pring is the season of new beginnings and this year a momentous new chapter will commence as Willowsford Homeowners Association transitions to an all-resident Board of Directors, signifying the end of the Founder Control Period. Winding Down Willowsford Lane Development Team

by Mark Trostle, Executive Vice President, Willowsford Operations

The Lodge Pool – circa 2012

F

or the Willowsford Development Team 2020 is a milestone year, yet, leaves a bittersweet taste as we wind down our involvement in the community. At the onset of land development in September of 2010, there were just four of us working feverishly to establish not only the Founders’ vision for the look and character of the community, but also assemble our team of design consultants, landscape architects, civil engineers, etc. along with accounting systems, budget controls, office space and highly skilled staff. We had “inherited” several approved preliminary land plans that we found to be uninspired and needing significant overhauls. We set about redesigning the streets and lot layouts to take better advantage of the rolling topography, woods and views. However, as anyone

Spring2020

familiar with real estate investments knows, time is money so we began work on The Grange and The Grove as quickly as we could after obtaining the myriad plan approvals and permits necessary to turn a shovel of earth in Northern Virginia. We often (only half-) joked that our jobs were like “drinking from a firehose!” The initial focus was to establish the major entrances from existing roads, model lots, and the Info Centers where prospects would be introduced to the unique concepts of the Conservancy and Farm. We spent countless hours brainstorming on the amenities program, our entrance features and streetscape elements such as signage and fencing (especially the exact blend and masonry style of the stonework.) It really was a dream project for

the team to participate in the entire process of planning and design as well as the implementation of building the infrastructure, pools, clubhouses and extensive nature trails. Many long days were spent bushwhacking through seemingly remote woods and fields to blaze the paths of least resistance, or most visual interest. It wasn’t easy to obtain VDOT approval for old-fashioned steel truss bridges, but it was worth it. Now, after more than nine years developing one of the region’s premier communities, an award-winning “agrihood,” we find ourselves transitioning control of the Association and Conservancy to residents. We have only a few sections of lots left to develop in 2020 and anticipate our Builders being largely sold out a year from now. The last major amenity, Willow Grove Pond & Splash Park, will soon open in The Grove along with our final major trail addition, Pinewoods Loop. While the Development Team will continue to support the buildout of remaining homes and prepare streets for VDOT maintenance acceptance, we sense how this challenging endeavor is winding down. The Founders’ vision has been fulfilled, and our team is grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of achieving it. We trust you become great stewards.

The Board is elected by and accountable to the members and is responsible for the strategic direction and control of the Association. These volunteer Board members are a vital asset to Willowsford. The Board meets every other month at Sycamore House, alternating between daytime and evening meetings.

Daniella and Mario will serve up their award-winning cocktails alongside Latin-inspired tapas fresh from Willowsford Kitchen. Participants will discover the world of rum, explore fundamentals of flavor, practice mixing and shaking a proper cocktail, and learn which glass works best for each beverage. Shake, shake, shake! Willowsford’s Culinary Director, Chef Bonnie Moore says, “This mixology class will be so much fun for participants. Daniella and Mario are masters of flavor and will teach you everything you need to

During the two and a half hour class three distinctly different cocktails (Airmail, Guava Daiquiri, and Cuban Jungle) will be taught. Students will enjoy their liquid libations paired with specialties from Willowsford Kitchen such as Patatas Bravas with Chili Aioli and Beef Empanadas. Mario has been in the hospitality industry for over 10 years with a special concentration on food logistics, marketing, and corporate food and beverage. He is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. Colada Shop specialties include Cuban-inspired snacks and beverages ranging from Pastelitos (a Caribbean-style pastry) to Cuban coffees and cocktails. They also offer a full catering menu. Daniella and Mario describe their concept as, “at Colada Shop we bring people together by transporting them into a space where conversation is flowing, strong coffee is brewed, food and cocktails are made with the flare of Cuban flavor and life. Coladas and conversation go hand in hand.” They are committed to providing quality products, excellent service, and unparalleled hospitality to their patrons. Meet the Conolly Family Life in The Greens

Interview by Kacie Ward, HOA Communications Coordinator

W

e caught up with the Conolly family to learn all about their life in The Greens. Last summer they moved into a K. Hovnanian® home on Cullen Run Place. Read on to discover what brought them to Willowsford!

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourselves! A: Jay - Kasia and I met while we were both living and working in Manama, Bahrain, a small island off Saudi Arabia in the Persian Gulf. Not sure where that is? Same for us. We always joke that when we individually decided to move there, we had to look it up in a map just to see where it was. From the time we met in 2005 we’ve lived in Naples, Italy; Annapolis, Maryland; and Chicago, Illinois. Kasia currently works for Deloitte Global Risk and I own a business called Voyint that specializes in background investigation services. We have two daughters, Sophia (8) who is in second grade at Buffalo Trail Elementary School and Anna (4) who attends Good Beginnings School. I’m half Filipino and half American (with Irish ancestry) and Kasia is originally from Poland. So, our girls have a very diverse background. And yes, they also speak Polish too! Q: What does WillowsfordLife mean to you? Jay - For us, WillowsfordLife represents balance

A: between our professional careers and personal

lives. Prior to Willowsford, both Kasia and I were very accustomed to moving, largely for our careers. Throughout that journey we never really found the right community that aligned with our career ambitions and our family goals. Moving to Willowsford was a perfect fit. The families that we’ve met here

Spring2020

are all very friendly and all share something in common with us whether it’s business related, family, or simply hobbies and interests. Our girls have made more friends than ever before. We really feel that WillowsfordLife is the sense of community we’ve been looking for.

Q: If you had to pick a favorite space in your house, what would it be?

A: Kasia - This is an easy one—our kitchen! We

love to cook and entertain regularly. We’re in the kitchen every day as a family whether it’s just hanging out or cooking a new dish. Our favorite food to cook is Italian, since we spent three years in Naples. That said, we’re always experimenting with other styles of food, including homemade Polish food.

Q: What is your favorite neighborhood memory? A: Jay - One of the first gatherings we attend-

ed was a neighborhood “porch hop” where a handful of neighbors set-up food, drinks, and activities on their porch, as a way to meet other neighbors. We’d never heard of this activity before and were excited about getting out and meeting everyone. To no surprise, the event was fantastic— great food and great conversations. I think the kids had the best time because it gave them an excuse to run around the neighborhood and explore. But what made it so memorable was that we were supposed to “hop” from porch to porch. Instead, once people got to the first house, we never moved on to the next! Ultimately everyone just converged on the first house with their food and drinks and stayed there all

Family Feature Photo Location

Can you spot this Willowsford amenity? Photos were taken at Cedar Pond & Pavilion in The Greens. Nestled in the woods with easy access from the trail and nearby campsite, Cedar Pond & Pavilion is ideal for watching wildlife, fishing, and picnicking. The rustic Pavilion is home to various Conservancy programs and educational events and can also be rented by residents for small gatherings. evening. At one point it started to rain and everyone packed into the garage and kept the party going. Just imagine all of your neighbors in one person’s garage. It was great!

Q: How do you stay involved? A: Kasia - Between Willowsford events and

amenities, our kids’ school activities and clubs (ballet, ice skating, girl scouts), and work-related business events we always have a full calendar, maybe too full. One of our favorite things about Willowsford, and Northern Virginia in general, is that there’s no shortage of things to do. As a Navy veteran, Jay is actively involved in a couple different local Veteran organizations. I am also involved with the Polish Embassy and often volunteer for events that take place in Northern Virginia.

Q: What is your favorite Willowsford amenity? A: Jay - One of our favorite things to do is jogging. We routinely go on runs either through the trails near our house, or around the neighborhood. If you’re ever in The Greens, there’s a good chance you may see us running around. It’s a great area for jogging, walking, or biking and we love taking advantage of it. Q: What is your ideal way to spend a weekend? 22

A: Kasia - Honestly, our favorite thing is to stay

local and enjoy the community. The girls really enjoy playing with their friends in the neighborhood, so just staying in sometimes makes for the best weekend. We also enjoy exploring the area and checking out new places, particularly the rural areas west of us. If there happens to be some down time we’re always up for exploring new shops, vineyards, breweries, and restaurants in the area. We’re definitely foodies and love trying out new places!

Q: What makes your family special? A: Sophia - We do so many things together like

seeing movies, playing sports, and exploring new places. We also travel a lot, especially since we have family in both the U.S. and Europe. My sister and I travel to Europe every year, which I think is really awesome. Both of us love flying on airplanes!

Q: What is the best thing about having a sister? A: Anna - I love playing with all her toys and her older friends.

Do you know a family that should be featured in the next issue of WillowsfordLife? We are looking for candidates that have a unique, interesting story to share and are actively involved in the community! Nominate a fellow household by emailing HOA@willowsford.com.

Brew Club Spotlight by Brew Club Admins

rew Club was founded in 2016 to bring like-minded beer enthusiasts together to share beer, breweries, and homebrews with neighbors. We meet quarterly to promote beer-centric social events. Here we truly believe life is BREWtiful!

B

Early last year, Brew Club hosted a Bourbon Barrel Beer Tasting in conjunction with the Willowsford Bourbon Club. Members were treated to a presentation by Wes Nick, Brewmaster at The Farm Brewery at Broad Run. Wes shared a number of his brewing experiences with us. In addition to Bourbon Barrel selections, members enjoyed sharing their favorites, including great home brews from our Willowsford neighbors! Also in 2019, Glory Days catered a baseball-themed event in April and the best dressed fan won a Glory Days gift card. We also met with the co-founder of Solace Brewing Company in Sterling, VA, Jon Humerick, and enjoyed a tour of the brewery, tastings, and food. We had so much fun we even stayed for Trivia Night! Several fun summer events were hosted including a pot-

luck at The Lodge (featuring our favorite Summer Shandies), a meetup at The Farm Brewery at Broad Run, and a pool party and barbeque hosted at one of our members’ home. These events were a great opportunity to meet neighbors with an affinity and appreciation for beer. We kicked off 2020 with an event at The Lodge where members enjoyed a presentation from a guest speaker representing Old Bust Head Brewery in Warrenton, VA. Brew Club is planning several more social events and road trips to local breweries throughout the year. Most social events are potlucks where everyone brings a dish and beverages to share. Plans are also in the works to design a Brew Club polo shirt! There are no membership fees to join Brew Club and we welcome all Willowsford residents. If you would like to be added to the distribution list for upcoming events, please reach out to willowsfordbrewclub@ gmail.com. Be sure to follow Brew Club on our Facebook Page or through the Willowsford Weekly.

Cheers to Willowsford!

Ground Works Operations Team

by Matt Murphy, HOA Operations Field Manager

T

he Association is continually performing various upkeep and service tasks to maintain a healthy environment and great looking community. As we look ahead to the coming excitement of spring and summer, these warm-weather months bring a large amount of work and tasks for the operations team to both manage and perform. Tasks not only include work on the common areas of HOA property, but also on the buildings as we properly maintain these beautiful works of architecture. As you can see from the general timeline there is a tremendous amount of work and coordination that goes into keeping the 2,000+ acres of greenspace beautiful. This collaboration includes HOA staff, Conservancy staff, Developer staff, and our landscaping crews. In addition, there are always many tree issues in the wooded areas. We strive to take care of said issues in a timely manner while maintaining the natural beauty. These areas create wonderful habitat for native species and enhance the environment.

Spring2020

Once Memorial Day hits, the fun begins with the pools opening. We are looking forward to the grand opening of Willow Grove Pond & Splash Park located in The Grove. The warm months are a wonderful time to enjoy the vast trails with hopes of spotting some of our wildlife neighbors. Local anglers will be out at the various ponds trying

DRC Seasonal Favorites by Paul Jeannin, DRC Member any of you know me as a member of the DRC and reviewer of your Exterior Modification Application. Hopefully as you drive through the community you are impressed by the quality of the outdoor projects our residents have implemented. As a Landscape Architect I’m always on the look-out for new plants and improved varieties. Like many of you, I enjoy gardening and incorporating these species into my own yard. Here are three of my seasonal favorites!

The grass will reseed and after several years as the base grows wider you can split it into a few smaller plants and do so again in a few more years! Just take care so that it does not become invasive. Black-Eyed Susans Rudbeckia hirta I always like to include native species and why not start thinking of seasonal color? This pe-

rennial provides for a long bloom season of June to October. They can grow to over three feet tall and the flowers have a diameter of two to three inches. Butterflies, bees, and other insects are attracted to the flowers for their nectar. Black-eyed Susans are good for borders and can even be used in containers. This is a hardy perennial that provides enjoyment throughout the summer! Cherry Dazzle Dwarf Crepe Myrtle Lagerstroemia ‘Gamad’ If you are looking for an alternative to Red Knock Out Roses, then perhaps consider the Cherry Dazzle Crepe Myrtle. It’s a dwarf crepe myrtle in a compact shape! It has good disease resistance and cold hardiness. They are fast growing with clusters of bright red blooms from July to September. The blooms attract hummingbirds and butterflies through the summer months. The Cherry Dazzle keeps a shrub like form which makes for a nice border, an accent along a fence and for accent color in a foundation landscape.

Open Space Encroachments How to Avoid a Violation by Iris Gestram, Conservancy Executive Director photo: Oya Simpson

any residents chose a home in Willowsford because of its vision as a community integral with its natural setting. Throughout the community, the HOA maintains ample spaces as parks and recreation areas for play and relaxation. Furthermore, the HOA strives to reduce chemical applications and costly mowing that would be needed to maintain preserved open space as manicured lawns. Forests and meadows, ponds and streams, plants and wildlife all make Willowsford such a special place to live.

M

The Conservancy, which manages most of Willowsford’s natural areas, was formed to be the long-term steward of our open space. A core part of its mission is the preservation of

Spring2020

natural areas for recreation and education as well as habitat for wildlife and native vegetation. Regardless of whether an open space parcel is managed by the HOA or Conservancy, it cannot be maintained, altered, planted or claimed in any way by residents. Willowsford has seen an increase in what we assume are well-intentioned efforts to maintain or plant open spaces that effectively expand individual yards past the homeowner’s property line. This cannot be permitted for many reasons including liability, ecological damage, inconsistent appearance, and out of respect for the larger community. If left unchecked it seems that some residents would continue to encroach further and further and claim the

common areas for personal use. Therefore, the HOA and Conservancy will continue comprehensive enforcement to prevent such intrusions into open space. If an open space encroachment is observed, any unauthorized landscaping, play equipment or other private property must be removed and mowing or other maintenance must cease. Habitat must be restored to its original condition at the homeowner’s expense. This may include, but is not limited to, removal of landscaping, re-seeding of ground cover, and re-planting of native trees and shrubs. Continuing violations will be subject to enforcement which may include monetary charges and the suspension of amen-

willowsfordconservancy.org. Conservancy employees can arrange for a site visit to review proposed habitat improvements and share guidelines under which such improvements may be acceptable. Natural open space serves many purposes. It contributes to cleaner air, soil and water, provides a visual buffer, pre-

vents erosion, and is critical habitat for many species of native plants and wildlife. To learn more about the Conservancy’s work, receive information, or get involved with volunteer work, please contact us or visit our website at WillowsfordConservancy.org.

Season’s Eatings From the Farm

by Ashley Stallings-Swensen, Sales & Marketing Manager

S

pring is just beginning to flirt with the Farm in March, but we’ve been preparing for the 2020 season since the coldest winter days, planting the seeds that will become your next meals and hatching new ideas. Over time, a better layout in the packing area becomes reality, our new delivery truck is chosen, and field maps turn into crop plans. There is an energy spilling through our crew, built by the excitement of a new season and the desire to grow even better food and offering more to our community of neighbors. Things in store for 2020 include… • Feathered Fosters: In April our Feathered Fosters Program begins. We’ll once again send home pairs of baby chicks for you to raise for a week. It is an incredible way to participate in life on Willowsford Farm while gaining deeper appreciation for the source of your food. • Farm Camp: In July, we’ll offer two full weeks of Farm Camp in conjunction with the Willowsford HOA. See pg. 19 for details! • Volunteer Opportunities: Farm-ily members can join us out in the fields for opportunities to help harvest watermelons, winter squash and sweet potatoes. • U-Pick Pumpkins: Fall will offer pumpkins from our farmland in The Grant. Why just know your farmer? Step into the fields and experience the same exhilaration we feel each day! • Farm Tours: 2020 will include opportunities to see livestock on our Farm Tours. Now that the breeding program for our heritage Tamalitsa pigs,

Spring2020

along with our laying hens, is taking place at The Grange, learn how we raise our animals, and why we think it’s so important. To keep summer lively, we have another surprise headed your way. In the spirit of friendly competition, we introduce the Willowsford Village Challenge: a contest to see which street in each of the four villages has the highest rate of membership in our CSA program! The winning streets will be invited to a private feast on the Farm with our team as we celebrate the “C” in Community Supported Agriculture. As you think about friends and neighbors who might enjoy local, fresh, Certified Organic veggies, remember that our online CSA platform (Harvie) rewards you for sharing your Willowsford Farm love. On your Harvie member profile page, choose “Refer A Friend.” Click on the unique hyperlink and post to your social media, or send in an email, to invite friends to join our Farm community. For each new member who uses your link to sign up for a Willowsford Farm share, you’ll receive $25 in member credits ... and so will they!

To sign up for your own share, visit our CSA website at Harvie.mx/2020-willowsford! The new Starter Share is perfect for those beginning their CSA journey. In addition to new pickup locations we now offer home delivery exclusive to Willowsford residents! We offer fruits weekly in all shares, locally sourced meat, milk and flowers in addition to personalized shares of organic veggies and fresh eggs— built around your individual preferences, with more of what you do like and nothing that you don’t. Cheers, Farm-ily, to the farm@willowsfordfarm.com beginning of another delicious WillowsfordFarm.com season!
