As we step into February, a month that embodies love and connection, I find inspiration in the timeless words of Winston Churchill, reflecting the sentiments we cherish in our community. In the heart of Stroll Willowsford, our commitment to nurturing connections and fostering a spirit of community stands strong. This February, let’s celebrate the virtues that make our community unique—love, compassion, and the ties that unite us. Your stories, experiences, and voices continue to shape the evolving narrative of Willowsford, creating a place that truly feels like home. This month, I encourage you to share the love—through cherished traditions, moments with family and friends, or expressing gratitude to those who make a difference in your life. A sincere thank you to our steadfast sponsors, many of whom are your neighbors, for their ongoing support. These local businesses form the backbone of Stroll Willowsford, enabling us to cultivate connections and celebrate the spirit of community throughout the year. Consider supporting these valued local partners as you seek products or services, knowing they share our belief in the power of community. This February, let’s celebrate not only romantic love but also the warmth emanating from our families, friends, neighbors, and the broader community. Wishing you a February filled with love, warmth, and meaningful connections.

A NOTE FROM TENANT HOUSE BY REBECCA LYONS, CMCA®, PCAM®, LSM® WILLOWSFORD HOA COMMUNITY MANAGER

February in Willowsford brings picturesque scenery, making memories on the Sledding Hills, Valentine’s Dinner with that special someone, Willowsford Kitchen Supper Club pick up, and a new session of Junior Chef Academy starts. The downside of February is that it can be the most brutal part of winter. Snow removal responsibility in Willowsford depends on which street you live on; it could be VDOT, the HOA, or residents of the street. Please visit the snow removal page of WillowsfordLife.com for the current Street Responsibility List and FAQs so you know what to expect and when. In addition to the website and other communication means, did you know Willowsford HOA is on Instagram? Follow us at Willowsford Life Instagram for the latest news and events. Speaking of news, the Strategic Planning Committee completed their months-long work recently, submitting the Strategic Plan to the Board of Directors for approval. If you see any of the committee members, please thank them for their commitment to the future of Willowsford; Jill Ferares, Max Harwell, Tom Thoma, Traci Evans, Brian Cellone, Frank Blackstone, and Harry “Skip” Pugh. I send an extra special thank you to the Chairperson, Jill, who spent a tremendous number of hours leading this endeavor. The HOA’s plan which can be found in the document center on www.willowsfordlife.com, firmly establishes the vision, mission, and priorities of the community moving forward. To ensure success, development of the implementation plan is underway. Moving forward, it’s election time for Willowsford. Have you thought about running for the Board? Members will vote online to elect three (3) seats, each for a two-year term. Be on the lookout for an email from The Inspectors of Election (TIOE), the independent third party overseeing and facilitating the election process. Election results will be announced at the March 21st Annual Meeting (open to all residents) at Sycamore House. Stroll Willowsford

WILLOWSFORD HOA

A NOTE FROM THE HOA PRESIDENT Dear Neighbors, As your HOA Board President, I am excited about the growing forward momentum in creating a stronger partnership with our partners at Willowsford Conservancy, one that benefits everyone in our community through improving property values by: maintaining and investing in aging deficient infrastructure, increasing opportunities for members of our community to connect with the trails, Farm and the experts in their fields that lead their teams. This growing collaborative relationship gives us, the HOA, the opportunity to help the Conservancy achieve their goal of growing our Agrihood from a nationally recognized community to one that is globally recognized by authentically living its mission. The collaboration also helps us achieve the HOAs vision of being a nationally recognized Agrihood community where people want to live, work, play and engage with their natural surroundings. Recently, my wife, Jill and I engaged in canvassing our community alongside the Farm team and what we learned from meeting more of our neighbors is people move to our community because of the Farm, trails, and opportunities to engage in community events surrounding these. We also heard time and time again: we used to be members of the CSA but found that it provides too much food, food that I don’t necessarily know what to do with or a frequency of delivery that doesn’t match our frequent travel schedule. I have good news – based on feedback from our community, the Farm has

adjusted their offerings. They now offer convenient pickup at the Willowsford Boat House and Farm Stand – or for active households short on time, delivery straight to your front door. The Farm’s Custom CSA is flexible too, and a great option for those of us that travel frequently or those of us who do not necessarily enjoy all the produce the Farm has on offer, in my case, collard greens. Lucky for me, my wife, Jill, is a patient and strategic woman who has woven kale into our lives without me even suspecting it. While my wife and I enjoy the culinary adventure that comes with the Farmer’s Choice CSA Share, many of our friends chose the affordable $500 Custom CSA Share which allows them to order what they want, when they want. Select items frequently sell out, especially the Egg share, so I encourage you to secure your Farm shares today. I hope you will join my family and many of your neighbors in supporting our growing collaboration with the Farm and Conservancy in 2024 - so that we can create a stronger, more vibrant, and engaging Willowsford for all ages – one that will not only maintain and improve our property values, but with time, be a proven leader and model, for other communities in creating a more resilient and sustainable place to live.

WHY SHOULD YOU REGISTER FOR THE CSA TODAY VS. TOMORROW?

By signing up for the CSA today, you are indicating to the Farm team that you support them, and it ensures there is enough fresh farm food planted just for you in the 2024 season. Select shares, such as the egg shares, are limited (the ladies of the Farm only have so much to give!), so securing your spot now ensures access to all Farm offerings. WHAT YOUR NEIGHBORS ARE SAYING:

”We love access to quality eggs from well-cared-for hens. We feel so much pride and happiness to have the farm as part of

our community. We also love the extra offerings of bread and meat. I love the a la carte option because of food allergies, but I am also able to shop the farm stand. We encourage other neighbors to purchase from the farm. Some of them have a misconception that the products offered are very expensive. We tell them otherwise. Thank you for all you do for our community!” —Kristen Mecca. ”The products are beautiful, great tasting, much nicer than the organic at Wegmans. I do not understand why more people don’t buy shares. It’s very local, so the produce is fresher than anywhere else people buy organic.” —Harry Pugh.

NOTABLE NEIGHBOR

HONORING PAUL BRADFORD BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER JACKSON HOFFMAN • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE VIRGINIA INSTITUTE FOR SURGICAL ARTS

There are many neighbors worth noting in Willowsford and Mr. Paul Bradford is definitely one of them. He is so humble and probably wouldn’t want me writing about him but I feel like he should be recognized for being so wonderful!

He has always been pretty spectacular to me. There have been countless times he would help our family whether to give my dad advice on how to drain a water heater and show up in his work clothes to help him do it! Mr. Paul has such a kind heart. Anything we ever ask he will gladly help us with! If we were out of town or sick and he noticed our lawn got a little long he mowed it for us and expected nothing in return. We can always count on him for any tool we ever need to borrow. He will just tell us to go in his garage and grab it if he wasn’t home. He always offered his riding lawn mower because he saw it would take me a little longer with the push mower. The riding lawn mower was one of my favorite things I looked forward to doing with my Dad. It made yard work so much fun! Mr. Paul also always has little jobs I could do around the yard which allowed me to make a little extra money and he always paid me really well! Even though I probably didn’t do a perfect job at my age, it still allowed me to earn a little extra for something I was saving for. I learned so much from him too. The memory that I will never forget, however, is when Mr. Paul gave me his riding lawn mower. I was finally old enough (and heavy enough) to be able to ride the mower by myself. He was upgrading to a new one and could have easily sold his old one if he wanted to, but he surprised me with it instead! I’ll never forget that moment, the joy of being handed the key. He said he wanted to give it to me. It was unbelievably kind and so generous of him! He even took it to a shop to get it serviced and fixed up for me so it was in perfect condition. He went above and beyond and I’ll never forget the kindness he showed me. Mr. Paul, Mrs. Lisa and the whole Bradford family always have a smile, kind words to say and go out of their way to help others. Neighbors like them should be recognized for their kindness. Do you know somebody who consistently puts others before themselves and supports others in need, whether large or small, but often flies under the radar? To nominate a fellow neighbor for this honor, send an email to billie.rose@Strollmag.com.

Haunted Hovatter is a tradition at our elementary school that really gets us into the Halloween spirit. It gets better every year! We get to trunk-or-treat, where small businesses, school staff and teachers, as well as families, get to decorate their trunks and pass out candy and little toys and stickers to kids. The trunks were decorated so well this year! People had games and prizes and some even had lines, they were so popular. Some examples of trunks that were really cool were the Tae Kwon Do local business teaching kids how to break a board. Another was the Star Wars truck. I learned from them how they are a nonprofit bringing science and STEM back to life for the kids through these Star Wars-inspired vehicles. The Police and Fire department even had their own trunks there too with some cool handouts and stickers. Someone even brought their Ferrari! Principal Mercer and our Vice Principals dressed up and passed out candy too which was so special to see them outside the school building having fun with the kids. There was even zombie tag inside the gym, arts and crafts, and we got to make homemade slime!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Culinary Magic

Our neighborhood chef makes a difference within the community BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER KIAAN SARAIYA THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY LUX DENTAL CENTER

Did you know about our very own community’s talented chef? Let me introduce you to Chef Emily Worth! Chef Emily runs the Willowsford Kitchen, and she curates various foods, drinks, and desserts from all cuisines. I wanted to share with you all about our family’s own personal experience with her services. In November, my family hosted a pre-wedding dinner for one of our cousins. We hosted the party inside 36

February 2024

the Sycamore House, which is located in the Grange part of Willowsford. There, we were able to set up balloons, play music, and even got to create our own menus with Chef Emily. First, when we entered, we were served by the staff with delicious appetizers such as bang-bang cauliflower and bao buns while we mingled. Then we were seated and

were served delicious papaya salad followed by a hearty winter soup. Then, for our main course we ate steaming hot bok choy with black pepper tofu and rice. Finally, for dessert, there were plates of miniature macaroons, fruit tarts, warm mango coconut sticky rice, and many more sweets. Chef Emily was so helpful when we created this delicious menu! Chef Emily also runs amazing cooking classes, including a Junior Academy that is held once a week for about five to six weeks. My brother did the class and absolutely loved it. During his course, he learned how to make various recipes for different cuisines. In the class, students make appetizers, meals, desserts, drinks, and so much more! Chef Emily also offers other classes for kids and adults throughout the year. She also designs the gingerbread house workshops every year during Willowsford’s Winter Wonderland. Additionally, one of the days in the Discovery Camp at Willowsford is a cooking day, run by the Chef herself! Overall, Chef Emily provides great food services for our community. Willowsford is lucky to have such a unique feature. Chef Emily makes sure every class and food experience is full of great taste, with lots of planning and always listening to feedback! So many kids in our neighborhood benefit from learning in her classes, and she makes every special event even better with the delicious food she creates. I would highly recommend trying her foods, services, and classes! Stroll Willowsford loves highlighting people and organizations that help make a difference in our community. As most of you monthly readers know, the Street Spotlight feature is supposed to be about cool things you do on your street. Today, I’m writing something a little different. See, I live on a street that we fondly call the forgotten cul-de-sac. Why do we call it that? Because we on Balmoral Glen Court in the Grove, feel that most residents don’t realize we are a part of the neighborhood. Since we don’t directly connect to any other neighborhood streets, most people think we are part of McIntosh Farms. I’m here to tell you, we are not. Balmoral Glen Court was one of the first streets built in the Grove in 2014. We have thirteen houses total on the street! I have lived here since 2015 along with five other original families. My street has had a lot of fun parties over the years. We celebrate the 4th of July together in the cul-de-sac every year. We’ve had a Crab Boil, many BBQs, Easter Egg decorating and hunts, and fire pit round tables. While we sometimes feel pretty insulated here, we are not completely disconnected. My street has a pathway to Woodland Run Place used by middle schoolers to get to and from Willard. My street is wonderful and a hidden gem in the neighborhood! SAVORING LOCAL FLAVORS Find a new favorite at Blue Ridge Grill! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER SYDNEY SHAUGHNESSY THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY LOUDOUN COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

Blue Ridge Grill is a wonderful restaurant for any occasion, be it a date or a birthday, and is also wonderful for all ages and families. Located in the Brambleton Town Center, which is near the neighborhood of Willowsford, is right next to a movie theater and library. Ryan, my stepbrother and a Grove resident, works at Blue Ridge and told us a little bit about the restaurant and why he enjoys working there.

Blue Ridge Grill is a unique restaurant because it has a variety of cuisines with generous portions. Some dishes are common, but they use high-quality ingredients and almost all of their food is made from scratch. Their To-Go process is also easier than most restaurants, they still offer

curbside pickup with lots of spots to park in while you wait. Some of the things Ryan enjoys about working at Blue Ridge Grill are that it’s nice to work in a team, it feels good to work alongside friends, and the managers are nice. On days you work, you can get discounted meal prices. While working it is very engaging and there is always something to do. You can also get a lot of exercise, as in 14,000 steps in 4 hours! One of their most popular dishes is the Brentwood Salad which has lightly fried chicken over romaine, corn, tomato, and cucumber topped with cheese, bacon, avocado, and croutons tossed in a homemade ranch dressing. Our favorite appetizer is the calamari with lemon butter sauce, and our favorite dessert is the seasonal strawberry shortcake. If you’d like to try Blue Ridge Grill at their Brambleton location, there is outdoor patio seating or indoor dining. Inside there is also a bar with two TVs. Although you cannot make a reservation you can call in to get on the waitlist for priority seating. P RECIOUS PETS

Wonderful Willow Meet a gentle giant of the dog world!

BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER PRESLEY MCLAUGHLIN • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY MIGHTY CLEAN CARPET CARE

Have you seen a large black dog walking around in the Grove? If you have, that could be my Black Russian Terrier (BRT). Her American Kennel club (AKC) name is “Midnight Rider’s Etta Place”, but we call her Willow. At 2.5 years old, Willow is 29 inches at the withers and weighs 110 pounds. BRTs are still new to the AKC, only recognized in the working dog class since 2004. BRTs were bred in the USSR during WWII using mainly the Airedale Terrier, Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler and the Newfoundland. They were created to be a working dog for the Russian Army, to Guard outposts in the coldest climates. BRTs are majestic animals, with their jet black coats and stately beards. Owning a guardian dog breed requires a lot of socialization and training. We socialized Willow with as many people and dogs as possible as soon as we brought her home. She does very well around dogs and people and is excellent with kids and babies. Willow is very protective of our family and the kids on our street, that’s why it was so important to train and socialize her correctly. Although she loves to play, it can be hard to find a dog for Willow to play with because she is so big. We usually let her chase us in the yard for fun, but she also steals our footballs and soccer balls while we play a game. My favorite memory with Willow is holding her as a puppy; she was 35 pounds when she came from the breeder and could fit in my lap! Now that she’s fully grown, my favorite time with her is when she asks for snuggles before bedtime or seeing Share your pet pics her play like crazy in the snow. If you see us out with us! Dr. Kanumilli is a wife, mom and proud resident of the Willowsford community. She and her family – including husband Vinod, children Abhinav (age 11) and Anika (age 9) love to be a part of the Grant neighborhood and actively participate in the community events and gatherings. Abhinav and Anika are proud to be a part of the Willowsford Waves North Swim Team. Dr. Sowmya Kanumilli firmly believes that dental treatment must start and end with the needs of the patient. She takes the time to get to know her patients and understand their situation – what they hope for with their smile, what concerns they have, and what treatments they are and are not willing to pursue. Her aim is to provide patients with information and opportunities, allowing them to make confident choices about their own dental health. What’s your favorite dental hygiene tip?

Practice good oral hygiene. Brush teeth thoroughly twice a day and floss daily between the teeth to remove dental plaque and visit your dentist at least once/twice a year. What’s something special about your practice that you’d like patients to be aware of?

Aldie Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located at the Gum Spring library building and has been providing dental care to patients for more than 12 years. The staff at Aldie Family & Cosmetic Dentistry provide outstanding dental care to adults, teenagers and children (ages 3 and 46

What’s something special about your practice that you’d like patients to be aware of?

We will take the time to get to know you and your family to make sure you will be encouraged to come back and see the dentist. A massive part of the Bloō Dental appointments is ensuring your kids build positive associations with dental exams and cleanings. When kids have a great dental experience, they establish good dental hygiene practices at home. Having good habits is imperative for a healthy and beautiful smile. 3/ BOBBIO FAMILY DENTAL - DR. Dr. Lynn Alexander of Lux Dental and Family

What’s something special about your practice that you’d like patients to be aware of?

My brother Jason (also a prosthodontist) and I opened up our own dental practice because we really value our relationships with our patients, and we strive to offer them a truly personalized experience. We know that healthcare appointments can sometimes feel rushed, cold, and sterile, so we never want our patients to feel like a number and we always pride ourselves in offering compassionate care. A lot of this involves truly getting to know our patients and their families on a personal level, and on a clinical level, it involves educating our patients down to the smallest and most minute detail. Ultimately, we want our patients to understand the nuances of all the different moving parts and pieces in their personal oral health care. Our team also tries our best to break down healthcare barriers by encouraging our patients to express any concerns they have. A lot of the fear involved with visiting the dentist is the fear of the unknown and not knowing what comes next. Once our patients know what to anticipate, then so much of the dread and anxiety involved with visiting the dentist disappears. Do you have a “Healthy Living” story or event you would for us to feature? Please email billie.rose@Strollmag.com!

4/ LUX DENTAL CENTER - DR. LYNN ALEXANDER

“I’m a big advocate for educating my patients on their dental health, and making them equal and active partners in their own oral health care. My husband, Brendan, is a lead data engineer and he is originally from Rhode Island. We met in Minneapolis when I was doing my prosthodontics residency there, and we later moved to Virginia from San Francisco about 7 years ago. We have a son who is 5 years old, a daughter who is 19 months old (going on 19 years old!), and a very energetic 7-year-old labrador retriever. We live in the Grant!” What’s your favorite dental hygiene tip?

I know flossing is the absolute last thing most people want to do at the end of a long day. Many people buy water flossers to motivate themselves to floss, as it’s quicker and easier to use than traditional floss. However, a lot of people who buy water flossers ultimately end up not using them because they’re discouraged by how messy they can get. The recommendation I usually give my patients is to use a cordless water flosser instead, so you can use floss in your shower and not worry about spraying your mirror and pajamas right before bed!

February 2024

In summary, Dr. Kanumilli at Aldie Family Dental prioritizes patient empowerment with 18+ years of experience. Dr. Rahim of Bloo Dental focuses on oral hygiene and whole-body health. Dr. Bobbio at Bobbio Dental exceeds expectations with a family-centered approach. Dr. Alexander of Lux Dental advocates patient education and compassionate care. LIVING SPACES

HEART OF THE HOME A stunning kitchen and cozy keeping room attracts all of the activity in a family home! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER AMELIA MACCHIAROLO THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HARRIFORD EXTERIOR RESTORATION

My neighbors, The Douds, have a beautiful indoor living space. I asked Miss Lexie, a Realtor with Shepherd Home Group, to tell me about their kitchen and keeping room rooms! What is your favorite feature of this space?

I love the contemporary feel and the mix of lacquer and textured wood. We changed the layout when we renovated, and now the space flows better. How does your family use this space?

This is where we spend the majority of our time. My boys snack around the clock and love to watch sports on the sofa in the family room. I love that the space is open and I can still be a part of the action, even when I’m in the kitchen. Does your job as a realtor give you inspiration for the design?

1000%! I am always thinking of projects and gaining inspiration from homes I tour with my buyers and sellers. I love all aspects of real estate and design. My style leans more modern/contemporary, but I can appreciate all styles. I’m always searching for inspiration and find it in glamorous properties but also from those that need work. I have a million ideas on how I would transform those that need a little TLC. What’s your favorite part of renovating a space?

Seeing my vision come to life! What is your favorite thing to do in this space?

I love to hang out and enjoy time with all of my boys! What is your next project?

That’s a great question!!! Black windows or a closet addition, I think! Thank you to Miss Lexie for her time and awesome spaces!

Eclips Salon STYLE REDEFINED: YOUR ULTIMATE HAIR EXPERIENCE AWAITS WRITTEN BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL

S

eeking a fresh and dynamic haircut and color treatment that highlights your individuality but also reflects current fashion statements? If you answered yes, then you’ll need to schedule a consult with Eclips Salon as its stylists are committed to this promise. Owner of both the Ashburn and South Riding Eclips salons, Stephanie Dillenseger, says it’s imperative for hair salons to maintain a thorough understanding of the ever-evolving trends to best serve their clientele. “By doing so, they ensure that their customers leave feeling confident, stylish, and satisfied with their overall salon experience,” she explains. The strategy to invest their time and resources keeping up with the latest styles and trends has been an invaluable strategy for Eclips. The teams at the two locations pride themselves at being at the forefront of the industry and meeting the ever-growing demands of their fashionconscious clientele. “Our team loves to watch how hair and fashion evolve over time,” says Stephanie. “The different trends keep our creativity flowing. From the current “Cowboy Copper” trend to the fun creative hair color movement to very precise cutting techniques, we love it all. We are constantly expanding our knowledge and skill set to offer what is current and trendy to traditional and classic.”

In addition to staying on top of the latest looks, Stephanie says the Eclips team prioritizes the guest experience in their salon, noting “customer satisfaction” is always number one. “Our team is kind and treats everyone with the same respect. Our priority is to make them feel secure and understood, adapting each appointment to fit their individual needs, whether it is changing what the stylist is doing during their appointment to fit their beauty budget

or even having a silent appointment because the client just needs time to relax or work.” Stephanie explains that Eclips Salon is an educational salon, meaning they offer an apprenticeship program in addition to advanced classes for tenured stylists. “We offer the apprenticeship program through the state in our salon and have for the last 12 years. We are proud of the program we have and continue to grow as an alternative to a traditional cosmetology school for students.” One of the most notable attributes about the salon is the family feel. Stephanie says the team has a strong bond that’s grown stronger over time. “Our guests, time and time again also tell us that our salon environment is very welcoming and gives a comfortable feel. As a team we support each other, and our goal is to that every guest has great experience,” she adds. Outside of delivering an exceptional salon experience, Eclips contributes to the community that it serves. Stephanie says they find it important to give back in as many ways as possible. “For the last 6+ years we have helped raise over $200,000 for St. Baldrick’s Foundation by shaving heads to raise money for childhood cancer. We work with the LAWS program and donate not only hair services but hair care products to help get women back on their feet after leaving abusive relationships. We work with Loudoun Academy’s Cosmetology program by teaching classes as well as taking part of the many career fairs within Loudoun County.” From classic styles to signature cuts, bridal makeup, lash extensions, to complex color treatments, Eclips Salon covers it all. School counselors nurturing minds and dreams

BY RESIDENTS AND JUNIOR WRITERS ALEX MACCHIAROLO AND CICI THOMAS • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY VILLA MONTESSORI STONE RIDGE

National School Counseling Week is this month, so our Stroll Junior Writers had a chat with some of our school community’s counselors to learn more about what they do, and how they can work with families! Hey everyone! Today, I got to talk with Ms. Belscher, the excellent counselor at Elaine Thompson Elementary School! Before becoming our counselor, she spent five years helping people at a mental health agency. But you know what? She wanted to work with kids, so now she’s my school counselor! Ms. Belscher’s role is interesting. She shares “roller coaster breathing” skills to help kids handle their

I had the honor to interview Mrs. Mauck. Teachers are more than you think, and school counselors are very important for elementary schools because kids are beginning to develop academic self-concept and life skills. A school counselor is important because they guide students in navigating their emotional changes. Please enjoy my interview with Mrs. Mauck, one of Hovatter Elementary’s amazing counselors. What is it like being a school counselor?

It is extremely exciting, something new happens every day! We are uniquely trained to teach students learning strategies, social skills, selfconfidence and individual success. This is done through classroom lessons, small counseling groups and individual counseling. When was there a time at your job when you felt very excited about what you taught?

feelings. She’s all about teamwork and works with parents to support kids at home and school. What makes Ms. Belscher happy is seeing kids using the skills and tools she teaches to be successful! In February, during School Counselor Week, she plans to highlight the role of a school counselor to our community, teachers, and kids and celebrate mental health, which she says is just as important as math, literacy, and Virginia studies. Fun fact: Ms. Belscher loves the outdoors and hanging out with her Golden Retriever, Jackson. She’s run in five half-marathons and enjoys going to the beach and spending time with her family.

as test-taking or time management. I love seeing my students use those skills in action. I also really enjoy teaching my career exploration unit. It is fun to hear my students share their goals and aspirations for the future. Why did you want to become a school counselor?

That is a great question. I always loved working with the kids, my first job was as a babysitter. The biggest push to be a counselor was from my experience in elementary school. I wanted to be an adult in the building that students could trust, rely on and go to at a time of need. I also want to make sure all students feel happy, healthy and safe at school. Did you want to be anything else besides a counselor?

I originally wanted to be a marine biologist. Anything else you’d like to share?

I get really excited when I teach This is also a great resource that students coping skills such as deep we would love families to have, so The counseling team at Hovatter Elementary breathing, counting to ten, relaxation they can understand our role better. strategies and other tools that they can use during the school It is called “Why Elementary School Counselors,” and it is day, especially when they are facing stressful situations such published by the American School Counselor Association. 58

Miss Rose is a member of the Hovatter School Counseling team. Her mother was a High School English as a Second Language (ESOL) teacher and she heard a lot of stories about students that her mom wanted to help, but often felt limited on time. Hearing those stories inspired Miss Rose to be one of the people in a school building that can help students in and outside their classrooms. Every day is an adventure as a school counselor. They get to do everyday activities like teaching classroom lessons, eating lunch with groups of students, and helping students one one-on-one if they need it. Mrs. McLelland is also a member of the Hovatter School Counseling team. Mrs. McLelland became a school counselor because of her experiences in elementary school. She loves to help advocate for the needs of all students. She wants to support kids emotionally and help them apply interpersonal skills so that they can achieve academic success. She loves being a school counselor because every day is different and she has the opportunity to build relationships with students and their families. From my own experience, I can tell you Mrs. Mauck is amazing and very kind. She successfully resolved a conflict between myself and a fellow student. It’s important to note that Mrs. Mauck does not work alone, she has a great team at school who work together to bring valuable lessons to all students. In conclusion, teachers and counselors are a lot more than you think. They are not here only to teach us but to help kids learn and navigate important life skills like friendships and emotional intelligence. They’re just like us, but they’re adults.

Come see how our unique program of authentic Montessori and Reggio inspired curriculum allows your child to lead the way!

Pedaling Progress Enhancing bike trails could mean a better riding experience.

BY RESIDENTS AND JUNIOR WRITERS KIRAN CORYEA, HENRY VOOYS, AND LUCAS VOOYS • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE ST. JAMES FC VIRGINIA

We all love going on a walk or bike on the local Willowsford trails but there is one thing that we feel is missing: trails for the up-and-coming and experienced mountain bike generation. We need a trail with lots of jumps, berms, wood features and more to progress the bike riding around our neighborhood. If you go on the trails around Willowsford, you will notice that there are very few mountain bike trails with features that will be challenging while also enjoyable. Just adding some simple dirt jumps and berms can make the Willowsford Trails much more fun for the mountain biking community. Henry: I love to bike in the Greens and we enjoy it a lot but we could make it even more enjoyable. To jazz up the trails, some tweaking to make more wooden features to trails such as The Bull Run Overlook would be fun. Just adding some small dirt and wooden features to help with the flow of

62

the trail could dramatically improve the whole feel of your bike. We’re not saying there needs to be hundreds of new features but some additions to make it a little bit more challenging would make the trails go from 10 to 20. Not only that but we also know that many other non-biking residents love walking these trails so maybe some other trails specifically for bikers so they don’t disrupt other walkers. Lucas: I have gone riding on the Willowsford trails in the Greens with my brother and sister. We have gone riding near the rock garden and have enjoyed some trailside features. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great flow sections and I love the technicality of the rock garden, but there are some sections that could use some work. I have noticed that there are a couple of sections where it feels like you are riding through a bumpy field. I think if you dig just a little bit to have a small complete dirt path, it would add to the trail to make it flow smoother. Kiran: Something that I notice is that on all the trails is that there are always walkers. This is why I think we need some trails just for mountain biking. If we do this we will be able to bike on the trails and not have to stop to get around the walkers. We know that the walkers also

find this an inconvenience and frustrating, and if you have a dog you won’t have to worry about them barking or trying to get out of the leash when bikers come by. There are also areas in the Villages that are better for mountain biking than for trail walkers, so we could easily separate walking trails from mountain biking trails. This is why I think we need better trails and separate trails for mountain bikers. A few features that we could add to make the trails better could be skinny bridges, rollers, doubles, pump track, and dirt jumps. Skinny bridges can add some fun and technical parts to the trail while rollers can help you gain speed for dirt jumps which will provide high-speed fun! A small yet fun pump track could introduce some fun and interesting rides. In the end we appreciate and love to bike on the Willowsford trails This is our dream wishlist of what to add if given the chance!. There are so many fun trails to ride and enjoy while being completely surrounded by nature. We think that Do you have a story if Willowsford just adds some more about athletics, fitness or sports? technical features to the trails all around Share with us! billie. lison and Frank Blackstone are empty nesters now, but they have great memories of their time as baseball parents to their two sons. Kent, now 29, played baseball, soccer and basketball before concentrating on baseball as a junior at Marshall High School. He was the Washington Post All-Met Shortstop his senior year, going on to play D1 baseball at New Mexico State and George Mason, where he earned his business and marketing degree. He went pro for five years, playing for New Zealand, Australia, and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs before retiring. “He has MLB baseball cards from about 50 guys he played with or against,” said Frank. “[He’s had] quite a ride.” Kent is now a land acquisition analyst for Toll Brothers, a leading luxury home builder, and lives in Nashville. He made time to play second base on Team Great Britain in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, helping beat France, Germany and Spain! Mitch, 26, played the same sports as Kent before concentrating on baseball at Marshall. He was the Washington Post All-Met Catcher his senior year, and a two-time Virginia State Player of the Year. He played for Cornell, earning his degree in industrial labor relations. After graduating from University of Denver Law School he joined cannabis giant LivWell-PharmaCann, in compliance and government affairs. Alison was born in Folkestone, the town where the Chunnel enters England. She came to the US on the Queen Mary at age two, when Pfizer relocated her father (then chief medical director) and mother (a Royal Academy-trained actress). Alison graduated from Marymount University with a marketing degree and started her career at Electronic Data Systems (EDS).

Frank grew up on a farm near Zelienople, PA. He graduated from Northwestern with a degree in economics and music and started his career with IBM before working his way through George Washington University Law School, all while playing keyboards professionally. Alison and Frank were both working for EDS when she walked into Frank’s boss’s office while Frank was there. As he puts it, he didn’t know what she was selling, but he was buying! The rest is history. They were relocated to Texas, where both boys were born. Frank eventually moved into private practice, representing clients as varied as the Dallas Cowboys, Ross Perot, and Porsche. Alison took a break to raise the boys, and after the family came back to Virginia, she worked for the Loudoun County Public Schools. After 17 years in Tysons Corner, the Blackstones moved to Willowsford in 2015. “We were so impressed with the Arcadia design, the open space and trails, the Farm, and the Conservancy,” Alison said. “Plus, we get phenomenal sunsets from our backyard, looking as far as the mountains.” These days, Frank serves as Senior Counsel at Cloudera, a California-based IT company, has volunteered on the Willowsford Board for the past four years including the Strategic Planning Committee this last year, and was recently appointed to the Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Open Space Board. Alison recently joined ServiceNow, also a large California-based IT company, as a Business Management Analyst supporting their Federal Sales team. In addition to years of memorable trips around the boys’ baseball careers, the Blackstones, whose family motto is “Whatever it Takes,” have seen New Zealand, the Bahamas, Urugay, Argentina, and the wonders of the Southwest, including the Grand Canyon and recently returned from a family vacation celebrating the holidays in the Turks & Caicos. And of course, they’ve visited Alison’s family in England and Scotland, along with touring Italy, Germany and Austria.

erman and European cars are known for their exceptional performance, quality engineering, and advanced technology. However, like all vehicles, they require regular maintenance and occasional repairs to keep them running smoothly. To ensure the longevity of these cars, it’s crucial to find a trusted auto repair shop that specializes in working with these treasured automobiles. When seeking an auto repair shop for German and European cars, it’s essential to choose a shop who has expertise in these specific makes and models. These vehicles often have unique characteristics that require specialized parts and equipment to diagnose and repair. When you bring your luxury car into IMA Motorwerke in Chantilly, you know you’re dealing with the most

qualified and skilled technicians for German and European cars around. The family-focused business is staffed with technicians who focus their training and expertise specifically on Audi, BMW, Mercedes, MINI, Porsche, Volkswagen, and Volvo make and models. The shop is owned by Ivan Arzola. His son, Ivan Jr., is a service writer and an apprentice technician. “IMA Motorwerke is a one-stop, end-of-line kind of shop, meaning that there is no challenge that we cannot and have not conquered,” says Ivan. “It does not matter what the severity of the issue is or how many people/shops wrote it off as irreparable. If it rolls through our door, we will be sending it home running like it is fresh off the factory line with a happy customer in the driver seat.”

Clients of IMA Motorwerke can always expect top-notch service. Ivan describes the crew as an “encyclopedia of knowledge.” He says at the initial intake, customers can expect a discussion in detail about their vehicle. After that, Ivan says, “we assess the condition of the car not only with a test drive, but also with a detailed multi-point inspection.” Once the inspection is completed, an estimate is written for the recommended work. From there, the team will discuss by phone or in person detail by detail, as transparently as possible. “One thing we pride ourselves on is transparency, we are not technicians looking to spend all your money, we are also advisors, we want to make sure that your car is in the best shape it can be without selling work that the vehicle does not require,” adds Ivan. When time is of the essence, one of the great ways customers of IMA Motorwerke benefit, is a “quick turnaround” promise. He also points out that they’re “capable of fabricating specific parts here, from fuel and brake lines to custom-made aero body parts for race cars.” This has saved customers countless amounts of money by repairing or even fabricating parts for their classic cars that have been discontinued, he further explains. German and European cars demand the expertise of certified technicians and the use of genuine parts for their proper maintenance and repair. London Calling A family’s memorable journey across the pond BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER KIAAN SARAIYA FEATURE SPONSORED BY FORTIFY CHIROPRACTIC AND SPORTS REHAB

Looking for your next getaway? Look no further because England offers so many great experiences for all ages. In October, me and my family went to London and had so much fun. I would like to share with you some of the best places to go when you visit London. First, I recommend the London Eye. Though it is not thrilling, the London Eye offers a beautiful view of the city and costs as low as £21.00.

There is an automated tour guide that points out some of the most important buildings and structures as well. Second is the Changing of the Guard, which is a free show where visitors can show up and watch the guards of Buckingham Palace switch places. This show happens every day at around 11:00 am. Try to get as close up to the Palace as you can because you might be able to see some of the guards close up.

Keeping you going. B O O K Y O U R A S S E S S M E N T T O D AY !

Another fascinating place to visit in London is Madame Tussauds, a wax museum for celebrities and leaders. Inside the museum, you can walk around and see and touch incredible, realistic wax sculptures of famous people and characters from all over the world. Some of the figures I saw were Queen Elizabeth, Ed Sheeran, the Hulk, Nick Fury, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, Drake, Lil’ Nas X, and so many more. Additionally, there is a ride at the end which takes you through the history of London. I highly recommend visiting Madame Tussauds on your trip to London. Furthermore, one of the most famous attractions in London is their authentic Indian food. During my visit, I ate at countless delicious Indian restaurants, including a Michelin Star one. Some of my favorite Indian restaurants were Dishoom, Cinnamon Club, and Quilon. Finally, my personal favorite attraction in London was the London Dungeon, a haunted house that is right next to the London Eye. The London Dungeon tells 200 years of London history in a scary, fun, and interactive way. In the London Dungeon, you can expect tons of jumpscares, screams, and eerie sounds. The actors inside will often pull random people from the crowd and lock them in a cage, attempt to cut their head off, or uncover a dead body. At the very end, there is a thrilling ride called Drop Dead, in which riders plunge about 30 feet downwards, which gives a sensation of dropping to your death. One piece of advice I will give to you however is to go in the early fall or summertime since it is very cold during the wintertime. Also, quick tip, grab an umbrella and raincoat, as London is notoriously known for its surprise rainfalls. Overall, London is an amazing place to go on a family vacation, and I highly recommend the trip. I can assure you that it will create many memories.

FALLING FOR FOXCROFT

Junior writers eat, explore, and have a blast at a local school campus!

BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER HANNA STOLLE

School is now in session! No, I’m just kidding. But today we are going to talk about a very special school called Foxcroft. Foxcroft was founded in 1914 with a 500-acre campus. Foxcroft is so large that 93% of staff live on campus! Not to mention the 47 different buildings and the 5 dormitories! The dorms are for both boarding students, who come to Foxcroft from across the globe, and local day students, who can stay on campus a couple of nights each week! The school even has rentable turf fields for sports! This school is for girls in grades 9-12, with 150 students currently enrolled. One reason this school is so special is because of the approach to learning it has. Foxcroft has a 74

February 2024

very hands-on learning experience, complete with unique features like an Innovation Lab and equestrian center. During class, students experience education through realworld situations. They then apply that knowledge to everyday life. One of their most popular classes is the EPICS. This stands for engineering projects in community service. This program is working to help the community with issues and problems. This is the very program that raised grain for the Aldie Mill! In addition to being a very hands-on school, they also emphasize STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.) They even have a STEM challenge coming this month!

It will be an event for all girls from middle through high school hosted by Foxcroft. Hundreds of people go every year, competing in 20-30 teams. If you know a school that might be interested in signing up a team, you can visit the website at www.foxcroft.org. Aside from academics, Foxcroft has plenty of bonding experiences for students and staff alike, beginning with the tradition known as the Fox/Hound. It is the school’s way of “sorting” out students when they first arrive. Just like in Harry Potter — well, almost. There are two teams, Fox and Hound. When you get sorted you compete 3 times throughout the year, in all different sports of course. This tradition has become a part of Foxcroft. It was even featured in a previous article recently by two of our own Willowsford residents! Recently, our Junior Writers got to experience a taste of the school by having our November meeting there. Mr. Alex Northrup, the Director of the Innovation Lab, led our team through a group branding and logo exercise that resulted in custom shirts created for us based on our ideas! I spoke with Mr. Northrup afterward about the school and found out both of his daughters attended Foxcroft. “I know as both a teacher and a father what a great school it is!” he said. Before we go, we would like to give a shout-out to Wawa (grade 11) and Ariana (grade 10) - they are both incredible interns for the Innovation Lab. Wawa and Ariana help people find the tools they need to be successful in the lab, and they helped our team during our meeting there. My final review is this, Foxcroft’s academics, facilities, programs, and FOOD (definitely food) are the best I have seen in a long time. And I would just like to thank Admissions, the Marketing department, and the entire Foxcroft staff for hosting us and providing us with a delicious dinner! We hope to come back soon!
