A Note from the Willowsford Board of Directors Hello neighbors and supporting businesses! The Willowsford Board of Directors are excited to provide an update in Stroll Willowsford for January 2024. HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS TO SHARE:
It’s that time of year again; hot cocoa, snow days from school, family fun at The Lodge sledding hills, and preparing for inclement weather. There are multiple entities responsible for snow removal in Willowsford. If you are unsure who is responsible for snow removal on your street, please check the Street Responsibility List located on the Willowsford Life website. Our very own HOA President, Fred Ferares, joined forces with other Loudoun HOAs to acquire funding for a program designed to help remove invasive insects and plants. Fred, along with other nearby Board members, voiced concerns at the Loudoun Board of Supervisors meeting, over the damage invasive species can cause, as well as the expense associated with their removal. Look for the article in Loudoun Now which includes information on the new program initiative! We have also been collaborating with our sister entity, Willowsford Conservancy, to provide screening for the NOVEC substation located in The Grange. An agreement between NOVEC and Willowsford resulted in NOVEC placing $150K worth of native plants on Willowsford Conservancy property. This was a great combined effort with the Board, Conservancy, and residents for a favorable outcome! Our amazing Strategic Planning Committee worked diligently to review the Resident Survey and provided meaningful insight into the priorities of our residents. This information will help us in completing the Strategic Plan and its subsequent implementation plan, providing a multi-year blueprint for the community, this coming year. As always, please reach out to any of your resident Board or team members with any ideas or concerns. We look forward to everyone having a great year ahead! Stroll Willowsford

f you’ve lived in the area long enough, you know that our winter weather can be quite unpredictable. Some winters we barely see more than a few inches of snow, while others we end up with 3-5-foot snow drifts and a severe case of cabin fever. We can never be too sure what we’ll end up with. As Stephen King once said, “There’s no harm in hoping for the best, as long as you’re prepared for the worst.” Perhaps you love snow and that’s the “best” you are hoping for, or maybe you’re like me and can’t wait for winter to pass; either way, you need to be prepared for the possibility of snow and being stuck at home for a bit this winter season. Check out these FAQs to help you prepare for what may come this winter.

FROSTY TRAILS BECKON: Winter Hiking Adventures Await!
22
January 2024
A
s long as you prepare, hiking in the winter can be an excellent opportunity for fun! The outdoors in the winter months offers unique and beautiful scenery that you can only experience while cold hiking. When cooler temperatures begin, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy nature – we’ll show you how you can easily modify your adventure for the cold!
CHOOSING YOUR TRAIL
Less popular trails can be more challenging due to snow and infrequent use. If you are an experienced hiker, then Bull Run in The Greens might be just the hike for you during snow. It runs for eight miles and at times you feel like you are in a remote forest. But if you are newer to winter hiking or have kids, then the Pinewoods Loops in The Grove might be perfect trail to explore. It is flat and easily accessible with a running stroller. NOTIFY SOMEONE OF YOUR PLANS
If you are hiking somewhere new or remote, let someone know before you leave. Important information to share with friends and family includes where you are hiking, when you are leaving, and when you expect to return.
GEAR UP!
It’s essential to have the proper gear when hiking. • Navigation aids: While your phone can be great for navigation (especially our trails app!), do not rely solely on it. Especially if you are heading to a trail in the Shenandoah National Park or other more remote area. Bring a map and a compass as backup. • Food and Hydration: Bring high-protein snacks to help you stay energized, as hiking in the cold or rugged terrain can burn extra calories. While you may not be sweating, bringing water to stay hydrated is essential. • Sunglasses and Sunscreen: In the winter, it’s easy to forget that the sun’s glare reflects off of white snow. Sunlight can reflect off the snow and cause additional UV exposure. Sunglasses can help protect you from the sun and the bitter wind. • Trekking Poles: Trekking poles can provide extra stability when hiking along icy or muddy trails. They provide more points of contact with the ground, which increases balance and traction. • First Aid: While you’ll want to bring your usual first aid kit, you may consider adding additional gear, like an emergency blanket, in the winter. Familiarize yourself with the symptoms of hypothermia and frostbite.
CHECK WEATHER CONDITIONS BEFORE YOU GO
Before you leave to hike, thoroughly research the weather forecast for the area you plan to hike. Pay attention to temperature, wind, precipitation, and any potential storms. Inclement weather can be hazardous when you are already dealing with low temperatures or icy conditions. LAYERS, LAYERS, LAYERS
Dressing in layers is critical to enjoying a winter hike. Wear layers you can remove or put on as the temperatures change throughout the day. Gloves and scarves can help keep you comfortable. Hats are critical, as we release one-third of the body’s energy through our heads. Covering your head during the colder months is functional and prevents you from losing precious body heat. SELECT THE RIGHT FOOTWEAR
Proper footwear is paramount to hiking in snowy or icy conditions. Your shoes should be insulated, waterproof, and have good traction to help with icy or muddy conditions. If you expect to hike along icy trails, consider wearing crampons or microspikes for better traction. Some snowy conditions may even warrant snowshoes!
SHORTER DAYS
Starting in late October, the days are shorter than in the summer. Plan your trip according to the time it takes to hike and when to turn back. Winter conditions can be dangerous, and it is essential to turn back if it is unsafe to go further. Pack a flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries in case your hike lasts longer than planned. LEAVE NO TRACE
Lastly, it is important to follow the guidelines of leaving no trace. While trails can be more strenuous to see or navigate under snow and ice, you should still do your best to stay on the trail. Our Willowsford community provides many trails to enjoy during the winter months that you can find on our website and you can also download our app which includes interactive maps of all the trails. Come out and explore!

TWINBROOK FLORAL DESIGN AND METRO FLOWER MARKET A budding floral business rooted in family for nearly 30 years WRITTEN BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL
T
his month’s sponsor spotlight is Twinbrook Floral Design and its wholesale flower business, Metro Flower Market in Chantilly, Virginia. This full-service floral design business is family-owned by Willowsford residents Margaret and Bruce Fleegal and their daughter Tricia Smith. Prior to purchasing the brick-and-mortar shop, Margaret and Tricia had honed their floral arranging skills within the floral department at a major grocery chain in Northern Virginia. “In those days, floral departments were new to the It’s a family floral affair. The position also meant a lot of time away from and granddaughter the family. Those factors were enough to encourage them to Brian and Morgan Smith. start their own venture. “In 1994, we combined resources with our daughter, Tricia, and bought an existing 600 square-foot flower shop in the Twinbrook Shopping Center in Fairfax, Virginia. The shop had three designers and a delivery driver, which we kept on staff. Those first few months were an eye opener,” recalls Margaret. Amy creates another floral masterpiece. Being the early nineties, the shop didn’t have computers, so orders were taken over the phone and billed by hand. Needless to say, they invested in computers and floral software within a month of buying the shop. Margaret says the early years were a training ground for them. Without the help of their family and extended family, the business would’ve never flourished into what it is today. “Bruce’s parents and brothers delivered flowers, my

brother and sister-in-law managed the delivery teams, my sister and nephew helped arrange flowers, assemble rose boxes, inflate balloons, and tag orders for delivery. My niece and sister helped with billing and sales. True to our nature, it really was a family business in every aspect of the operation.” Their younger daughters at the time of the store launch are also now part of the floral business. Amy is their lead floral designer, and her husband James, is a Metro Flower Market sales consultant. Tricia’s husband, Brian, also helps wherever needed from managing their delivery fleet to unloading product delivery in the middle of the night. Their daughter, Morgan, just joined the Metro sales team this summer. They have been fortunate to have wonderful employees over the years. Larry, their D.C. delivery driver has been with them for over 20 years, Kym and Nitza for 15+, and Tonya for nearly 10 years, to name a few. Today, their extended family includes nearly 50 employees who keep the shop and the market running smoothly. It’s this commitment to “family”, that differentiates Twinbrook Floral Design from other shops. “We always try to treat our customers like part of the family,” says Margaret. “We have grown our bridal business to be one of the premier bridal florists in the area, much in part due to treating our brides as if they were family and understanding that this is the most important day of their lives.” Their attention to detail has earned them awards and top reviews from The Knot, and Wedding Wire. In 2018, the business moved to its current 17,000-squarefoot location in Chantilly. The new space allowed them to open Metro Flower Market, a wholesale flower shop open to the public, which has become the D.C. metro area’s go-to place for fresh, unique, flowers, at competitive prices. “We’ve offered floral design classes to the public for years, but since moving to our new facility, we’ve stepped up the schedule, offering 12+ classes yearly ranging from wreaths
and bridal bouquets to boxwood trees and seasonal centerpieces,” says Margaret. Whether you’re looking to send a floral note of thanks, sympathy, or to plan your wedding floral theme, Twinbrook Floral Design, is guaranteed to offer the latest trends in floral design. Most importantly, they possess decades of experience to create the perfect floral arrangement for any occasion. As Margaret says, “we strive to make everything perfect.” Tricia suggests a new bouquet variety for Margaret’s consideration.

As Americans of Indian descent, Nishil and Meera Patel happily celebrate both Western and South Asian holidays. In spring, it’s Easter egg hunts and the festival of Holi. Their family motto is ‘Life is short – help in any way you can!’ Barath and Anjani Reddy grew up in India, came to the U.S. for grad school, and worked hard for their American Dream. They love to give back and are looking to help local charities who need IT expertise.

The Styled Sort Transforming spaces and lives
WRITTEN BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL
P
rofessional home organizing is a valuable service that can greatly benefit individuals seeking to enhance their living or working spaces. Through the expertise and guidance of a professional organizer, individuals can experience a transformative process that not only organizes physical belongings but also fosters a sense of efficiency, productivity, and overall well-being. Jenn Snodgrass is the owner of The Styled Sort, a professional home-organizing business that will celebrate a fiveyear milestone in May 2024. Jenn’s decision to launch a homeorganizing business stemmed from her experience in assisting family and friends. Prior to starting a family, she worked in the advertising industry in New York City, which exposed her to the satisfaction of collaborating with diverse clients. However, after having children, Jenn found herself contemplating her next career move. It was during this period that she began assisting her loved ones with organizing tasks and witnessing their overwhelming joy upon completion fueled her passion for this work. “I loved how happy they were after I finished,” she shared. “I was getting texts and cards saying how much they loved opening their pantry door or working now in their home office. So, I started researching if I could turn this into a business.” Seeking guidance, she contacted professional organizing resources, such as the National Association of Professional

Organizers (NAPO)and garnered invaluable experience by serving as a contractor for a prominent organizing company. She has remained a NAPO member and is proud of her certifications. “I currently have my Household Management and Life Transitions certificates and am working on my next one, Move Management and Home Staging,” says Jenn. “They also offer an amazing online forum where organizers from all over the country can ask questions and share information. It’s an amazing resource.” As a NAPO member, Jenn is bound to their code of ethics, which includes confidentiality. Although she does not disclose her clients, many clients decide to share on social media when they worked with her, feeling overjoyed by the experience. Like anything else, not one client and job are the same; therefore, customers can expect a customized experience. Jenn says, “That’s one of the things I love about this job,” noting that the first time she speaks with a potential client, she wants to know all about them. This includes their family, pets, work arrangement, what are their “pain points” in terms of areas of the house that are really bothering them. “This all helps me

prioritize the areas where we should start. Each time I am at a client’s home, the space becomes more and more efficient as we set up new systems and designated homes for items.” As Jenn notes, organizing is an ongoing practice and getting into a routine. “We all have so many things coming into our homes on a regular basis - mail, school papers, gifts, food, etc. I can go into a home, declutter, and organize it. But if it’s not done on a regular basis you can end up back where you started.” Jenn says she defines success as anytime a client shares how much better they feel after she has worked with them. Decluttering is not simply a physical act, as Jenn notes. It is also mentally freeing. One of her most recent clients was someone who lost her husband unexpectedly and is moving out of the house they lived in for 30 years.
“After” Laundry Room
“As you can imagine, there are a lot of emotions in what we are doing. She said to me one day “I was dreading going through all of these things. I didn’t want to do it but if I had to do it, I am so thankful I get to do it with you.” Making this client’s life just a little bit easier makes me believe that I am doing what I am supposed to be doing.” The positive effects extend beyond physical spaces, as a well-organized environment contributes to mental clarity and overall wellbeing. Investing in professional organizing services can undoubtedly lead to a more harmonious and fulfilling life. Discover how you can benefit today. STROLL JUNIOR WRITERS
KID CORRESPONDENTS: A year of Reporting from a street near you!
Have you ever studied the “Meet the Team” page in the front of every issue and wondered about the crew of awesome kids listed in the lineup? They are Stroll Willowsford’s Junior Writer Team, helping to contribute the articles and photos published every month! The crew currently has about 35 members, ranging in age between 8 and 17. In addition to writing and submitting their stories, Junior Writers attend monthly meetings, similar in structure to a scout troop. After the business of article assignments and brainstorming ideas for future issues, these kid correspondents participate in that month’s meeting focus: either an experience, reviewing a product, or volunteering in the community.

STROLL SIGNATURE EVENTS
PARTY CHRONICLES:
A Year in Celebration and Connection! PHOTOS BY DARLENE’S PHOTOGRAPHY
Nearly every month, Stroll Willowsford organizes a neighborhood event to help residents connect, have fun and relax, and possibly even discover a new location or activity in the area to explore! In 2023, our celebrations included family-friendly events like a Luau buffet at Old Farm Winery at Hartland (see page 50 ) and a night out at a Twilight Polo match (see page 55), plus events created for adults, like a bespoke farm-to-tapas tasting event at boutique B&B Goodstone Inn & Restaurant for couples and a Yoga and wellness class for busy moms (s ee page 53). We also enjoyed some popular annual events like Hops for Horses (see page 47), Cana Friday Family Fun (see page 60), and our Fall Family Field Party (stay tuned for our February 2024 issue). And of course, we wrapped the year’s social calendar in a festive bow with our beloved annual Shop & Stroll in Middleburg (stay tuned for our March 2023 issue!) If you haven’t already joined us “off the page” for a Stroll Willowsford outing, make a New Year’s resolution to grab a ticket for something this year - we have lots of fabulous events planned for you!
