How do you encourage artists to work more closely together and how do you get audiences to experience artistic fields outside of their regular interests? Marcio da Silva is leading Hastings Philharmonic into the unknown with his bold venture centring on the seemingly unlikely 80th anniversary of the death of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Unlikely that is until one realises how inspiring Atatürk was in his own time and how the arts today could come together far more to inspire and encourage the values of democracy and compassion in the face of constant change. The Challenge of Change will, over four days, draw together a wide range of new works, not only in music but in art and poetry. There will be a greater sense of openness between performers and audience, an encouraged interrelationship which it is hoped will encourage more people to engage with the unfamiliar and hopefully become part of the creative whole not just spectators.

T

eal is a great new lifestyle store in historic Robertsbridge, created by best friends LIzzie and Gillian. The shop is full of stylish must haves for the home. Stunning jewellery, including a bespoke range of English silver made especially for Teal, also ponchoes, scarves and accessories. The fragrance of fig, juniper, ginger and lime greets you as you walk in the door. There is a fabulous selection of cards, French soaps and gifts to choose from. Lizzie and Gillian are keen to bring back the art of shopping, they will eventually have a website (it is the 21st century after all!), but were keen to start with creating an inspirational space where you can get some great ideas. Opening Teal has been a long and difficult road, but Lizzie and Gillian were determined to bring a new shop to add to the already eclectic range of shops and businesses in the village. They both feel that the time is right to bring back personal service with the rise of independent shops as an alternative to the High St and the online offer. Teal is open 6 days per week (closed Sunday), why not make a trip to this great little village and pop in and see Lizzie and Gillian, who would be delighted to see you .

Heathfield Agricultural Show Saturday 25th May Saturday 25th May is the Heathfield & District Agricultural Show This year will be no exception. Known as the premier one day agricultural show in the south east, the Heathfield Show brings an exciting day out for the young and old. Maintaining its strong embedded history of agriculture, the Heathfield Show still has 10 sheep, cattle, pig and horse competition rings being used throughout the morning and early afternoon to ensure there is plenty for all the family to see and do. Heathfield Show has been chosen as a qualifier show for many of the major breed championship events throughout England. Throughout the day events include the grand parade of livestock, the horse show, working steam, our very own Arts & Craft marquee, trade stands selling products ranging from combine harvesters to spinning tops, from tools of the trade to kitchen sieves, including a shopping arcades. With ever changing displays in the main arena, there is also a Flower Show, Poultry and Education areas and not forgetting our New Enterprise Zone showcasing new businesses in the area who have been trading for less than a year. Attractions in the Main arena include the Monster Trucks. Love them or hate them, there is one sure thing. When the Monster Trucks come to the Heathfield Show the visitor numbers increase! At the moment we are collecting together 10 old cars for the Monster Trucks to crush and rip apart during two, 20 minute displays in the Main Ring. The Shetland Pony Grand National is fun on a completely different scale and with the Inter Hunt Relay taking place in Ring 2 there is activity all over the Showground. Battle Medieval Fayre

26th - 27th May

B

attle Medieval Fayre is a two-day family event held on 26 May - 27 May 2019 and is based upon the old idea of a Fayre – somewhere to meet your friends, entertain your family, amuse your children, eat, drink and buy good things! This is the Fayre’s 29th year. It is sited on the high street in front of the world famous Battle Abbey. The fayre has a range of medieval theamed stalls, games and attractions for all ages throughout both days. The entertainment is a mix of juggling, jesting, and general tomfoolery. There will be talks by Hands on History and an opportunity to see and try on mediaeval amour and weaponry. Battle’s very own Knights of the Realm will be strutting their stuff with boo-ing and cheering to encourage them in their chivalrous endeavours. Entry is Free. At 1pm on Monday the May Queen and her entourage (accompanied by the Section 5 Drummers) will process down Battle High Street. After the crowning of the May Queen at about 1.30 the children will demonstrate how maypoling should be done.

THERE IS NO PLANET B

P

alm oil is used in 50% of supermarket products. You may have been rivetted to Sir David Attenborough’s BBC documentary Climate Change: The Facts, as I was. The following products contain no palm oil whatsoever. Be very wary when reading ingredients lists as palm oil is disguised by other names. Be super wary if toiletry products have no ingredients list! All of our products below are 100% natural - a study published in the American Journal of Public Health showed that our largest organ, our skin, absorbs an average 64% total contaminant dosage, some areas of the body 100% - and free from palm oil (and free from many other allergens). They are presented in recyclable glass containers in our bid to reduce plastic waste.

All over multi-purpose moisturising

Bee Pure Face & Body Balm can be used day and night on face, body, hands and feet – it’s a great multi-tasker. As a face moisturiser, it nourishes all skin types, works wonders on chapped dry areas and can reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars. It’s a great massage balm and perfect for all ages and genders.

Especially for heels

Our feet take a pounding and if you suffer with cracked heels, tough skin and dry nails then Bee Heeled will help soften and nourish the skin. The superhero ingredient is antibacterial PROPOLIS, which is blended with enriched organic natural oils to soften and heal dry cracked feet. Massage the balm into your feet every evening before you go to sleep. Expect to see results within a

023_May023.indd 1

week! It can be applied to sore, cracked hands with similar effect. Great for athlete’s foot, builders and gardeners.

Redressing the balance

The above products are made using honey bees in well managed hives. Honey bees compete with wild bees which are in sharp decline. To help redress this balance, if you use honey bee products, you may wish to recreate in your garden, in a small way, some of the species-rich meadows critical to our bee population (Britain has lost a frightening 96% since the 1950’s). These Beebombs are a mix of 18 British native wildflower seeds designated by the Royal Horticultural Society as ‘perfect for pollinators’. Please, no pesticides, particularly near plants when in flower, as they will kill any bees that crawl over the treated areas.

Aches and pains?

These Aches & Pains Bath Salts are made using pink Himalayan crystal salt, which is a raw, unprocessed and unrefined salt, rich in 84 different minerals that the human body needs to stay healthy. Infused with pure coconut oil to leave your skin soft and supple, and a muscle soothing blend of organic eucalyptus, black pepper and sweet marjoram essential oils, to help relieve stress and tension in the body. FINALIST: Beauty Shortlist Wellbeing Awards 2019 - Best Post Workout Bath Soak.

Non-paraffin candles

This all-natural Inner Peace Soy Aromatherapy Candle is made with 100% pure therapeutic essential oils

of bergamot and ylang ylang to bring relaxation, tranquillity and calm. A relaxing aroma, rich with floral and citrus notes. Soy wax is cleaner than other waxes, burns longer, and is free from harmful toxins and chemicals.

Concerns about asbestos in talcum powder

Following media exposure about Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder, you may wish to try a talc-free alternative. This gentle body powder is a pure, all-natural dusting powder that goes on smooth and leaves your skin soft, silky and fresh. Made with a combination of organic arrowroot and corn starch, skin soothing chamomile and lavender essential oils and soft silky bentonite clay, it absorbs moisture whilst also soothing and refreshing even the most sensitive skin.

Liquid Soap

Made in the ancient “castile” tradition using moisturising extra virgin organic olive oil, and gentle enough even for face and baby’s skin, this is unlike any wash we have found so far. Organic, cold processed and vegan, this mandarin and geranium liquid soap was made without heat to retain the nutrients in its oilbased recipe. Leaves skin smooth and hydrated, well after washing. Paula Williams, Founder of BRITISH design BRITISH made, 64 High Street, Battle, TN33 0AG, helping you to buy British. What you buy here will not have arrived from far flung places or travelled thousands of miles by air and sea. We use 100% renewable electricity, every drop made from British sun, wind and rain. We aim to re-use or recycle at least 90% supplier packaging to reduce landfill. We seek out and promote products that are made with sustainable or recycled materials.

The Almonry is a 15th century oak framed grade II* listed building surrounding an internal courtyard with a well. The venue offers the choice of an indoor ceremony in the Council Chamber, which is a beamed room with an inglenook fireplace, or the Arbour which is set in the award winning gardens. The Almonry provides an affordable venue for those wanting an intimate ceremony in a unique setting. The Council Chamber can hold up to 30 guests seated or 50 guests standing. The Arbour accommodates up to 15 guests seated or 20 guests standing, although this can be increased with extra seating on the lawn. Lasting Powers of Attorney – Can You Afford not to? If you lost the ability to manage your own affairs who would you want to manage them for you? The local authority? The medical profession? Or those who know and love you? People lose mental capacity for many reasons, such as a sudden accident or a medical condition such as dementia, sufferers of which currently number more that 850,000 in the UK. With this in mind, ensuring you have Lasting Powers of Attorney in place to give your loved ones the ability to make decisions for you is essential. Many choose to opt only for the Property and Financial Affairs LPA to ensure the money side of things can be managed and omit to arrange the Health and Welfare LPA but is this decision the right one? Wouldn’t you be concerned about where you lived, what you ate, what care and medical treatment you

were given? Without a Health and Welfare LPA, the decisions regarding these crucial issues could be made by Social Services or the local authority and they may even refuse to let the family have a say. Also, the objectives of a local authority may differ greatly from those of your family. They may, for example, wish to keep costs as low as possible and this may dictate the decisions they make. If these decisions resulted in a serious dispute with the family, your loved ones would have to apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship order, a very expensive and lengthy process. Such Health and Welfare orders are rarely granted. With a Health and Welfare LPA in place you will have chosen someone you trust and who knows your wishes to make these decisions for you and to fight your corner if needs be. So when should you put these powers of attorney in place? The short answer is now, while you have mental capacity. You never

know if and when you’re going to lose it - and then it’s too late, leaving a rocky road ahead for your family. Ensure your wishes are carried out by those you love by appointing them as your attorneys. MVL Wills and Trusts of Battle, East Sussex, can help you arrange Lasting Powers of Attorney. A consultation is free and can be held at our offices or in the comfort of your own home. Call 01424 577070 or email info@ mvlwillsandtrusts.co.uk for an appointment.

Systemic Constellation Counselling When people ask me ‘what exactly is a systemic constellation?,’ I always tell them that it’s best experienced first-hand, in the flesh, as it were. However, in an attempt to demystify the process, I want to share my own experiences with this modality and how it has impacted my life, both personally and professionally. Several years ago, I ran aground while writing a play based on my early childhood years. I attended a systemic constellation workshop in the hopes that it would shift my blocks. The outcome of this session was to turn the play into a film script instead, which has now been successfully optioned by a production company. On deeper levels, the workshop introduced me to a new and dynamic way of working. As a longtime counsellor and also counselling client, I have often felt frustrated by ‘talking therapies’ and have sought out experiential, embodied models, where knowledge and insights are absorbed by

the senses, on the pulses rather than in the head. Systemic constellation offers this. In my own life, it has helped me find my rightful place within the collective systems to which I belong. It has taught me a sense of balance in terms of giving and receiving: energetically, spiritually, materially and physically, and to draw on the tremendous resources of my ancestral field. I have worked with individuals facing terminal illnesses, those grappling with divorce, suicide, addictions, and those feeling uncertain about a chosen path. Many have experienced profound shifts and often report that they feel lighter, less weighed down as a result. I offer systemic constellations in a variety of ways: one to one (in person, by phone or WhatsApp), with couples or small groups, and also with our herd of rescue horses on our farm. If you’d like to explore if systemic constellation is for you, please get in touch.

We are open daily from February to mid-December: Tuesday – Friday, 10am – 5pm. Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 11am – 5pm. We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds, particularly children and families. Children can do one of our quiz sheets, try the hands-on exhibits in the Motor Racing Gallery or take part in one of our special themed activities throughout the year. We offer a range of fascinating talks, lectures and walks related to the museum collections throughout the year to adult visitors. There is also a busy education programme for schools. 54th Annual Traction Engine Rally Sat 1st and Sun 2nd June 2019 Since the late 1800’s Claude Jessett’s family lived in Hadlow Down and after Claude married Joyce nearly sixty years ago they spent all their married life in the family home at Tinkers Park. Claude had an interest in all things mechanical and acquired his first traction engine during the Second World War. The engine remains part of the collection, and played no small part in inspiring Claude and Joyce to hold their first steam rally in 1966. Since then there has been an unbroken line in annual Steam Rallies, each one providing a chance to see a fascinating range of exhibits, from the smallest stationary engine driving a water pump, to a huge traction engine designed for ploughing fields. With steam rollers, tractors, cars and motorbikes being just some of the exhibits on show this year’s rally promises to be a wonderful occasion for adults and children alike. The famous Jessett collection of mechanical musical instruments will be in operation, as will the “Great Bush Railway”. Pause to watch the steam engine events while enjoying some hot or cold food along with a pint of Harveys from the beer tent. The Harris family’s traditional fairground has been involved since the first rally and their rides are sure to be a hit with everyone. Then it’s on to the stalls, with all manner of items for sale, from autojumble and tools to books and plants. Right from the start the rally has been in aid of Cancer Research UK and this year is no exception. For more information please visit www.tinkerspark.com - 45 -

For a day out in the Sussex countryside, with plenty to interest children and adults alike, head to Horam Manor Farm on May Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday. It’s free to enter and free to park. Tucked away behind the new Merrydown housing development, and Horam Village hall, only steps from Horam High Street, you’ll find a romantic cluster of barns and old dairy buildings, now studios and workshops, café and riding stables. On show is agricultural machinery from an age when power was provided by horse or human labour. Catch Marco’s traditional Punch and Judy shows, let the children head to the bouncy castle, visit open workshops to see craftsmen at work and maybe try your hand at willow weaving, pottery, print making or paper-making. Browse the stalls and pick up some bargains from the amazing range at Granny’s Attic. Enjoy the BBQ with local produce, and a bar, followed by a walk on the Nature Trails through ancient woodlands and pastures, past streams and Tudor hammer ponds. Motoring A celebration of Sir Jackie Stewart at Goodwood Festival of Speed 4th - 7th July 2019

T

he 2019 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard will feature a doublecelebration of the life and career of Sir Jackie Stewart. This year marks not only 50 years since the legendary Scot won his first F1 title, but also his 80th birthday. he Festival will celebrate both by bringing together a number of Jackie’s most famous racing cars – including the first car he ever raced, a rare Marcos Xylon Special, and the BRM P261 in which he clinched his first Grand Prix victory. “The gathering of the very best road, race and rally cars in the world makes the Festival of Speed one of the great events in our country. This year, I am very proud that The Duke of Richmond has chosen to celebrate the 50th anniversary of my first British Grand Prix win at Silverstone in 1969 and, in the same year, my winning the World Championship for the first time,” said Jackie Stewart. “This June also, almost unbelievably,

celebrates my 80th Birthday. Goodwood have assembled a number of special cars from my career, and I hope to drive as many as I can over the weekend. These include the first car I ever raced, and the BRM in which I won my first Grand Prix. It’s a very special celebration which I thank His Grace for.” Born in Dunbartonshire in 1939, Stewart entered his first race in the Marcos in 1961. He won several races in 1962 including one at Goodwood in a Cooper T49. By 1964 Stewart had been signed by Ecurie Ecosse and early that year he came down to Goodwood after the track manager Robin Mackay had seen him testing and tipped off Ken Tyrrell about the new talent. Stewart attended the test alongside Bruce McLaren in the new Cooper T72-BMC, a car Stewart had never seen before. Despite this he was quicker than McLaren and Ken Tyrrell signed him on the spot to the Formula 3 team. Even with numerous offers from F1 teams,

Stewart opted to stay in Formula 3 and Formula 2 before making his Formula 1 World Championship debut in 1965 for BRM, winning the Italian Grand Prix and finishing the season 3rd. Three World Championships would follow, winning in 1969 for the Ken Tyrrell-run Matra squad, before a brace of titles for Tyrrell Grand Prix in 1971 and 1973. While Stewart is known for his success on track, he is equally synonymous for his work in improving safety in motorsport. Stewart’s safety crusade helped make safety measures such as pit crash barriers, seatbelts and fullface crash helmets mandatory. He is directly responsible for countless lives being saved over the last few decades in motorsport. Tickets for the Festival of Speed are available from ticketing.goodwood.com and from Goodwood Customer Sales on 01243 755 055.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019 Award-winning landscape and garden designer Helen Elks-Smith returns to RHS Chelsea 2019 (2125 May 2019) with her first Main Avenue Show Garden for Warner Edwards Gin. The Warner Edwards Gin Garden, which will be Helen’s second garden at RHS Chelsea and her first on Main Avenue, is inspired by the natural springs at Falls Farm in Northamptonshire – the home of Warner Edwards Gin and Distillery – and has been designed using a sequence

059_May059.indd 1

of structures and techniques to create multiple water features, which run quietly through different areas of the garden creating gentle arcs and streams before they emerge again in the garden. The garden will feature a series of complex drystone walls that form a central pavilion, with two large cantilevered roofs and a central ‘chimney’ where water will flow down through a string of copper ‘fins’, mimicking the internal engineering of “Curiosity” the Warner Edwards’ copper pot still, before disappearing into the ground.

The striking central pavilion, with its floating cantilevered roofs and protruding water rills, will have a distinct linear quality, inspired by the landscape and offering a nod to Frank Lloyd-Wright’s iconic ‘Fallingwater’ where the organic architecture provides a harmonious union between design and nature. Ahead of the pavilion and surrounded by ornamental planting, a sheltered seating area will anchor and balance the design and create a contemplative space or ‘hortus conclusus’ from which to admire the landscape.

A

It is a sad fact that losing a loved one or dear friend at some time in our lives is inevitable, however to have caring, expert help and advice afterwards can be invaluable!

fter losing a loved one, many of us will be experiencing a wide range of feelings from shock to great sadness, and yet at this time you will be called upon to make some very important decisions almost immediately! The arrangements and list of tasks may seem never ending, from collecting and registering the death certificate, choosing undertakers, arranging flowers through to booking venues and menus, as well as of course, informing family and friends it all has to be done. However, this is just the start. Thankfully you no longer have to go through it all alone. Bereavement-PA is a totally bespoke and personal administrative support service, offering you help and advice through this stressful time. The funeral day will come and go leaving few of us prepared for the bewildering amount of red tape and paperwork which will no doubt follow over the coming days and weeks. The lengthy and sometimes heart wrenching task of sorting through old

files stacked with documents from pension providers, insurance companies, banks, building societies, savings, investments, councils, service providers; gas, electric, water, and much more, even down to the DVLA! You will need to liaise directly with each and every one of these organisations swiftly to avoid future problems. The Bereavement-PA team will do all of this for you, sympathetically and efficiently making all the essential notifications and changes where necessary to ensure your peace of mind, and avoid unwanted communications addressed to the deceased. We will ensure all the registrations are made in the correct names and deal with all the correspondence on your behalf. Here at Bereavement-PA we will be able to help you at any stage of your bereavement. We are a unique and genuinely caring, confidential service, developed by those with personal experience and expertise in the many areas associated with bereavement.

PA stands for ‘Personal Assistance’ which is exactly what we will provide you with when you contact us. It is easy to work with Bereavement-PA as you can choose exactly what you would like us to help you with, and at what stage, we go through everything with you. We can also help you to plan ahead and give advice if you are expecting a bereavement in the near future. This ensures that arrangements are in place prior to the passing of a loved one, which provides reassurance that at least some of the necessary responsibilities and administration will already have been prepared and taken care of. Looking to the future when Probate or Grant of Representation is available, we can also advise and help you with properties, including clearance, letting and sales. Bereavement PA keeps your information totally confidential and works tirelessly to ensure that your bereavement experience is as stress free as possible.

We can’t take away your sadness, but we can at least take away some of the stress.

Dying Matters Week 2019

Dementia Action Week 2019

This annual week has the aim of raising awareness of and conversation around death, dying and bereavement and getting it on the national agenda. This year it runs from the 13th to the 19th May and has the theme ‘Are we ready?’.

Dementia Action Week (20 - 26 May 2019) unites people, workplaces, schools and communities to take action and improve the lives of people living with dementia. Almost all of us know someone affected by dementia. But too many people living with dementia report feeling cut off from their community, losing their friendships and facing dementia alone. Having dementia shouldn’t mean an isolated life. And it doesn’t have to. Simple actions from us all can create supportive communities - where people living with the condition can continue to socialise with others, hop on the bus, go to their favourite shops or take part in local activities for as long as possible. We all have a role to play in making the UK a dementiafriendly place to live and that’s what Dementia Action Week is all about. Find a Dementia Action Week event near you

This question can be applied in different ways: are we ready for our own deaths, or the deaths of those we care about? Do we have a will, a funeral plan or an advance care directive? And for some, it’s an emotional, even spiritual question. Many won’t have taken care of the practical aspects, which include organ donation and planning future care. And even for those who have, the emotional aspect is still challenging - who is ever really ready? Such questions are best faced with the help of others and during the week many charities, companies and organisations will be laying on events to help you with all aspects of ‘Are we ready?’. Find out more at dyingmatters. org/AwarenessWeek.

www.alzheimers.org.uk/get-involved/dementia-action-week

St Wilfrid’s Hospice will have a presence at its shops, asking what you would love to do before you die and signposting practical help and advice. During the week, it will also launch its new Sussex-wide service for bereaved children and young people, The Seahorse Project. And, if you don’t have a will in place yet, local solicitors will create or amend existing wills during St Wilfrid’s Free Wills Month in June, in return for a gift or donation to the hospice. Find out more at stwhospice.org.

lan Gannon and his family have been working in and around the funeral industry locally for some years. Alan saw an opportunity to start his own independent family run funeral directors in the local area, after seeing the amount of families who struggled to meet the ever rising costs of a funeral (currently averaging approximately £4469 in the South East). Alan says “ Its not about how much you spend on a funeral, its about the people who are involved” Alan prides himself on being the only person you will be dealing with at every stage of the arrangement, and contactable whenever you need him “Some families need more time than others, having my own funeral directors means I can give as much time, and care to each family as required” For Alan the importance of being able to deliver a funeral at an affordable cost without compromising on quality or professionalism is key “I have created a funeral package which is affordable to everyone, however if you wish to add to it you can”

Alan Gannon & Sons also offer direct Cremations Direct cremations have always been around but are now increasing in popularity due to its simplicity and cost. This is aided with celebrities such as david bowie and author Anita Brooker opting for this. A direct cremation is where a deceased is transported from the mortuary directly to the crematorium within a few days following the death. It is a minimalist option, whereby there are no attendance, procession, or ceremony. A direct cremation should not be considered a ‘Cheap Funeral’, simply it removes the constraints and stress of making prompt formal decisions. This then allows families to arrange more fitting memorial service or reception at a time, and place more suited for all to attend, if desired. Alan Gannon & Sons believe in compassion, a personal service and putting families first. Alan says “I’m in a position of trust when families are at their most vulnerable. Something I hold with high regard, I cannot let them down”.
