Domestic Abuse sometimes but not always leaves bruises
One of the most awful situations we can find ourselves in is living with an abuser in a relationship that is supposed to be a loving one. Abusers can be hard to recognise initially. In Parliament recently, Rosie Duffield MP explained how they win our hearts; “It starts slowly, a few emotional knocks, alternated with romantic gushes and promises of everlasting love, so you are left reeling, confused, spinning around, in an everchanging but always hyper-alert state, not knowing what mood or message awaits you.” Home-Start East Sussex understands that even after breaking free, victim-survivors can suffer from: • Post-traumatic stress disorder, including flashbacks, nightmares, and uncontrollable thoughts • Depression/anxiety • Low self-esteem • Suicidal thoughts • Alcohol/drug abuse • A lack of trust in own judgement regarding new relationships and parenting ability. That’s why Home-Start East Sussex has developed the Lotus Domestic Abuse Recovery Programme, a 6-weekly group for women who are now safe but have historically experienced domestic abuse. The groups are run in safe community locations. Our aim is to support women to understand their experience and develop their confidence so they can feel safe in future relationships. ool is an all-natural fibre grown on sheep. Sheep are part of the natural carbon cycle, consuming organic carbon stored in pasture which has converted CO2 from the atmosphere into organic compounds via photosynthesis (underpins most life on earth), and converting it to wool. So, when you purchase a wool garment, you are purchasing carbon stored from the atmosphere 1-2 years earlier. By comparison, the carbon in major synthetic clothing fibres e.g. polyester, acrylic, is extracted from fossil fuels (carbon stored millions of years ago). The loss of fibres from synthetic textiles during washing, and their persistence in aquatic ecosystems, is an area of major concern. Wool’s natural properties support less frequent, lower impact washing and its fibres do not accumulate in the environment but breakdown naturally into harmless compounds. If ingested, they are unlikely to persist and cause harm in organisms because wool is essentially protein. Due to wool fibre’s durability, wool garments are inherently suitable for re-use and recycling. Mechanical recycling of wool knitwear yields fibres of sufficient length to be carded and re-spun into yarns of pure wool or blends for converting back into knitwear (closed loop recycling – the ideal recycling path). The average life of a wool garment is 2-10 years depending on use, compared to 2-3 years for a typical cotton or synthetic garment. Finally, at the end of its life, wool easily decomposes, releasing its valuable nutrients into the soil in a relatively short period, unlike synthetics. Tests show that in ideal conditions, wool products are almost completely degraded after 6 months in the ground whilst synthetic clothing can take 30-40 years contributing to the ever-increasing piles of landfill waste. In the UK alone, around 350,000 tonnes of used clothing go to landfill every year. Wool is the obvious choice for anyone concerned about the health of our planet.

THE PLOUGH INN CROWHURST
he Plough Inn at Crowhurst, Nr Battle definitely has a community feel. This traditional village pub has open fires and a layout which offers seperate cozy areas, perfect for slowly sipping a drink with your favorite people. Owners Phil and Paul have great experience in the trade having previously run their own venue in Brighton and are now looking to establish themselves in a less frantic area of Sussex. They offer a wide selection of drafts beers, outstanding food and a local friendly atmosphere. With our dinner reservation made, Paul welcomed us and having enquired about our prefered tastes, reccommended a bottle of Turtle Bay, New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc. We were pleased with both the extensive menu and the wide range of specials. There
was even a seperate blackboard pie menu! Phil was very efficient, attentive and helpful, especially helping us choose from the menu as we were certainly spoiled for choice. The cuisines are varied, with many corners of the world represented. From Romney Marsh, Lambs Liver, served with mash, Saute Potatoes and crispy bacon to homemade chicken Korma with spiced rice, Poppadoms, Naan bread and Mango Chutney. There was a vegetarian Thai Red Curry with lemon and spring onion rice and a hot and cold sharing Mezza platter. For our starter we selected homemade potted chicken liver pate, served with spiced onion and tomato chutney and bread. The spicyness of the chutney perfectly complimented the smoothness of the pate and Paul was happy to provide
extra toast if we required more. For our other starter we chose Saute Wild Mushrooms with Cream, Thyme and Garlic served on a toasted herb croute, deliciously creamy and amazingly tasty. For the main course we selected homemade baked Bass Fishcakes with poached egg along with Chicken, Leek and Ham pie served with fresh vegetables and chips. There was a range of tempting desserts and we both selected the homemade Apple and Blackberry Crumble, choosing one with custard and one with ice cream. An ideal and warming dessert for the season. All dishes were beautifully presented and tasted just as good. We will definitely be back and recommend to others. What’s On Editor.

These are 2019’s very worthy winners, including Stormzy, Greta Thunberg, Richard Madden and plenty more. All pictures by What’s On Magazine Editor’s Special Award: David Beckham For his ongoing projects in fashion, football and philanthropy, we commend the player who changed the game for everyone. Beats By Dr Dre Band: The 1975 With a No1 album and major festival slots, Matty Healy and co proved the four-piece are as relevant as ever. A Festival Of Christmas Past This year sees the Rye Christmas Festival turn 5! For five years now, Rye has been host to this most magnificent event organised by local volunteers. This year is set to be better than ever and sees the return of the original theme, Dickensian, a Victorian Christmas. One that suits Rye and it’s cobbled streets and olde worlde appearance to a t. On Saturday 7th December the streets will be alive with musicians, entertainers, games, fair rides and much more. Pantomimes, grottos and story-telling can be found in places of shelter from the cold. Take a ride around the town on a horse and cart where a high street closed to cars is sure to bring with it a sense of times gone by. A vibrant and magical procession will walk the streets later in the day and a sing-a-long carol concert at St Mary’s Church will be a finale full of Christmas spirit and good cheer. This year, to cater to growing demand, the committee have organised certain things to run on the Sunday as well. This includes the grotto, pantomime, Elf Training Academy and Craft workshops. Southern Cross Travel celebrates 15 years in Rye!
his year marks a celebration of 15 years since Southern Cross Travel opened their Rye shop at 77a The Mint. As Rye’s only independent travel agency, the team at Southern Cross Travel have spent those years creating bespoke holidays for all types of travellers, as well as building friendships and relationships with new and existing customers. The trips and destinations we have booked since opening are diverse and varied; from a large group hiking the Inca Trail to a couple relaxing on the beach in the Caribbean; from a city break in Rome to a personalised tour of Japan for a family of 3; from a luxury rail journey across Australia to a 6 week self-drive holiday around New Zealand with hotels and sightseeing included. Each holiday we plan is so interesting and exciting for us – we love a challenge! As well as planning fantastic holidays, all our clients receive full aftercare from us – prior to, and during, their travels. We have been on hand to help when driving licenses required for car hire in Australia have been left behind in the UK, family have needed to be flown out in emergency health situations, and passports have been lost on fishing trips in Alaska (!). We offer a personal service, caring for each of our clients as an individual and we are always at the end of the phone to offer help and advice (even in the early hours on our emergency phone). Southern Cross Travel was established in Sydney, Australia in 1984 by Penny and Trevor Bones, who have a long involvement with travel to, and within Australia, New Zealand and the Far East. As specialists in tailor-made itineraries, we thrive on the opportunity to create a holiday that suits each individuals’ interests, ensuring you have a holiday which is designed around you, and not pulled straight out of a brochure. We use our combined knowledge of destinations - with Specialists in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa - and years of experience to create the perfect holiday. In light of the recent sad collapse of Thomas Cook, there is really no better time to be booking your holidays with a travel agent for maximum protection and peace of mind. As members of the Travel Trust Association, Southern Cross Travel provides 100% financial protection on all our bookings. All our package holidays and flight only bookings include ATOL protection.
If you are yet to book your holiday for this year or next, we will be delighted to arrange this, whether long-haul, short-haul, cruise, beach or city break anywhere in the world. We do hope you will pop in and see us to say hello and run your next holiday idea past us. Feel free to visit us in our Rye office at 77a The Mint, or at The Old Library in on Wadhurst High Street. Alternatively, you can call us – 01797 229200 (Rye) or 01892 783896 (Wadhurst) – visit our website – www.southerncrosstravel.co.uk – or email us on firstname.lastname@example.org

An Introduction to Resin Bound surfacing When it used to come to re-surfacing your driveway the first thought was always Tarmac or Block paving. Both systems can look tired quite quickly. Have you heard of or seen the surface ‘Resin Bound’? It is a smart new way to revitalise your driveway, path or patio and is a striking improvement on other older surfaces like block paving. Enviro-Tech Resin Systems Ltd is a local family run business, which have been installing ‘Resin Bound’ for over 10 years and have been asked to install in many prestigious places over the years, including The Royal Botanical Gardens @ Kew. Both Owners of EnviroTech have been in the Resin industry for over 20 years and their knowledge on the subject is second to none.

Peasmarsh Place Residential Care - maintaining your independence.
s we all get older, we seek to maintain our independence for as long as possible, but sometimes need extra help with the day to day tasks that let us enjoy life to the full. Moving to a care home setting can be a daunting yet sometimes necessary big step. Peasmarsh Place Nr Rye, makes that step as easy as possible by providing luxurious rooms in a period Manor House setting surrounded by
glorious gardens and with staff to meet your every need. Tea on the terrace and meals in our well appointed dining room are a part of every day life. Your safety and well-being are the key outcomes for our trained and qualified staff team, who truly are the most caring professionals we know. Our Chef ensures that everyone has wonderful home cooked meals, whilst there is always an interesting activity or discussion going on to keep you
lan Gannon and his family have been working in and around the funeral industry locally for some years. Alan saw an opportunity to start his own independent family run funeral directors in the local area, after seeing the amount of families who struggled to meet the ever rising costs of a funeral (currently averaging approximately £4469 in the South East). Alan says “ Its not about how much you spend on a funeral, its about the people who are involved” Alan prides himself on being the only person you will be dealing with at every stage of the arrangement, and contactable whenever you need him “Some families need more time than others, having my own funeral directors means I can give as much time, and care to each family as required” For Alan the importance of being able to deliver a funeral at an affordable cost without compromising on quality or professionalism is key “I have created a funeral package which is affordable to everyone, however if you wish to add to it you can”

Rated as ‘Good’ by the CQC we are here for you on a 24/7 basis. We also offer day care and respite break services. Come and visit us soon to find out more. See our full advert on the back page of this magazine for details
Alan Gannon & Sons also offer direct Cremations Direct cremations have always been around but are now increasing in popularity due to its simplicity and cost. This is aided with celebrities such as david bowie and author Anita Brooker opting for this. A direct cremation is where a deceased is transported from the mortuary directly to the crematorium within a few days following the death. It is a minimalist option, whereby there are no attendance, procession, or ceremony. A direct cremation should not be considered a ‘Cheap Funeral’, simply it removes the constraints and stress of making prompt formal decisions. This then allows families to arrange more fitting memorial service or reception at a time, and place more suited for all to attend, if desired. Alan Gannon & Sons believe in compassion, a personal service and putting families first. Alan says “I’m in a position of trust when families are at their most vulnerable. Something I hold with high regard, I cannot let them down”.
