The Board (especially our Treasurer) and Community Manager have been hard at work on the 2024 Budget, and we heartily encourage everyone to attend the November 16th Board Meeting when the Budget will be reviewed and approved. We have also been coordinating with our sister entity, Willowsford Conservancy, with their leadership and Executive Director Sophie Lambert, on their budget process in order to align our missions toward continuing our unique Willowsford experience. We will also be working on winter preparations and tree replacements to keep our community looking its best. As we have mentioned previously, as holiday events bring more activity, we would ask that you report any suspicious activity in the community. As a reminder, the Loudoun County Sheriff non-emergency number is 703-777-1021. If you note any other questionable activity, including in the Lodge Fitness Center, please promptly inform our HOA team as well. We look forward to our holiday Lifestyle programs (including our signature event Winter Wonderland) and our outstanding Culinary events with Chef Emily. Please read the Willowsford Weekly and check the online calendar for all upcoming events. As always, please reach out to any of your resident Board or HOA team members with any ideas or concerns. We look forward to everyone having a great November!

WILLOWSFORD HOA

STREET TREE FAQS BY MATT MURPHY, WILLOWSFORD HOA OPERATIONS MANAGER • PHOTOS BY MAXINE SCHNITZER

22

November 2023

Perhaps you’ve noticed that the streets of Willowsford are beautifully lined along both sides with trees that are, more often than not, located on homeowners’ property. We call these street trees and it seems they can cause quite the confusion. Who planted them and why? Who maintains them? Who replaces them? Well, here are answers to these and other frequently asked questions. What is a street tree and why was it planted on my property?

Street trees are a requirement of Loudoun County and are planted in accordance with the approved County construction plans. Street trees are not permitted within the VDOT Right of Way, line of sight easement, or storm sewer easements. As a result, they often are located farther back from the street and within homeowner property boundaries. Who is responsible for maintaining street trees?

The Association is responsible for maintenance including mulching, pruning, pest control, and weeding of the street trees. Residents should avoid mulching to ensure the trees are not over-mulched What can I do to help my street tree?

While street trees are the Association’s responsibility, there are ways residents can help their street trees thrive. Residents should provide their street tree with water during periods of drought, especially if the street tree has recently been replaced. If street trees are within my property boundary, why am I not responsible?

Street trees are located within an easement that was established for the purpose of maintaining and replacing street trees, sidewalks, and signage. Who plants street trees?

Street trees were planted by the Developer in accordance with the approved County construction plans. Who do I report street tree issues to?

If you have any questions or concerns regarding a street tree, please contact the HOA at HOA@willowsford.com and a work order will be put in place for the issue to be investigated. Who is responsible for replacing dead or dying street trees?

Street trees that need replacement will be replaced by the Association. When are street trees replaced?

Street trees that are determined to be dead or dying, will be replaced in late fall, usually November or early December.

WILLOWSFORD CONSERVANCY

Our Willowsford volunteers made a tremendous impact on our community this year! A thriving agrihood like Willowsford is much more than homes near a farm and a robust trail network - it’s a mission that many of you live in your daily lives and through your valuable volunteer time. Volunteers supported the Willowsford Conservancy by giving their time and helping our Farm Team bag CSA shares, washing eggs, and supporting our conservation efforts through invasive species removal, stream monitoring, or counting blue birds. Our first community Let’s Talk Trash clean-up event this past spring was a success as neighbors worked together to be a great success!Nearly 300 neighbors volunteered and collected enough trash to fill four dumpsters. Volunteers also play a critical role in helping our small team deliver big events like our Annual Earth Day and Campover and Bonfire. All of this adds up to thousands of hours of volunteer support. Additionally, this year we saw: • 500+ hours of CSA Hosting • 250+ hours of egg washing • 250+ hours of produce bagging • 120+ hours of Share packing • Invasives removal & trail maintenance – 100+ hours • Blue bird monitoring – 50+ hours • Deer management – 200+ hours • Stream monitoring – 75+ hours Our staff team and our board thank you! We are so excited to have a new member of our team, Sarah Uhrig, who has a role centered on growing our programs and volunteer engagements – so that you can have a bigger impact and also meet more Willowsford neighbors and community members. There is still time to join our volunteer program this year and in 2024! Volunteers are an excellent resource in many ways for Willowsford by sharing the mission of the Conservancy, and you can learn more about future opportunities on our website, willowsfordconservancy. org or send us an email with any program or volunteering suggestions. We love to hear from you! Stroll Willowsford

NOTABLE NEIGHBOR

HONORING GINGER BROWN THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE VIRGINIA INSTITUTE FOR SURGICAL ARTS

Ginger Brown, a resident of the Grove, beloved wife to Jamie and a nurturing mother to Jimmy, Drew, and Annabel, embodies the essence of what it means to be a Notable Neighbor. Ginger’s day-to-day life revolves around her role as a Norwex sales leader, where she’s committed to promoting health and reducing exposure to harmful chemicals. But her dedication to the well-being of others extends far beyond her professional realm. When she’s not sharing her passion for healthy living, Ginger can often be found hiking with her family, making magical memories during trips to Disney, or visiting family in Buffalo and Ithaca, New York. What truly distinguishes Ginger as a Notable Neighbor is her boundless capacity for kindness and inclusivity. She radiates warmth and extends an open hand to all, ensuring that no one in the neighborhood ever feels like a stranger. Ginger’s innate ability to make people feel valued and welcomed is a testament to her extraordinary character.

“Ginger cares about the local community, whether it’s volunteering at all three schools: Light Ridge, Willard, or Hovatter. She is active not only in our community but also at her church. Ginger cares passionately about saving the environment and safe living too, helping to spread the Norwex cleaning message with her business!” —WHITNEY EMILO

28

November 2023

“When I think of Ginger the first words that come to mind are kind and genuine. When I first moved to the neighborhood she invited me to attend a yoga class with her. I knew within the first few minutes of the class that we would be lifelong friends. She has an energy that just makes you want to be near her. So grateful that we are neighbors.” —COURTNEY BURNETT

“Ginger has the astonishing ability to balance the demands of motherhood, work and personal relationships in a way that leaves most wondering how she does it all. Ginger is a fierce friend, always there to offer guidance and perspective that is genuine and honest. She shares her passion for the environment working towards efforts for clean and sustainable lifestyle choices. She is an excellent example as an active member in her church and volunteer community organizations. In a neighborhood that can sometimes challenge you to ‘keep up’, Ginger offers a grounding reminder of what is truly important in life through her daily actions and involvements. Her ability to prioritize her family and these upstanding values is a joy to watch in action from across the street!” —ELLYN WHITEASH

“Ginger is the best neighbor! She’s the friendliest neighbor on our block, hands down and also the sweetest. She’s inclusive and supportive, and one of the best friends I’ve made since moving to Willowsford.” - BETH STEVENS

Within the community, Ginger is an invaluable contributor. She dedicates her time to volunteering through the Young Men’s Service League, where she actively engages with her oldest son. Her thoughtfulness knows no bounds, as she readily assists neighbors with food and other essentials in their times of need. Ginger’s commitment to community cohesion goes beyond mere gestures of goodwill. She takes it upon herself to get to know each neighbor personally, forging bonds that transform mere acquaintances into genuine friends. Her welcoming spirit has become synonymous with the village itself, a testament to her unwavering commitment to fostering unity. One recent example of Ginger’s selflessness is her involvement in a church service trip to Sneadville, Tennessee with her sons. The experience deeply moved them and they are anxious to go again to lend a helping hand. No one can resist Ginger’s positive attitude! She has successfully converted her entire family into avid Buffalo Bills fans, thanks to her enthusiasm! Ginger is more than just a neighbor; her generous spirit sets an example for all of us. Her nomination as a Notable Neighbor is a well-deserved acknowledgment of her immeasurable contributions and commitment to making the world a better place, one act of kindness at a time. Do you know somebody who consistently puts others before themselves and supports others in need, whether large or small, but often flies under the radar? FAMILY SP OTLIGHT

A NEW CHAPTER FOR

THE FETTERMAN FAMILY BY MARIA SMIETANA PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNY SESSOMS PHOTOGRAPHY THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY CHANTILLY NATIONAL GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB

Now that their first child is off to college, Lori and Trevor Fetterman are slowly heading toward empty nester status.

R

esidents of the Grove since 2016, the Fettermans are parents to Tyler, 18, and Lindsay, 16. The fifth family member is Teddy, a 7-year-old Shichon (shih tzu and bichon frise mix). Tyler graduated from Independence High School this year and is a freshman at East Tennessee State University, where he’s a member of the baseball team. He hasn’t picked a major yet. Lindsay is a junior at Lightridge High School. “One of the things that attracted us to the neighborhood was the pool at the Lodge,” said Lori. “We loved going there when the kids were younger. It was so relaxing, being right next to the lake. They also enjoyed kayaking on the lake and going to the little zip line park. I love that the kids’ friends

always wanted to come to our neighborhood for the amenities. As they have gotten older, we don’t use the amenities aren’t as much although my daughter will still use the gym from time to time. But we still love the beauty of Willowsford. All the trees, especially our tree-lined lot, is one of the best things about living here. We also have met some amazing neighbors.” Originally from New Jersey, Lori met Trevor, a Pennsylvania native, at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. They were both seniors, majoring in management information systems. “We have been together ever since, and celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary in September,” she said.

One of The Fetterman’s oldest family traditions is visiting Bethany Beach. “We have been going there since 2010 for family trips,” Lori said. “We also have enjoyed traveling all over the East Coast going to baseball tournaments over the years to watch Tyler play. One of our favorites is going to St. Petersburg Beach with the Independence high school team over spring break for spring training.” Trevor is also entering his 5th season as one of the varsity baseball coaches for the school. “Our favorite family trip so far was to Hawaii in 2019,” Lori added. “We had the best time. Trevor and I went back earlier this year without the kids, and we’re hoping to go back again soon.” “I used to say that the word which described our family best is ‘busy’,” Trevor said. “For the last 10 years, we felt we were always on the go between work and juggling the kids’ activities and sports. But it has suddenly slowed down a lot now that Tyler is at college. We are still adjusting to the new normal and looking forward to what the future brings for our family.”

WHAT DRIVES US?

REVOLUTIONIZING THE ROAD The world needs Scouts! BY RESIDENTS AND JUNIOR WRITERS ANNA AND EVELYN ROSE THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HILLYARD AUTOMOTIVE

We are talking today with Ryan Rose, Vice President of Scout Motors Inc., headquartered in Tysons, Virginia. (He also happens to be our Dad!) What kind of cars are you making?

The original Scout was produced by International Harvester from 1960 to 1980 and was the world’s first utility vehicle capable of both off-road adventure and family duty. We formed Scout Motors in 2022 to craft all-electric trucks and rugged SUVs rooted in the same tradition that made the original Scout an American icon.

We will honor Scout’s off-road heritage while injecting fresh American ingenuity. When will the cars start being produced?

We are building an all-new manufacturing plant near Columbia, South Carolina, and production is expected to begin by the end of 2026! What is the team like at Scout?

We have a great mix of auto industry veterans, as well as talent from tech start-ups and other industries. We’re hiring for more positions every day!

How do you plan to remake Scouts, and make them electric?

Our vehicles will be built on a newly designed all-electric platform to deliver credible capability and off-road prowess.

MASTERING THE

ART OF AGILITY Practice ninja skills on the new course off Trailhead and Dahlia Manor! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER NOELLE BRINKER THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY NALINI + CO.

Have you ever been sitting at home bored out of your mind? I know I have, and I also know I found the perfect cure for boredom: the new ninja warrior obstacle course in the North Greens at the intersections of Trailhead at the end of Dahlia Manor Place. This new all-wooden structure has so many cool things, from pegs to step on, rings to hang from, and so much more! Something really fun about the course is the Y-shaped balance beam because it’s low enough to the ground that you will catch yourself if you fall, but you can also choose which way you want to go, creating different courses each time. This awesome obstacle course is a full circle so the person can finish where he or she started. There are lots of different ways to use the obstacles so the runner will never run out of ideas. One of my favorite things about this course is the teepee-like structure with wooden pegs to climb around it or go through the center of the tepee. The obstacle course includes nets to climb across to balance beams to master. This is a great activity for anybody who wants to be active and have lots of fun. Next time you’re looking for something to do give the Ninja Warrior course a try, and test your abilities. You won’t be disappointed!

November 2023

Stroll Willowsford’s Friday Family Fun Night was the perfect way to welcome fall: nearly 300 residents gathered at residentowned Cana Vineyards and Winery to celebrate the change in season. Guests mingled in the gorgeous setting with perfect weather that highlighted all of the activities available: children enjoyed lawn games, a petting zoo, painting pumpkins, and custom slushies from Cana, along with soccer activities with FC Virginia. Adults relaxed in the pavilion with a cracking fire, listening to live acoustic music by Brad Emmett while sampling custom-curated Willowsford wine flights. Everyone enjoyed seafood selections from King Street Oyster and complimentary dessert from Floor Coverings International of South Loudoun as the sun set among the twinkling lights and lush grapevines. Proceeds from the evening benefitted The Jackson Walsh Foundation; a neighborhood nonprofit that seeks to raise awareness, resources and funds for Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood. Stay tuned for a upcoming feature to learn more about this residentcreated charity.

“Thank you all for a fun Friday evening, supporting an important charity! We take pride in providing our neighbors a wonderful experience and delicious wine and are grateful for your support. With our desire for continuous improvements, stay tuned for updates on our Black Oak Barn – which we hope to outfit with additional food service in the spring. See you around the winery!”

Helping Dreams Come True

Jen Travis with Marvelous Mouse Travels WRITTEN BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL

G

oing on vacation is exciting but one can easily feel overloaded with all of the planning that comes with it. Say goodbye to the uncertainty and stress of organizing your trips by entrusting Jen Travis from Marvelous Mouse Travels to be your knowledgeable companion, ensuring a seamless and stress-free adventure. “Booking with me is the same price it would be if you were to book on your own,” shares Jen, who is consistently staying up to date on her training to ensure her clients have the best vacation possible. She says her services are “free” and the biggest misconception she hears from potential clients is that they will receive a bill from her. “The truth is, while there are some agencies that charge a planning fee, Marvelous Mouse Travels is not one of them. I get paid commission by the vendors I use to book your vacation through.” Marvelous Mouse Travels has been in business since 2014 and currently has over 250 agents all over the world. Marvelous Mouse Travels comes with a wide variety of designations including being a Diamond Earmarked Disney Producer, a U-Preferred Diamond Agency with Universal Parks and Resorts, Sandals Chairman’s Royal Club, a Preferred Palace Resorts agency and more. “As a member of this agency, I pride myself on planning amazing vacations for my clients and providing exceptional concierge customer service.” Jen operates as a personal “live agent” who can answer and help anytime. Although wholesalers like Costco can potentially offer initial savings, she cautions, they typically do not get involved with correcting issues— costing you in the long run. “Having a travel agent on speed dial is an amazing

48

November 2023

convenience because I can help rectify the problem with little to no impact on your vacation. I have amazing relationships with all the vendors I work with and typically can resolve any issues in short order,” she says confidently. Booking through a third party could mean more headaches for you as you’ll have to take problems into your own hands. Utilizing an experienced (and free) agent, such as Jen with Marvelous Mouse Travels, means you have a trained concierge on speed dial. “When you book a vacation with me you can expect exceptional customer service, expert-level planning services, and direct access to me,” Jen exclaims. “You will never be on hold waiting for someone to answer your call. I am available to my clients both before and during their vacation with any issues or questions they may have. I am a real person that has traveled to these destinations. I not only have the training but also the firsthand experience to ensure you have an amazing vacation.” Jen has the experience and training to book a wide variety of vacations. She can help with Europe, Disney Destinations, cruises, all-inclusive resorts, Universal Orlando and more. “As a member of this agency, I pride myself on planning amazing vacations for my clients and providing exceptional concierge customer service.”

MEMORABLE CLIENT VACATION:

Jen loves planning vacations that have an amazing celebration to go along with it. “After a year of planning, my client recently went to Universal Orlando where he proposed to his girlfriend who is a HUGE Harry Potter fan and had never been to Universal Orlando before. I found a Golden Snitch ring box for him to propose with and then made arrangements for a photographer to take photos of the whole thing while he was there.” Another trip that she has had the pleasure to plan was a babymoon. “My clients were going to Spain and Morocco. They love taking photos, especially professional ones when they are on vacation and had a special request to stay at a desert camp in Marrakech as well as go on a hot air balloon ride,” she shares. “I was able to curate a custom itinerary for them based on a variety of places they wanted to see and get in touch with an amazing photographer based in Marrakech who took some stunning photos that captured this part of their trip! I truly enjoy planning vacations that are also huge milestones in my clients’ lives.”

THINGS TO KNOW

“Traveling is a little more complicated now. You need to have someone on your side whose job it is to monitor all changes, make sure you are aware of applicable protocols, make sure your trip and money is protected and can answer any questions you have,” says Jen. When a Willowsford resident books Jen Travis with Marvelous Mouse Travels they will get a $50 gift card at the time of travel. Just mention Stroll Willowsford! Send us a testimonial about any of our Stroll Willowsford sponsors to billie.rose@n2co.com, or fill out the form here: bit.ly/StrollWFTestimonial. I absolutely understand why permanent jewelry is becoming such a hot trend! My first piece of permanent jewelry is a cross necklace I had the enjoyment of putting together with Lisa and Nils from Glow and Go Permanent Jewelry. This couple is beyond patient and kind to make sure your custom piece is exactly what YOU want it to be. With that said, there is something undeniably captivating about the idea of adorning oneself with jewelry that is meant to be worn for a “lifetime.” Unlike traditional jewelry, which can be easily removed or changed, permanent jewelry is welded together instead of secured with a clasp. It becomes a part of your identity, reflecting your personality and adding a touch of elegance to your overall look.

One of the most exciting aspects of permanent jewelry is the limitless possibilities it offers for creativity and customization. From simple to intricate designs, permanent jewelry allows you to create a truly one-of-a-kind piece that is uniquely yours. Whether you opt for a single

charm/gemstone or a cluster of them, the possibilities for expressing your individuality are endless. It’s also a wonderful way to mark a special occasion or milestone! So, if you’re looking to make a statement and embrace your individuality, permanent jewelry is definitely the way to go.

EDUCATION

PRINCIPAL PERSPECTIVE

An interview with a dedicated dad and leader! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER KATIE ASTUDILLO THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY VILLA MONTESSORI STONE RIDGE

What school do you work at?

I work at Columbia Elementary School in Annandale, VA. What is your position?

I am the proud Principal. How long have you been working in education?

21 years, in a number of roles as a teacher, coach, mentor, and administrator. What is your school mascot?

We are the Columbia Cougars.

What is your number one goal as the Principal at Columbia Elementary?

My goal is to provide each student with the best, most fun, safe, and engaging learning environment possible. What are the challenges of being a Principal?

Currently, the biggest challenge is finding the best teachers to work at Columbia and hopefully make the greatest positive impact on our student’s lives. How do you make good relationships with teachers and parents?

I ask a lot of questions of students, teachers, and families. I listen to them so that I can provide the best level of support that I can. How do you encourage students to challenge themselves at school?

I share stories of lessons I learned when I was a student at Columbia Elementary when I was younger. I work hard to build relationships, communicate clearly, and work with them to help them become the best learners they can be. What makes your school a great place to learn?

It is a small school with a big heart. We have small class sizes, teachers who build strong relationships with students and families, and we are a neighborhood school that has had many generations of families attend and have wonderful academic experiences. What makes Columbia Elementary special to you?

Columbia Elementary is the school that my sister and I attended when growing up. The education we received prepared us to become curious lifelong learners. I hope to create the same memories and experiences for students today!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

INFLOW FEDERAL’S CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC: Teeing up for the ladies! BY RESIDENT CHRISTINE YOUNGQUIST THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY LUX DENTAL CENTER

INflow Federal, a leading provider of technology-enabled solutions for the defense industry, recently demonstrated its commitment to supporting veterans and their families by hosting its inaugural charity golf tournament, “Teeing up for the Ladies,” on September 1st, 2023. The event marked a significant milestone for INflow, showcasing its dedication to giving back to those who have served our nation. All proceeds from the tournament were pledged to Combat Female Veterans Families (CFVF) United, an organization focused on providing crucial support to the families of female veterans. veterans. We believe in the immense value that veterans bring to the workforce, and it is an honor to collaborate with them. The company recognizes the unique challenges that female veterans face, especially in their transition to civilian life. By partnering with CFVF United, INflow aims to make a substantial impact on this vital cause. COMBAT FEMALE VETERANS AND FAMILIES – UNITED (CFVF)

CFVF United is a distinguished veterans organization with a specialized mission - to support combat female veterans. In a military that has become increasingly diverse, the representation of female service members stands at 16%, the highest it has ever been. Furthermore, a much smaller percentage has been involved in combat

operations, reflecting the historical challenges faced by women in accessing combat roles. The journey of female service members in the military has been one of resilience and determination, as they have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with their male counterparts since the Civil War. Founders Sandra Robinson and Michelle Turner, both Combat Veterans, established CFVF United in 2017 with a shared vision of addressing the complex and multi-faceted needs of female service members during their transition to civilian life. They recognize that combat experiences affect women differently, from the prevalence of sexual assaults in deployed settings to the development of PTSD, which often necessitates reconciliation with roles as caregivers, wives, and daughters.

THE IMPACT OF THE EVENT

The “Teeing up for the Ladies” golf tournament was a resounding success, raising a remarkable $10,000 for CFVF United. These funds will directly benefit female service members and veterans in their often prolonged journey back from the battlefield. CFVF United provides tailored transition programs, offering vital support through peer networks, emergency financial assistance, advocacy, and other essential services. INflow Federal’s inaugural charity golf tournament stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to veterans and their families. By partnering with CFVF United, they have made a significant contribution to the lives of female service members, recognizing their unique experiences and challenges. The success of this event not only demonstrates the generosity and compassion of the participants but also serves as a beacon of hope for female veterans as they navigate the path back to civilian life. PRECIOUS PETS

PINT-SIZED PERFECTION The McMillian’s tiny addition is small in size, but big in heart! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER CYDNEY MCMILLIAN THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY MIGHTY CLEAN CARPET CARE

Jett is our 4-month-old puppy. He is a KB black Yorkshire Terrier (this color is very rare). We have been begging my dad for a dog since we moved to Willowsford in 2020! My dad is not a fan of pets, so as you can see, it took years of convincing for him to allow us to get a dog. We got Jett in June of this summer. After being with his mom and breeder for 8 weeks, we were allowed to pick him up and bring him to his forever home. His birthday is May 4, 2023. He weighed just a little more than 1lb back then. It took him some time to warm up to our house with all of us (sometimes we can’t find him!) He just recently learned to climb the steps, so now we all have to remember to close our doors unless we want him sniffing our dirty clothes on the floor. He is now almost 5 lbs. and full of energy! He is very fast and before he goes to bed he runs around in circles. We call this the Zoomies. During Share your pet pics with us! this time, we throw his favorite stuffed animals across the room and Email billie.rose@strollmag.com. he runs to retrieve them over and over again. Me or my mom usually handle his bedtime routine, but, he seems to love our mom the most. She says it’s because she feeds him treats. On the weekends I take care of him the most. I make sure to play with him a lot because I want to be his favorite too! He has lots of toys, but he chooses to play with shoes most often. His top choices are Crocs and sandals, so if your shoes are missing at our house, it’s best to check with Jett first! Now that my brother and I are gone at school during the day my mom says he gets sad sometimes, so when we come home we make sure to greet him with lots of love and energy! We are so happy to finally have him in our family.

As a new build, we moved in to our home in The Grove with the standard white wire shelves in all of our closets. For quite a while I made it work with some creativity but I was definitely frustrated by the lack of easily accessible space and ability for organization and the neatness I had before. When I heard about Closets by Design I booked a consultation right away, anxious to get my closet the way I wanted and needed. What a simple process from start to finish…my ideas, concerns, and needs were all listened to and taken into consideration as the design came together. When I received the plans I knew it was happening and got my closet scheduled. The team who did the installation were on time, vacuumed and cleaned up after themselves, the dust and debris and cleaned the closet so when they were finished all I had to do was move back in! Everything about the project went smoothly from my ideas to suggestions I would never have thought and now know I can’t imagine living without. If you need a closet redo I highly recommend Closets by Design and their professionalism from the first phone conversation to completion.

Green Horizons

Students explore sustainability on an eco trip to Germany and Switzerland!

BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER SYDNEY SHAUGHNESSY • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY FORTIFY CHIROPRACTIC AND SPORTS REHAB

O

ver the span of 10 days my brother, Miles went to Germany and Switzerland on a school trip to learn about sustainable living. Miles went with his teacher, about 15 fellow Willard Middle School classmates, and even some kids from South Carolina who were in the same program. The teacher worked with an educational tour group to plan out their activities, lodging, meals, and transportation. Miles took all kinds of transportation including trains, gondolas, boats, planes, and charter buses. He also got to take a trambus which is like a smaller metro car, it was electric and free! Riders can hop on and it would take you around the city.

70

November 2023

On the trip, they learned about Germany and Switzerland’s sustainability efforts by seeing state-of-theart ideas of renewable energy, urban farming, and eco-tourism. Germany and Switzerland have innovative approaches to technology and energy, recycling, clean energy and farms of the future. In Berlin, they toured Holzmarket 25 (an urban sustainable development project), Euref (an innovative campus to 150 renewable energy startup companies) and the Futurium Museum (hands-on exhibits on sustainability). The trip included some sightseeing of the Soviet War

Memorial, Berlin Wall, Holocaust Memorial and Brandenburg Gate. Next in Freiburg, they had a walking tour to learn about the city’s efforts over the past 30 years to transform to become more sustainable. It showed what is possible if a city is willing to invest in the future! The highlight of Freiburg was a hike in the black forest, which included a boat ride and swimming in a lake. The last two stops were in Switzerland, and it was everyone’s favorite part of the trip. First, they toured the city of Lucerne, toured a Cold War-era bunker, and then rode a gondola to the top of Mount Titisee in the Swiss Alps. They toured a glacier and ice cave and learned about disappearing glaciers. They went even higher, riding a ski lift to walk a sky bridge! Their hotel was on top of the mountain, only accessible by the gondola (which closes at 5 pm) so it was very peaceful at night. Because they went to so many different places everyone got to try many different and new types of food, but Miles’ favorite was a franzbrötchen which is a sweet pastry with cinnamon, chocolate, and powdered sugar. I asked Miles, “If you could revisit Switzerland or Germany would you and why?” and his answer was that although he enjoyed staying in Germany, he would want to revisit Switzerland because he really liked the weather and scenery in Switzerland. A BOOK BONANZA! Junior Writers’ book store experience really hits the plot!

BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER ANNA ROSE THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY BEANTREE LEARNING

The Junior Writers September meeting was held at Birch Tree Bookstore in Leesburg. The building was cozy, and packed with books. There is a nice patio area out back, which is where we had our meeting. Ms. Leah Fallon, the owner, started our meeting by telling us how her bookstore came to be. She used to be a teacher and loved reading! At first, she used plants for decoration but they died, so a friend with a green thumb offered to help. Now, her store sells lots of books, gifts, knickknacks, and pretty plants! Another interesting thing about Birch Tree Bookstore is that they have LOTS of book clubs! Right now, there are 12 to choose from, for all ages and interests! Sometimes, the meetings are even held upstairs in a neighboring yoga studio. To wrap up our meeting, Ms. Leah told us about ARCs, which stands for Advanced Reader Copies. Sometimes, the cover is not decided or pictures are not included. There might even be mistakes still in the book!

72

November 2023

The best part of the meeting was when we played a White Elephant game where we each got an Advanced Reader Copy to keep, given to us by Ms. Leah! The group took a “shelfie” with our new books, and everyone had time to shop before leaving. I recommend visiting Birch Tree Bookstore and exploring all they have to offer!

“Making a decision to shop locally at small businesses does so much to support our economy and to make Loudoun a great place to live. I smile every time someone buys a book from Birch Tree - I know you have other choices and we love it when you choose us.” - LEAH FALLON, OWNER OF BIRCH TREE BOOKSTORE

YOUR SOLUTION FOR A MORE COMFORTABLE HOME THAT IS HEALTHIER AND COSTS LESS TO OWN. Comfenergy and 3 Pros Basement Systems WRITTEN BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL

1

E

ver have a level or room in your home that is too hot or too cold, damp, musty or too stuffy feeling inside of your home? Your house may not be performing as efficiently as it should. If you suspect this is the case and wish to evaluate your home’s comfort or energy efficiency, there’s a reputable company in Sterling that is 2 ready to answer your call. Comfenergy provides comprehensive, top-notch home performance solutions that cater to all your home needs. The company is co-owned by Justin Dobson, and Peter Walther who also operate 3 Pros Basement Systems together. The team starts with a meticulous and thorough whole-home assessment. Every evaluation starts with a questionnaire for the homeowner to determine how they use their home and what issue(s) they’d like to solve. No stone will be left unturned as they inspect every aspect of your property, from the basement and floors to the walls, windows, attic, and insulation. By methodically assessing the design and condition of your home, the team can pinpoint any potential deficiencies that could lead to various problems, such as uncontrolled air flow, poor temperature control, excess humidity, or even basement water problems. Once they identify these issues, clients will be presented with home performance solutions. Each one will be designed specifically to ensure that their recommendations provide tangible benefits to homeowners. By implementing their expert recommendations, you can experience a significant improvement in the overall air quality within your home. Moreover, Comfenergy solutions also work to reduce moisture levels, minimizing the potential for mold growth. Additionally, their services enhance the efficiency of your HVAC systems, leading to both lower energy costs and an 1 / Installation of wall insulation to help reduce noise. 2 / A finished attic with Tru Soft Cellulose extended lifespan of your insulation. 3 / Spray foam insulation for a heated air units. outdoor pool. 4 / Air flow test in action! 5 HOME ENERGY AUDIT

How does a home energy audit work? To start, Comfenergy experts will ask clients what results they’d like to have from working with them. “We use whatever the homeowners tell us as direction to search for potential root causes,” says Co-owner and Founder, Justin Dobson. “Our Contractor Nation Certified Home Performance Experts will use thermal imaging cameras, smoke tests, and a blower door test to check the airflow in a home. They will crawl into a crawl space and visually inspect for poor insulation, water or excessive moisture, rodents, uncontrolled air vents, and sump pump performance.” The same goes for inspecting attics. They do a temperature test, and airflow test, check for poor quality or quality of insulation and inspect the HVAC duct system for leaks or poor airflow. ATTICS AND CRAWL SPACES

The most common problem area that leads to poor home performance is the attic of a home. Comfenergy has advanced methods for correcting attic problems with a product called Tru Soft Cellulose insulation. “There are multiple benefits of Tru Soft Cellulose insulation. It covers more space and can fill into corners, gaps, and cracks where traditional batt rolled insulation cannot,” explains Dobson. Tru Soft Cellulose insulation can easily be added to any attic space and is able to provide a higher R-Value (insulation rating/measurement). Tru Soft is also treated borate which is a human and pet-friendly compound that naturally deters rodents and helps to prevent infestation. “Air sealing an attic is part of nearly every home project that we perform, and it is done with the use of Zyp Foam,” states Walther. Zyp Foam is sprayed into all small cracks, gaps, and light fixture seams where air can travel. Air sealing helps hold conditioned air heated or cooled by the HVAC system in the rooms below and attic, helping to keep those rooms comfortable and with more even temperatures. “This can greatly reduce the amount of time that an HVAC system runs and can lower the energy cost in a home,” Dobson noted. Properly insulating a crawl space can improve the air quality in a home, reducing allergens and mildew. The team focuses on insulating the walls of a crawl space, rather than putting traditional insulation below the floors above. Closing off open-air vents in a crawl space and sealing the rim joists of the home with spray foam insulation helps eliminate the ability for external air and temperature to impact the condition in the crawl space and rooms of the home above.

WATER AND DAMPNESS IN BASEMENTS OR CRAWL SPACE

3 Pros Basement Systems is the area’s go-to for waterproofing and crawl space solutions that work. Having water or uncontrolled moisture within a crawl space or basement can affect an entire home, as it can lead to mold and mildew. “Whenever you have moisture and any “We have the resources organic material, mold can grow,” says and knowledge gained Dobson, noting that by over 30 years half of the air inside of a home originates from working in the crawl the lowest point of a space and basement “A wet basement waterproofing industry” home. or crawl space can therefore lead to poor and unhealthy air being breathed by the people living in a home. A wet crawl space can also lead to wood rot in the 6 subfloor and frame of the home.” The company is supported by Contractor Nation and utilizes over 50 products that are patented and exclusive to their network of dealers. “We have the resources and knowledge gained by over 30 years working in the crawl space and basement waterproofing industry,” says Dobson. “We offer a lifetime, transferable warranty for our home projects and offer annual service plans for our sump pump installations.” Every home could benefit from one of the many products and services provided by Comfenergy and 3 Pros Basement Systems. Whether you believe you have an energy or moisture problem in your home or want to avoid a potential problem down the road, 3 Pros Basement Systems and Comfenergy are your local experts for diagnostic and preventative work. If you haven’t heard, there’s a new Dunkin Donuts near the Grove & Greens that opened in July. It’s at the corner of Braddock & Gum Springs Roads in Chantilly, Virginia. I tried it out and thought it was a lovely restaurant. When you first walk in you are greeted by the very friendly staff. The restaurant location is very convenient with ample parking. The dining area has tables and chairs and everything is extremely clean. There is also a drive-through, which not all Dunkin Donuts have.

This Dunkin had many different food options, breakfast, lunch, snacks, desserts, and lots of drinks. The menu includes things like hashbrowns, croissants, sandwiches, wraps, or bagels. Or you can of course just get donuts or donut holes. They also have many beverages including juice, tea, and coffee. Also, because the building is joined with Baskin Robbins, they also sell ice cream, smoothies, milkshakes, and ice cream cakes, which are great for birthdays. We talked with the manager to get more information about this location. The restaurant is a locally owned franchise, which means the owner paid a fee to open this Dunkin Donuts location. The owner lives in the area, and opened this location because he noticed this area was heavily residential with no breakfast or daytime food options close by and thought it would help the residents. He was right, I visited the restaurant on a weekday afternoon after school and there were two lines – it was busy! I highly recommend supporting this local business. I tried the Mangonata smoothie and shared donut holes with my family – we enjoyed it all. And teenagers if you’re looking for a job, this restaurant is hiring for people aged 16+. Each week, our soccer enthusiasts gather on the pitch and go beyond the pursuit of a ball; we are all about cultivating lasting friendships and fostering a sense of community both on the pitch and during post-game gatherings at the local pub. Reeling in Fun

Willowsford Fishing Derby delights young anglers! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER HANNA STOLLE • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY SOUTH RIDING PEDIATRICS

A note to all fishing lovers. Today I’m here to talk to you about the Willowsford Fishing Derby. It was hosted by Joe Lampert and Bryan Webb. What started as a way to spend an afternoon became a way to test fishing skills, win fun prizes, and have some family fun. Soon after they had the idea they opened it to the public. With 54 kids signed up, they knew this tournament would be a success. Joe Lampert has always been a fishing expert. The most exciting time he ever fished was deep sea fishing in the Florida Keys. At a young age, he started to fish in his neighborhood just like he taught his kids to do. Joe didn’t just stop at sharing his hobby with his kids, Lampert brought something new to our community that families can enjoy.

Now we would like to share a bit more about what this tournament is. It is very organized and family-friendly. The fee was only $10 including pizza at the end. You measure your top 3 longest fish. You can fish at any pond in the neighborhood so it has a lot of different ranges of fish. Or as Joe says, “Each pond is stocked with different types.” It has 3 divisions, so don’t worry about age. Each division has 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place with incredible prizes including a stick-spinning poll for 1st place. The winners for this year’s tournament are: Kindergarten and Below - Bryce Goldbach- 21.5”, Elementary- Nolan Rouser - 56.5”, Middle and High school - Evan Paczek - 62”, and Biggest catch - Vahe Guiragossian - 23”. Those are some big fish ladies and gentlemen! Now for some helpful fishing tips. The biggest fish were caught at Willow Lake with worms and hotdogs. If you go to Pin Oak Pond on the bridge with a worm you will 100% catch a fish. One final thanks to Joe Lampert and Bryan Webb for putting on this amazing tournament and sharing their hobby with us. Be sure to keep an eye out for the next Willowsford Fishing Derby!

Here’s a little more about Vahe Guirgossian, Biggest Catch winner of the Derby. Vahe has a long history in this sport. He started fishing in a creek catching tiny minnows. Now he’s catching 23-inch catfish! At 15 he is ready to start sharing his love of fishing with the younger demographic. So look out for his Fall lessons! If you want to learn to fish, this is your guy! He also has some words of wisdom to share before we end. Vahe agrees that fishing at Willow Lake and Pin Oak Pond provide the best prospects. He wants you to know that the more patient you are, the bigger fish you will catch. For bait he used artificial lures and in his words “Hotdogs with a secret sauce.” Vahe has been titled the neighborhood fishing expert by Joe Lampert himself! Aside from the huge catches and exciting experiences I highly recommend this tournament. No matter what skill level you’re at, or what age you are, fishing is a great way to spend your day. And remember, anyone can fish! Do you have a “Healthy Living” story or event you would for us to feature? Please email billie.rose@strollmag.com!
