A May Bouquet

“That is one good thing about this world... there are always sure to be more springs.”
L.M. MONTGOMERY

Hello, Willowsford community residents,

May, with its blossoming flowers and warming days, brings a sense of renewal and unity to our lives.

In case you haven’t noticed, spring is springing! Or has it sprung? Either way, welcome to the May edition of your official community publication, Stroll Willowsford.

This cheerful month brings us one of my very favorite holidays: Mother’s Day. This day holds a special place in our hearts as a time dedicated to celebrating and honoring the women who have played pivotal roles in nurturing, guiding and supporting us throughout our lives.

And that’s not all: May is brimming with significance. We also pay tribute to the brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country on Memorial Day. It’s a time of

reflection, appreciation and togetherness, and we are honored to share it with you.

Within the pages of this month’s issue, you’ll find personal stories and photos featuring your neighbors and friends, and reliable and reputable business partner information. As always, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated business partners whose unwavering support ensures each issue of Stroll Willowsford reaches your doorstep. We encourage you to support them as they support us.

May’s celebration of bloom and rebirth also serves as a reminder to our residents: your contributions and participation breathe life into this publication. Whether you’ve shared a story, attended a Stroll event, or simply engaged with your fellow neighbors, your presence enriches our lives.

Thank you for being an integral part of Stroll Willowsford, and we look forward to the adventures that await us in the month of May and beyond.

Best,

Publisher and Owner Stroll Willowsford traci.pasqualone@n2co.com 703-201-7550

DO YOU HAVE A STORY OR PICTURE TO SHARE IN A FUTURE ISSUE OF STROLL WILLOWSFORD?

Contact Publication Manager, and resident Billie Rose, at billie.rose@n2co.com or at 423-580-6142. It’s easy to participate. You can either write the article yourself or let us do the work. Our Stroll Willowsford Junior Writer Team or resident adult writers love the opportunity to put together a neighbor’s story!

The HOA and Conservancy have shared concerns with Loudoun County leadership regarding Dulles South Community Park current plans that will affect Willowsford and local traffic. The next opportunity for community engagement to impact this decision will be during the Special Exception (SPEX) meetings hosted by the Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces (PROS) Board. We will keep you posted and provide details for the hearings when available.

Recently, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has responded to numerous calls from residents whose vehicles tampered with. Hip Hip Hooray,

So much is happening at the Conservancy in May!

May is a month to be celebrated, not only are the days warmer, but it’s the time of year when the seasonal offerings from the Farm start to become more diverse, the trails abundant with bird song, and the campgrounds alive with the flutter of community enjoying an unplugged night outdoors with family and friends.

Farm Stand Seasonal Re-Opening + Hiking Spree Challenge Kickoff Event

To celebrate this month, you are invited to join the Conservancy at the seasonal re-opening of the Farm Stand located in the Grange Village, Thursday, May 16 from 4 – 7 PM and Saturday, May 18 from 9 AM – 1 PM. The celebration over the course of the two days will include a variety of offerings: wagon ride Farm tours, a greenhouse seeding demo, a food truck, a visiting local brewery, music, veggie tattoos, native plant sales, a chance to hang out with Farmer Deb’s goats, nature-based crafts, and the opportunity to sample partner products – think local cheese, gluten-free pies, hummus, granola, syrup and more.

Celebrating alongside the Farm Team will be the Land Stewardship team kicking off the popular Hiking Spree Challenge!

More details about the re-opening and Farm Stand engagement opportunities can be found on the events page of the Conservancy website.

“We’re really looking forward to having the Farm Stand open again. This year, we’re adding a children’s corner with farm and nature books, native plants, Loudoun Grown favorites, ready-to-eat fruit and ice cream, and visits from local producers and partners. We’re expecting to see folks hang around for longer than a quick shopping trip.”

Speaking Of Challenge, Are You Up To It?!

Spring is in full swing and there is no better time to get outside - we are taking advantage of the warmer weather by hitting the Willowsford trails, and we are inviting you to do the same!

With the many diverse trails throughout Willowsford (40 miles in total!), there is an abundance to explore and see, no matter which Village you reside in; that being said, on May 16, we will kick off the Willowsford Conservancy Hiking Spree with our friends at the Farm Stand! Campsite Season Is Here, Reserve Today And Save!

One of the best aspects of living in Willowsford is the ability to pitch a tent and enjoy the outdoors close to home. The Conservancy offers two types of camping opportunities. The Grant Family Campground and Hidden Meadow.

Grant Family Campground is a wonderful space for camping newbies, families, and friends looking to gather and create new memories. The site includes a natural playscape, outdoor games, and is heavily wooded, giving ample shelter on those sizzling summer days. In addition to the camping pad, you will also have access to firewood, port-a-potties, and a handwashing station. Do you have a Scout camping badge you would like to earn – or would you like to gather with a group of friends and rent a few sites so you can enjoy a group campfire?

abundant wildlife. The 3-mile multiuse asphalt trail alongside Everfield Drive is great for biking, strolling, in-line skating, or jogging.

Hidden Meadow, located in The Greens Village is a larger site that can easily accommodate as few as one or a hundred tents. Surrounded by dense red cedars, this hidden field is an ideal setting for community events, and for large families and other groups to experience camping adventures or an evening bonfire within the “wilds of Willowsford.”

With a rustic pavilion, group-style fire pits, potable water and electricity, and space to accommodate tents of any size, Hidden Meadow is wellsuited for larger group campouts including family gatherings, cookouts, small concerts, scout jamborees, and similar gatherings. The site features Conservancy programs and events such as the annual Bonfire and Campover and is available for rent by residents and resident-sponsored groups.

The Grant Family Campground is the place for you!

This campground also provides opportunities for hiking, nature exploration, and wildlife watching. The 8-mile Grant Loop trail passes through wetlands, forests, meadows, and agricultural lands. This moderate to difficult trail is suitable for walking, trail running, and mountain biking, and features low-water crossings, rustic bridges, scenic vistas, and

HONORING FELIX TAO

THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE VIRGINIA INSTITUTE FOR SURGICAL ARTS

Did you know that Willowsford has its very own Storm Trooper? His name is Felix Tao, and he is my neighbor living in the Grove! He is a part of two different organizations

that do charity work supporting children and those in need. They’re called the 501st Legion and the Theresa Sondra Jacobs (TSJ) Foundation.

The 501st Legion states that it is “an international

promotes interest in STAR WARS™ and facilitates the use of these costumes for contribution to the local community through costumed charity and volunteer work.” Felix built his own moviegrade costumes, which he wears to bring good to our community through volunteering at events.

Locally, they have gone to children’s hospitals in costume to help make the kids happy while they go through treatment. While doing so, they help raise money for children’s causes like the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The 501st teamed up with a local police department to help with programs targeting at-risk youth; aimed at bringing joy using Star Wars costumes. They go to local parades, events, and even car shows. Mr. Felix has a love for all things Star Wars, and he uses that love to bring joy. You might find him at the Udvar Hazy Air and Scare event during October or Volunteering with local police departments to do events. For more information on the 501st Local Legion, visit their home page at www.501st.com.

The second organization Mr. Felix volunteers with is the TSJ Foundation. It is a non-profit educational organization that provides a unique sci-fi/fantasythemed S.T.E.A.M. experience for kids, often through Robotics. The TSJ Foundation I-ARTS mobile classroom delivers an exciting galactic mobile-themed experience using animatronics and themed vehicles to excite children into learning.

NOTABLE NEIGHBOR

This program is used at schools, hospitals, afterschool programs, and camps, to teach children about the different subjects in S.T.E.A.M. Mr. Felix participates in some of these events in his costume to make the S.T.E.A.M. events more fun for kids. Many of you know the TSJ fleet of vehicles; have you seen the Darth Vader Hummer roaming through the neighborhood? Yes, it’s the one with the fog, the Storm Troopers mounted on the back, and the music! Or the X1 Tie Fighter Black Camaro? We’re lucky enough to get to see them often, as they sometimes come to Mr. Felix’s house before events.

On most weekends, Mr. Felix is planning for events, participating in events, or creating new costume parts for one of these organizations. Mr. Felix says his favorite events are those supporting sick kids and the Halloweenthemed events where he can bring his love of Star Wars to the party! If the community is interested, you can make a request to each of these groups on their websites if you have an event you want them to attend. We are so grateful to have our very own Storm Trooper next door who works so hard to try to bring joy and learning to kids.

Do you know somebody who consistently puts others before themselves and supports others in need, whether large or small, but often flies under the radar? To nominate a fellow neighbor for this honor, send an email to billie.rose@strollmag.com.

Meet the Principal:

An interview with Leigh Boyd of Henrietta Lacks Elementary School!

Have you heard of Pinebrook Elementary? No? Well, I was a student there when I was younger. We had a really great Assistant Principal there named Mrs. Boyd. Well, guess what? There is a new school opening next door to Hovatter called Henrietta Lacks Elementary, and she is going to be the new Principal there! Let’s ask her some questions and get to know our new neighborhood Principal!

We’re excited about the neighbor school opening next to Hovatter this fall! Can you tell us more about it?

Henrietta Lacks Elementary is LCPS’ first and only primary school! We look forward to serving students in kindergarten through 2nd grade, and some pre-school students as well. We also are excited to create a larger school community as we partner closely with Hovatter Elementary, which will serve students in grades 3 – 5.

Recently, the community voted on the mascot and we are officially the Henrietta Lacks Elementary Honey Bees! At Henrietta Lacks Elementary, we look forward to creating a fantastic school experience for our youngest learners, where a passion for learning is sparked daily!

Henrietta Lacks Elementary was named after Henrietta Lacks, who

was a hero in the health world and unknowingly helped the medical world make many advances in treating illness and disease. Her legacy lives on through her cells, which are still used daily in the medical world. In a way, honey bees are similar to Henrietta Lacks as they unknowingly leave behind a legacy in the many beautiful plants they pollinate each year, which ensures our world thrives!

What made you want to work at this school?

Becoming the principal of Henrietta Lacks Elementary generated massive excitement as it is a chance to create a school culture that does what is right for the students and community every day. Being a primary-only school enables everything to be tailored to the developmental needs of the students to ensure learning is engaging, fun, and builds a strong set of academic and social foundational skills that will enable students to be successful in their future endeavors. Essentially, this is an opportunity of a lifetime to have a significantly positive impact on so many lives. I am beyond excited to work in a school with a team of highly dedicated educators who are passionate about creating rigorous and authentic learning experiences, where our youngest

students learn how to advocate for their needs, set goals, and reflect on progress. Our youngest learners “can” and creating an atmosphere that focuses on the “can” is of utmost importance.

What are you looking forward to most about the school opening?

Having fun with the students! I think being able to focus on the younger age group of students really creates an opportunity to make learning and school fun and engaging. I look forward to laughing and learning with the students every day. I love being silly and bringing a smile and joy to everyone in the school community.

What did you do before coming to the new school?

Before being offered the Principal position at Henrietta Lacks Elementary, I served as the Assistant Principal at Pinebrook Elementary. In the role, I was honored to collaborate closely with Hovatter Elementary and build relationships with many of the families and students in the community. Prior to that I taught both grade 2 and grade 3. I love teaching and discovering strategies to help each student have “light bulb” moments to grow their confidence as learners.

Tell us about when you’re not being a principal! What do you do in your spare time?

Outside of school, I am a busy person! I live in Haymarket with my husband Adam and 4-year-old daughter, Makenzie. I love spending time outdoors with them, exploring new hiking trails or playgrounds. I have also been passionate about horses since I was born and even went to college for Equestrian Science, which I have a Bachelor’s degree in. I love to compete in 3-phase eventing, which consists of dressage, cross country, and stadium jumping. You can usually find me at the barn with Makenzie (who also loves riding) after school enjoying time with the horses. Aside from my family and horses, I love to read at the end of each day. I enjoy fiction books and especially love reading mysteries!

I am originally from upstate New York and love the snow (as long as I have warm clothes to wear). In the summer, I enjoy visiting the 1,000 Islands of NY and spending time with my family at our cottage.

Is there anything families can do if they want to find out more, and be involved in, the new school?

I am eager to get parents and families as involved as possible! I have been sending out newsletters every other month with details on a variety of school initiatives. I am excited to engage in an evening of relationship and culture-building with the school community in preparation to open Henrietta Lacks Elementary. Additionally, we are looking to establish business partnerships to sponsor some items for Henrietta Lacks Elementary. The school’s website (https://www.lcps.org/Henrietta) is up and running as well, and we have been adding information there

for families! If you haven’t had the chance to complete the input survey, we are still accepting responses. This provides an opportunity to ensure you have a voice in the vision and values being developed at Henrietta Lacks Elementary. As we get closer to the start of school, there will be more community events scheduled, opportunities to volunteer to prepare the school to open, and the staff will be working to identify ways to ensure families are welcomed at the school and become true partners in their child’s education. Being a primary school, there will be many unique opportunities to be involved in the school and your child’s education, so I encourage families to be on the lookout

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

Just that I am so excited to meet all the students and families and appreciate all the valuable input families have been providing. I can’t wait for the first day of school. Get ready to have fun (and learn) at Henrietta Lacks Elementary!

Do you have an event, topic or educator that should be highlighted in our “Education” feature? Email billie.rose@strollmag.com!

Here’s the newly announced mascot of Henrietta Lacks Elementary School! There are some fun and thoughtful distinctions between it and the Hovatter Honeybee:

• The color of the bee’s glasses are part of Henrietta Lacks Elementary’s school colors

• One schoolbook is titled “Heroes of Health” – this is a tribute to Henrietta Lacks, as she is a hero in the health world, and a cervical cancer symbol represents her legacy in the medical community as well.

• A Plants book was added as it is a standard in lower grades, and the flower image on the book was pulled directly from the dress pattern Henrietta Lacks is wearing in her portrait featured at the National Portrait Gallery!

K&H Landscape & Grounds Maintenance

Changing Willowsford lawns, one landscape at a time

K&H LANDSCAPING is a premier landscape design company in Northern Virginia – specifically serving both Loudoun and Fairfax County residents. Established in 1984, the company takes pride in its local ownership and management. Specializing in landscape design, installation, and maintenance, K&H caters to both residential and commercial clients, crafting outdoor living spaces that are not only functional but also captivating and cherished by its clientele.

“As a landscaping company serving the Stroll community, connecting with residents is about more than just maintaining lawns; it’s about building trust, fostering a sense of unity, and giving back to the place we call home,” says Kimball Allen, the marketing specialist for K&H. “We strive to create a beautiful and inviting outdoor living space for everyone in Willowsford, one landscape at a time.”

Their highly rated landscape contractors are often known to take numerous design features and elements into account when helping homeowners reimagine and transform their outdoor living areas, explains Kimball. They consider softscape and hardscape to create a well-balanced custom design. Softscape is anything soft in the yard that is living and grows. Examples include flowers, shrubs, grass, succulents, and trees. Hardscape includes non-living items such as bricks, stones, concrete, walkways, and patios.

“Our expert landscaping contractors are licensed, bonded, insured, and more than capable of providing you with a quality and gorgeous landscape design. More importantly, sticking to your landscaping budget is just as important to us as making sure you have a design that is worth your investment,” Kimball adds.

Having a clear understanding of the client’s vision is of utmost importance, explains Kimball.
30 May 2024

To get the ball rolling on a client’s project, a meeting will first be arranged to understand the needs and wants of the property. Having a clear understanding of the client’s vision is of utmost importance, explains Kimball. “We conduct a site visit to better understand your lawn maintenance needs and assess whether our annual plan will be the right fit for your home. If we determine there’s an appropriate fit, and once the agreement is signed, our capable team will work year-round to ensure that we can meet and exceed your expectations.”

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when working with K&H. The team will create a personalized portfolio for each client’s unique situation. Lawn maintenance services include mowing, mulch services, weeding, leaf clean up, irrigation care, signature turf, and shrub and tree care.

When contemplating the need to engage a professional for the upkeep of your lawn, it’s important to recognize the common oversights of individuals managing their own lawn. When you work with K&H, you’ll not only receive service but will be educated on proper lawn care techniques, such as

watering instructions and the importance of tree pruning for turf health. “Aftercare plays a significant role in maintaining the beauty and vitality of lawns, and ensuring that homeowners are equipped with the necessary knowledge is important,” Kimball further explains. “Similarly, many clients may not realize the impact of shaded areas caused by overgrown trees on their lawn’s health. By emphasizing the significance of tree pruning to prevent shading and promote optimal turf growth, we can help homeowners achieve and maintain lush, vibrant lawns throughout the year.”

Whether you’re looking to add visual interest to your backyard escape or schedule responsible upkeep to have the lawn looking its best, you can trust K&H Landscape and Ground Maintenance. As a Willowsford sponsor, the company will have your best interest in mind.

The Sky’s The Limit:

A soaring conversation about a lifetime of love for the air above!

We have all heard the roar of a plane flying over our house. Most have been on a plane but few have actually flown a plane. For many that would be a dream but for resident and Lieutenant Colonel William Kennedy it’s a reality. Will Kennedy is currently a retired Air Force pilot who flew the A-10 ‘’ Warthog” ThunderBolt ll for an astounding 22 years. He currently flies commercially for United Airlines and has flown with United Airlines for 8 years. 13-year-old Will saw his first glimpse of planes on none other than The Discovery Channel. He had been watching a show called Wings and had fallen in love with planes from then on. He asked his dad to go on a flight. His dad had a friend who was a pilot, so one day he took William on his first flight. Will was in love and after that first flight he begged and begged for another flight but his parents said no. Nothing could stop William Kennedy from flying though, so every so often he would tell his parents that he was going to ride his bike. Secretly Will would ride up to the airport and take a flying lesson for a few hours and then ride back home.

All of his hard work paid off and when he was 15: just two years after his first flight, Will flew his first solo. Practice, practice, and more practice is the key to getting better at flying. Will kept up this hard work; he got better and started to love planes more and more, so he decided to go to EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University. After studying there William entered the Air Force and climbed the ranks to become Lieutenant Colonel William Kennedy.

After retiring from the Air Force after 22 years of serving, William decided to not end his flight career there. After being accepted by United Airlines he started flying commercially. I interviewed Will and asked his thoughts about how to get prepared or interested in flying. “Read,” he said. “Just read and learn about planes. The more you know the better. A fun activity is going to a small airport near you and watching the functions of how a plane lands, takes off and just flying in general!”

"Our family knows the high cost of repairing and maintaining your vehicle. My experience gained at a major auto dealership I know to exceed the expectation of each customer that comes through the door, whether for the first time or for a return visit. Let us care for you and your car. "

WHAT DRIVES US?

WHAT IS YOUR PREDICTION FOR THE 2024 HOME SELLING SEASON?

Michelle: In overall market dynamics, we’re seeing interest rates hold people back. Many don’t want to give up their 3% interest rates for rates over 6%. That’s why there is limited supply in the market.

Deborah: And I think we’ll continue to have signi cantly more demand as inventory remains tight. I also believe as interest rates drop; we’ll continue to see more buyers than sellers. Michelle, what do you speci cally think about the Willowsford market?

“...many Willowsford homes are hitting the sweet spot when people start to move”

Michelle: Because 47% of homeowners reside in their homes between 6 and 10 years, we will start to see Willowsford homes turnover. The original Willowsford owners purchased in 2012 and many homes are hitting the sweet spot when people start to move. In the short run for Willowsford, there will be limited inventory, but I think there may be a backlog of homes that people want to sell.

Deborah: In this selling season, I believe Willowsford sellers will be very successful and pro table with limited inventory and high demand.

Michelle: Agreed. We expect home appreciation again with multiple offers. I think in the coming years we’ll see more Willowsford homes on the market.

EID EXTRAVAGANZA

Celebrating joyous traditions in Pakistan

EID IS THE BEST Muslim celebration in Islamic calendar. There are two different types of Eid. The two different Eid Muslims celebrate are, Eid-ulFitr and Eid-ul-Adha. Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated after the month of Ramadan (month of fasting). On the other hand, Eid-ul-Adha is a celebration of Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice of his son (in the name of God), who turned into a sheep when he attempted to sacrifice him. In order to honor this event, Muslims all over the world sacrifice an animal (such as goat, camel, sheep, cow or buffalo). The meat is then shared amongst family, friends, neighbors and the poor.

In June 2023 when I went to Pakistan, I celebrated Eid-ul-Adha with my cousins and we sacrificed two goats. On first day, I went to pray at the mosque after which I witnessed the sacrifice at my grandparents’ house. Later, I met with my cousins and we had dinner together. We also exchanged Eid presents and played games. Second day of Eid, we barbecued some meat to make kabobs. It was a 3 day celebration. My little sister Zoha had her first Henna which was a drawing of a flower.

During my trip to Pakistan, I went to a science museum called ‘MagnifiScience Center’. It had many

cool science exhibits and also had areas to tell about Pakistan culture. We also went to a Chirpy Bird park with many colorful birds. One type of bird you could hold but only adults were allowed. They also had a small amusement park inside the mall, which I really loved. I really loved the pizza there because the crust was fluffy and had so many interesting flavors like chicken tikka.

Every year I look forward to celebrating Eid with my family and friends. It also brings a lot of joy by sharing the sacrifice and presents with the people in need. I had an amazing time in Pakistan and wish to go back soon.

AT TYSON’S CORNER, a new toy store opened in December, called Camp. But it doesn’t just sell toys! You can buy a ticket and go behind an unassuming bookshelf to play in a special secret attraction. Right now, the experience is Encanto-themed!

Everything is exactly like what you’d expect in a kid-friendly version of the Casita. In Luisa’s room, there was a skee ball game, along with decorations of clouds and unicorn donkeys – two you could ride! Isabella’s room was covered in flowers and petals. You could twirl on a little seat ride, tap out beats on

some flowers, sit on the hanging bed, or spin in a giant flower. In Antonio’s room, there was a miniature playground, decorated in a jungle theme with lots of cute, friendly animals. There was also Casita’s nursery where Mirabel stayed, decorated with her own art like a scene in the movie. Even Bruno had a secret room, with a foam pit and balance beam, and just like in the movie, you got there by going behind a painting! The main part of the Casita had a spiral stair slide, and people dressed as characters came through regularly for sing-alongs.

At the end, you exit through a plaza where you can get your face painted and buy Encanto souvenirs, before returning to the regular toy store part of Camp. I thought the experience was amazing, and I definitely recommend going! The Encanto experience has been extended through May and June, so be sure to check it out before it ends! And, be on the lookout for the next experience at Camp to open this summer! For more information, visit https://camp.com/locations/ washington-dc.

Sweet Addition:

Have you been taking advantage of our early spring-like weather by walking around our beautiful neighborhood? If so, you might have seen one of Willowford’s newest furry residents, Rusty, my five-monthold chocolate English Labrador Retriever. My family adopted Rusty in January from a breeder in Fredericksburg. When we first met him, we immediately knew that he was the right dog for us based on his calm nature and playful personality. Despite his recent arrival, he has already made a huge impact on our family! Our daily routines have changed to accommodate his eating and sleeping schedules. After school and on weekends we spend a lot of fun times exploring Willowford’s forty miles of

trails. Right now, Rusty’s favorite trail is Pinewood Loop, but with so many to choose from, he might have a new favorite by the summer. He has already started making other furry friends throughout the neighborhood. He especially likes to play and wrestle with our neighbor’s dog Bodhi, a brindle Boxer whom we think he looks up to as a big brother.

Since we’ve gotten Rusty, he has experienced a lot of firsts, including seeing and playing in the snow. He loves to go to places with me and my family. He seems to make new friends wherever we go. Playing fetch is one of my favorite things to do with him, unfortunately, with his never-ending love of chasing leaves he gets easily distracted. Rusty, like many dogs, loves

playing with his toys, especially flipping them in the air with his mouth. I always look forward to when he greets me at the bus stop after school with his big doggy grin. As with most Labradors, Rusty has an everlasting appetite. His love for peanut butter-filled KONGs and ice cubes is unmatched. We love the new addition to our family and hopefully the next time you’re in the neighborhood and see a chocolate lab coming your way, you’ll say hello to one of Willowford’s newest furry residents.

Interview with a favorite neighborhood fitness guru! MOMS IN MOTION:

I had the pleasure of interviewing resident Erica Hall, a fitness icon in Willowsford. Erica has been teaching Boot Camp classes at the Lodge for the past 8 years. She also runs Every Mom Fitness at the Field House in Chantilly. I have a unique perspective on her as a teacher as I have attended many of her EMF classes with my mother. Here are some of the questions I asked her.

What started your interest in fitness?

I always played sports as a kid, and I loved it. When I stopped playing sports, in college, I missed it so much. So, I started running and then I learned how to lift at the gym. I also worked in gyms, and I just really liked the feeling after you worked out. Kind of like the feeling at the end of a sports game. It’s just that really good feeling of accomplishment.

How often do you teach and work out?

I teach here in Willowsford two mornings a week. Then I have my own business, Every Mom Fitness. I teach two ways. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings I teach live online. Then from there I go to the Field House in Chantilly and teach it in person three days a week. So that’s eight classes a week and then I work out on my own, for me, on the weekends. I either go run or do some workouts in my basement.

Why do you love fitness so much?

There are a lot of reasons why I love it. I love how it makes you feel. That’s the most important thing. Not so much about how you look but how you feel. Because when you get stronger and healthier and have more energy you feel like you can do more things. Like with hikes, fitness enables you to hike longer and

higher. It makes you feel really good about yourself and what you can do. That’s why I LOVE exercise because it gives you self-confidence.

Do you think everyone should work out?

I think everyone should do some type of exercise. Now everyone has different preferences. Like I teach mainly boot camp. For some people, that might not be the right thing for them. However, there is something active for everyone and I think everyone should do something. It’s good for your body but it’s also good for your mood and your mind. I think it’s really important to find things that you enjoy and that you can be active with.

What would you tell someone just starting out in fitness? Be consistent. Whatever you do, keep doing it. If you make it too hard on yourself, you’ll say it’s too hard, and then stop. That doesn’t help. So, do something and be consistent. You will get better and better every day.

What would you say to someone who is looking to set some goals?

Set small goals. You do a short-term goal, a midterm goal, and a long-term goal and you do that with anything in life. If you just set the big goal, it can be too intimidating. So you have little goals to get to.

What would you tell a kid that really wants to get into fitness?

“I love coming to boot camp with Erica because she’s a great instructor. She gives a wonderful, well-rounded class. More importantly, it’s the group of women, and some men, sometimes, and we all work out together. We become really good friends and share our stories. It’s fun to be here and I feel really good. I hate to miss it.”

Tell me about your classes at The Lodge in Willowsford. The Willowsford class I started when I was pregnant with my youngest daughter, Emory. Almost nine years ago. It’s been great. We have men and women, but it’s mostly women. It’s a

I would tell them to work it into every bit of their life. Try different things. Try different sports. Try different activities. Invite friends to do it with you because that’s what keeps it really fun. You’ll work harder when you have a friend with you. Also, doing it with other people holds you accountable.

great way to work out, sweat with your neighbors, and get to know them. We have a great group of people that have a lot of fun. We’ve been using the multipurpose room at The Lodge. All fitness levels are welcome!

All levels are welcome?

All! What I do is I will show exercises and then I will show modifications. A modification is like a variation of the exercise. So let say if going down and up makes you dizzy, instead of a burpee I would suggest a squat. We do no-impact options for people that give the same benefits. We have all different fitness levels, and everyone is working at their level. If you were to go on a run with somebody, some people are fast and some people are slow. You can’t all stay together. But with a class like this,

How long have you been doing Every Mom Fitness?

We recently celebrated our six-year anniversary of Every Mom Fitness. It all got started with Kristen Thomas, who runs EMF with me. She had been taking classes I had been teaching and the location was closing. She didn’t want the classes to end. I didn’t either. So, we got together and decided to keep it going. We changed some things, came up with the name, and made it more of a community. Our space at The Field House is pretty cool. We have moms and kids of all ages. Some of the moms who attend have been taking classes with me for over ten years. Before it was Every Mom. I have been teaching and training for about sixteen years. So, a long time!

Tell me about some of the events you do with Every Mom Fitness?

we can all be working together at our different levels.

Tell me about Every Mom Fitness.

Every Mom Fitness is for moms, but we do have dads, even grandmas. We have people that don’t have kids. It’s just a space for people to come work out. You can bring your kids, which is nice when they are little or have days off school and need to burn some energy. It is a great community and that is one of the things that we push a lot. It’s a place for people to connect. We don’t just work out. There is talking and there is interaction between people because that’s important too. You get to know the people and really enjoy the people you are working out with. You also tend to feel more accountable and you come more.

After Super Bowl Sunday, we do Suburb Bowl which is the Loudoun moms versus the Fairfax moms. They are so competitive! They show up with eye black on and they play games for points, and we see which team wins. Last year we were giving out Super Bowl rings and this year we made and gave out Taylor Swift bracelets, like friendship bracelets, to the winning teams. We also do the Murph. It’s a CrossFit workout but it’s for a soldier that was killed in action. It is a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and then another mile run. It sounds crazy hard but we do modifications for people. We do run it at the field house but a lot of people from the Lodge class will do it too. They will come to the field house, or they will do it on their own. The pull-ups are the hardest part. So, we do things you can do in place of a full pull-up. We make a t-shirt for it or a tank top and all the money from that goes to a local soldier!

“I have been coming to boot camp since soon after I arrived in Willowsford, which is exactly four years ago. I have just enjoyed it so much and I feel so much better all my aches and pains have been resolved by the exercises that Erica has had us doing. It’s just lovely to exercise with other ladies. We have a few laughs and a lot of fun and it just doesn’t feel like hard work. I have just improved so much. When I first started, I could barely move or do anything and now I feel great. It has improved my health. I just feel fantastic. I look forward to each session.”

SCALING NEW HEIGHTS:

Resident teens climb their way to the top!

Did you know that there are two teen residents here in Willowsford who are seriously accomplished in rock climbing?

First, Arabella Troeger, an Independence High School student with a GPA of 4.0, recently competed in the USA Youth Climbing Series, a competitive tournament for rock climbing. Arabella started recreational rock climbing at the age 9 and seemed to thrive. She lives in the Grant village, and as her joy of climbing grew, her parents soon joined Sport

Rock in Sterling to introduce Arabella to other kids with similar interests and the climbing community. They also connected with their neighbors and found out their daughter Jessica climbs competitively, and she became a wonderful mentor to Arabella. Arabella later joined teams with other climbers of her own age and became a member of USA Climbing Youth Series, which began her competitive journey. In 2022, she qualified for her first USA Youth Bouldering Regional Championship. And her additional accolades include

qualification in the 2022 Youth Lead/ Top Rope Regional Championship, the 2022 Division 8 Youth Lead/ Top Rope Divisional Championship, 2022-23 R81 Youth Lead/Top Rope Regional Championship, 2022-23 D8 Youth Lead/ Top Rope Divisional Championship, 2024 R81 Movement Hampden Youth Boulder Regional Championship, 2024 R81 Movement Hampden Youth Boulder Regional Championship, 2024 D8 Evolution Boulders Youth Boulder Divisional Championship – wow! She hopes to

inspire other kids to climb to help build their strength, endurance, mental agility, and the will to succeed no matter the challenge or fear. After 2 years of competing, her goal is to qualify to Nationals, and eventually attend a college with a climbing team and compete at the collegiate level. Jessica Huisenga, a friend of Arabella, also participates in competitive rock climbing! Her family and Arabella’s are neighbors in the Grant! Rock Climbing is a fast-growing sport made even more popular with its addition into the Summer Olympics. The community is extremely supportive, with the athletes cheering each other on at competitions no matter what team they are on. It builds strength, agility, and confidence, and is a sport you can continue throughout your life. Jessica has been team captain of the Sterling Sportrock Competitive climbing team for 2 years. She also organizes and teaches the gym’s Girl Beta program, a monthly meetup to connect and support female representation in the climbing community allowing her to share her passion for the sport. Jessica began climbing 6 years ago at the age of 12. Since then she has advanced to 11 Regional and 3 Divisional competitions and is on her way to advance to her 4th Divisional competition this spring for Routes. Jessica just turned 18 and will be going to UNC Charlotte in the fall, continuing to compete in the USA Climbing Collegiate circuit.

Let’s give a round of applause and congratulations to these awesome Willowsford neighbors who ROCK!

Savoring Life’s Adventures and Surroundings Together

EEverything about Anjali Kondapalli suggests a bright mind that can cross disciplines easily. After college, she developed a plant-based treatment for diabetes, which is now patent-pending. She then started hosting workshops to bring awareness to diabetes, encouraging more use of plants, roots, and even kitchen herbs rather than chemically synthesized drugs.

Born and raised in India, Anjali moved to Texas in 2006 to earn her master’s degree. “My dad’s dream was to see me as a scientist,” she said, “so I worked in cancer research for a few years.” Later, she changed course to information technology, which was her mother’s

dream. She’s quick to point out that her parents never forced career options on her, but as an only child, it was important to her to make both parents happy. Her IT career brought her to Virginia in 2010, and she says it’s keeping her engaged for now.

In a nod to Indian tradition, Anjali’s marriage to Kanyovardha Grandhi was arranged by their parents. The two had never met before their wedding. “He made a bold choice by quitting his job in Florida and moving to Virginia for me,” she said. “I was happy that he did but [felt] guilty that he had to leave his friends. He now works for the airport and loves his job.”

The two, who describe themselves as “loving, affectionate, and passionate,” celebrated their 10th anniversary last year and have lived in the Greens since 2017. Kanyovardha loves cycling through Willowsford trails every summer and enjoys playing sand volleyball at Willowsford Lodge. Since Anjali’s father passed away, her mom has stayed with them each summer. “She can’t handle the cold, so she escapes the unpredictable Virginia weather and goes back to India for six months of the year,” Anjali said. “If you see an elderly Indian lady on a pink bicycle, feel free to say ‘hi!’”

Kanyovardha’s parents live in India, his elder sister lives in Seattle with her family and his younger brother lives in Belgium. Still, the family remains close-knit and gets together as often as possible.

Anjali’s father believed that travel was a way to happiness, not a destination, so a love of travel is in her blood. She and Kanyovardha take at least one international vacation each year, along with beach/lake house getaways with close friends, all of whom married around the same time and live nearby. They recently took a memorable cruise on Symphony of the Seas, visiting the Bahamas, Haiti, and Jamaica.

“Right now, we see ourselves in our “Summer Season” of life,” Anjali said. “We’re positive, full of motivation, and have goals to achieve. Willowsford is a perfect place for people like us who love to live close to nature. My work commute is awful-more than an hour each way to Maryland. At the end of the day, I love relaxing on my back porch with Indian (Chai) tea.”

MEET WILLOWSFORD RESIDENT

Adam Huke at Cassaday & Company

Money isn’t everything but security and comfort are, which is why it’s essential to have the right team to help you make smart financial decisions today, so you have a comfortable and secure tomorrow.

Whether starting a family, easing into retirement, or somewhere in between, every individual can benefit from impartial financial advice regardless of their circumstances. Fortunately for Willowsford residents, there’s a trusted neighbor who possesses the expertise to help them navigate their financial decisions.

Adam Huke, CFP®, CIMA, CMFC, is a Partner at Cassaday & Company, Inc. and has been at the firm for over 20 years. During that time, Cassaday has been named by Barron’s as the #1 advisor in the state of Virginia for nine of those years. “Our mission is to provide objective guidance to individuals and families seeking advice about their financial situations. We deliver the highest level

of honesty, integrity, and overall excellence possible while providing exceptional quality at a reasonable rate” explains Adam.

“When visiting Cassaday & Company, Inc.’s website, one of the first things you see is a scrolling banner with a slide that says, “Always Do the Right Thing.” While this motto obviously applies to what we do for our clients, it also applies to our culture as a whole and how we treat each other,” says Adam. “Our culture is also all about collaboration. We are all working towards a common goal – excellent service for our clients. Cassaday fosters an intelligent, hard-working, teamplayer workplace that empowers all to go above and beyond to achieve our common goal on a regular basis. This means when clients partner with me, they also partner with the entire firm and have the ability to tap into the expertise of several other financial planners, our subject matter experts and a stellar client services team.”

Cassady & Company, Inc. takes great pride in offering clients services including:

· Investment management

· Retirement planning

· A tax planning team

· An estate planning team

· Advanced strategies team to assist clients with insurance and annuity planning

· Education planning

· Life and career transitions coach

· IT department that assists clients with technology

“The firm has estate planning attorneys on staff to conduct comprehensive reviews, recommend strategies, and prepare documents to ensure our clients’ plans align with current laws and fulfill our clients’ desired outcomes. We also have an inhouse research and investment management team to ensure we are in complete control of our investment selections, asset allocations, models, and overall investment strategies.”

“We have a team on staff that is dedicated to client education and is continually finding ways to engage and educate clients through in-person events, virtual events, videos, and more,” says Adam while explaining the importance of equipping clients with the tools they need to be “good stewards of their wealth.”

Furthermore, the firm offers a team-based approach that focuses not only on the financial aspect of the client but a variety of other services as well. “Our firm is different because we are genuinely concerned for the client as a person and individual, not just as a “new account”. When someone decides to partner with a financial advisor, they are not just investing their savings in the firm, they are investing their trust and essentially their future in the advisor’s hands. Therefore, it’s very important to me that my clients not only trust me but that we form a solid relationship. Clients need to feel comfortable with not just my ability to provide sound financial advice based on the market but to provide a personalized financial investment plan based on their individual circumstances. I take a holistic approach when partnering with my clients and the firm supports this approach. We support clients at every stage of life and offer services to address emotional aspects as well, such as a Life Transitions Coach.”

This “one-stop shop” approach is the firm’s way to make everything as easy and seamless for clients as possible. “We believe that the financial planning processes are interrelated and need to be carefully coordinated, and thus have assembled

a team of in-house subject matter experts who work together to address all aspects of our clients’ financial situations.”

Additionally, to help foster personal relationships with clients, Cassady & Company, Inc. hosts various annual client appreciation events. These include a Boo at the Zoo event (with Camel rides!) at NOVA Wild in Reston for clients and their families, a client appreciation holiday party often at fun locations such as the National Cathedral, Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum, and the American History Museum, as well as a Shred & Electronics Recycling event for clients to be able to securely dispose of documents and devices.

Cassady & Company, Inc. is not part of a bank, insurance company, or Wall Street firm and thus has no proprietary products. The firm simply sells advice, and as fiduciaries, are committed to acting in clients’ best interests. If you are interested in obtaining comprehensive financial planning and investment management or simply want a second opinion on your current financial plan, Adam would be more than happy to schedule a call or meeting.

Why Stroll?

“It has been a great match and is a fantastic way to connect two of my passions, both my work and my community. A client of mine who lives in Willowsford referred me to Traci and I am extremely happy with the experience. I have really enjoyed becoming a sponsor in Stroll as it has helped me to further connect with the residents of our community, both on a personal and professional basis.”

Are you interested in helping people? Making sure that everyone has a place to be included?

I am part of a team of 5 Willard Middle School Students working on a project for Step Up Loudoun called Play4All. At press time, our team just finished in the Top 10 for LCPS out of 225 projects submitted by LCPS Middle School students. Our project is dedicated to making our local playground more inclusive! This is important to us because we know that many people with special needs might not have a playground to play on. We understand that we can’t fix this entirely, but we can add a bit more inclusion into our local playground. We know that we aren’t physically disabled, but everyone knows what it feels like to be left out. This is why we are so closely connected to this issue. We already know that there are places that people can visit, but the closest to us is in Dulles and closer to Fairfax. Many people have special needs and want to play in parks and playgrounds. According to Loudoun Times, “Nearly 11,900 (12%) of the school population are special education students.” Though there is a big need, few playgrounds have been built throughout Virginia.

Park Planning team loved our swing idea so much that they are discussing adding additional inclusionary equipment in this park to make this park a destination. Stay tuned to our website for an official announcement when we are allowed to disclose the name of the park. https://sites.google.com/lcps.org

To fix this, we are fundraising to buy an inclusive wheelchair swing. Our team is working with Tommy Cureton and Aaron Schwartz from the Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community. Through an interview, I learned that this team is working on enhancements to a Loudoun area park that will begin construction in July. The

To raise money, we are hosting bake sales throughout Loudoun, selling baked goods to neighbors, collecting through GoFundMe, and have hosted several spirit night fundraisers at local venues. In the last 2 1/2 months we have raised over $5,000! The wheelchair swing costs over $25,000. But we aren’t discouraged. Our team knows the true value of inclusive play.

Before this article comes to a close, I would just like to share some quotes from the Play4All team and our

As a Willowsford resident-owned business, Dr. Lynn Alexander and Dr. Jason Kiangsoontra feel privileged and grateful to be the dentists of many Willowsford families. supporters. Gabby Torress stated, “Everyone deserves to play.” Pareen Sandhu added, “I have rights and everyone else should have the same.” Said Manasvi Theetla, “Everyone deserves to be happy!” Siri Gudi says, “Playing is an activity that is remembered throughout adulthood.” And I think that no one should feel left out, regardless of gender, age, or disability..

Mrs. Mapp (Our amazing Spectrum teacher) told us, “I’m inspired by your passion and dedication to create a place that brings joy to all.” Finally, a quote from Mr. Cureto: “You have helped us look deeper into how we build parks. You’re trying to bring about one singular swing in one singular park. But you’re really inspiring standardized change about how the. Park Planning team approaches park projects.”

We can’t express how grateful we are to all of the people who have helped our cause. Every little bit of money helps.

We need a community willing to help those who have been sidelined because of disabilities. So come out and support our project at our next fundraiser, or share our website with your friends!

GALLOP INTO ADVENTURE

Junior Writers spend the afternoon horseback riding at Tail Race Farm!

Horses, chickens, and pigs, oh my! Our most recent Stroll Junior Writers meeting was at Tail Race Farm. Tail Race is a family-owned farm in Aldie that has been in business since 1996. Their facilities include an arena, six stalls, two large fields, trails, and more. When we arrived, we were greeted by lots of chickens. I don’t think one of the chickens liked me very much judging by the funny looks it was giving me. After a short meeting about article assignments, we got to ride horses. I rode a horse named Maverick. Maverick was very large and liked to stop frequently. Some of the other horses were named Big Prince and Little Prince.

After riding horses, we all got to groom them. They showed us how to brush their coats. Once we were done grooming, we were able to pet their pigs. They had two large pigs named Sugar Buns and Hamilton. Sugar Buns was the bigger of the two, maybe because he really likes sugar. I tried to discuss the play Hamilton, with the pig named Hamilton, but he didn’t seem too interested.

Next, we got to hold the chickens. One of the chickens was super tiny. They told us she wouldn’t grow any bigger. They said sometimes they must go searching for her teeny tiny eggs because they are so small. They also told us that sometimes they must go searching for her because she likes to jump over the fence and run away to the neighboring farms. They also told us about a Rooster that they thought was a hen. When they finally realized that the girl was actually a boy, they had to change his name.

Another fun activity we did while visiting the farm was painting horseshoes. I decided to paint mine sparkly black. We all had a great time at Tail Race Farm. If you are looking for a place to board your horse, I’d definitely check it out. They also offer horseback riding classes and summer camps. I hope I get to go back soon!

Stroll Coffee & Connections

On March 21st, residents of Willowsford and Stroll sponsors gathered at the Willowsford Lodge for another successful Stroll Coffee & Connections event, with Pond Roofing as the gracious host.

Pond Roofing treated attendees to a delicious breakfast buffet, prepared by Marketing Manager Taylor Carroll’s family, including her mother and aunt. “We provided a delicious spread of breakfast goodies and coffee to enjoy while mingling with others to learn more about their professional life and how they serve our community,” said Carroll.

The event saw Dr. Chad Parsons and Jackie Paige-Joyner from Advanced Corrective Chiropractic stepping in as emcees for the meeting. The duo injected fun and dynamism into the morning with activities like “networking speed

dating” and “Pond Roofing Trivia Bingo” where lucky winners scored candy and coffee gift cards provided by Pond Roofing.

“It was an honor to host the Stroll Coffee and Connections and have the opportunity to share more about Pond Roofing with other local businesses in our community. We thought it would be memorable to learn more about us through Trivia Bingo all pertaining to facts about Pond Roofing. A few things were learned, including who is our longest employee, who is still with the company after 37 years, Pond holds the elite certification as Select Shingle Master, and that Pond has a rating on Google of 5.0. We were grateful to connect with other business owners in our area, along with Willowford residents.”

The event concluded on a high note with the giveaway of door prizes, adding an element of excitement and bringing the community closer through shared experiences and laughter.
