own gallery, which still existed at that time, organised the Breathless exhibition together with ‘departure’ in the market halls at Wien Mitte, which then were undergoing renovation. In a vast and somewhat dystopian space occupying several thousand square metres, Adam Budak curated a spectacular cross-media exhibition with artists such as Carola Dertnig, Agnieszka Polska and Alexandre Singh. We felt we expertly served the art scene, and countless visitors stormed the exhibition at its official opening.

Concurrently with the upturn on the gallery scene, the number of outstanding artists represented by Viennese galleries increased, and they were able to make their presence known on the art market. There was a spirit of optimism and, indeed, a sense of ‘departure’, and the collaboration was committed, passionate and amicable.

Ideally, this form of co-operation is the most direct means of promoting artists. They receive financial support and recognition through the sales of their works, without having to worry about funding and subsidies. Dedicated gallery owners make it happen.

I always like to quote the New York critic Jerry Saltz, who said: ‘Gallerists are about my favourite people in the art world. They create their own aesthetic worlds, put money where their taste is, support artists/go broke trying.’

I closed my own gallery in 2017.

Im Idealfall ist diese Art der Zusammenarbeit die wohl direkteste Förderung von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern. Ohne sich um Subventionen kümmern zu müssen, erhalten sie durch Verkäufe finanzielle Unterstützung und Anerkennung. Engagierte Galerist:innen ermöglichen dies.

Immer wieder macht es mir daher große Freude, den New Yorker Kritiker Jerry Saltz zu zitieren: „Gallerists are about my favorite people in the art world. They create their own aesthetic worlds, put money where their taste is, support artists/go broke trying.“ Meine eigene Galerie habe ich 2017 geschlossen.

In terms of monument and history policy, the ‘noughties’ in general and the year 2000 in particular represent a turning point. The unveiling of the Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial on 25 October 2000 marked the end of the search for an official Holocaust memorial that had been underway since the 1980s.1 The start of the year also saw the swearing-in of the first coalition government comprising the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the right-wing populist Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). The return of a right-wing populist party to government promptly gave rise, in short order, to both Thursday demonstrations and artistic protest actions.

With the establishment of the Vienna Fund for Art in the Public Space (KÖR)2 in 2004 the city broke new ground in the promotion of the arts. Alongside the Wiener Festwochen cultural festival and the ‘museum in progress’, there would now be a central institution entrusted with the management and implementation of projects in the public space.

In their book Wem gehört die Stadt? [Who owns the city?], Thomas Edlinger and Anja Lungstrass pinpoint an aetiology specific to Vienna in which art in the public space in the 1960s and 1970s gradually detached itself from the art-in-architecture of the post-war period and, as a result, shifted from wall to street, as it were. As protagonists of this trend, Edlinger mentions architectural firms first and foremost (Haus-Rucker-Co, Coop Himmelb(l)au), alongside the avant-garde movements (Actionism, Situationism), which operated as a sort of ‘expanded architecture’3 .

The selection of works discussed below takes account of the collecting activities of both MUSA and the Wien Museum, especially with regard to ephemeral and performative art preserved in the form of documentary films.

Denkmal- und geschichtspolitisch stellen die 2000er Jahre und insbesondere das Jahr 2000 einen Wendepunkt dar. Mit der Enthüllung des Mahnmals für die österreichischen jüdischen Opfer der Schoah am 25. Oktober 2000 endete eine seit den 1980er Jahren anhaltende Formsuche nach einem offiziellen Holocaustdenkmal.1 Zu Beginn desselben Jahres war die erste Koalition aus ÖVP und FPÖ angelobt worden. Die Rückkehr einer rechtspopulistischen Partei auf die Regierungsbühne führte in kurzer Folge zur Initiierung der Donnerstagsdemos und zu künstlerischen Protestaktionen.

Mit der Gründung des Fonds Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Wien (KÖR)2 im Jahr 2004 geht die Stadt neue Wege in der Kunstförderung.

Fortan gibt es nun neben den Wiener Festwochen und dem museum in progress eine zentrale Institution, die mit der Abwicklung und Umsetzung von Projekten im öffentlichen Raum betraut ist.

In ihrem Buch Wem gehört die Stadt? orten Thomas Edlinger und Anja Lungstraß eine für Wien spezifische Genese, in der sich Kunst im öffentlichen Raum in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren allmählich von der Kunst am Bau der Nachkriegszeit löst und somit gewissermaßen von der Wand auf die Straße wandert. Als Protagonisten dieser Entwicklung nennt Edlinger neben den Avantgarden (Aktionismus, Situationismus) hauptsächlich Architekturbüros (Haus-Rucker-Co, Coop Himmelb(l)au), die im Sinne einer „expanded architecture“3 agierten.

Die im Folgenden besprochene Werkauswahl berücksichtigt die Sammlungstätigkeit des MUSA und des Wien Museums, insbesondere im Hinblick auf ephemere und performative Kunst, die in Form von Dokumentationen erhalten ist.

Protest, Provokation und Skandal Im Rahmen der Wiener Festwochen 2000 machte Christoph Schlingensief mit Bitte liebt Österreich! (Abb. S. 282) Furore. Vor der Staatsoper wurde ein mit FPÖ-Fahnen, dem Logo der Kronen Zeitung und einem Schild mit der Aufschrift „Ausländer raus“ bestückter Container aufgestellt. In der Manier der Fernsehshow Big Brother konnte

Die im Auftrag der Stadt erfolgten Materialproben des Mahnmals sowie Ersatzstücke der „Bücherwände“ sind dem Wien Museum im Jahr 2000 zugekommen. Daneben findet sich eine Reihe an Modellen, Entwürfen, Detailstudien und Probegüssen. Aufschlussreich für den allmählichen Formwerdungsprozess des Mahnmals sind die verschiedenen Betonbeschichtungen und Schriftvarianten.

auf einer Webseite sechs Tage lang über das Schicksal der zwölf Bewohner:innen – von Schauspieler:innen gespielte Asylwerber:innen – abgestimmt werden.4 Vor Ort gab es rund um die Uhr Agitation sowie Auftritte von Künstler:innen, Musiker:innen, Politiker:innen und Intellektuellen.

Spätere politische Kunstaktionen reichten von hochprovokanten Performances, wie Hubsi Kramars Auftritt als Adolf Hitler am Opernball (2000), die mit der Verhaftung des Künstlers endete, über das site-specific theatre der VolxTheaterKarawane5 bis hin zu Gottfried Bechtolds Plakatinstallation Unser Mann (2008). Letzterer lächelte, verkleidet als Politiker, für mehrere Wochen von einem „Wahlplakat“ mit stetig wechselnden Parteilogos. Der ungebrochene Protest der Donnerstagsdemos führte zu einer Vernetzung zwischen Künstler:innen und Aktionist:innen. Handliche Kunstobjekte wie der Widerstandsbutton (2000) von Johanna Kandl und Ingeborg Strobl – ein minimalistisch gestalteter Anstecker – wurden auf den Demos verteilt. Lisl Ponger gestaltete die Postkartenserie Grüße aus

love Austria!] (fig. p. 282). A container decked out with FPÖ flags, the logo of the Kronen Zeitung newspaper and a sign saying: ‘Foreigners out!’ was set up in front of the State Opera House. Over a period of six days, the fate of the container’s twelve residents – asylum seekers played by actors – could be voted on via a website, Big Brother-style.4 On site, there was all manner of round-the-clock agitation and performances by artists, musicians, politicians and intellectuals.

Subsequent political art Aktionen ranged from highly provocative performances such as Hubsi Kramar’s appearance as Adolf Hitler at the Vienna Opera Ball (2000), which ended with the artist’s arrest, to the site-specific theatre of the VolxTheaterKarawane5 and Gott­fried Bechtold’s poster installation Unser Mann (2008). Dressed as a politician, the latter smiled down for several weeks from an ‘election poster’ with continually changing party logos. The unwavering protests staged by the Thursday rallies led to networking between artists and ‘Actionists’. Practical art objects such as the Resistance Button (2000)

Wien (2000), die keine romantischen Stadtansichten, dafür Bilder der Demonstrationen zeigt. Als eine der wenigen staatlich finanzierten Kulturinstitutionen positionierte sich die Secession mit dem Projekt Fassade (2000), in dem unter anderem Milica Tomić das ikonische Foto vom damaligen ÖVP-Bundeskanzler Wolfgang Schüssel und dem FPÖ-Landeshauptmann Jörg Haider im Porsche persiflierte.

Erinnerungskultur und Aufarbeitung Die Entstehungsgeschichte der „Namenlosen Bibliothek“, wie das Mahnmal für die österreichischen jüdischen Opfer der Schoah (2000, Abb. S. 430) zuweilen genannt wird, reicht in das Jahr 1994 zurück, als ein Antragskomitee rund um Simon Wiesenthal den Wiener Bürgermeister Michael Häupl darauf hinwies, dass es die Stadt bis dato versäumt hatte, den über 65.000 österreichischen jüdischen Opfern der Schoah ein würdiges Denkmal zu errichten. Eine internationale Jury unter der Leitung von Hans Hollein entschied sich 1996 für Rachel Whitereads Entwurf.6 Die Einreichung zum Wettbewerb umfasste einige Vorgaben, unter anderem, dass das Mahnmal abstrakt sein sollte.7 Dies muss vor allem in Kontrast zu Alfred Hrdlickas Mahnmal gegen Krieg und Faschismus (1988) gelesen und verstanden werden, das, anfänglich als Antifaschismus-Denkmal geplant, das Leiden aller Kriegsopfer figurativ darstellt und aufgrund seiner vagen Titulierung sowie der Figur und Darstellung des „straßenwaschenden Juden“ heftig umstritten war – und teilweise noch ist.8 2007 dokumentierte Marianne Greber die Performance Cleaning Time (Vienna) – A Shandeh un a Charpeh (Abb. rechts und 198). Ihre Fotos zeigen den Performancekünstler Steven Cohen, wie er auf Knien, in Drag und mit Judenstern mit einer riesigen Zahnbürste den Heldenplatz, den Albertinaplatz und den Judenplatz putzt. Damit bezieht er sich explizit auf die sogenannten Reibpartien, sadistische Akte, die nach dem „Anschluss“ von der Wiener Bevölkerung an den Wiener Juden und Jüdinnen verübt wurden.9 Die Performance, die nicht nur als Kunst im, sondern vor allem als Kunst mit dem öffentlichen Raum verstanden sein wollte, stellte gerade das her, was in Hrdlickas Mahnmal ausgespart ist, nämlich die schaulustige Menge.10 In den 2000er Jahren kam es erstmals zu künstlerischen Kontextualisierungen von Relikten aus der NS-Zeit im Stadtraum. Anstoß gab ein Wandbild von Rudolf Böttger an der Fassade eines Gemeindebaus in Wien-Margareten.11 Das 1938 im Auftrag der Stadt Wien realisierte Terrakottarelief zeigt eine Familie in nationalsozialistischer „Schulbuch-Ästhetik“.12 Das aus einem Wettbewerb hervorgegangene Siegerprojekt Idylle (2002) von Ulrike Lienbacher sah die Anbringung

series Grüsse aus Wien [Greetings from Vienna, 2000], which featured pictures of the protest marches instead of romantic views of the city.

The Secession was one of the few state-funded cultural institutions to take a stand with Project Fassade (2000), with Milica Tomić among others satirizing the iconic photograph of the then ÖVP Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel and the FPÖ provincial governor Jörg Haider seated in a Porsche.

Culture of remembrance and reappraisal The history of the ‘Nameless Library’, as the Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial (2000, fig. p. 430) is sometimes called, goes back to 1994 when a resolution committee set up by Simon Wiesenthal pointed out to the then Mayor of Vienna, Michael Häupl, that the city had thus far failed to erect a worthy memorial to the more than 65,000 Austrian Jewish victims of the Shoah. In 1996 an international jury headed up by Hans Hollein opted in favour of Rachel Whiteread’s design.6 Submissions to the competition tender were required to meet several specifications, among them that the memorial had to be abstract.7 This has to be read and understood above all in contrast to Alfred Hrdlicka’s Memorial against War and Fascism (1988): originally planned as an anti-fascism memorial that figuratively depicted the suffering of all war victims it was – and to some extent still is – hugely

controversial due to its vague title and the depicted figure of the ‘pavement-scrubbing Jew’.8 In 2007 Marianne Greber documented the performance Cleaning Time (Vienna) – A Shandeh un a Charpeh (fig. p. 65 and 198).

Her photos show the performance artist Steven Cohen on his knees scrubbing Heldenplatz, Albertinaplatz and Judenplatz with a huge toothbrush while in drag and wearing the Star of David. He was explicitly referencing the so-called Reibpartien [lit. scrubbing matches], sadistic acts perpetrated by the Viennese population on Vienna’s Jews after the Anschluss.9 The performance, which was intended to be seen not only as art in, but above all as art with the public space, gave rise

einer beschrifteten Glasscheibe vor, wobei die historische Substanz des Reliefs erhalten blieb. Lienbachers Modus zwischen Musealisierung und Kommentar darf als prototypisch für den Umgang mit dieser Art von Relikten betrachtet werden. Die Bestandteile Glassturz und Schrift kamen 2006 auch bei der Kontextualisierung des von Josef Müllner entworfenen, später „nazifizierten“ Siegfriedskopfes (1923) im Arkadenhof der Universität Wien durch Bele Marx und Gilles Mussard zum Einsatz.13 Ebenfalls unter Verwendung von Satzzeichen wurde durch Maria-Theresia Litschauers [transkription] (2009) auf eine Plastik im

Thury-Hof hingewiesen, die etwa um 1939 am Gemeindebau appliziert worden war.

Mit einer Lücke in der Erinnerungskultur befasste sich Iris Andrascheks Kunstprojekt Der Muse reicht’s (Denkmal für die Würdigung der Leistungen von Wissenschaftlerinnen der Universität Wien, 2009). Die in den Steinboden des Arkadenhofes der Universität Wien eingelegte Intarsienarbeit kritisiert das Geschlechterverhältnis der Ehrungspolitik der Uni Wien – eine Frau, 154 Männern. Neben zwei beschrifteten Sockeln besteht die Arbeit aus der Silhouette einer kämpfenden Frauenfigur, die – ausgehend von der Skulptur der stoisch sitzenden Nymphe Kastalia auf dem Brunnen im Arkadenhof – einen langen Schatten wirft.14

to precisely what was missing from Hrdlicka’s memorial, namely the rubbernecking crowd.10 The noughties saw the first artistic contextualisation within the urban space of relics left over from the Nazi era. A mural by Rudolf Böttger on the façade of a municipal housing block in Vienna-Margareten provided the impetus.11 The terracotta relief, commissioned by the City of Vienna in 1938, features a family in Nazi ‘schoolbook aesthetics’.12 Idylle (2002) by Ulrike Lienbacher was the winning project to emerge from a competition: it provided for the installation of an inscribed glass panel, with the historical substance of the relief itself preserved it. Lienbacher’s approach ranging between museumlike staging and commentary can be seen as prototypical for dealing with relics of this nature. Glass case and lettering elements were also used in 2006 for the contextualisation by Bele Marx and Gilles Mussard of the Siegfriedskopf (1923) designed by Josef Müllner and later ‘Nazified’; it is located in the arcaded courtyard of the University of Vienna.13 Maria-Theresia Litschauer also used punctuation marks for her [transcription] (2009), which alluded to a sculpture at the ThuryHof housing complex; it had been affixed to the municipal building around 1939.

Iris Andraschek’s art project Der Muse reicht’s [The Muse Has Had It!] (Monument Honouring the Achievements of Women Scientists at the University of Vienna, 2009) addressed a gap in the culture of remembrance. The inlaid work in the stone-flag floor of the arcaded courtyard of the University of Vienna condemns the gender ratio in the University’s honouring policy: one woman, 154 men. The work consists of two inscribed plinths and the silhouette of a struggling female figure that casts a long shadow, based on the sculpture of the stoically seated nymph Castalia on the courtyard fountain.14

Institutionalisierung & Stadtraum Durch die Gründung von KÖR im Jahr 2004 kam es zu einer Teilprofessionalisierung der städtischen Förderung von Kunst im öffentlichen Raum. Die Anfänge, unter der Leitung von Roland Schöny, dürfen rückblickend als spannungsgeladene sowie dem Experiment nicht abgeneigte Probe- und Probierphase bezeichnet werden. Einerseits machten sich Bestrebungen bemerkbar, die Weiterentwicklung der Kunst am Bau zu fördern. Hierzu zählen die großräumigen Gestaltungen des Dachgartens für die Wienbibliothek im Rathaus (Lois & Franziska Weinberger, 2005, Abb. S. 423), die Raumtexte für die Hauptbücherei Wien (Heinz Gappmayr, 2006, Abb. S. 191) sowie ein Garten (zum Beispiel) von Ingeborg Strobl in der Novaragasse (2008). Andererseits wurde Kunstförderung als Motor des Stadtmarketings entdeckt. Mit verstärktem Schwerpunkt auf Zeitgenössisches sollte nun auch Wien im „Konkurrenzverhältnis der Städte“15 als moderne Metropole am Markt positioniert werden.

Neben neuen Landmarks, wie der 2007 aufgestellten GerngrossSäule von Franz West (Abb. S. 428 und 429), experimentierte KÖR mit temporären Stadtraum-Interventionen. So verwandelte die aufsehenerregende Gerüstskulptur add on. 20 höhenmeter von Peter Fattinger, Veronika Orso und Michael Rieper (2005) den Wallensteinplatz über sechs Wochen in „einen zur Autonomie neigenden urbanen Fremdkörper, der seine eigene Infrastruktur mit einschließt“16 (Abb. S. 66). Mit add on wagte sich KÖR zum ersten Mal über den innerstädtischen Raum hinaus und erprobte ein Vermittlungskonzept für Kunst im öffentlichen Raum. Ein kuratiertes und täglich stattfindendes Abendprogramm begleitete das Stadtexperiment.17 Ein in den Dimensionen vergleichbares Folgeprojekt blieb aus.

Wiederholt wurden Kunstwerke gezielt in Durchgangsräumen wie Fußgänger- und U-Bahn-Passagen eingebettet. Als prominentestes Beispiel hierfür darf das Großprojekt Pi von Ken Lum gelten, das seit 2006 die Westpassage der U-Bahn-Station Karlsplatz auskleidet. Die aus Spiegeln, Schriften und LED-Anzeigen bestehende Medieninstalla-

Institutionalisation & Urban Space The establishment of KÖR as an institution in 2004 resulted in a partial professionalisation of the city’s funding of art in the public space.

Looking back, its beginnings under the stewardship of Roland Schöny can be described as a tension-filled trial-and-error phase that was not averse to experimentation. Efforts to promote the further development of art in architecture were noticeable. They included the large-scale designs for the rooftop gardens of the Vienna Library at City Hall (Lois & Franziska Weinberger, 2005, fig. p. 423) the reading room texts for Vienna’s main library (Heinz Gappmayr, 2006, fig. p. 191) and ein Garten (zum Beispiel) [A garden (for example)] by Ingeborg Strobl on Novaragasse (2008). By the same token, art sponsorship was discovered as a driving force for marketing the city itself. With an even greater focus on contemporary art, Vienna too was to take up its rightful place within the market as a modern metropolis in the ‘competition between cities’15 .

Alongside new landmarks such as the Gerngross Column by Franz West erected in 2007 (fig. p. 428 and 429), KÖR experimented with temporary interventions in the urban space. The eye-catching scaffolding sculpture add on. 20 höhenmeter by Peter Fattinger, Veronika Orso and Michael Rieper (2005) for instance transformed Wallensteinplatz for a period of six weeks into ‘an urban foreign body that tended towards autonomy and incorporated its own infrastructure’16 (fig. p.

66). add on was KÖR’s first attempt at venturing beyond the inner-city urban space as it trialled a mediation concept for art in the public space. The urban experiment was accompanied by a curated and daily evening programme.17 A follow-up project on a similar scale did not materialise. Time and again, artworks were deliberately embedded in areas with a heavy footfall such as pedestrian and subway passageways. The most prominent such example is the large-scale project Pi by Ken Lum, which has lined the west passageway of the Karlsplatz subway station since 2006. The media installation comprising mirrors, scripts and LED displays generates a ‘performative interrelationship’18 with passers-by and confronts them – literally, as they go past – with the abstraction of statistics on global and local events. Lum’s winning project was implemented in collaboration with the Wiener Linien public transport network and in the course of numerous renovation measures implemented at the Karlsplatz ‘art square’, which included the karlsplatz public space (Kunsthalle) and the inclusion of a new police station at Kärntnertorpassage.

The video work Research for sleeping position (2006) by Anna Jermolaewa, among others, illustrates the fact that the public space is at least as contested as its definition (fig. left). Over a period of several hours the artist filmed herself and her vain attempts at finding a comfortable sleeping position on a bench divided up by crossbars at Vienna’s Westbahnhof railway station. The work is also a subtle reference to Jermolaewa’s experience as a displaced person; here it exposes the public space as a place of segregation that uses hostile design to make sleeping on public benches an impossibility.19 Public space, which ideally should be equally and unrestrictedly accessible to all, is usually designed as a commodity and geared towards the needs of consumers.

In the noughties, more and more projects were implemented that frequently made use of such media as script and/or light. This is not particularly surprising as scripts and lights are the language of the public space as urban guidance and signage systems. Of increasing significance for temporary artworks were practical image carriers such as billboards and poster walls, used primarily for advertising. In Delete! Die Entschriftung des öffentlichen Raums (2005), for example, Steinbrener/Dempf covered up all the advertising spaces and business logos on Neubaugasse with bright yellow tarpaulins for a fortnight (fig. p. 69). The two-part work Victory by Leopold Kessler (2008) was a less sensational countermeasure in this regard (fig. p. 70). A photo series documented the act of taking the fingerprint of FPÖ politician Heinz-Christian Strache from an election poster. In Kessler’s ‘unauthor-

tion generiert eine „performative Verschränkung“18 mit Passant:innen und konfrontiert diese – wortwörtlich im Vorbeigehen – mit der Abstraktion statistischer Zähldaten zu globalen und lokalen Vorgängen.

Die Umsetzung von Lums Siegerprojekt entstand in Kooperation mit den Wiener Linien und im Zuge zahlreicher Erneuerungsmaßnahmen am „Kunstplatz“ Karlsplatz; darunter fiel neben dem public space karlsplatz (Kunsthalle) auch die Einrichtung einer neuen Polizeiwache in der Kärntnertorpassage.

Dass der öffentliche Raum mindestens so umkämpft ist wie seine Definition veranschaulicht unter anderem die Videoarbeit Research for sleeping position (2006) von Anna Jermolaewa (Abb. oben).

Die Künstlerin filmte sich über mehrere Stunden beim vergeblichen Versuch, eine Schlafposition auf einer mit Querstreben unterteilten Sitzbank am Wiener Westbahnhof zu finden. Hintergründig erzählt das Werk von Jermolaewas Fluchterfahrung und entlarvt den öffentlichen Raum hier als Ort der Segregation, der mittels Hostile Design das Schlafen auf den Bänken verunmöglicht.19 Öffentlicher Raum, der idealerweise allen Bürger:innen gleichermaßen und uneingeschränkt zugänglich sein sollte, ist in der Regel warenförmig gestaltet und auf die Bedürfnisse von Konsument:innen ausgelegt.

Mit zunehmender Häufigkeit werden in den 2000er Jahren Projekte umgesetzt, welche die Medien Schrift und/oder Licht anwenden. Dies verwundert nicht, bilden doch Schrift und Licht als urbane Leit- und Zeichensysteme die Sprache des öffentlichen Raums. Für temporäre Kunstwerke gewinnen vor allem praktikable Bildträger wie

Billboards und Plakatwände, die vorrangig zum Werben verwendet werden, an Bedeutung. So verhüllten Steinbrener/Dempf (Delete! Die Entschriftung des öffentlichen Raums, 2005, Abb. unten) sämtliche Werbeflächen und Geschäftslogos der Neubaugasse über zwei Wochen mit knallgelben Planen. Eine weniger aufsehenerregende Gegenmaßnahme bezeugt die zweiteilige Arbeit Victory von Leopold Kessler (2008, Abb. S. 70). Eine Fotoserie dokumentiert die Abnahme des Fingerabdrucks des FPÖ-Politikers Heinz-Christian Strache von einem Wahlplakat. Der Wahlspruch „Jetzt geht’s um UNS Österreicher“ und die damit einhergehende nationale Identitätskonstruktion werden in Kesslers „unautorisierter Intervention“ mit polizeilichen Praktiken der Identitätsfeststellung konfrontiert. Der titelgebende „Sieg“ lässt sich schließlich auf den zweiten Teil der Arbeit beziehen, das abgenom­ mene Daktylogramm.

The titular Victory references the second part of the work, namely the resulting fingerprint or ‘dactylograph’.

Initiatives At the initiative of human rights activist Ingrid Popper, Ulrike Truger designed a monolithic memorial for Marcus Omofuma, who was killed by three police officers during his deportation in 1999. In 2002, Truger sited the Marcus Omofuma Stone in front of the Vienna State Opera House and did so without official authorisation. The following year, the City of Vienna officially relocated the monument to the front of the MuseumsQuartier, where it has repeatedly been daubed with racist slogans ever since.

The research group Black Austrian History was founded in 2006 as part of the large-scale project remapping Mozart. Hidden Histories. Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński and Claudia Unterweger temporarily renamed Löwengasse as Josefine-Soliman-Strasse, a reference to the birthplace of the Afro-Austrian human rights campaigner and daughter of Angelo Soliman.

Initiativen Auf Initiative der Menschenrechtsaktivistin Ingrid Popper gestaltete Ulrike Truger ein monolithisches Denkmal für Marcus Omofuma, der 1999 während seiner Abschiebung von drei Polizisten getötet wurde.

2002 platzierte Truger den Marcus-Omofuma-Stein ohne Genehmigung vor der Staatsoper. Im Folgejahr verlegte die Stadt Wien das Denkmal offiziell vor das MuseumsQuartier, wo es seither wiederholt mit rassistischen Parolen beschmiert worden ist.

Leopold Kessler: Victory, 2008 Kesslers Arbeiten zielen immer wieder auf Ordnungssysteme, Kontrollorgane und Überwachungsmethoden. Die vom Künstler so bezeichneten Unauthorized Interventions finden für gewöhnlich im öffentlichen Raum statt, den sie hacken, perforieren oder, allein durch Verschiebung von Zeichen, minimal verändern und in den Brennpunkt rücken.

Unterweger benannten temporär die Löwengasse in Josefine-SolimanStraße um, ein Verweis auf das dort befindliche Geburtshaus der afro-österreichischen Kämpferin für Menschenrechte und Tochter von Angelo Soliman.

Aus der Zeit gefallen scheint hingegen die auf Initiative der Österreichisch-Kubanischen Gesellschaft 2008 im Donaupark aufgestellte Bronzebüste Che Guevaras (Abb. S. 71). Das von Gerda Fassl lebensnah gestaltete Standbild ist bis dato (Stand 2023) das letzte figurative, im Auftrag der Stadt Wien ausgeführte Personendenkmal.

Kurz nach der Enthüllung wurde die Büste demoliert.

2009 eröffnete die Plattform Geschichtspolitik die Diskussion, wie sich die NS-Vergangenheit des Dichters Josef Weinheber zu dessen Würdigung im öffentlichen Raum verhält. Die Streitfrage endete für die ihm zu Ehren 1975 am Schillerplatz aufgestellte Büste mit der permanenten Intervention Weinheber ausgehoben (2019).

Am 9. Dezember 2009, gewissermaßen die 2000er Jahre beschließend, wurde ein Open Call zur Umgestaltung des Lueger-Denkmals in ein Mahnmal gegen Antisemitismus und Rassismus in Österreich lanciert.20 Die von der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien und der Universität Wien getragene Auseinandersetzung führte 2012 zur Umbenennung des Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Rings in Universitätsring und 2018 zur Aufstellung einer Kontextualisierungstafel neben dem Lueger-Denkmal. Aufgrund der 2020 neuerlich aufgenommenen Debatte hat KÖR 2021 einen offiziellen Wettbewerb zur Umgestaltung ausgeschrieben.

Leopold Kessler: Victory, 2008 Kessler’s works regularly take aim at classification systems, regulatory bodies and methods of surveillance. The Unauthorized Interventions, as the artist calls them, usually take place in the public space, which they hack, perforate or modify to a minimal extent simply by shifting characters, thus bringing them into sharper focus.

By contrast, the bronze bust of Che Guevara erected in the Donaupark in 2008 at the initiative of the Austrian-Cuban Society seems a little behind the times (fig. p. 71). The statue, designed true to life by Gerda Fassl, is to date (i.e. as of 2023) the last figurative monument to a person to have been commissioned by the City of Vienna. The bust was demolished shortly after its unveiling.

In 2009, the platform Geschichtspolitik opened up the discussion on how the Nazi past of the poet Josef Weinheber should relate to his honouring in the public space. The contentious issue over the bust erected in his honour on Schillerplatz ended in 1975 with the permanent intervention Weinheber ausgehoben (2019).

On 9 December 2009, and therefore bracketing the noughties as it were, an open call was launched for the redesign of the Lueger Monument into a memorial against antisemitism and racism in Austria.20 The debate supported by the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the University of Vienna led to the renaming of Dr. Karl Lueger Ring as University Ring in 2012 and, in 2018, to the installation of a contextualisation plaque next to the Lueger Monument itself. In 2021, due to the renewed debate triggered in 2020, KÖR announced an official competition for the monument’s complete redesign.
