NOTE FROM YOUR PUBLISHER

Cultivating Happiness Through Acts of Community Spirit

My loves, daughter, Haley (22), and son, Alex (26).

“The happiest people I know are people who don’t even think about being happy. They just think about being good neighbors, good people. And then happiness sort of sneaks in the back window while they are busy doing good.” - Harold S. Kushner Hello, Willowsford community residents, With the arrival of December, I find myself inspired by this quote, which reminds us that true contentment often emerges while we engage in acts of goodwill and community spirit. As we step into this festive holiday season, we are eager to embrace the opportunities it offers for connection and celebration. At the heart of Stroll Willowsford, our commitment to nurturing the bonds that unite us remains steadfast. Our mission stands firm, aiming to bring residents together on both personal and professional levels, creating a sense of belonging that enriches our lives, particularly during this joyous time of year. Each one of you remains a pivotal part of our community’s unfolding story. Your unique stories, photographs, and voices are what make Willowsford a remarkable place to call home. We invite you to share your experiences, from the delight of holiday traditions to treasured moments and valuable insights that the season bestows upon us. Our gratitude extends to the dedicated sponsors who stand by our side, many of whom are your neighbors. These local businesses are the backbone of Stroll Willowsford, enabling us to continue nurturing connections and celebrating our community during this special holiday season. When you’re in need of products or services, please consider supporting these trusted local partners. As we embark on this December journey, let’s fully immerse ourselves in the holiday spirit, come together, and celebrate the joy of the season with our families and the broader community.

With my husband, Frank, together since 1988 when we met as students at Virginia Tech, and married for 31 years!

With Holiday Cheer,

A Note from Tenant House BY REBECCA LYONS, CMCA®, PCAM®, LSM® WILLOWSFORD HOA COMMUNITY MANAGER

The holiday season is upon us, and we are celebrating December in style with Winter Wonderland (12/9 & 12/10), Holiday Cheer (12/14), Jingle Handbell Concert (12/17), and more! Please join us for one, or all, of these festive events. If you have not attended in the past, join your neighbors and begin a new Willowsford tradition. In addition to the fun events, winter may bring snow and ice. The responsible party for snow removal in Willowsford depends on which street you live on and may include VDOT, the HOA, or residents. Please visit the snow removal page of WillowsfordLife.com for the current street responsibility list and FAQs so you know what to expect and when. As 2023 comes to an end, I want to take time to thank all our Board and Committee members, as well as event volunteers. Willowsford would not be complete without its volunteers, and we cannot thank you enough for all the hard work and dedication you put into making Willowsford one of the most desirable neighborhoods to live in. We recently hosted a celebratory Volunteer Appreciation Dinner in November as a token of gratitude and hope to see even more new faces next year. The HOA Team and I would like to wish you and your family the very best of health, happiness, and success in the coming year. There is a great deal in store for Willowsford in 2024 and we are so glad that you are here to be part of it all. You should have received the 2024 HOA budget summary and annual letter via email. If you have questions about the approved HOA budget, assessment amounts for 2024, etc. please contact us at HOA@ willowsford.com. The budget, as well as the calendar of upcoming events, activities, and meetings, can also be viewed online at WillowsfordLife.com Stroll Willowsford

WILLOWSFORD HOA

Tis The Season BY MARLITH OPORTO-ROSSY, COMMUNITY STANDARDS MANAGER PHOTO BY MOLLY CASSON

HOLIDAY LIGHTING

It is that time of year again when the temperature drops, we take out our comfy clothes from our closets, enjoy warm drinks at the coffee shop, and prepare for the holidays. What better way to get in the holiday spirit than to decorate our homes and our hearts with holiday lighting! As many of you know, Willowsford has certain standards that need to be met regarding holiday lighting. A few of those standards are as follows, and as long as the criteria is met, prior approval would not be required: • Approval is not required for temporary holiday/seasonal decorations and lighting • Holiday/seasonal decorations and lighting shall represent the holiday/ season in effect during the time of the display • Holiday/seasonal decorations and lighting may be installed or placed on a Lot no more than thirty (30) days in advance of the holiday and shall be removed no later than twenty-one (21) days after the holiday • Rope, tape/strip, and string lighting are not permitted to be used as permanent holiday lighting • Power cords shall not cross over pathways, Open Space/ Common Areas, or landscape maintenance easements One thing that we’ve noticed each year is that there’s always a different trend regarding lights. This year the trend is “programmable permanent holiday lighting”. Have you considered this option to add to your home? If that is a yes, then I have good news for 18

December 2023

you! The Design Review Committee has recently revised the Property Maintenance & Design Standards and added permanent holiday lighting as an option; however, these lights must meet certain criteria and be approved by the DRC before installation. These lights are a great option for homeowners who are looking for an option that may require far less maintenance than regular lights. This option may not be for all, but it can definitely help those residents who are looking for a hassle-free holiday option. It is also important to note that safety precautions are essential during this time, and we strongly recommend seeking professional help to minimize any accidental fall or potential hazards. More information can be found within the Property Maintenance & Design Standards document located on the Willowsford Life website. CHRISTMAS TREE DISPOSAL

American Disposal Service will be collecting Christmas trees during the first two weeks of January. Please remove all decorations, lights, tinsel, and garland from the tree. Do not place trees in plastic bags. POST HOLIDAY RECYCLING TIPS

Consider hosting a swap party to trade gifts that you may not love with friends the gifts may be perfect for • Recycle gift wrap and boxes • Remember to break down boxes and place in the recycle bin; do not leave boxes outside of the bin • Recycle holiday lighting There are many local businesses that except old lights as well as mailin options

Two members of our Willowsford Conservancy leadership team, our Farm Manager Andrew Dunham and our Director of Land Stewardship Taryn McFarland, shared their favorite winter recipe that utilizes seasonal ingredients to make the most of your winter produce, such as root vegetables, and use them in a fresh dish like Kale Salad. Or try Taryn’s pick – a soul-warming pan of Sweet Potato Hash with sausage and farmfresh eggs. Our online Farm Store is available weekly at our Willowsford Conservancy, where you’ll find these winter staple recipes and more to try during the winter season. FARMER ANDREW’S KALE SALAD

• 1 bunch of kale • 1 Tbsp red miso • 1 Tbsp tahini • 1 Tbsp plum vinegar • 1 tsp. honey (add more to taste for sweetness) • Toasted nuts • Raisins/craisins DIRECTIONS

1. Remove kale leaf ribs and chop into ½ inch strips across the leaf. 2. Mix the miso, tahini, vinegar, and honey until creamy. 3. In a large bowl, massage the kale leaves by hand with the mixture until the leaves are evenly coated – your hands will be sticky, but it washes off easily with soap. 4. Place bowl in the refrigerator for approximately 30 minutes, top with 20

your choice of toasted nuts and dried fruit, then serve. SWEET POTATO HASH WITH SAUSAGE AND EGGS

BY MICHELE ROSEN (WITH TARYN’S NOTES)

This skillet sweet potato hash with sausage and eggs is a filling, savory, healthy meal for any time of day. Sweet potatoes, onions, peppers, and sausage with eggs cooked right into the hash, it’s Paleo and Whole30 friendly, plus delicious! • 3 Tbsp coconut oil divided, for cooking • 2 small/med sweet potatoes chopped into small pieces about 1/2 inch • 1 med onion chopped • 1 small/med bell pepper - red, orange or yellow, chopped • 1/2 lb fresh bulk sausage • 1/4-1/2 tsp paprika or smoked paprika • Sea salt and black pepper • Pinch red pepper flakes, optional • 4 eggs • Thinly sliced scallions for garnish DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Heat a large skillet, preferably cast iron, over medium heat and add 1 Tbsp of the coconut oil to melt. 2. Once sizzling, crumble the sausage into the pan and stir while cooking to brown evenly. Sprinkle with a pinch of red pepper flakes. When the sausage is about 3/4 of the way done, add the onions and peppers and continue to cook and stir until the sausage is browned and the onions and peppers are soft and fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside until the potatoes are done.

3. Meanwhile, in a separate skillet over medium heat, add the remaining 2 Tbsp of coconut oil to melt. Add the chopped sweet potatoes and stir to coat. Sprinkle with smoked paprika, sea salt, and pepper to taste. 4. Cook and stir, uncovered, until the outside begins to brown, then cover the skillet and continue to cook to soften the inside of the potatoes, uncovering to stir once in a while. Adjust the heat to prevent burning and add a bit more coconut oil if necessary. This step should take about 7 minutes total, give or take. 5. Once the potatoes are softened and browned, transfer them to the sausage mixture and stir to combine. Create 4 indents where you will crack each egg - then carefully crack the eggs into the spaces. 6. Put the entire skillet in the 400-degree oven to bake the eggs to preference, about 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, you can cook the eggs by covering the skillet and cooking over medium-low heat until the eggs are done. I prefer the oven method to avoid burning the bottom of the hash, but either way should work! Serve hot and enjoy!

JUNIOR WRITERS

Growing Curiosity: Junior writers explore farm-to-table delights at the Farm Stand! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER MADISON GRIFFIN

We had our October Junior Writer meeting at the Willowsford Farm Stand. At the Willowsford farm, they grow seasonal fruits and vegetables, available to purchase at the Farm Stand or through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares. They also sell products like honey, crackers, eggs, and more. Sarah Uhrig is the Conservancy’s new Program and Engagement Coordinator and she spoke at our meeting and brought samples! While we learned more about the Conservancy, we got to taste-test food from the Farm Stand! We sampled foods such as crackers, cheeses, snacking peppers, microgreens, pears, apples, honey and even the popular Nightingale ice cream sandwiches! My favorites were the apples, crackers, and ice cream sandwiches. At the farm, you can take tours, volunteer, and get some food there too! My favorite part of the meeting was getting to try the food. Some of the foods are from our local farms and other foods, like meat, are from neighboring farms they partner with. On the farm, they have over 500 hundred chickens! They have a farm dog named Luche too. I asked Sarah what she liked best about working at the Conservancy and she said that working at the farm made her want to eat healthier, with more fruits and vegetables!

NOTABLE NEIGHBOR

Honoring Drew Martin BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER EMMANUELLE REDDY THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE VIRGINIA INSTITUTE FOR SURGICAL ARTS

For this month’s notable neighbor nominee, we honor Drew Martin. Mr. Martin grew up in Wisconsin and moved to Virginia for work. He lives in the Greens with his wife, Lisa and two daughters, Julia and Clara. When he moved to Virginia, they lived in Brambleton first, but after visiting Willowsford to take his family for a walk with his dog, Sandy, he was attracted by the peaceful neighborhood and space. Mr. Martin works as a nurse at INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital, but this was not his first job. He was inspired to become a nurse after taking care of his father when he was diagnosed with cancer. Because of this life event, Mr. Martin joined the Fair Oaks team in 2015. Mr. Martins’s work involves being available to all levels of illness in the hospital, from the Emergency Room to the Intensive Care Unit. This requires him to be on his feet at all times, in any situation. Being a nurse requires sacrifice of time and commitment, sometimes away from family. Mr. Martin showed selfless commitment to his job during the COVID pandemic. As we all know, during this time, a lot of patients were separated from their families because they had to be quarantined in the hospital when they were sick with COVID. One perfect example of how he brought Humanity to Healthcare, was allowing patients admitted to the hospital, the ability to meet their family members so they can stay connected. He did this by spending a lot of time at the bedside with technology such as tablets. Mr. Martin has been with INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital for eight years. Being a nurse gives you the experience of working alongside other medical professionals. Because of this, Mr. Martin decided to go to nurse practitioner school and graduated from George Mason in 2022. He hopes to continue to work with physicians in the hospital in a different way. During his free time, Mr. Martin likes to play the saxophone and spend time with his family.

We feel grateful to have such a kind and giving person in our neighborhood. Do you know somebody who consistently puts others before themselves and supports others in need, whether large or small, but often flies under the radar? To nominate a fellow neighbor for this honor, send an email to billie.rose@strollmag.com.

SP ONSOR SP OTLIGHT

Legacy of Excellence and Innovation Loudoun Country Day School WRITTEN BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL

Loudoun Country Day School (LCDS) is not just a collection of buildings, but a carefully crafted environment that encourages learning and exploration. Each classroom is meticulously designed to create a welcoming and engaging space, where students feel comfortable and motivated to learn. The school serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade and offers a supportive and tight-knit community. Students and staff form strong bonds, through traditions that have been valued and passed down through 70 years of educational excellence. With its proximity to Willowsford, the institution is an ideal choice for residents who wish to have smaller classrooms and a wealth of resources on hand to enhance student learning. The caring nature of the teachers ensures that students feel valued and supported, both academically and emotionally. This personalized attention fosters a love for learning, encourages student engagement, and helps each student reach their full potential. Check out a few of the ways that LCDS delivers topnotch education. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

LCDS’s experiential, hands-on model of learning empowers students to become self-directed learners and confident leaders. Immersive projects with real-world impact allow students to apply the problem-solving skills they’ve cultivated since enrolling at the school. Here are a few examples: 26

December 2023

• Embryology: Second-grade classrooms are filled with dozens of chick eggs and incubators to help students study embryology using math, language arts and science. • Ancient Egypt Museum: Sixth graders create and run

their own Ancient Egypt Museum. Serving as docents, they provide tours through an exhibit hall of hieroglyphics, pyramids, mummies, tombs, and jewelry. • Coffee House Poetry Readings: The eighth-grade poetry unit culminates each winter with a public performance at a local coffee house. Each student writes a poem incorporating various literary devices, such as metaphor and alliteration. • Garden Lab: The Garden Lab provides fertile ground for academic growth as students work collaboratively to plant, observe and study cross-curricular projects. Every grade has their own plant bed. SERVICE LEARNING

LCDS fosters moral responsibility through project-based learning and service. Beginning in prekindergarten, students lead and participate in community initiatives, raising funds for charities and working with esteemed organizations and local nonprofits. In the STEM lab, students create inventions with positive societal impact, like 3D-printed prosthetic

hands. These hands are tested and donated to those in need. These activities cultivate a lifelong humanitarian spirit, alongside academic excellence. LCDS prepares students to be responsible global citizens. STEM

“The school has excellent teachers who create a supportive learning environment. I really love the classrooms. They’re well equipped and provide an amazing learning space. The school emphasizes experiential learning, allowing students to engage in hands-on activities, which my kids love. One of my favorite aspects about the school is that they encourage community service projects, fostering a sense of social responsibility in the children. My kids also love that field trips are a regular part of the curriculum, which enhances their learning experiences.”

LCDS’s STEM program is an immersive lab experience, with classes that build on each other to provide a strong foundation of skills. From designing robots to building underwater vehicles, students are engaged in hands-on learning that begins in prekindergarten. Coursework is designed to cultivate responsible digital citizenship, foster creative problem solving and facilitate an environment where students see themselves as innovators. Students learn researching skills, programming, robotics, the engineering design process, print and multimedia presentations, video production, basic electronics, 3D design and printing, and more.

WORLD LANGUAGES

The Lower School offers an immersive language program from 1st to 5th grade, focused on Spanish and French. Students study vocabulary, grammar, reading, sentence structure, and verb conjugation, while also exploring Spanish-speaking cultures. By 5th grade, students can confidently write coherent sentences and engage in basic conversations in both languages. In Middle School, students choose between Spanish and French and take World Language classes four times a week. The curriculum covers Spanish or French levels 1 and 2, incorporating reading, oral dialogs, writing, and comprehension activities. MUSIC

Beginning in prekindergarten, LCDS students are introduced to music and movement. In kindergarten through third grade, they receive instruction in general music and choral singing. In fourth grade, students attend an instrument petting zoo to choose from 18 options. From fourth to eighth grade, all students participate in choir and choose band or orchestra. The music curriculum includes public performances. Loudoun Country Day School 20600 Red Cedar Dr, Leesburg, VA 20175 (703) 777-3841 Lcds.org

CELEBRATIONS

Radiant Traditions: Illuminating unity with a neighborhood Menorah Lighting BY RESIDENT GOLI TIFFIN • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY CAPITAL TRIMLIGHT

It was a rainy spring day during the height of the pandemic when our offer for a beautiful home in Willowsford was accepted. Willowsford offered everything we wanted for our three young children: playgrounds, walking trails, activities, excellent schools, and a sense of community. My husband and I looked forward to getting away from some of the hustle and bustle typical of the Washington, D.C., suburbs. As a Jewish couple, one of the most essential factors in buying a home was the presence of a Jewish community. We looked forward to our children growing up in a neighborhood as diverse as Willowsford. It was also important to us that they have an opportunity to celebrate their own traditions with other children their age. We checked the Willowsford Calendar, and while there was an annual Christmas Party and an Easter Egg Hunt, there weren’t any events specific to the Jewish holidays. As we entered our first December in our new home, we were amazed at how beautifully our neighborhood was transformed by holiday lights and decorations. To participate in the festivities, we also put up blue and white holiday lights outside our home, which was a first for both my husband and me. As Hanukkah was only a few days away, we also decided to host a public Menorah lighting. We assumed there had to be other Jewish families in the neighborhood, and some would want to participate. I got on the phone and called every local synagogue and Jewish Community Center. We needed a large Menorah to share with the community but needed to figure out where to get one. That’s when Rabbi Chaim Cohen of Chabad of

Loudoun County came to our rescue. The following day a sixfoot-tall Menorah was sitting on our front lawn. It was only two days before Hanukkah when we posted an invitation on the Willowsford Facebook Group. We offered to host a backyard reception with latkes, sweets, and music. It was an open invitation for anyone in the community who wanted to participate. We knew it was short notice, and we weren’t sure what kind of participation we would get. We thought that, perhaps, nobody would show up. The response was terrific. Despite the last-minute invitation, we had over fifty residents of all faiths gather at our home for the first night of Hanukkah. We lit the Menorah, sang songs, and shared our traditions and the holiday spirit. After the isolation imposed by the pandemic, it was also a fantastic opportunity to meet many of our neighbors. The success of this event led to the founding of the official club “Shalom Willowsford.” In Hebrew, Shalom means “peace,” “hello,” and “goodbye.” Shalom Willowsford welcomes members of all faiths who want to participate in or learn about Jewish holidays and traditions. Since its founding, Shalom Willowsford has hosted a wine and cheese night, a challah bake, several children’s events, and our second annual Menorah Lighting in 2022. We are thrilled to announce that our 3rd annual Menorah Lighting will be on Saturday, December 9 at 7:00pm at Willow Lake, near Willowsford Lodge. Everyone is welcome to attend! Need some design help? B e I n s pire d by N alin i!

Full service interior design, right in the comfort of your home.

Recently, some of our neighbors in the Grove village gathered to hold a Wing Smoke Off at Twin Pond Pavilion. The rain didn’t keep us away, we had 9 contestants! The winner earned bragging rights and a trophy to match! The Commanders game played on a tv we managed to hook up, everyone enjoyed a potluck of wings, sides, and desserts, and the kids had fun running around to complete a scavenger hunt! I painted the scavenger hunt with watercolors in my home studio. Two sweet middle schoolers helped to pass out the scavenger hunt to all the kids…. and they all immediately took off! It was a simple hunt but we had a ton of fun. Kids explored all over the pond looking for a spotted rock, a stick in the shape of a letter, and something burgundy and gold. They earned a small treat at the end when they completed it. This neighborhood is the best. We are truly blessed with amazing families. Rain or shine! What’s happening in your neck of the woods? Foxcroft School promises a lifetime of friendships and global connections

First Month at Foxcroft School: Resident students share their experiences! BY RESIDENTS POPPY M. AND MICHAELA W. THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY VILLA MONTESSORI STONE RIDGE

L

ocated in Middleburg, Foxcroft School is a day and boarding school for girls in grades 9-12 and postgrad. The 2023-24 school year has gotten off to a busy and exciting start, with engaging classes, special events for the community, athletic and riding competitions, special guest speakers, the launch of the “Project STEAM Build” seminar, and more. Two Willowsford residents — Poppy M. and Michaela W. — are experiencing all the fun as freshmen! Both girls are day students at Foxcroft, where intentional programming supports day and boarding students building strong friendships and connections with the entire community. Having spent the first month of school full-time on campus, day students are now welcome to stay overnight a few nights a week and have their own beds, desks, and dedicated space in the dorms. They might even be roommates with a student from across the globe! Read more about Poppy and Michaela’s experiences in their own words below.

Fox/Hound Sing Sings

Dorm Bonding!

FROM POPPY M., FOXCROFT CLASS OF 2027

Hello, my name is Poppy and I’ve been living in Willowsford for ten years. I found out about Foxcroft through my previous school, The Hill School, in Middleburg. I’ve known about Foxcroft for years and have always wanted to go here ever since first grade. This is how my experience is as a freshman so far. After my first month here I’m very close with everyone in my class. Even though living with my whole class in a dorm can be very tiring, it’s very fun and you never get bored here. On my second day here we had something called Fox/Hound Choosings. This is where we find out if we are a Fox or a Hound which are the in-school teams rooted in a longstanding tradition at Foxcroft. We have these things called Sing Sings which are kind of like pep rallies here we scream our team songs and make so much noise — it was probably one of the most memorable moments I had so far. As a freshman, I had to get used to this new schedule, especially the 10:30 bedtime, but after a while, it was very helpful and very much needed. After the first month of boarding full-time, the campus opened and I was then able to go home as a day student. I was really excited to go home, but I always miss this school when I’m at home and just think about when I’m able to go back. At Foxcroft, living partially on campus is really fun. Many of the teachers live on campus, and some teachers have apartments in the dorms. It’s a very nice experience because if I have a question about homework and need to send an email at 9 pm, they’ll often respond quickly. I also love the grading system here — it’s very helpful for me and other students. This semester we had a lab report in Physics class on motion. The lab was very easy to follow along with, just had a lot of steps and math. It was probably my favorite major assignment so far. After being here for a month, I’m in love with it here and I’m very happy I made this decision to attend Foxcroft!

FROM MICHAELA W., FOXCROFT CLASS OF 2027

I have lived in Willowsford for over 11 years. I found Foxcroft through my old school, The Hill School. Foxcroft is a welcoming and inclusive community. Everyone is supportive of you and tries to make your experience the best. When I first got here I was nervous because I was going to a new school after spending eight years at my old school. At Foxcroft, you are immediately welcomed by the teachers, whips and prefects (our student leaders), and your Old Girls. My favorite memory at this school so far is Sing Sings. When you get to Foxcroft you get chosen as part of two groups, the Foxes and the Hounds, which is all part of the Fox/ Hound tradition. This gives everyone a chance to have some friendly competition within the school when we compete against each other a few times a year. Sing Sings are when the Foxes get together and the Hounds get together and we sing the songs

Michaela W.

that are designated to each group — and we dress up in our team’s colors! Foxes are mostly pink, blue, white, and silver. A big part of this school is responsibility. When you spend the first month on campus, you learn to take care of your space. You do your own laundry, keep your room clean, and get your work done on time, etc.

You also have to think about your responsibilities for academics and after-school activities. Just like any school, it is important to keep your grades up. You are given plenty of time for each assignment and if needed help with the teacher. Overall, my Foxcroft experience has been great and I am so happy I chose this school.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Shining Light on SUDC: A resident family forms a foundation to help others BY RESIDENT AND STROLL INTERN HANNAH CORBITT • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY LUX DENTAL CENTER

Raise awareness, educate others, and provide support. That is the mission of the Jackson Walsh Foundation, an organization that seeks to raise awareness, resources, and funds for Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC). This situation is a category of death in ages 1-18 and is the fifth leading category of death in children from ages 1-4 that remains unexplained after a thorough investigation. The organization was created in honor of Jackson Walsh, the son of the founder and Willowsford Greens resident, Kelsey Walsh. The Walshes started their nonprofit in memory of their son, a healthy 17-month-old boy who passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on the night of February 28, 2020. The family had never been informed of SUDC until their situation led them to the SUDC foundation. According to the Walsh family, Jackson’s siblings Harper (7), Blake (3), and Owen (1) attend the organization’s events in support of their brother. Since 2020 when the foundation was started, they have accomplished much in gaining support, raising awareness, and gathering resources and funds in support

of this cause. By the end of this year, the foundation will have donated over $250,000 to SUDC genetic research. They have also provided over 20 Owlet socks to families in need, sponsored school supplies for 5 kindergartens, funded families to attend a SUDC family retreat that couldn’t afford to go, and purchased holiday gifts for local children in need. “Jackson was truly a gift, his happy and fun personality was infectious, and he lit up any room he was in.” The Walshes describe. The Jackson Walsh Foundation has an annual golf tournament in the fall, a virtual fun run where family and friends gather on their street to participate, as well as the recipient of funds raised at the recent Stroll Friday Fun Night event with Cana Vineyards and Winery. If you are interested in getting involved with the foundation or any of the listed events, be sure to contact at thejacksonwalshfoundation@gmail. com or check out the website at https/ thejacksonwalshfoundation.org/ Stroll Willowsford loves highlighting people and organizations that help make a difference in our community. WHAT DRIVES US?

MAY THE HORSEPOWER BE WITH YOU:

Star Wars-themed cars take the road by storm! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER HANNA STOLLE THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HILLYARD AUTOMOTIVE

W

elcome back to What Drives Us. I am sure you all have seen the Star Wars-themed vehicles at local events or driving around the neighborhood. This is the story behind those amazing vehicles and more. Please welcome to the stage Eric Jacobs. Jacobs founded the Theresa Sondra Jacobs Foundation (TSJ) with his wife Ruba Jacobs. Jacobs always has had the hobby of building custom vehicles and loves Star Wars. He enjoys 3D printing and has a passion for learning. Before we tell you more about what the foundation is, we want to tell you more about how it came to be. Jacobs and his Mom created a lot of art projects together. His mom, Theresa, taught art, art history, and photography at Lake Braddock High School. When his Mom passed away it made sense to do something good with his passion and extend her legacy in education. TSJ was founded in 2017, shortly after his Mother passed. Jacobs combined his car-builds with bigger builds and droids. He wanted to incorporate education into his robots to engage

38

December 2023

kids. He dreamed of making learning fun and interactive, something kids would really appreciate. The foundation started only having volunteers and a couple of repurposed vehicles. After Jacobs had the idea he got his first volunteer, Matt Hammer. Hammer built the first droid, the BB-8. Felix Tao joined shortly after. He is the Chief Technology Officer. He brings all of the builds to life by incorporating electronics. Tao is an aerospace engineer. If he isn’t building something, he is at a charity event brightening people’s days. The small team eventually grew to a team of over 36 highly specialized and extremely talented builders. Now his dream has come true and he has built a team of amazing engineers and bright minds. These volunteers build incredible droids and robotics that you would see at places like Disney! TSJ has many different interactive programs. First, they have the Interactive Robotics Teaching System or the I-ARTS program. These robots are teaching kids how they work with their own programmed or live voices! The TSJ team talks on headsets to engage students through the droids. They are turning robots into teachers. Pretty cool right? TSJ supports STEAM or science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. These big supporters of STEAM have different interactive and fully functional robots. The crowd favorite is a real-life C-3PO that can talk, move, and interact in many different ways. That isn’t all! They also have the brand new Eco Crest mobile classroom! For those who are fans of Star Wars, this 30-foot-long mobile classroom is the place for you! The foundation’s latest project is building the massive

Mandalorian ship recreation, Razorcrest! TSJ is working on a museum concept design experience. And finally, there’s everyone’s favorite, the Star Wars-themed vehicles! Now we are going to DRIVE, deeper into why they were made. Get it? As you already know TSJ started off with a few Star Warsthemed vehicles. But now the program has 4 Star Warsthemed vehicles in the local outreach program! The start of the cars came from Jacobs and his family’s love of Star Wars. After countless hours of working on the project, it was ready for the public to see. “The goal for the foundation is to build a fleet of mobile classrooms as well as build museum experiences … All incorporating immersive STEAM experiences!” says Eric. The vehicles and droids are made to create smiles. They change people’s moods and make them feel better when they are down. Who knows, maybe a stormtrooper will sneak up on you while driving? Or a Mandalorian battle scene will take place

"Our family knows the high cost of repairing and maintaining your vehicle. My experience gained at a major auto dealership I know to exceed the expectation of each customer that comes through the door, whether for the first time or for a return visit. Let us care for you and your car. " - Mike Hillyard. HillyardAutomotive.com • 42750 Trade West Dr, Sterling, VA • 703-828-3900

while waiting at a stoplight? It will make you smile, and that is the true mission of the program. The heart of this foundation is to make a big splash with immersive learning. They want to make learning more fun for kids and introduce them to a fun type of interactive learning and maybe even meet some of their favorite characters in the process! Jacobs says “TSJ is a place for people to use their gifts to give back to the community. But we couldn’t have done any of this work without the amazingly talented team.” TSJ is a great place with an unbelievable story. This foundation has been a family endeavor that all family members pour their hearts into. It has introduced interactive learning in a new, never-seenbefore way. So we at Stroll would just like to thank Eric Jacobs and his team for all that they have done for our community. TSJ is always looking for donations or new sources of funding. Visit their website to make a donation or stay tuned to the latest TSJ news: https/theresasjacobs.org.

TOUR & TRAVEL

Seaside Escape: A memorable weekend getaway in Ocean City BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER SYDNEY SHAUGHNESSY THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY FORTIFY CHIROPRACTIC AND SPORTS REHAB

This past summer, my dad, brother, and I all went on a trip to Ocean City, Maryland and we had a lot of fun! Ocean City isn’t far from the Willowsford villages, about a 3 ½ hour drive. On the drive, you cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The Bay Bridge is over 4 miles long and some people say it’s the scariest bridge in the US. I think it’s a fun drive and love going over it. Ocean City is a beach town on the sandy Atlantic shore and there are a lot of things to do. Although it would have been fine to just relax at the beach, we also did a ton of fun activities on our trip. The first activity we did was a sunset tour boat ride down the bay. Be careful where you sit on the boat because if you’re sitting on the edge, when the boat turns you might get soaked (like my brother). On our ride, we even got to see dolphins! The boat

driver stopped so we could watch them and take photos. The timing was perfect, it was right at sunset and it was beautiful. The second activity we did was parasailing! In case you don’t know what that is, it’s a boat ride where you clip a parachute to your body and you float over the water. As the boat rides around you follow behind while in the air. My dad, brother, and I were all clipped together on our ride and it was the most fun thing I have ever done! I had a blast, we were 400 feet up in the air and it felt like I was up in the clouds. And since we were the first group on our boat to parasail, we waited for all the other people to ride after us so it was like a two-in-one adventure, parasailing and a boat ride. Our last activity was jet skiing, but just my brother and dad went. Other

activities we planned to do were mini golfing and meteor shower watching, but the weather didn’t cooperate. There are even more things to do in Ocean City like the Boardwalk with rides and arcades, water parks, go carts, camping, and of course lots of restaurants and places to eat. My favorite restaurant was Crepe Daddy, the crepes were delicious! I got a chocolate banana one, while my brother got a chicken and waffle one, and then my dad got a veggie omelet. On this trip, we had a great time and did so many different things I had never done before. We all had a great time and will hopefully be able to do it again soon. I highly recommend Ocean City if you’ve never been! We want to share your trips! Email Publication Manager Billie Rose at billie.rose@strollmag.com to get scheduled for a future feature!

Enchant is a magical light show at Washington Nationals stadium. It’s like a scavenger hunt and maze, with clues throughout the display. We have gone for the past two years, and it’s always a glittery, extravagant experience! Upon entering Enchant, you’ll notice the maze on the field, along with an ice skating path! You can enjoy ice skating, and afterwards warm up with yummy treats like hot cocoa, light-up cotton candy, kettle corn, and special drinks in light-up lightbulb glasses. We tried everything and liked the light-up cotton candy best! On the mezzanine around the field, you can visit Santa and play in the Kid Zone, as well as shop and enjoy a delicious dinner! Enchant always has a different theme each year. This year’s theme is Reindeer Games! We are lucky because Washington D.C. was not originally on this year’s city tour, but it got added back at the last minute! It is only hosted in seven cities throughout the U.S.! It is one of our favorite holiday traditions, and we look forward to going every year and we think you would too! Enchant this year runs through December 31. PRECIOUS PETS

Tiny Paws, Big Love: Learning to care for a new furry family member BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER ASHNA KUMAR THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY MIGHTY CLEAN CARPET CARE

Mochi was born on September 18, 2022, and was taken home by Carol, Giang, and their two young daughters, Emma (11) and Allie (9) on December 17, 2022. Emma and Allie had been asking for a puppy since they were old enough to speak. “Our parents never had pets growing up so at first, they were not crazy about the idea of having a pet,” Emma says. When Allie asked for a turtle for Christmas, Carol and Giang decided to go bigger and surprised them with a puppy.” Since it’s their first pet, they wanted to go small and choose a hypoallergenic breed. So a Maltese dog was the perfect choice for the Vus. From the first time they set their eyes on Mochi, they knew he was the one. He was not only playful but also had a laid-back temperament. “He was the sweetest and melted our hearts,” claims Emma. Mochi is both hypoallergenic and tiny, which was perfect for them as they were first-time dog owners. And when I say tiny, I mean teeny-tiny. He is so tiny that he will only get up to about 6 lbs max. As a family, the Vus spend a lot of their free time with Mochi. He really misses Emma and Allie when they are at school and activities. But luckily, Carol and

Giang’s job allows for at least one of them to be home with him during the day. The Vus agree that their life has changed in many ways since Mochi joined their family. Mochi’s toys are spread throughout the house, there is a playpen for him in the middle of the first floor, but most of all they need to ensure no little things are left on the floor so he doesn’t eat it. Some things outside of the house have affected their lives as well, such as fewer vacations and not going out to dinner often. But that doesn’t stop them from having fun away from home as well. If they do feel like going on a vacation, they can put him in a doggie camp. Mochi has not only given the Vu’s love for a new member of their family, but he has also created new responsibilities for Emma and Allie. “Allie and I are his older sisters, and we need to take care of him. We also must watch out for him because he is very small and can get hurt easily,” states Emma. The Vus’ advice for anyone looking to get a dog is this: you have to find a dog that is perfect for your family, whether it has to fit a family member’s allergies or to fit a family member’s preference in size or kind. And last but not least, you may feel like giving up but please give it some time and love them with all your heart. Share your pet pics with us! Email billie.rose@strollmag.com.

Making a Difference with Two Helping Hands BY RESIDENT TAMMY STEMBER THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY SOUTH RIDING PEDIATRICS

Imagine a family member collapses and you frantically call 911, but your call is mis-routed to an adjoining county. Or you are with your child at a remote location for a travel sports tournament and a player collapses on the field with no immediate emergency medical staff present. You’re out to dinner with friends and someone has an allergic reaction or chokes. Would you know what to do? These are some of the real-life emergency situations that I have experienced and following the growing media attention around CPR emergencies in sports, I realized I could make a difference in the community my family lives and my children participate in regularly. Two Helping Hands evolved from a passion to share my experience and training in aquatic safety, a former volunteer EMT Ambulance officer and a parent. By sharing, I realized I could empower others with the skills and confidence to respond effectively in emergencies, particularly cardiac arrest and other instances where immediate intervention can make a crucial difference in saving a life.

December 2023

Through Two Helping Hands I am a certified American Red Cross instructor for Adult and Pediatric CPR, various first aid modules, and babysitter training. During training I share stories and my experiences as a former EMT, and I encourage others to share their thoughts and experiences as well. Many individuals may feel anxious or unsure about performing CPR or even making a call to 911 to ask for assistance. In my classes we review the basics, such as when to call 911, what happens when you call and how to relay pertinent information to the 911 operator. When I teach babysitter training, pediatric CPR and first aid is always included in my classes, as it provides a broader perspective for childcare since emergencies can happen to anyone at any age. Finally, Two Helping Hands offers a flexible training schedule and class delivery format with a blended learning approach including an online portion and an in person review session, to accommodate busy lives to and suit everyone’s learning pace. Most training occurs in a group setting, but I have also found that some prefer a more private setting where specific situations or scenarios can be discussed and practiced in your own home or small business. My hope is to continue training within my community to increase the chance of helping others be prepared in an emergency. Contact me at cpr.twohelpinghands@gmail.com to see if I can help you! STRENGTHENING CONNECTIONS THROUGH THE W O N D E R S O F T R AV E L BY MARIA SMIETANA • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNY SESSOMS PHOTOGRAPHY THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY CHANTILLY NATIONAL GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB

Far beyond anything else, Sabeen and Sami Khattak love being parents to their two children and treasure their extended family. “When it comes to life, family is above everything,” is their motto. Their son, Saifullah, is 14 and a very serious student. “He’s a responsible, respectful child who works hard to get excellent grades in school and finish all his assignments on time,” said Sabeen. “He has always made us proud for his

compassionate behavior towards elders in our family, and for keeping a protective eye on his sister and younger cousins.” Saifullah particularly enjoys history and geography. Like any kid, he loves to play video games. His mom adds that he’s disciplining himself to be a regular at the gym and is getting back into taekwondo. Daughter Shanzay, 11, is more of a social butterfly and a little fashion diva. A Swifty at heart, she is happiest

when she’s making art or singing and dancing. Shanzay enjoys attending cultural festivals, which goes along with her love of dressing up. In school, her favorite subject is English, especially literature. She wants to learn more musical instruments and is currently studying violin. “Shanzay brings so much happiness in our family, Sami added.” She is a wonderful grandchild and niece to her

She loves to include everyone and stands up for anyone getting bullied.” The Khattaks have lived in the Greens for two years and enjoy Willowsford’s family-oriented vibe as well as community events like the 4th of July fireworks and the hayrides. Sami and Sabeen are originally from Pakistan, part of an ethnic group known as Pathans, who reside in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They attended college in Wichita, Kansas. Sami is in the FinTech space for over a decade with a thriving business that helps business owners accept credit card payments and POS systems. Sabeen works in real estate, which provides her with work-life balance and

great job satisfaction. “I love to meet people and help them through one of life’s biggest milestones,” she said. “I firmly believe a property in any form is a great asset and is the safest investment for the long run. I am always excited to see properties with my clients or list homes to welcome new homeowners.” Travel is what the Khattaks enjoy most. “One family tradition is visits to the Amalfi Coast and French Riviera, plus most importantly, our holy city of Makkah,” Sami said. “Saifullah especially is at an age where he enjoys our precious bonding time exploring nature, culture and different cuisines.” Recent memorable trips have been to Jungfraujoch and the Matterhorn in the Alps. Called the “Top of Europe,”

Jungfraujoch is surrounded by glaciers. “The observation deck has fantastic panoramas,” Sabeen said. “The kids enjoyed the cable car ride up the mountain, followed by a visit to the ice palace.” Zermatt, at the foot of the Matterhorn, was equally memorable. At 1600 meters, the town in Switzerland’s Valais Canton is renowned for skiing, climbing and hiking. “We realized the kids are capable of hiking and being in nature right alongside us,” Sabeen said. Wherever they are in the world, the Khattak family’s faith goes with them. “We thrive on the core values of a family unit and in the ways God blesses us,” Sami said. “We are forever grateful to our Lord Almighty.”

OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES

A RELAXING RETREAT: Backyard makeover creates a sleek space to unwind! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER KIAAN SARAIYA THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HARRIFORD EXTERIOR RESTORATION

It’s no question that the Marsden family has a beautiful oasis in their backyard thanks to the amazing work by Pristine Acres. From a pool and spa to a sunken fire pit lounge and pavilion with kitchen, the Marsdens just completed an amazing full-scale backyard renovation. Ryan and Dominique Marsden have two children, six-year-old Neva and sevenyear-old Isla. They have been living in the Grove for about two years now and love their modern house. Neva and Isla love the pool and spa, while Ryan and Dominique love the outdoor dining area and entertainment for hosting family gatherings and events with friends. The company that made all of this come true was Pristine Acres, a a design and build firm focused on creating custom luxury outdoor living spaces that was recently named Best of Design by DC Modern Luxury Magazine. The Marsdens made everlasting memories and friendships with some of the workers at Pristine Acres. The Marsden family wasn’t exactly sure what design they wanted while staying in line with HOA regulations, but Pristine Acres made it very easy for them to turn their backyard into a serene heaven. They were inspired for this project by Instagram, designer websites, and Pristine Acres’ portfolio. During the process of the project, some milestones that were memorable to the family were the pool dig, the pavilion framework, and the concrete shell sprayed. Pristine Acres were always there for questions about the progress of the projects. Once the final touches were done on the projects, the Marsdens took around 10 months to decorate and design. 72

December 2023

Some of the Marsdens’ favorite designers and inspiration come from House West Design, Devon Grace Interiors, Lori Paranjape, and Kelly Wearstler. When it comes to shopping for aesthetic furniture and accessories, they bought from Arteriors Home, Palecek, Made Goods, Phillips Collection, Visual Comfort (Kelly Wearstler and Sean Lavin), Noir, and CB2. The project was done all at once, which took approximately 10 months from pool design to swim. In the future, they may add an outdoor bathroom, which is something others should consider if embarking on a similar project. Some advice that the Marsden family would give to others thinking about renovating their space would be exploring companies, such as Pristine Acres, who specialize in design so they can architect a unique and customized space. Founder Steve Waldron, VP of Design, Kevin Kurdziolek and their design team created incredible renderings of our background. Their ability to listen and execute the family’s vision is what sets them apart. The family wants to thank all their neighbors who put up with this construction project that lasted several months. Not once did anyone complain about the noise, mud, construction equipment, or the porta-potty and the truck that came to clean it weekly. They are thankful to have such amazing neighbors on Northern Willow Court, LFG NWC! We would love to feature your living space, either indoor or outdoor! Email billie.rose@ strollmag.com!

AGE DEFYING EXCELLENCE The Morelands compete in local Senior Olympics! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER KYLIE GHAEMI THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE ST. JAMES FC VIRGINIA

I had the chance to interview The Morelands! Ken and Karen Moreland live in the Greens and they just went to the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics! The NoVA Senior Olympics happened September 9-24. You had to be 50 years or older to participate. The Morelands did the following sports: Tennis, Bowling, Softball (hit, throw), Football (throw), Frisbee throw (distance and on a straight line), Swimming, Racketball, Minigolf (putt putt), and Pickleball. Ken was injured playing pickleball so they could not continue with the rest of the sports that they had signed up for which were, Golf, 3k Walk, and 5k trail run! All of the sports were separated by men’s and women’s divisions, as well as ages, in groups of 5. They got to play pickleball together as a team.

76

December 2023

The Morelands are motivated by the love of sports. They help coach Kennedy’s (their granddaughter) softball. They love to watch all of their grandkids games! They decided to do sports themselves. It was a lot of fun to meet others their age who love sports too. Ken grew up playing all kinds of sports. He played football, racquetball, tennis, swimming, baseball, and was a lifeguard. He coached baseball and basketball! Karen played softball, and volleyball and coached baseball, football and softball. Ken and Karen met while they played softball together! The Morelands really want other people in the neighborhood to get involved in the Senior Olympics

because it was really fun and they met a lot of nice people. They were inspired by people who were older than them to stay active. They thought this was really cool that they were still doing things like sports! There were other things you can participate in when you do the Senior Olympics if you could not do a certain sport, such as horseshoe, cornhole, mind games, etc. The Morelands would love to spread the word and encourage everyone to take a chance and join the Senior Olympics! Many qualify for State and then National after they participate in local Olympics! They believe in staying healthy and having fun! Do you have a story about athletics, fitness or sports? really cool that I get to perform in this famous show that so many people love, at a place that’s a huge part of our country’s history.” The boys were excited to make their first professional stage debut and have already kicked off their first few weeks of performances. The children’s company began with the first-ever Kid Camp introducing them to the show, before beginning rehearsals with the adult actors. Before rehearsals started in October, William who will be performing the parts of Turkey Boy, Urchin, Boy Scrooge and Ignorance, said, “I’m really excited and nervous at the same time. It’s going to take a lot of hard work, but I’m ready. I love acting and seeing everyone’s reactions 80

when I’m on stage. It makes me happy to be able to entertain people and share a great story about putting kindness and love in front of everything else, especially during the holidays.” “A Christmas Carol” was originally conceived by Michael Baron. This musicinfused production captures the magic and joy of Dickens’s Yuletide classic, with familiar characters, ghosts and a children’s ensemble in the spirit of the holidays. Acclaimed actor Craig Wallace returns to play Ebenezer Scrooge in Ford’s annual tradition heralded as a “rich visual and vocal treat” (TheaterMania ) and “infectiously jolly” (The Washington Post ). They will perform in 27 of the 55 performances. If you’d like to see the boys on stage, reach out to Emily or Doug Morford for their specific show dates. Tickets to “A Christmas Carol” can be purchased on the Ford’s Theatre website at https/fords.org/performance/a-christmascarol-2023/. Performances run from November 17 to December 31, 2023. The production is recommended for ages five and older. Accessible offerings are available, including a sensory-friendly performance, an ASL-interpreted performance and audio-described performances.
