A NOTE FROM TENANT HOUSE

PLEASE JOIN ME in congratulating the recently elected Board members. Fred Ferares and Brian Bobby from The Greens return for a second term along with new Board member Steve Bloom from The Grant. All three were elected to serve a 2-year term and join existing Board members Alisha Malik from The Grange and Harry Pugh from The Greens. They have hit the ground running with their first Board Meeting coming up on April 18th. I encourage you to attend in person or via the Zoom link on the WillowsfordLife.com calendar. Share your thoughts during resident comment period and stick around to see all the good work the Board and Staff are doing for the community.

There is much more happening in April—First Friday Happy Hour, Design Review Meeting to get that pool or deck you’ve been thinking about approved before summer, California Wine Dinner Weekend, Supper Club is back to save you time during the weeknight hustle and much more. Operationally, the team is working hard to ensure the pools, landscaping, clubhouses, and other amenities are in tip top shape and Resident Services is available to assist with any of your community needs.

Team Willowsford and I are looking forward to a summer full of fun. Stay dialed in on the latest news and events through our many forms of communication which can be found on our communications cheat sheet on WillowsfordLife.com under highlights on the home page. Don’t forget to follow us on social media as well.

Finally, the Board, Staff, and other resident volunteers have been working on several important local initiatives affecting the community—Loudoun Invasive Removal Alliance, Loudoun County Public Schools HS-14, Dulles South Community Park, Dominion Wishing Star Substation, and Northstar Blvd extension to name a few. Please check out the Willowsford Weekly emails and the Community Manager Reports posted to the WillowsfordLife.com Document Center for updates.

Private Reservations

If someone were to ask what my favorite element of this job is, it’d be a quick answer: watching milestone moments come to life. From graduation parties to baby showers and 40th wedding anniversaries, we’ve seen it all and it never gets old. For most, a venue sets the tone for the upcoming celebration. And our resort-style amenities are breathtakingly beautiful and unique.

A full scope of options and availability can be found on WillowsfordLife.com; here is just a snip of the range of options. A team of dedicated staff members are onsite to ensure each private reservation is facilitated to the aboveaverage Willowsford standard.

Incorporating Willowsford Kitchen and Willowsford Farm is always encouraged and something we highly

WILLOWSFORD HOA

recommend. They just go together; a match made in exclusivity heaven. Catering with Willowsford Kitchen not only provides exclusive use of the clubhouse’s back pantry areas and appliances, but it also provides an extra element of that community connection we’re all striving for. From passed hors d’oeuvres and boxed lunches to grilling packs, Chef Emily and her team, with selections from the Farm and other local purveyors, are ready to compliment your next gathering. Reach out to Willowsford Kitchen today to get your custom quote!

A newer venture to Willowsford: non-member reservation options. Expansion of the Rental Program, while

also allowing Willowsford and its amenities remain private, has been a bit of an undertaking but one we’re proud to now offer. Non-Members can book one of the clubhouses for a business meeting through our Corporate Rental Package and a wedding through our Willowsford Wedding Package. The Corporate Rental Package offers budgetfriendly options for “business hour” needs, complete with upgraded AV equipment and onsite refreshments, etc. The Wedding Package offers an impressive 12-hour private use of the space, complete with a complimentary rehearsal, furniture placement, and more.

Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly outdoor pavilion, space for your next business meeting, or the backdrop to your “I Dos”, we’ve got you covered. Get the conversation for that milestone moment started today by reaching out to our dedicated Lifestyle Team at lifestyle@willowsford.com!

You’re Planting an Environmental Seed With Every Experience in Nature

FOR SOME OF US , we can recall the moments from our youth when our environmental seeds were planted. For many, it was through our parents and their guidance in nature: a routine hike, a family camping trip, a walk along the river’s edge to skip rocks or dig in the mud, building forts under our favorite tree, eating a fresh snap pea in the garden, or through attending a ranger-led program at a nature preserve. These experiences did more than simply expel some much-needed youthful energy, each encounter planted an environmental seed – a seed that, with nurturing, provided us with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world. For some, those seeds grow into adulthood, producing humans who make it their life’s work to serve, protect, and share the natural world with others.

Conservancy Team: Our Environmental Seeds

SAM ADAMS: ASSISTANT LAND STEWARDSHIP MANAGER

My seed began to grow at the age of 4 when I can remember moving into the new family home in Northern Virginia and exploring the creek behind the house as far as it would take me. Finding aquatic critters and interesting rocks and plants was blowing my little mind! Growing up I would spend the

weekends in the woods or on the boat with my grandfather, dad, and brother; I can remember this cool feeling of being overwhelmed by the amount of activity that goes on in the natural world underwater that I had never considered or seen before. Attending school at WVU, I was at the heart of some of the most breathtaking views the east coast could offer, and I spent many days and weekends hiking Cooper’s Rock, Seneca Falls, Dolly Sod, and Blackwater Falls with friends. Now at 28 years old, when I step out into the woods, I still get that exciting/overwhelming feeling that I had when I was 4, and that sense of being just a small organism in the giant web of natural life.

TARYN MCFARLAND: LAND

STEWARDSHIP DIRECTOR

My environmental roots were established very early in life, and by the time I could walk, I was climbing trees. I grew up in rural Virginia, running barefoot in streams and woods catching frogs and lizards until the sun went down. As I grew into adulthood, I sought work that would keep me outside in the sunshine and fresh air. For several years I worked on farms and ranches where

20 April 2024

I developed an appreciation for sustainably managing livestock on the land. I developed a keen interest in balancing the needs of native grassland establishment with cattle grazing and the sustainable practices that make it possible. This passion led me to acquire a degree in Environmental Resource Management and a career in the outdoors. Now I enjoy the culmination of my passions at Willowsford Conservancy and can continue to heal the land, track wildlife, and climb the occasional tree.

ERIC MORRISON: FARM PRODUCTION MANAGER

One of the earliest memories I have of myself enjoying the outdoors is walking down to the creek with my dog. I loved that half-mile walk, the smells of summer, the calls of meadowlarks. I would stop and pluck horsetail from the side of the road to play with. Horsetail looks like a miniature version of bamboo. At each growth node on the plant, you can pop it apart. I loved doing this as a child and would endlessly pop them apart and pop them back together until I wore the stems out and they no longer would join back up. Once I got to the creek, I would watch the fish nervously darting around. I was always fascinated by the patterns of silt build-up on the stream bed. The patterns that develop are so beautiful, to this day I enjoy looking at such things. As a child, I always had to touch them. This would, of course, stir up the sediment and muddy the water ruining the effect, but I couldn’t resist the temptation. Now that I have a few more years on me, I leave well enough alone and just enjoy the view.

EMILY LAWRENCE: RANGER

Growing up both my parents emphasized spending time in nature and being active. We frequently visited nature centers, county, state, and national parks, and did outdoor activities like gardening, camping, canoeing, kayaking, and hiking. As a child, my father and I would foster injured animals we found in the woods behind our home, as well as take in stray cats or dogs if we could. As I got older, my passion and appreciation for the natural world only grew. I started volunteering with the Michigan DNR as well as county parks to control invasive species and educate the public

on sustainable invasive species management practices. During this time, I was also continuing my education, I graduated college with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with an emphasis in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Today, I enjoy spending my professional and personal time continuing to learn and admire nature and wildlife, and it’s because of my experiences as a young person, that I’ve landed at Willowsford.

SARAH UHRIG: PROGRAM & ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR

My environmental seed was planted early in life growing up exploring the waterways of central Florida. My dad is an avid bass fisherman and some of my earliest memories are days spent with him exploring the banks of the St. Johns River, catching minnows, and looking for alligators. Our favorite show to watch together was Steve Irwin’s “The Crocodile Hunter”, which jump-started my lifelong passion for wildlife. This love for all things nature led to pursuing my degree in Sustainability Studies at the University of Florida. Now five years later, I can work with the Conservancy to create programs that will help kids get some of those same transformative experiences with nature that proved so important for me.

Honoring Megan Bobby

IN THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY, amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, there are certain neighbors who go above and beyond for our neighborhood and others. One of those is our incredible neighbor, Megan Bobby. Megan is such an asset to our community, touching lives and fostering a sense of unity and support that is truly remarkable.

Megan’s journey of community service is a testament to her unwavering commitment to making a difference. As a volunteer for the PTA, she has dedicated countless hours to ensuring the success of school events, fundraisers, and programs designed to enhance the educational experience for students. Her efforts have not only contributed to the enrichment of our children’s lives but have also set an example of parental involvement that inspires others to follow suit.

Beyond her invaluable contributions to the PTA, Megan’s kindness extends to her everyday interactions with neighbors.

Whether it’s lending a helping hand during times of need, offering a ride for your kid, or simply sharing a warm smile, Megan’s acts of kindness are a testament to her genuine concern for the well-being of those around her. Whenever new neighbors move in, she is the first to introduce herself with open arms.

What truly sets Megan apart is her humility and the quiet manner in which she goes about helping others. Never one to seek recognition or praise, she is consistently placing the needs of the community ahead of her own. This has endeared her to the hearts of many and cemented her status as a notable neighbor.

Megan serves as a shining example of how compassion can forge stronger communities and create lasting change. Her incredible attribute to our neighborhood extends beyond the tangible contributions she has made; it lies in the hope, inspiration, and sense of belonging she instills in all of us.

As we celebrate Megan and the profound impact she has had on our community, let it also serve as a reminder of the power each of us holds to make a difference. In following Megan’s footsteps, we too can contribute to a legacy of kindness, support, and community spirit. Thank you for everything you do, Megan. You are truly an inspiration.

Do you know somebody who consistently puts others before themselves and supports others in need, whether large or small, but often flies under the radar? To nominate a fellow neighbor for this honor, send an email to billie.rose@strollmag.com.

Firing Up Fitness

Getting buff with buds at Burn Boot Camp!

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to step into a room with over 40 friends cheering each other toward their fitness goals? That’s the vibe at Burn Bootcamp of South Riding – not just a gym but a community where everyone works together. Burn Bootcamp is all about teamwork. There is no competition here; it’s more like a cheer squad, motivating each other to reach their fitness goals.

I had a chat with Candy Gagne, the lead trainer. Four years ago, she was working out at Burn and became a trainer because she loved it so much. She completed the Strength & Conditioning Assessment (SAC) to become a trainer – 5 pull-ups, 25 doubles, 25 pushups, 75 jump squats, 25 burpees, and a half-mile run, all under 10 minutes!

My mom works out there, and recently you can tell Candy loves what she does, and her energy is contagious. During the 45-minute camp, she moved the group through various workout stations while encouraging high-fives. All the trainers at Burn meet people where they are in their fitness journey. They focus on proper form to get the best results. It feels like you have your own personal trainer but in a group setting.

I got to join in on the action with my friend Mariah Bowens by closing the camp with a three-minute flutter kick ‘‘Finisher’. It was challenging and fun! Children under 13 usually can’t work out there, so they also offer ‘Child Watch.’ I’ve used it while my mom worked out, and it’s great that parents can exercise while their kids are in good hands.

Do

Now, the exciting part! Burn Bootcamp organizes community events so everyone feels even more connected. They planned a skating activity at a local rink on the day of my visit. And how do they wrap it all up? “Two claps on two.” Join the community by following them on Facebook or Instagram at @burnsouthridingva!

Wolffe Puppy Training

Train your dog without the pain

When getting a new puppy, early training is crucial to address bad habits. Consistency in enforcing house rules and setting clear boundaries is key. As Scott jokes, “humans don’t speak dog, and dogs don’t speak English” despite their long coexistence.

For that reason, it’s essential “to find a way to develop a symbiotic relationship over the long term.” This was his motive for starting his business.

“Humans and dogs have the potential to develop this special primal bond, which is unlike anything else we get to experience in our lifetime,” he explains. “That relationship can have life-changing benefits for both the human and the dog. It can save lives. We occasionally just have to learn some tools to help the relationship to thrive.”

Over 11 years, he has seen many situations with puppies and dogs. “I have walked into some houses and seen hilarious and often disconcerting things. We’ve worked with countersurfing dogs and overexcited puppies whose owners’ hands and forearms are so clawed and chewed up they look like heroin addicts,” he says.

Thankfully, these are all correctable behaviors. Wolffe Puppy Training can turn the worst puppy scenario into the best. He says that he’s seen dogs turn around people’s lives and that’s rewarding for the owner and keeps him motivated to fulfill this work. “We are meant to co-exist with them. Few things in this world make sense nowadays. But our relationship with dogs makes sense. And I just love that.”

Although there are other dog trainers in the area, Wolffe Puppy Training stands out from competitors by “meeting the owners and the dogs where they are at.” He says he doesn’t use a “canned method” because every situation isn’t the same. “Every owner is unique and has a different agenda for their dog. We are selective with who we work with and continue to be successful by offering real time private training at your home. We are available seven days a week and work mostly off referrals and relationships,” he adds.

Wolffe Puppy Training is different because they never use shock or prong collars like the “big guys” do. Scott Wolffe, believes in training dogs without causing them pain. He says, “Dogs don’t get it when you’re mad at them; making them scared or hurt doesn’t help.” He wants to make sure that dogs and their owners can get along well without having to use fear or pain. This way, both the dog and the owner can be happy and understand each other better. Scott’s way is all about being kind and patient, showing that you don’t need to be mean to teach dogs how to behave.

This has earned 5-star unsolicited reviews since the business opened six years ago. To begin, the trainer will ask the owner their goals and then they try to go deeper. “For example, an owner may have a goal of not having their 70-pound Rottweiler jump on people. Okay, that’s a good goal. But when you look deeper you may find the owner has small children and the dog jumping is a real threat to them. In addition to that, the owner wants to be able to take the dog to wineries and kids soccer games

“We developed both trust between the owner and dog and trust in our methodology, which continues to work throughout the dog’s life from puppy to retirement.”

without the fear that he will jump on somebody’s grandma and knock her to the ground.”

Essentially the company studies the owner’s behavior in addition to the dog to determine how to effectively produce the best training results. This may mean instruction in a public setting to develop the dog’s resiliency and subtly change their behavior over the long term – and that’s key, he emphasizes.

“We are helping the dogs and owners forge a relationship, develop a language to communicate with each other, and we develop connections with our clients that way too. I love to build a bond with a dog and family and continue to support them as things evolve. It means that we developed both trust between the owner and dog and trust in our methodology, which continues to work throughout the dog’s life from puppy to retirement,” he said.

Make your four-legged companion a friend for life by eliminating unwanted habits with Wolffe Puppy Training.

Blossom Bonanza

“Cherry-ishing” the annual festival in DC!

One of our favorite spring adventures is to enjoy the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. If you have visited the Tidal Basin in recent years, you may have noticed flooding while there. In fact, water in the Tidal Basin has raised four feet over the past 100 years, due to the structure sinking and effects of global warming. Now, many of the cherry trees there are submerged twice a day. After the blossoms finish this year, a 2-year renovation will begin that will include tree removal, construction, and replanting. Because of that, you should definitely try to visit this year, since it might be different, or even closed for a while after that! There are so many fun things to do and sights to see, it’s worth the visit, especially if you haven’t been in a while. If you have never been, what are you waiting for?

HERE ARE 5 TIPS TO HELP MAKE YOUR VISIT FANTASTIC:

1 / Timing: we try to go on a day off from school and avoid the weekend to enjoy less crowds. We’ve even gone right after school before and squeezed in a great visit!

2 / Parking: Our favorite parking spot is to get a day pass at the Salamander

Hotel (formerly the Mandarin Oriental). It’s great because we can use the fancy bathroom when we arrive and when we leave, and get a snack from the restaurant or surrounding shops too! From there, you can walk to the Tidal Basin, or take a quick taxi ride.

32 April 2024
LOCAL LIVING
Crafts at the Ranger Station

3 / Learning: We always visit the Park Ranger station while we’re there. You can get useful maps, find out more about helping cherry blossoms, learn about all of the local National parks, and more. They have fun crafts for kids there too!

4 / Eating: If you get hungry, be sure to visit the food trucks at the middle of the festival! (The Momo from Himalayan Soul Food is excellent!)

5 / Shopping: There are a few cool gift shop tents, with lots of souvenirs. Double-check the hours before you go; sometimes these and the Park Ranger tent close earlier than other attractions! If you miss out, visit one of the

nearby monument gift shops - they have cherry blossom goodies this time of year, too!

Bonus tip! ARTECHOUSE Gallery is next door to the Salamander and is showing their 7th annual cherry blossom exhibit. Our favorite part is to sit (or even lie down!) and watch all of the art move on the walls in the main room. It’s a fun way to relax and chill out after lots of walking, or worth a trip on its own!

All of this should make your Cherry Blossom Festival experience a blast. The Cherry Blossom Festival is happening now through April 14!

Spotlight on Talent

High school theater performances take center stage!

DID YOU KNOW that we have opportunities to see new and favorite theatrical productions, filled with talented cast and crew, all in our backyard? I interviewed members of our local high school theaters and got the scoop on upcoming shows in our area!

“Theater is a way to express yourself.” That’s what resident Jude Cabral, a senior at Lightridge says. Jude started theater in 6th grade and is continuing into college. He says that the Lightridge theater community brings joy to all who participate. It also helps students learn teamwork and speech skills! Additionally, Jude mentioned the amazing teachers and staff working in the theater production. That is the heart of the program - the teachers who encourage students to try new things and explore theater. One of these special teachers is Mr. Kalbaugh. He started acting in 1st grade. Since becoming a teacher, he has directed over 40 shows! Mr. K also believes in the empowerment of voice. Through this motto, so many kids have found a different view of theater.

to buy tickets soon! You can buy them at https://www. lightridgetheatre.org. And on behalf of Jude and Mr. Kalbaugh I would like to give a big shout out to Mrs. F, Mrs. Aron, Mrs. Rutan, Mr. Haller, Mr. McCarthy, Mr. Car, Mr. Phillip, and all of the parent boosters for the Lightridge Theater Department!

To see this in action, come to their latest show, The Little Mermaid! In this show, they are finding new ways to tell old stories! It will be hosted on April 25-27 so be sure

Another amazing theater program is Independence High School’s ITPA. I interviewed resident Jax Azad, an assistant student director and a senior. He has done 7 shows and is very dedicated to theater. He takes technical theater which is one of the many great theater-based classes at school. When interviewing him, I found out that the Independence

Theater program is an amazing community with top-notch dancing and singing. The sets, lights, and choreography are done by kids!

This was confirmed when I interviewed another dedicated performer and Willowsford neighbor attending Independence. Her name is Rhea Bakshi and she is a junior performing in the upcoming Mean Girls: High School Version. She says, “Theater is an amazing way to showcase your emotions and I think everyone should try it!” Avid thespian and Willowsford resident Clara Danzenbaker adds, ‘No matter what role, it’s fun being on stage. I love the community and friends I’ve made.’ Jax agrees, “I encourage everyone to join the theater!”

On behalf of the amazing troupe at Independence, the best way to support the program is to attend the shows! Their next performance, Mean Girls: High School Version, is April 27-28, and May 1-2. Buy your tickets at: https://www. independencetheatreandperformingarts.com. Jax, Rhea and other students in the theater program wanted to be sure to thank Mr. Noland, Mrs. Major, Mrs. and Mr. Mosser, and Mrs. Jenn for their support!

John Champe High School also has an incredible theater program and the talent is unbeatable. This spring they’re performing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (April 25th27th) and Six: Teen Edition (May 31st/June 1st). Buy your tickets at Champehs.booktix.com.

These are just some of the amazing theater programs located near us. If you are a high school student looking to get involved in the arts, these programs are for you! Make these talented teens feel appreciated for what they do and come support their shows! I have been to quite a lot of them and let me say, they are worth your while. Lightridge, Independence, and John Champe give 5-star performances every time!

FMAKING A DIFFERENCE

Paws for a Cause

Junior Writers make furry friends at Middleburg Humane Animal Foundation!

or the Junior Writer Team’s February meeting, we visited the Middleburg Humane Foundation, an animal shelter in Marshall. There, we discussed writing tips and tricks, before learning about the shelter, and then we took a tour throughout the facility. We were able to meet a young puppy with a harrowing tale of abandonment, who, through the efforts of the team at Middleburg Humane Foundation, is on her way to recovery. We also were allowed into the cat room to interact with some smaller furry friends, who gradually warmed up to us. As a thank you to the foundation for giving us such a fantastic tour and teaching us about their work, Junior Writers collected a generous donation of items such as cleaning supplies and cat food that was at the top of shelter’s “most-needed” list.

Middleburg Humane Foundation is a privately funded shelter, which has been in its current location in Marshall since 2019. Their Board of Directors provides a majority of the funding for the shelter, outside of donations, which are all used to take care of the animals. Throughout the year there are a few large fundraising events including their annual gala in April.

While the foundation does have full-time staff members, a majority of the primary care for the animals comes from

38 April 2024

their volunteer team. The shelter is always in need of volunteers. Anyone sixteen or older, or a younger child alongside a parent or guardian, can be trained as a volunteer to walk dogs, do laundry, socialize the cats, and other necessary volunteer jobs. They also have a unique and fun short-term fostering program called Snout and About! If you and your family would like to help out animals in need, visit the shelter’s website to learn more about adopting, becoming part of their foster program, or look into volunteering at Middleburg Humane Foundation: https://www.middleburghumane.org.

In a two-day trip to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania my family and I went snow tubing at Roundtop Mountain Resort. Roundtop is a quick 2-hour drive from Willowsford. There’s a ski resort for skiing & snowboarding and a separate snow tubing area; both areas have plenty of snow machines.

Roundtop has 9 lanes of snowtubing all with different passenger limits. You can ride solo, in pairs, trios, or even four people, by connecting your tubes together. To get up to the lanes you carried your snow tube while riding the conveyer belt up to the top of the tubing hill. During your ride up, you can watch the skiers & snowboarders gliding down the super steep slopes.

The first day we went snowtubing in the late afternoon and watched the sunset while we rode down the hill. As it turned to night and the temperature dropped, the snow froze and became icy, which made it more slippery and fast. The second day we snowtubed in the late morning, which was less busy, but the sun shining started melting the snow. The night tubing was much more fun. The most fun part though was tubing down with 2 or more people, because with the extra weight you went down faster than if you rode solo. Overall it was an extremely fun trip, ever since we got home I’ve wanted to go back, and maybe even try snowboarding!

Meet Maple, the newest addition to the O’Halloran family. Resident Bella O’Halloran’s wish for a puppy was granted this past Christmas with this adorable Cavapoo! A Cavapoo is a mix of a Poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They’re small dogs that are hypoallergenic and don’t shed. Maple’s wavy reddish-brown coat even has some cute white accents.

Cavapoos are great family dogs, they’re extremely playful and social and will follow you around everywhere! Bella has been having an easy time training her new puppy, Maple learns

tricks very fast. Maple enjoys car rides, short walks on her street, and chewing on furniture (like most puppies, she’s teething).

Maple is extremely cute, and about twice a day she’ll get random bursts of playful energy jumping around. Once she wears herself out, she finds a comfy place and automatically falls asleep. Cavapoos need a lot of attention, but they are extremely friendly to everyone. If you see Maple out on the trails, she’ll walk toward you and start playing!

All In The Details

A giveaway results in a refreshed and vibrant vehicle!

This winter, Stroll Willowsford had an exciting opportunity to give away a full-service car detailing from our sponsor, Apple Blossom Auto Boutique. One lucky resident, Matt Powell, was the fortunate recipient of this fantastic prize Matt has lived in Willowsford for 3 years and moved from Ohio with his wife (Marie) and three children (Reed, Isla, and Luxen).

Before

He loves the people and activities the community offers. Matt has been a car enthusiast since childhood and his dream car is a 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback. Currently, his wife drives a Chrysler Pacifica plug-in Hybrid. When he heard he won the detailing service he was thrilled. The timing was perfect since he was preparing for a road trip, and he says normally, his minivan is never clean.

Matt was extremely impressed with Apple Blossom’s services and communication. Aaron, an employee at Apple Blossom, kept Matt posted through the whole process. After a messy road trip, Aaron made the car look like it was new and perfect. Overall, Matt was pleased with Aaron and Apple Blossom and highly recommends using their amazing services!

"Our family knows the high cost of repairing and maintaining your vehicle. My experience gained at a major auto dealership I know to exceed the expectation of each customer that comes through the door, whether for the first time or for a return visit. Let us care for you and your car. "

TOUCHDOWN TRIUMPH

Kids kick off victory in flag football finals!

The NFL had the Super Bowl in February, but we have Super Bowl champions right here in Willowsford!

The Aim High 2nd and 3rd grade Bills are coached by Coach Brandon Banas and Coach Brian Bobby and have been together since the spring of 2023. The boys on the team mainly live in the Grove and the Greens and are the only all 2nd grade team in the league, but despite being the youngest they still won the Super Bowl in the fall of 2023! I will let you know though, that it was far from an easy win! The game went in to not one, not two, not three, but FOUR overtimes, and in the end, was finally decided on which team got the most yards!

After the game, I was able to interview the coaches in the locker room:

Why did you choose to coach flag football?

COACH BANAS: I really love the game of football and it’s played a big part in my life, in which I learned a lot of extremely valuable life lessons playing it. I’m very fortunate enough to have two sons (Blake and Brody) who enjoy the sport as much as I do and saw the opportunity to share my

passion for the game with them, as well as with a really special group of kids.

COACH BOBBY: my oldest son, Brayden (7) asked to get involved with flag football in the fall of 2022. Shant Tossounian (Grant resident) and I coached in the fall of 2022 in the NFL Loudoun League. A lot of the boys that played in the NFL Loudoun League wanted to

WILLOWSFIT!

play together and we needed to play in a flag football organization (AIM High) based out of Centerville. Brandon Banas and I began our team in the spring of the 2023 season.

What were your main goals at the beginning of the season?

COACH BOBBY: I wanted to instill a love for the game of football all while making sure the boys had a fun experience and learned the fundamentals of the game.

Do

COACH BANAS: My goal is to try to teach the following “player traits” in hopes they not only apply them in football, but in everyday life. I have this at the top of my practice plans: Hustle/Maximum effort, Respect/Focus, Eager to Learn and Grow, Leadership and Teamwork.

How did it feel to coach in a Super Bowl and win?

COACH BANAS: I was extremely proud of our kids as they faced a lot of ups and downs during the game, but they never quit and played their hearts out! There is nothing more I can ever ask for as a coach!

COACH BOBBY: It was quite an accomplishment for the team to play and never give up. The Bills were trailing 12-6 with 50 seconds to go, tied the score, and won in 4 overtimes! It was a feeling I will always remember of excitement for the boys!

How do you coach your players to be humble?

COACH BOBBY: Each practice Coach Brandon and I always take the first few minutes to discuss the importance of winning and losing as a team and always staying humble in all situations.

COACH BANAS: We try to instill/teach in them that football is a team sport and it’s not all about individual accomplishments. When one person scores, we all score! I teach them to let their actions do all the talking, and to leave it all on the field no matter who we face!

At present most of the Bills are on an indoor winter flag football team called the Golden Goats (head coached by Greens resident Danny Vagnerini). They are currently undefeated and expect to win their league! Stay tuned for the spring season – these players and their coaches are hoping to have a ring for each hand!

THE SONI FAMILY

Whisking Up the Sweet Life!

What does a guy from South Jersey do when he meets a lovely gal who works in northern Virginia? If he’s Jay Soni, he marries her and eventually, they move to Willowsford.

Jay met Jorie at a wedding in Rhode Island and they stayed in touch. Jorie, a devoted Chicago Bears fan who was raised in Illinois and earned her master’s at Radford University in elementary education/early childhood special ed, was already working for the Loudoun County school system when they met. Jay, a die-hard fan of all Philly teams, graduated with an economics degree from Rutgers and joined Jorie in Virginia once they got serious.

Since then, three little Sonis have arrived, and the family moved to the Grange. Kieran, 8, and Sophia, 6, are at Elaine Thompson Elementary. Kieran, a second grader, likes math class best. He plays soccer, baseball, and basketball (and golf with his dad) but hasn’t locked down a favorite sport. He’s taking swimming lessons with the goal of joining the Willowsford Waves this year.

Sophia is in kindergarten and is cool going to school with her big brother. She’s made great friends and is active in gymnastics and swimming. With a season of field hockey under her belt, she’s eager to play again this year. And like every Swifty she’s busy learning all of Taylor’s songs.

“I started making birthday cakes when Sophia turned one. Eventually friends started asking me to make cakes for their kids.”

Mila, 4, is finishing up Pre-K and looks forward to going to her siblings’ school next year. She swims, just like the big kids, and is looking forward to another season with Loudoun Soccer. “Mila,” predicts her dad, “will by far be the ‘class clown,’ as she always has us laughing.”

Jorie is in year 17 of teaching early childhood special ed. Due to a teacher shortage, she was back in the classroom this year, but has previously been a consulting teacher and resource teacher in the community. “I truly love working with our littlest learners and helping support their families at home as well,” she said.

Jay works in sales for Safe Security, a cyber risk management firm. But at home, he supports Jorie’s baking gig. “I started making birthday cakes

when Sophia turned one,” Jorie said. “Eventually friends started asking me to make cakes for their kids.” After five years, she recently made her first wedding cake! Customers can order her creations @whisknwinebakery. “I love supporting my wife’s side hustle, but I’m usually relegated to clean-up, as Jorie won’t let me touch the cakes,” Jay laughs.

Favorite vacations so far have been to Disney and Baha Mar in the Bahamas. The kids absolutely loved riding the roller coasters at Disney and meeting some of their favorite characters. Baha Mar offered waterparks and beautiful beaches for the kids while the adults got great pools and restaurants. “We make at least two beach trips a summer, usually to the Outer Banks or Wilmington, NC, where Jorie’s dad has retired,” Jay said.

The Sonis describe themselves as an active, loving and laughing family. Says Jorie: “We are in the busy season of life. The kids’ sports, school and activities take up most of our time outside of work.”

Attendees were greeted with a warm welcome and a complimentary drink provided by headline sponsor Aiken Warner PLLC, CPAS. The culinary centerpiece of the event was a massive charcuterie spread generously provided by Oh Graze Away, showcasing an array of delicious meats, cheeses, and signature dishes. For those with a sweet tooth, desserts by Figment Bakery and Red Truck Bakery were the perfect finale to the meal.

The entertainment for the evening was provided by the talented father-daughter duo Todd Wright and Ryan Wright, whose live music set the festive ambiance of the event. NaturaLawn of America

Your trusted neighborhood lawn care provider

s a customer of NaturaLawn® of America, you can expect to receive a customized approach to your lawn care that is both organicbased and effective. When Phil Catron started the company in 1986 he envisioned transforming the lawn care industry by using safer and more environmentally friendly products for his customers. He was so successful that he was able to begin sharing his dream with others by creating franchise opportunities. Darrin Hewartson, the owner of the NaturaLawn® of America franchise here in Loudoun County, saw that he too aligned with Phil’s vision after being in the industry of chemical-based lawn care. He decided to buy into the franchise in 1992 and has been working with and alongside Phil and others for the last 32 years. Word of the benefits of NaturaLawn’s proprietary and unique products has since spread throughout Loudoun County and beyond for Darrin’s franchise, and there are reasons why.

NaturaLawn® of America’s organic-based fertilizers have a natural composition. They are made up of compost, bone meal, fish emulsion, and seaweed. Each bag of fertilizer contains 80 plus beneficial microbes that feed your soil and help release the benefit of those microbes already within the soil. The phosphorus and potassium contained within these fertilizers have been engineered naturally and with higher quality than traditional synthetic fertilizers. NaturaLawn’s fertilizers slowly release over a period of about six weeks. This supports robust root growth and promotes a lush and green lawn until your technician comes back to re-apply.

Their fertilizers are even engineered to be mowed over top of without interfering in the fertilization process. There is no “filler” in a bag of NaturaLawn fertilizer. Everything in the bag is beneficial for your lawn. Their fertilizers promote soil health and water quality without the use of harmful chemicals and synthetics that damage your property and the environment. Upon your first treatment you will receive a soil test that will be sent back to their lab. Once the results have come in from your soil test you will receive the remaining treatments according to your lawn’s specific needs, customizing your service.

In addition to the seven treatments of fertilization throughout the year, NaturaLawn will contain the weeds within your lawn by using up to 85% less pesticides than traditional lawn care companies. Weeds will be addressed upon each of the seven treatments by your technician, not only on one or two treatments. Optional but also available are their five tick treatments per year, their grub control, aeration, or aeration and overseeding. Their tick ranger control program will knock out up to 70% of existing tick populations with the first treatment. (Did you know that ticks are the leading carriers of disease in the U.S. second only to mosquitos, and that most people contract Lyme disease within one hundred yards of their property?) The last four treatments of tick ranger will guarantee to wipe

70 April 2024

out the rest of your tick population and ensure that newly hatched young do not mature and re-infest your property affecting you or your pets and children. The tick spray is also safer for your family and the environment, consisting of fatty acid soap (kills on contact) and cedar oil (works as a repellent). As stated above, aeration, or aeration and overseeding are optional in the fall. Aeration is always beneficial in promoting root growth and the spread of microorganisms. When combining aeration with NaturaLawn’s no weed, no crop seed, overseeding will pretty much guarantee a full lawn come spring. Keep in mind that in addition to their fertilizer, their seed is also exclusive and proprietary and cannot be purchased anywhere else in the market.

Through the many years of business Darrin, the owner, has created a local family-run company. When calling the office you will get a hold of his daughter, Sydney Tassi, who is married to a technician Attila Tassi. The two are welcoming their second child this spring. In the fields of the Willowsford community, you may recognize his son, Jacob Hewartson. Jacob has been a technician for the company for over 10 years now. He and his wife have two young sons. Their newest family member addition is his son-in-law, Jonathan Thomas. Jonathan is taking on the sales role for the company and is married to the former office manager Brooke Thomas. They also have two children together. Therefore, when you call NaturaLawn® of America, you are not only getting great results by using safer products for your own family but also supporting other local families.

Overall, it’s a no-brainer to go with NaturaLawn® of America to take care of your lawn care needs. As you’ve been reading, their lawn care products are superior when matched against others. You’re likely to be more satisfied with the results of the NaturaLawn program than you would be with any other lawn care program. After all, the exclusivity of the

product and the way it is applied coupled with their excellent customer service is why they retain so many customers. Their products go after your soil, making it healthy and providing a secure foundation for your turfgrass. They do this while being environmentally friendly and safer for your family, friends, pets, and wildlife. Let NaturaLawn take the hassle out of the do-it-yourself approach to lawn care with their superior and safer products and help create a better tomorrow for future generations. TRANSFORMING FAMILY TIME

A backyard haven to ease a hectic schedule.

NESTLED AMONG THE SCENIC SURROUNDINGS of Willowsford is the lively home of a family with three active children. They’ve recently embarked on a journey to create lasting memories in their revamped backyard space. Having lived in the area for a few years, they felt it was time to refresh their outdoor environment, and they enlisted the help of Pristine Acres to bring their vision to life.

Tucked away behind their residence, the focal point of the transformation is now a screened-in porch adorning their back deck. Featuring innovative retractable screens and sturdy vinyl materials, this adaptable addition offers the family a myriad of possibilities. Whether they’re seamlessly integrating it with the deck for large gatherings, keeping insects at bay during evening gatherings, or snuggling up by the fireplace with the vinyl down on chilly nights, the screened-in porch has quickly become the hub of their outdoor living space.

This thoughtful addition, along with a finished under-deck space providing ample storage and additional entertaining space, has transformed their home into the ultimate hosting retreat.

For this family, the driving force behind the project was simple: to create a space where their children could play, create memories, and expend their endless energy. With busy schedules, the convenience of a quick swim or a soothing soak in the hot tub after sports activities has become a cherished routine for everyone.

Their experience with Pristine Acres was exceptional. From the initial design phase to the final touches, the family felt fully supported throughout the nine-month process. “Our son, Mason, loves The Hill School summer camps – he starts talking about them the minute they’re posted up on the website. Last year, we signed him up for entrepreneurial, stop motion, campus games, builders, nature, and lego camps. I know his favorites were nature camp where he was able to explore the trails of Hill campus for the week, entrepreneurial camp where they learned how to film a commercial and went door-to-door in Middleburg advertising before the big sale, and campus games camp where he was able to play different sports every day and they went to the Middleburg Community Pool at the end of the week. There’s so much variety and so

many camps that we want to try out every year – photography camp, outdoor adventure camp, and so much more.

As parents, we appreciate that Hill School summer camps are held in a school setting and that many of the camp leads are current Hill teachers, alumni, or long-time counselors. The kids get to play at the playground and then learn activities while in the classroom or at the arboretum or on the trails –they’re not just sitting around in the hot sun – but they are having fun and making great memories. Maybe Mason will see some Willowsford friends there!” —James Bergeron

“We started going to LCDS camps in the summer of 2019, the year we moved from Ashburn to Willowsford, and have attended at least 3 camps every summer. I can’t say enough good things about the summer camp program at LCDS, my daughter’s favorite camp is Roxaboxen. The kids bring boxes and the school provides boxes as well, so they can build their own village and create an economy with sticks and rocks. One year she had a jewelry store and made and sold bracelets another year she had a mini mart, it literally is her favorite camp of all time. Another favorite is Chefs Table, where they learn basic cooking skills. Last year they taught her how to make chicken bites with Panko bread crumbs, needless to say we ate chicken bites for weeks and weeks because she was so proud she learned how to make them, and they were delicious!! We can’t wait to attend camp again this year!” —Marti
