepared for, a plan B, C or D (especially where weather plays a part), will keep a controlled environment for the project, client and team as a whole. In addition, for times like SXSW where overlapping projects and tight turnarounds can easily overwhelm the staff, relying on like-minded installers who we can trust to come in and assist

with these high-caliber projects is a game changer. Our core values of Quality, Communication, Education and Commitment are the driving force to keep the standards we’ve developed at a high level. This high level of service is what keeps our clients coming back time and time again. And for us? Seeing our client’s reactions to a completed project is what drives us to keep going. Most clients don’t know, or even realize, the magnitude and impact vinyl can make within a space. Our goal is to promote this medium as a well-known resource throughout the event industry so when people ask, our client can answer. Yes! It IS a vinyl wrap.

in. I was there a lot helping my buddy with his race car. One day he loaded everything up and stopped doing it. I liked it enough that I went to my dad and discussed it. We looked into and the next thing I knew we were buying the equipment and I was in business. I started out with a 24" Roland plotter that I still have to this day. At the same time, I started refereeing high school soccer and basketball. I eventually got to where I was reffing college as well, in both sports and even did a little bit of pro soccer. I did that for 20 years while also trying to run a business. Eventually, my business got much busier and my kids got older and started playing competitive sports. So, I gave up the reffing and focused on my business. I had to find some way to pay for those competitive sports fees, lol. I started out doing cut vinyl on race cars. Eventually, I started getting into doing some storefront window graphics, business hours, metal signs and banners. It just grew from there. I can't tell you that there was any one point when I decided this was going to be my career.

I just knew I liked it and things were going well and the business continued to grow. The crazy thing about now vs back then is how much this industry has grown. I was self-taught back then. There weren't any videos to watch. Another sign shop wasn't going to help their competitor with any advice. I literally learned from my mistakes and I made plenty of them. I originally started in my hometown of Sedalia, MO. In 2000 my wife, Jennifer, and I got married and moved to Lee's Summit, MO, just outside of Kansas City, MO. I was very fortunate when I moved to Lee's Summit and started taking things more seriously and full-time. In 2008 I went to Fellers in Tulsa, OK and took their week-long training class. That was when I first started doing wraps. It wasn't until 2010 that I finally did my first actual wrap through my company and it grew from there. I loved the idea of wraps and I wanted to get better.

I kept seeing this one name that kept popping up in social media, magazines, and everywhere I looked. I finally started to look and see where he was from. When I started seeing articles with his address, it said Raymore, MO. I thought it was a typo. I found another article and it said the same thing. I still thought it was a typo. I finally found his website and it said Raymore, MO. I thought, how in the hell is there someone this popular in our industry and only 15 minutes away from me and I've never heard of him? I had to meet him. A couple of weeks later I had a meeting in Raymore and I went by his office after my meeting. I walked in and he said, how can I help you? I said, Mr. Ivers, my name is Chad Huhman and I've seen your name everywhere and when I saw that you were from Raymore, MO. I had to come to introduce myself and meet you. I walked out of there 3 hours later and we've been friends ever since. A week or two later he called me up and asked me if I would be interested in helping him with a project. I'm pretty sure before he finished the question I said "Fuck Yeah". This was a huge break for me! I used to

joke about how he paid me to train me. A lot of people didn't understand what I meant but every time I went to help him with a project he would teach me something and at the end of the day he paid me for helping him. Rob introduced me to so many things in the industry, knowledge, tools and yes, many people. He introduced me to Jim Miller, Justin Pate, The Duever Brothers, John and Joe, Paul Roba, Dave Harris and many more that I'm sure I'm forgetting. He also introduced me to Dirk Moebes who at the time was putting on a wrap contest at the tradeshows. Rob was the head judge and after a few years, they had asked me to help and be a judge as well. I turned it down at first but eventually started doing it. I loved it and eventually met a whole wrap family from doing it. Rob also used to be the instructor for the PDAA certification and eventually, we started using my shop for that

certification class. He talked me into getting PDAA certified but it wasn't easy for me. I hadn't been doing wraps for very long and I actually didn't pass the test the first time. He worked with me afterwards and I eventually passed the test. I've gone on to get more certifications since then which include Avery Dennison, ORAFOL, KPMF, FlexiShield and Fellers. I feel like I'm missing 1 or 2 but I still plan to get more.

One of the first pieces of advice I ever got was from another shop in my hometown of Sedalia, MO. His name was Steve Smith with Smith Signs. At the time I knew of him but had never met him. I was amazed by his work because he could hand paint, letter and pinstripe along with plotter-cut vinyl. One night, at a local establishment, a friend of mine introduced me to Mr. Smith. We had a brief conversation but he asked me how business was. I told him it was

busy ....sometimes too busy. He paused for a minute and said "Too busy huh?". I said, yeah, at times. He said I'm going to tell you something that someone told me a long time ago, "If you're too busy, you're not charging enough.". That has stuck with me ever since. It would be years later before I really listened to that advice but it always stuck with me. I finally figured it out later. For the new people getting into this industry, know your worth. Don't come in trying to undercut everyone's prices. There is PLENTY of work! Don't leave money on the table. Once you commit to a price it's very hard to raise your prices later. Remember, there's going to be another you that will come in and cut your prices as well.

I feel that my little bit of success has come from treating my customers as friends. I try to create a friendship with every one of my customers. I treat them with respect and

most importantly I try to show them that I care about their project and them. I once had a new customer come to me and he had his work truck that he wanted wrapped and a couple of race cars. Every time we talked, he would talk to me about his race cars first but then I would ask him about his work truck. He finally told me later, after I got his business that the reason he went with me as opposed to others he had been talking with as well, is that I cared more about his work truck and the thing that made him money to be able to race. The others just wanted to talk about doing his race cars and weren't even concerned about doing his work truck. Eventually, we became pretty good friends and he's sent quite a bit of business my way since. Treat them like people, not as just another customer.

NEVER STOP LEARNING Slays ISA at

The 2024 Never Stop Learning Contest, a collaboration between ISA and The Wrap Institute, was a huge success this year. And the best way to gauge this? All the smiles! They say bigger isn’t always better but the Never Stop Learning contest proved otherwise.

The contest this year was the biggest one to date. It went from 108 competitors to 135, 4 material manufacturers to 5 and $20,000 in prizes to over $45,000! In addition, we added The Wrap Institute Wrap Warrior Contest which

included our Bing Bing plates and balloon cutting challenge. We had a daily pinata smash-up with daily prizes given away for both. On day 2 we announced our official partnership with ISA which was extra special. We had two daily demos a day featuring Rainer Lorz. Finally, we celebrated The Wrap Institute's 10-year anniversary!

If you don’t know what the Never Stop Learning contest is it’s simply the funnest and most educational wrap contest in the world. It’s made up of 3 rounds per day. A top trainer from each manufacturer gets 3 participants

and gives them a free 75-minute workshop on how to wrap an object. The contest is open to any skill level so the groups are made up of true beginners to advanced installers. This facilitates an environment more focused on learning and sharing than competing.

At the end of the round the judges, this year Jim Miller and Austin Smith, assessed the quality of the wraps and, more importantly, asked them how much they learned about the film and process (at The Wrap Institute, we believe the best wrap professional is one that can wrap with high quality as well as knows the product details/process in and out). The team with the best combination of knowledge and skills was the winners!

The theme this year was Willy Wonka so everything was wrapped in candy and pastries. I even got to dress up as Willy Wonka, wrapper style of course. The objects to wrap this year were plexiglass cutouts, hoods, doors, a kitchen and recessed doors. The material varied as well from color change, PPF, cut vinyl and digital print cast/calendar films. Our trainers were dialed in the entire show:

• Krystal from Orafol

• Preston from General Formulations

• Marcelo from Hexis

• Andrew and Tanor from Briteline

• Dimas from Avery Dennison

The Wrap Institute team and ISA staff did an amazing job setting up and running the booth as always. We had local help from Candy Wraps and their staff helped take the booth to another level.

The show can’t go on without the top sponsors and this year they were: Avery Dennison, ORAFOL/KPMF, General Formulations, Briteline, Hexis, CWT Worktools, Mutoh, LX Hausys, Fedgrigoni, NT Cutter, POD steamer, Monkey Strips, Banana Buffers, The Rag Company and Diamond Protech.

Next year's Never Stop Learning contest will be back in Las Vegas at the ISA Sign Expo so be sure to register as soon as it opens. The waitlist to get in each round is always big so signing up early and locking in a spot is key.

The chance to learn from top trainers for free plus the chance to win amazing prizes is as good as it gets. It’s truly a special event to take part in as you can see from this overview of 2024 plus all the amazing pics by Tim Evans from Wrapper Mapper.

See you next year in Vegas and, in the meantime, Never Stop Learning!
