“Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
Hello, Willowsford community,
As we step into March, a month promising renewal and fresh opportunities, I’m reminded of Neil Gaiman’s wisdom: don’t let fear hold you back from what matters, whether it’s art, love, work, family, or life. Imperfection is part of the journey.
At the core of Stroll Willowsford, our commitment to community is unwavering. This March, let’s embrace growth, celebrating the unique tapestry of our community. Your stories shape the evolving narrative, creating a haven we all call home.
A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, some of whom are your neighbors, for their steadfast support. They are the backbone of Stroll Willowsford, enabling us to celebrate the vibrant spirit of our community. Consider supporting these local partners who share our belief in the power of community.
This month, take on new endeavors—forge traditions, connect with loved ones, express gratitude. Let’s revel in growth and find the courage to face the unknown. Whether in art, love, work, family, or life, don’t hesitate. Make mistakes; they lead to a brighter tomorrow and an enduring forever.
With warm regards,

We’re hoping many of you enjoyed the HOA events in January and February; notably the dress up Murder Mystery Dinner Theater at Sycamore House, and the Valentine’s Day dinners at The Lodge. With Winter coming to an end, we’re all looking forward to Springtime.
We’re currently working on how to implement Willowsford’s recently approved Strategic Plan, which was based on extensive resident surveys and interviews. We learned residents perceive that the key attribute establishing Willowsford as the best place to live in Northern Virginia was the connection we share with our farm. We can have fresh, organic vegetables delivered to our homes; and many of our culinary and “date night” events are prepared with items grown on the Farm. This integration of the Farm, our very extensive trail system (both natural and black top), our meadows, lakes, and ponds, combined with the HOA amenities (clubhouses, pools, playgrounds, gym) help make Willowsford such a great place to live.
Laura Tekrony was recently elected as Supervisor for the new Little River District. This district encompasses all of Loudoun’s transition zones, including all of Willowsford. We have started to work with her and her staff on the various new development projects that will impact Willowsford residents — a sports field at Lotus Pond (The Greens), the Dominion Wishing Star substation (The Grange), potential multiple requests for new power line rights-of-way (The Greens, The Grove, The Grange), and others as they may come up.
Frank Blackstone, having served four years on our Board of Directors, is retiring this year. Frank’s wise counsel and insight, as well as his knowledge of local politics, will be sorely missed.
As always, please reach out to your Board of Directors if you have questions or ideas that you would like to share (BOD@willowsfordlife.com).
The Willowsford Operations Team is excited for the upcoming season! In conjunction with our continued partnerships with the Conservancy, Down to Earth Landscaping, and Savatree; we strive to preserve the beauty and sustainability of Willowsford. Through a carefully planned “Maintenance Task List”, we can plan out our tasks to ensure the most efficient, and productive, season. A few methods of sustainability are brush hogging, plant species selection, and irrigation control.
A few specific benefits of brush hogging in the Spring include allowing native grasses to overseed for the next growing season, providing a natural environment for a full year, and providing muchneeded habitat for wildlife.
By selecting plants that are drought-resistant and heattolerant, we can lessen our impact on the environment while also keeping the community’s beauty thriving. Consistent pruning and as-needed treatments will help preserve community and open-space trees. Team Member, John Dudley, is also heading an initiative to gather grants from the Virginia Department of Forestry in an effort to preserve tree canopy coverage throughout Willowsford.
We are also working on adding updated irrigation controller systems that will help monitor water usage through improved rain sensors. This will not only help prevent overwatering, but it will also allow us the capability of controlling the system remotely to quickly remedy any issues.

hile most people have already celebrated the start of a new year, for the Conservancy Team, spring always feels like the dawn of a new beginning. One of the many things that makes Willowsford unique is having access to more than 2,000 acres of open space, trails, and farmland. This incredible opportunity to engage is especially highlighted now when the trails become abundant with migrating birds, the trees start leafing out, and native plants start showing fresh growth. Beyond the trails and open space, the Farm greenhouse is brimming with thousands of plants that are itching to be transplanted into the steadily improving, nutrient-dense soil.
Stepping into spring means more opportunities to engage in programming, events, and volunteer opportunities. From seeding in the greenhouse to learning about native plants to keeping our trails clean by volunteering to pick up trash – our team’s goal is to spend more time sharing our outdoor enthusiasm and knowledge with you, our community.
• New Trail: This summer, you might see our team working on building out the new Pipeline Shortcut trail in The Grant Village. The new path which will cut through the woods and be completed in late 2024. The realignment will prevent disruptions when the pipeline receives upgrades and address the issues of trail flooding by moving the trail off the easement and into the trees.
Get out and explore your Agrihood!
BY MEL DUNHAM“While we enjoy growing exceptional spinach and broccoli, what the Farm team is most excited about is seeing people at the Farm – our definition of Agrihood isn’t complete without our community, and every time you buy a carrot at the Farm Stand, join us for a wagon ride Farm tour, volunteer, or send your kids to camp – then and only then, do we feel like we’re truly an Agrihood.”
—ANDREW DUNHAM,FARM DIRECTOR
• Continued Education: Our team is training to perform prescribed burns in-house. This process will provide significant cost savings for the Conservancy, but - more importantly - it will help combat invasive species and improve our grasslands for better native flora and fauna.
• Native Plants: In 2024, the team is excited to offer a greater variety of native plants to our Willowsford community starting in April. Look for opportunities to purchase and learn more about the benefits of native plants in the Conservancy newsletter.
• Support Your Agrihood Campaign: In late 2023, we launched the “Support Your Agrihood,” all with an aim of personally inviting every member of the Willowsford community to the Farm Table in 2024. There are many upsides to sourcing your food from Willowsford Farm –quality selection you cannot find in the local grocery, a sense of community, and the opportunity to connect with where your food is coming from. Support your Agrihood by purchasing an egg, produce or flower CSA today.
• Soil Health Is Improving: The team made a long-term investment in soil health starting in the spring of 2021. Since then, we’ve seen vast improvement in yields, decreased weed pressure and soil that requires fewer inputs. This wholistic plan to tending to the Earth is accomplished by increased cover crop usage, crop rotation, decreased tillage, incorporating chickens into
“I am most looking forward to seeing how the passion and dedication of our team, partners, and volunteers make an even more significant impact on our conservation goals than we have ever seen.”

the rotation to fertilize the soil and eat weed seed, and by allowing some fields to take a rest for a season, giving the microbial life the opportunity to rejuvenate naturally. While things are just coming out of dormancy, the team is excited to see what this investment will yield in 2024.
• Strategic Plan - Our Agrihood Vision: This spring the team is crafting an implementation plan for our Strategic Plan adopted last year by the Conservancy’s Board of Trustees. This includes longterm facilities planning that aligns with the goal of making Willowsford a world-class Agrihood. These intentional steps will help staff plan for future infrastructure and engagement opportunities. Stay tuned for updates on this very exciting new chapter.

“Jen is an amazing person and some one I am grateful ended up on the same street with me. She cares about others and about doing the right thing. When I’m traveling for work she always offers to help with my daughter. And one of the rarest things about Jen is she is always willing to own and grow for situations and doesn’t place blame. I count her as a good friend and feel fortunate she is in my life.”
—JAMIE PARKERIt’s my pleasure to write about this month’s Notable Neighbor Jennifer Ayers. This neighbor isn’t just any neighbor. She’s my mom! Before relocating here to Virginia, my mom was a television producer in Los Angeles. When we moved here a month before I was born, my mom became a stay-at-home mom. It was a huge and difficult change. These last few years with COVID-19 made things even tougher but through it all my mom stayed strong and kind.
A couple of years ago my mom went to work for an artist and sculptor named Hubert Phipps. She worked with Mr. Phipps to manage and promote his work. Unfortunately, this summer, Mr. Phipps passed away in a tragic accident. My mom continues to work for his estate, placing his art with museums and galleries, and working closely with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to install one of his sculptures in front of their new annex. My mother is extremely hard-working. She puts all she has into her family and job. This is why she is a fantastic mother, daughter, sister, wife, and Notable Neighbor!
“Jen is a genuine, warm, and generous person. Jen’s always eager to lend a helping (and creative) hand, whether it’s coordinating an end-of-school-year party for the kids on the street, making mementos for a neighbor’s baby shower, or hosting movie nights. I’m grateful to not only have Jen as a neighbor, but I’m also thankful to call her a friend.”

“Apple Blossom Auto Boutique was not a company that just began overnight,” recalls Aaron Inabinet, the owner of the mobile car detailer. “For many years, I worked as a detailer for big-name dealerships. Although he enjoyed the job and his career as a detailer, Aaron says he felt his skills and pursuits were “confined within the walls of the dealership.” That’s when he chose to branch off on his own venture so he could offer “customers more of a personalized experience.”
Aaron credits the support from family and friends who stayed the course with him as he planned, adjusted, and built the company from the ground up. “Our company has evolved in greater ways than I could have ever imagined and continues to grow— and for that we are so grateful,” says Aaron.
“We create a personalized detail experience for each and every client”
Satisfied customers have become returning customers who’ve also shared positive reviews about Apple Blossom Auto Boutique within the community. Aaron credits the company’s attention to detail as the key to their success. “Here at Apple Blossom Auto Boutique, we believe that our customers deserve only the finest and most luxurious details and services.” The business provides their own electricity, water, and chemicals, enabling them to provide service to any customer at any time. “We provide full-service details with high quality chemicals, products and tools but are always willing to work with our customers on what services they want to be provided and what they would like used on and in their vehicle,” he further explains.
Aaron and his team take extreme pride in their services and will not finish the job until they believe the service thoroughly meets a customer’s satisfaction. “Although we know perfection is not truly possible, we do constantly strive for it, as we believe our customer’s vehicles are of the utmost importance and deserve the best quality and care.” He says when a client chooses Apple Blossom for the auto detailing, they’ll receive a customized plan. “We create a personalized detail experience for each and every client and our detail services range anywhere from a 4–8-hour process to ensure we are able to truly make your vehicle absolutely spotless and cleaner than when it came fresh from the factory.”
As a company, Apple Blossom is constantly evolving and changing to keep up with the best practices, products and technologies in the vehicle detailing industry while also maintaining their own. “We also offer multiple choices in products to accommodate our customers who prefer tried and true detailing options as well as for those who prefer a clean and free of harsh chemical solutions,” he adds.
Apple Blossom is a company driven by customer satisfaction. Lasting relationships with clients are of utmost importance to the company. Aaron says the company will always make customers aware of any discounts and specials that the company is offering. “Due to our commitment to communication, our customers typically feel
very comfortable speaking with us directly about any questions, concerns, or feedback, however we also have multiple different platforms in which reviews can be left,” he notes.
In addition to their renowned full-service details, Apple Blossom Auto Boutique takes pride in offering exceptional ceramic coating services that have garnered rave reviews from satisfied customers. Certified and professionally trained through SystemX Ceramic Coating, Apple Blossom ensures a top-tier, one-stop-shop experience for all things ceramic coating. Aaron proudly shares, “SystemX Ceramic Coating provides sleek and glossy paint protection with unparalleled ceramic hardness and durability. Customers can choose from different levels of effectiveness, ranging from 3 years to 10+ years of coating. We’re thrilled to partner with SystemX, showcasing our commitment to providing the best ceramic coating in the automotive detailing industry. This partnership reflects our continuous evolution and dedication to delivering the finest services, ensuring our customers’ vehicles receive the utmost care and quality.”

COULD YOU IMAGINE not being able to just grab food from your refrigerator when you’re hungry? Or not be able to buy a school lunch after a long day of learning? When basic necessities like food, water, and shelter aren’t always accessible for some people, their options become scarce. The Junior Writer team got to hear about some of these everyday struggles for some families in our Loudoun County community, and were then presented with an organization that aims to provide a solution. In January, the Junior Writer team met with Allyson Ruscitella, Director of Development with Mobile Hope for a tour on the main campus, a presentation and to lend a helping hand.
Learning how to make a difference locally
Lynn Alexander, DDS
Mobile Hope is a nonprofit organization that provides donations of necessities like food, clothing, guidance, and shelter to those in need without judgment or discrimination. Their hub in Leesburg hosts donation drives and sends out trucks for their program “Listen for the Honk”. This program allows volunteers to drive through neighborhoods and signal for those who requested the organization’s services. Since 2020, Mobile Hope has provided food and basic needs for over 400,000 people. And just last year, they helped 436 homeless youth on their campus. The number of homeless youth in Loudoun is alarming—this year, there are more than 1,100 homeless school aged-kids here—about the population of many of our neighborhood elementary schools. The organization also offers emergency shelter services for people over 18 in situations of homelessness or in need of a place to stay. In return, the teens help organize the donations and volunteer. After learning more about Mobile Hope and ways they could help, the Junior Writer team eagerly rolled up their sleeves and sorted bags and bags of clothing donations to go to those in need or to be resold in their thrift store. It was such an impactful experience, everyone agreed the team should visit and help out again this year!
1 / The team felt empowered when they realized their efforts helped make a difference. 2 / Allyson shows what some kids in our community see when they open their refrigerator at home.
Mobile Hope is an organization willing to support those in need, and will accept donations ranging from old clothes and shoes to canned goods. They also provide impactful volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, service groups, and more, who are looking to lend a helping hand in our community. Step into the enchanting world of Stroll Willowsford’s Annual Middleburg Holiday Shop & Stroll, an unforgettable event that unfolded on December 6, 2023. Thanks to the generous support of The Hill School, Jennifer Liwanag, Pearson Smith Realty, Foxcroft School, Dealux Sprinter, Goodstone Inn & Restaurant, Old Ox Brewery, and the 16 participating Middleburg shops, our community came together for a night filled with festive cheer.
Our heartfelt gratitude extends to The Hill School, Foxcroft School, and Dealux Sprinter for their incredible support in ensuring a seamless experience for residents who opted for the transportation from the Sycamore House and Lodge to Hill, to town, and from Old Ox Brewery. The event kicked off with a warm welcome at Hill School, where
residents were graciously treated to champagne, a wine bar, and delightful hors d’oeuvres—all generously provided by Hill. Headmaster Treavor Lord’s insightful and entertaining remarks set the perfect tone for the evening, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the preevent festivities.

This year, the Holiday Hopper brought an extra dash of fun, allowing attendees to collect stamps and earn additional entries for door prizes at the closing reception later in the evening.
Special thanks to Old Ox Brewery for exclusively opening their doors
for our closing reception. The complimentary drinks from The Hill School, mouthwatering desserts from Goodstone Inn & Restaurant, and thrilling door prizes announced by Hill’s Treavor Lord made it a fitting end to the two-hour shopping spree. Guests left with not just filled shopping bags but also with cherished memories.
As the clock struck 9:30 p.m., guests either hopped back on their buses or headed home on their own. A heartfelt thank you to our loyal guests and the new faces that joined this year, as well as the participating shops—both familiar and new—and our special contributors. Your presence and support turned this into a vibrant community celebration.
The merry affair didn’t just spread joy; it also contributed to a good cause. Ticket proceeds were donated to Seven Loaves Services, supporting the Middleburg food bank’s mission to provide nutritious food to those in need in the surrounding areas.
We encourage all Willowsford residents to explore Middleburg yearround for shopping, dining, activities, events, and more. Let Middleburg become Willowsford’s special hometown!

Middleburg, a town right down the street from Willowsford, is known for stunning parades, wonderful shops, and top-notch horse facilities. Did you know that includes the Equestrian Center at The Salamander Resort? And it’s one of the most popular activities at the resort, whether you are taking riding lessons, or just visiting the horses.
Ashley Farrell is a Willowsford resident and is the Equestrian Manager there. She says, “I started with Salamander in August 2013, part of the team that helped open the resort and launch its programs. Now we are celebrating our 10th anniversary and I have learned so much about the hospitality industry. The merge of a luxury resort and horses has been an exciting and challenging adventure! Running an equestrian center at a 5-star resort is very unique…and lots of fun!”
The stable is popular for all ages, couples, or families and is home to 14 very friendly horses and ponies, all of which love visitors! Each horse has its own information card to teach guests about its breed, size, gender, and history, and has a stall fit to its size. Some of the horses at the barn are retired fox hunters, polo horses, and even Amish draft
horses! But the star of the show is definitely Cupcake. She is a sweetheart and the crowd favorite, with fans driving from all around just to see her! She is a paint color miniature horse who loves to strut her stuff while driving her cart. Or as her social says, #keepingupwithcupcake. And what is better than meeting a horse in the barn? It coming to your room! That’s right folks, the famous Cupcake makes lobby

and room visits to the hotel every Friday and Saturday!
“I love sharing the magic of horses with our guests. Whether it is teaching lessons, giving tours of the beautiful stable, or introducing someone to a horse for the first time my favorite part of what I do every day is showing people how smart, kind, and special horses are. I am so fortunate to have a job that not only lets me give our guests memorable experiences but more importantly gives them the opportunity of learning the important lessons of empathy, compassion, and mindfulness from the horse.” says Ashley.
At the Equestrian Center, guests can choose from Western or English riding. This barn has a wide range of boots and helmets so no worries if you don’t have your own! Staff will even fit you with your correct size. They have lessons for beginners and more experienced riders. The lessons include horsemanship such as leading, grooming, and tacking up your horse. The staff are very helpful with a good attitude. Not only that, but they clean

Additionally, it is the more the merrier at Salamander where resort guests can stable their horse at the Equestrian Center during their stay. Each horse receives 5 star care and can use the arena, trails and facilities. This stable has also created a way for guests to give back to the horses. There are various themed programs held throughout the year. If you want to find a complete listing of activities visit their website https://salamanderresort. com/activities/equestrian. March’s activities are Lucky Horseshoes and an Egg Hunt Riding Lesson. Decorate a horseshoe to bring you good luck all year long, then learn how to groom a pony and saddle up for a short ride. Or, over Eastern weekend have fun dressing up your pony like the Easter Bunny and then search for candy-filled eggs while riding around the arena. One great thing about the Equestrian Center is that you don’t even have to be an overnight guest to enjoy it! “Once the weather warms up, there will be more lessons, trail rides, and hearts and hooves projects for everyone to enjoy!” said Ashley. I highly recommend this wonderful, clean, welcoming barn for all your riding needs!

In a world filled with fast-paced living and constant challenges, maintaining a healthy lifestyle has become a priority for many individuals. Resident Kevin Doughty, a proponent of healthy living, certified nutrition coach, and owner of HITx (Highly Individualized Treatments), shares his valuable insights on why he believes in and celebrates a lifestyle that promotes overall well-being.
Kevin emphasizes the significant impact lifestyle choices have on our health, attributing 90% of diseases to factors such as diet, exercise, and environmental toxins. Contrary to common belief, he highlights that genetics only contribute to 10% of the equation. For him, the key to a long
and healthy life lies in the choices we make daily.
Regular physical activity is a cornerstone of Kevin’s healthy living routine. He engages in both weightlifting and High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), coupled with rest days that involve family walks and outdoor activities. This combination not only keeps him physically fit but also fosters family bonding and appreciation for the outdoors.
When it comes to nutrition, Kevin follows a simple yet effective approach: treat sugar as the enemy and focus on a diet rich in high-protein, whole foods, and low glycemic index carbohydrates. His mantra is straightforward: “If you can’t farm it, raise it, or grow it, it shouldn’t be on your plate.”
Managing a healthy lifestyle while taking care of a family requires discipline and prioritization. Kevin’s advice includes going to bed and waking up early to squeeze in a workout, considering it a small price to pay for a healthier and happier life. He also advocates for maintaining a pantry stocked with healthy food options, eliminating the temptation of unhealthy snacks.
For those looking to embark on a healthy living journey, Kevin offers practical tips: strike a balance by enjoying favorite foods occasionally, limit refined carbs and sugars, prioritize protein, achieve a daily step goal, ensure adequate sleep, and incorporate weightlifting into the routine. According to him, building muscle not only enhances physical appearance but also boosts metabolism, allowing for more flexible dietary choices.
Kevin’s holistic approach extends beyond physical health to encompass mental well-being. He underscores the importance of addressing mental fatigue, stress, and overwork, emphasizing that a healthy mind is essential for a healthy body.
Last Summer we went to Italy with fifteen members of my family including parents, grandparents, great uncles, aunt, uncles and cousins. My family has roots in Italy so it was a very special trip where we could make connections to the places we went. We went to so many different places including Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Rome, Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre, and Venice. I was fascinated by the amount of history we experienced during the trip.
In Pompeii, history was frozen in time when Mount Vesuvius went off and coated the whole city in volcanic ash. Did you know they found seeds from ancient roses that were thought to be extinct? They were able to grow the roses and when I came, they were in bloom!
When we went to Rome I got to go under a church into the catacombs! Rome is made up of many different layers but each layer was above ground at some point in time. There is
A family’s journey through time and flavors!
an underground river running under Rome, I was able to see through a hole under the church!
My favorite place is Venice because I think it’s really cool that instead of roads, Venice has canals. In Venice, they use boats called gondolas to travel around. Every year in February Venice has a festival called Carnevale where people wear beautiful masks and costumes.
We also went to Cinque Terre which is my second favorite place. Beaches in the Cinque Terre are known for their amazing views and clear blue water! But my favorite part of the Cinque Terre is the cats. My cousin and I spent as much time as we could ducking into alleys to find these cats. But be careful when petting them and remember to always wash your hands!
One of the best parts of Italy is the food, we took a cooking class in Florence and got to make pasta and gelato from scratch! Italy was an amazing experience but my mom wants to go back to Italy this summer. If you see her please tell her how much she would love Japan.
Exploring the sweet world of a bee farm in the neighborhood!
BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER CARLEY EMILO THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY LOUDOUN COUNTRY DAY SCHOOLDID YOU KNOW that tucked away in the South Greens of Willowsford, there is an organic, seven-acre farm? Whiskey Teacups Farm is owned and operated by the Riggs family, Bobby, Kym, their children Cambria (16), twins Selah and Hank (13), and their beloved dog Bruce! The Riggs family moved to Willowsford in 2020 and picked out the perfect property to build their custom home and barn. Bobby and Kym knew they wanted a large tract of land for their kids to play, an expansive patio, hydroponic garden, and a fully decked-out barn, for entertaining their neighbors with live music and libations. The concept of Whiskey Teacups Farm was envisioned by Kym, who thought it would be fun to sit in their 100-year-old clawfoot tub that they had acquired and placed outside and drink whiskey out of teacups as they gazed out over their beautiful farm and garden. Their garden grows a lot of vegetables and herbs that they use to make their own delicious hot sauces.
What makes Whiskey Teacups Farm honey unique is their honey is created in small batches, directly from a chosen specific hive, similar to a Bourbon or Whiskey single pick!
Bobby built a giant pen for their chickens, equipped with a chicken obstacle course and roosting area. They have a heated chicken coop with an automatic door to keep the chickens warm and safe at night. The coop was designed to be the “Henitentary” of chicken enclosures so no predators can get in and cause havoc for their beloved chickens Grinch, Big Joe Duck, Dr. Seuss, Edwina, Big Red, and Spaz to name a few. The Grinch is the mother hen of the flock and she is feisty and runs a very tight pecking order over the chickens. They have several different breeds of beautiful chickens like the Barred Rock, Easter Egger, and Well Summer, that have many different colors and even fluffy, feathery feet! Bobby showed us the 10-gallon rainwater collection system and dispenser that he built to collect fresh water for the hens. Because it was so cold out, he had to heat up water inside their house to defrost the water taps for the chickens to drink out of. The Riggs family feeds the chickens organic grain from a 30-pound feeder, dried grubs, and blueberries that the chicken went absolutely nuts for. The chickens also eat leftover produce from the family’s meals, so nothing goes to waste on this farm. The hens lay an egg every 18-24 hours in their chicken nesting boxes in their heated coop. There are fake, wooden eggs to encourage natural egg production in some of the nests. We helped to collect the farm fresh eggs and they are very different colors than the white eggs you buy at the store.
Next up on our exclusive farm tour was the honey! Bobby took us inside the barn to show us the beekeeper essentials needed to produce honey. The most important tool (besides hives) is the J tool. This tool helps to pry open the hive, move the frames around, and scrape the honey from the combs. Bobby graciously gave us a quick lesson on all things bees! Bees create propolis, which is a waxy-like resin that the bees use to build and insulate their hives and make honey. The beehives stay around 95 degrees year round and the propolis plugs any areas of the hive to protect from wind. Rainwater and the bees’ wings, cool the hives in the summertime. On top of the hive is the feeder tray that Bobby fills with sugar water to feed the bees during
the warmer months. The bottom of the hive has an entrance and in the winter, he places fondant bricks (just like in cake frosting) inside to feed the bees during cold snaps. Every hive has a brood box for raising the baby bees and then the upper boxes hold 8 frames each where honey and pollen is stored. The Riggs have 13 hives that house 30,000- 40,000 bees, each of the hives are labeled with a letter. After the

harsh winter months, the bee populations dwindle down to 5,000 bees but the remaining bees get back to work quickly in the Spring to increase their numbers. Every beehive colony has their own queen and the bees can fly 2-3 miles away to collect pollen for the hive. We rode out to the hives in the Riggs’ side-by-side gator to check out their honey production and the hives were pretty quiet during January, bees hibernate in the winter, although sometimes will peek their heads out if temperatures get into the 50’s or higher.
What makes Whiskey Teacups Farm honey unique is their honey is created in small batches, directly from a chosen specific hive, similar to a Bourbon or Whiskey single pick! Bobby got this idea from his good friend and fellow neighbor and Whiskey Teacups Farmhand Eric Ulery. I asked Bobby how do they eat their honey. Bobby said he likes to put honey on tuna fish sandwiches or on grilled fish. Kym and the kids love honey on toast with peanut butter for a tasty breakfast or snack. They also use the honey in their hot sauces. Bobby loves to give local students his bee presentation so that kids can learn about how critical bees are to crop production, the food chain lifecycle, and for the Earth’s overall environmental health. Bobby said his school education visits started when Cambria had Mrs. Fuller for 5th grade (my teacher now!) and he goes in yearly to speak to her classes at Hovatter Elementary. I can’t wait for him to come visit our class to learn more about the bees!
If you would like to buy the Riggs’ honey or hot sauces they have a Shopify website and search for “Whiskey Teacups Farm”.
When you think of a tater tot you might think of something small. But, Tatum is the exact opposite! Tatum is a beautiful-looking dog with colors of brown, tan, and black. Also, her fur pattern is brindle. Tatum lives with Coley, Lizzie, Stevie, and Austin Lewis. She loves to get outside and run around with her brothers, Stevie and Austin, and lounge with them on the weekend.
Here is what her parents have to say about her:
What breed is Tatum?
Tatum is a Mastiff and a Labrador mix, or “Mastador”.
What are her favorite toys?
Tatum loves to play with her tennis ball and her stuffed tiger. She thinks her tiger is her baby!
How would you describe Tatum’s personality?
I would describe Tatum as Calm, playful, and patient. She can be very lazy and loves to lounge too!
If Tatum could talk, what do you think she would say?
I think she would say, “More Treats!” or “This playtime was great, but leave me alone now, kids!”
As you can see, Tatum is an amazing, sweet, and loving dog. She is making Chatham Green Circle a happier place, one big paw at a time.
Neighbors unite to create a dazzling community glow-up for the holidays!
BY RESIDENT AND JUNIORWILLOWSFORD IS A BRIGHT AND MAGICAL COMMUNITY during the winter holidays. My family loves to drive around and see all of the lights and decorations; but I have to admit, my favorite street might be my own loop – Black Willow, Cloverwood and Nut Hatch in the Grove.
Our loop has four traditions that keep growing annually that I would love to share with you. The first, and probably the most popular, are the street tree lights. If you have ever driven through the Grove during the winter you may have noticed the red lights on the bottom trunk and the white lights in the branches; well, I am proud to announce that was started by my neighbor Ben Fiacco who lives on Cloverwood. Mr. Fiacco said when he moved to the neighborhood in 2018 “we began decorating the outside (of our house) with lights. We thought it would be fun for the Willowsford trees to have candy cane lights on the bottom and white lights on the top. As we began decorating them, a few neighbors came over and we started talking about how nice it would look if we all did the Willowsford trees the same way. Our house and a few immediate neighbors all got on board and decorated the trees with the red lights on the bottom and white lights on the top. We put a post
on our street’s Facebook page about a new tradition we were starting and welcomed others to join. That year, a large number of houses on the Cloverwood/Black Willow/Nut Hatch loop joined in decorating their trees. As time went on, families that moved off our street onto other sections of the neighborhood continued the tradition with their new neighbors.”
When this tradition started up, Brittany Intile (a neighbor on Black Willow who encouraged our street to
decorate our trees as well) said, “From there our holiday spirit exploded! Our little cluster of three streets started to have a holiday lights competition that created a festive experience that allowed families to vote on their favorite different categories. When Covid came in 2020 we decided that the traditions could be expanded and encouraged the tree lights and holiday lights competition throughout The Grove!”
Mr. Fiacco added, “It has been really fun to see so many people joining in this tradition and sharing with new families moving in the neighborhood. It really lights up the holidays and brings neighbors together. This tradition continues to grow thanks to so many people sharing in its joy.”
The second tradition our loop does is putting up luminaries on Christmas Eve. I asked Lauren Rahimitabar, the neighbor currently leading this tradition more about it. Mrs. Rahimitabar explained all of the families come to her home on Christmas Eve and fill white paper bags with sand (that they get from Lowe’s or Home Depot) and add a tea light, and of course, there are cookies and hot cocoa, and a fire pit for s’mores going to keep everyone going while they decorate the street! The loop has been glowing on Christmas Eve since 2017! I asked Mrs. Rahimitabar about why she keeps this tradition going and she said “I love it! Coming together as neighbors and making these memories is truly what it’s all about. The kids know the drill now and love helping out too.”
Another tradition we share is on Christmas Eve at 5 PM is all the neighbors stand outside on their front porch and ring
jingle bells together. Michelle Hundley is our neighbor who keeps this ritual up. Mrs. Hundley told me this was “initiated during COVID, in 2020. That was a year we really leaned on our neighbors. Former Black Willow resident, Allison Dossett, thought it would be a great idea to bring everyone ‘together’ if you will in a time of isolation. The sound of the jingle bells is so touching and moving and it’s truly magical for both adults and children. It’s a time for togetherness, and there’s no better way to bring everyone on the street together. The kids and I look forward to it every year!”
The newest, and probably not final, tradition our loop has started is the giant inflatable Santas in every yard! Brittany Intile initiated this fun new element on top of the contest
I mentioned earlier! Mrs. Intile said, “We have so many (people) that enjoy driving through during December to see the lights - let’s level up and add a bit more fun! We were excited to see so many families take the idea and run with it. My husband Tim and I figured go big or go home and found the best 20-foot Santa that made quite the fun addition! Our three streets love bringing joy during the holidays.”
We hope our loop has brought your family some joy during the holidays, that probably sums it up for Black Willow, Cloverwood, and Nut Hatch! Be sure to drive through next year... who knows what else we may add to the festivities!

A few months ago, I went to my friend and neighbor Maura McSorley’s birthday party at ION International Training Center. Maura plays on one of ION’s girls’ hockey teams, the Loudoun Knights, and she wanted to use one of ION’s party rooms and do some ice skating with her friends.
I had such a good time at Maura’s birthday party that I decided to learn to ice skate myself. I joined their Learn To Skate program and got assigned Meagan Sudicky as my teacher. She is a professional figure skater and makes me feel happy to be around. I look forward to going on the ice twice a week, once for lessons and once for open skating with my family. Sometimes we will all eat dinner at Lu’s, ION’s Bar and Grill. My favorite food is their chicken nuggets and fries.
I feel excited to be part of figure skating because I get to do awesome tricks and hang out with awesome and cool people. In such a short time, I already feel stronger, more confident, and less stressed, and have better balance than my brothers. I was hanging out with Meagan and got to interview her and ask her some questions:
What is the most popular program at ION?
The most popular program at ION - depends on who you are asking. Our figure skating, hockey, and curling
programs all have incredibly dedicated skaters and participants who truly make their passion for these ice sports obvious. ION is the proud home rink to elite world-class figure skating teams from around the world with 7 countries represented - and over 36 youth hockey teams including the Little Caps, Knights AA and A travel hockey, Castles house hockey, Mites and our Welcome to Hockey program.
What’s your favorite part of teaching ice skating?
Being able to pass on the wisdom of this sport to the generations to come has
always held the joy of watching skaters achieving their goals. Seeing the smiles of pure happiness and a growing passion for skating will forever always be my favorite!
How long have you been figure skating?
I have spent nearly 36 years on the ice, starting at 2.5 years old in my first Learn to Skate class, and continued to develop and fine-tune my skills and ability competitively until 19 years of age. I skated professionally for numerous well-known companies such as Holiday on Ice, Disney on Ice, and several others prior to becoming a professional skating coach to this day.
What is the highlight of your figure skating career?
Being able to travel the world to 23 countries doing what I love most and experiencing the different cultures along the way is certainly a highlight and memorable.
What’s your favorite figure skating trick?
A spin that seems to last a long time with many changes of positions always will have my attention, especially after seeing all the revolutions completed!
Overall though seeing the grace, strength, and flexibility combined together in a routine with impeccable jumps is rather mesmerizing to watch.
People come from all around for ice skating coaching, why do you think that is?
Skating rinks don’t exist everywhere and not all rinks are equal with talented coaches and skaters, people tend to gravitate towards where the success is and what the facility can provide for their training. When the owners built ION they were very intentional about providing a highlevel facility that meets the needs for skaters of all levels.
Are there any fun plans/upcoming events for ION (think in April/May and beyond)?
Plans are underway for the 2024 ION Event Calendar including the June Ice Show with the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra – stay tuned for more information coming soon. With events planned for ION Arena and Live at Lu’s Bar & Grill, you can expect more live music performances in the year ahead. ONE OF THE BIGGEST FESTIVALS IN INDIAN CULTURE is Diwali, the festival of lights. Diwali is a five-day celebration that occurs every year in October or November and marks the Indian New Year. Diwali also is a celebration of good over evil, or light over darkness. Some of the festivities in Diwali include dressing up, cooking delicious food, fireworks, lighting diyas (or candles), and colorful sand art, which is known as rangoli.
This year, my family hosted our annual Diwali party at our house. We decorated our porch with bright, shimmering lights, we lit candles around the house, hung flowers and garlands, and put up balloons. I chose to interview some of our neighbors for their thoughts on Diwali. Here are their responses:
CAMARA FAMILY:
“Precious - Diwali for us means joy, family and sharing. We do enjoy dressing up and eating too.”
MARTIN FAMILY:
“We are honored that our neighbors include us in their Diwali celebration! Family favorites include the food, dressing up, fireworks, and friends!”
—KAREN
ANDREONI FAMILY:
“Festival of Lights, party at Arpita’s house!”

“The best part is learning about and celebrating someone else’s holiday. I love the colors and getting together with neighbors.”

BRODERICK FAMILY:
“My favorite part is the fireworks and the clothes.”
—PACE
“My favorite part is the colors and the fireworks.”
—OLLIE
“I love the candlelight, the colorful flowers, and dressing in beautiful fine Indian fabrics that are colorful and patterned. It all feels so happy, welcoming, and warm.”

MICHELLE AND FREDDY STOLLE
AND THEIR DAUGHTER HANNAH moved into the Grove in August of 2021, and honor an old tradition of welcoming new neighbors with a homebaked treat.
The move to Virginia was the latest of 6 relocations for the Stolles. Freddy, a California native who graduated from Pepperdine University, has spent the last 14 years with Audi of America, headquartered in Reston. He’s been Sr. Director of Sales for 3 years.
Freddy enjoys golfing with the men’s group at 1757, squeezing in as many tournaments as possible. “He has a zero handicap and is a great instructor if you ever play in his foursome,” Michelle said. “He’s also an expert meat smoker and roasts his own coffee in our garage!”
Hanna loves living near so many school friends and having her bus stop at the front door. She’s a Junior Writer for Stroll, swims with the Willowsford Waves South, and even participated
in the first Willowsford fishing tournament last summer. She still has her first pets—a goldfish that her cousins won at a 2017 fair that survived the move to Virginia, and Pepper, 4, a mini–Australian Labradoodle who joined the family as the Covid quarantine began. Outside the neighborhood, Hanna competes on a gymnastics team, rides at Red Gate, and performs with Acting for Young People. Sometimes Hanna only has time to study at 6 am, but has maintained straight As while taking all Honors classes.
Michelle, a Missouri native and Indiana University alumna, worked at Toyota for 23 years (where she and Freddy met) before resigning to raise their daughter. Michelle now spends more hours in volunteer roles than a full-time job and enjoys Bible Study and Orange Theory workouts. She coordinates gymnastics team events and serves on the WIllowsford Swim Team Board.
The Stolles visit Hawaii every other year. Last year they visited Germany (where Freddy’s Dad is from), and spent their annual family bonding week at a Christian camp in the Adirondacks. They finally got to Rehoboth Beach and Hanna attended her first wedding, in California.
“We love living in a community that decorates their yards for Halloween and Christmas. The Holiday Walks are amazing!”
At holiday time, the “Stolle Elves” deliver dozens of Christmas cookies to their neighbors. “We love living in a community that decorates their yards for Halloween and Christmas,” Michelle said. “The Holiday Walks are amazing!” Another big event is Freddy’s annual BBQ, which he hosts for the 40+ member Audi sales team and where his smoked meats take center stage.
The family’s church home is Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg, and they would like to connect with neighbors who also attend Cornerstone. “Hanna loves the middle school program, and we appreciate Pastor Gary Hamrick’s real-world messages,” Michelle said. Describing themselves as “devoted, adventurous, and caring,” the Stolles are now in their busy season of life. “We have an extremely active daughter who is always on the go and usually volunteers us to host her friend gatherings,” Freddy added. “But we wouldn’t know how to do life any other way.”

The Junior Writers held their annual holiday party at their December meeting at the Willowsford Boathouse. There were tons of amazing activities, tasty treats, and delightful decorations. One of the activities was creating cards for the residents at Morningside House Senior Living. Kids wrote kind notes and stamped Christmas sayings on their cards. Everyone living at Morningside received a holiday card from us!
Another activity was a dessert challenge! Ms. Leah from The Inventive Baker donated all of the sweets and supplies, and showed us how to use piping bags on cupcakes. Each Junior Writer decorated two cupcakes with a holiday theme. Judges selected the most festive cupcakes and the winners got tickets. There was an assortment of fun door prizes, such as a portable speaker, an Instax camera, a tortilla blanket, a Nintendo Switch game and more. The kids dropped their tickets in the buckets that went with the door prizes they wanted most. Tickets were also given out throughout the party during other activities, plus for helping to clean up and answer questions. Every winner was really happy with their prize!
Junior Writers gather to celebrate the season!
BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER EVELYN ROSENext, there was a Secret Santa gift exchange. Then near the end of the party, everyone made ornaments to help decorate the Willowsford Conservancy tree! Strollwriters also enjoyed a delicious dinner from badd pizza. There were also many wonderful treats, including a traditional kransekake by Ms. Leah, and most people came back for seconds for everything. Before everyone left, they received a favor bag that included a Stroll Junior Writer ornament and Stroll cup! Everyone had a great time!
A special thanks goes to resident Keith Hample and badd pizza for the generous donation of a delicious feast of pizza, garlic knots, salad, and more - perfect for a celebration with hungry kids and adult helpers alike! | www.baddpizza.com

The reason why I am so driven to educate and encourage others about light pollution is that I found out how problematic it can be. I did some more research on the topic and found out that light pollution doesn’t get much attention from the public when it is a huge issue as the world is getting more populated. We need to stop wasting and start to understand the importance of light pollution.
Light pollution, many people don’t have a good understanding of what light pollution is but it is really simple. You have probably heard that word before on a book, podcast, or even on TV but do you know what it is? The definition of light pollution is “the brightening of the night sky caused by street lights and other man-made sources, which has a disruptive effect on natural cycles and inhibits the observation of stars and planets.” Many people don’t understand that you are causing light pollution every night by leaving your outside lights on. Just by turning off your front porch lights affects the ecosystem around you.
How does it affect the ecosystem? Well, plants, animals, and humans have all adapted to their circadian rhythm of day to be light and night to be dark. When day is light and night is light it can impact them by basically redoing what they evolved to do for millions of years. Animals such as insects are on a global decline partly thanks to light pollution. Animals don’t see the same way that humans do so this light can seemingly blind them completely. There have been reports of birds crashing into tall buildings and dying because of it. Another way that light pollution hurts us is in our studies up in the sky. Last year at the Astronomy Festival in D.C. on the National Mall they were trying to view the planets. Because of the light pollution in D.C., it caused the glare and brightness to affect the view that they couldn’t spot anything except a

double star. What you can usually see with the naked eye you couldn’t see with a 16-inch telescope.
There are ways to help with light pollution though. Simply installing a timer on your lights or even setting an alarm on your phone to shut them off helps. If everyone were to do that it would help decrease the amount of light pollution in our community. Another way to help out is using yellow light bulbs instead of cool, blue lights. By doing small simple things it makes a huge difference.
