Round Wood Brightens Heathfield
ound Wood of Mayfield recently helped dress a Sainsburys and Waitrose with landscape planters as part of the Brighter Heathfield initiative. Round Wood, based on Newick Lane just outside the town, recently offered their support to the Brighter Heathfield Volunteers by donating three beautiful Fibrestone Contemporary Trough Planters which have found their new homes outside the local Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. Committee member, Sue Young said of the planters: “They have really made a difference to the areas outside of Waitrose and Sainsburys. The grey gives a crisp contemporary look that contrasts well with the store colours and plants that were used”.
Fibrestone is an ideal material for planters. Whilst it offers the durability of Fibreglass, Fibrestone still holds a solid and heavy feel, provided by the stone powder mixed into the composite. Along with being durable, these planters are low maintenance making them an excellent choice for commercial use. These 1m planters are UV and frost protected allowing Brighter Heathfield Volunteers to keep the local area bright and cheery all year round. “The planters are much appreciated by passers-by. We got several compliments even when we were just potting them up.”

A road trip Down Under with Southern Cross Travel
here’s nothing like a great Aussie road trip! It’s the best way to see the real Australia, meeting friendly locals; spotting some of the country’s wonderful wildlife; eating fish and chips on a picture postcard beach and pulling into welcoming winery properties, cute campsites and homely B&Bs at the end of each day.
The freedom of the open road is intoxicating – just ask our Aussie Specialists! In Australia there’s a road trip to suit all tastes and budgets and some of your holiday highlights will be the moments when you pull in to a deserted cove for a swim, stop off for lunch at a cellar door manned by a friendly winemaker and his dog, and when you suddenly spot a mob of kangaroos. Aussies drive on the left and the roads tend to be in excellent condition with a lot less traffic than we’re used to in the UK so driving in Australia is a joy. It’s a big country though so the team at Southern Cross Travel will be sure to plan your trip well. We will ensure you see diverse
landscapes, whilst also leaving enough time to enjoy those special moments in the great outdoors.
For first time visitors to Australia, our Premier Aussie Specialist, Penny, recommends a road trip through the state of Victoria. A compact little pocket in the south eastern corner that is full of colour, with fabulously photogenic highlights round every bend. With easy driving, in just a few short hours from Melbourne, you can journey from rugged mountains in the High Country to the white sandy beaches along the Great Ocean Road. You’ll get to see koalas snoozing in trees, hike through lush rainforest, swim with
dolphins and seals, play golf on a course with mobs of kangaroos and indulge in some of the world’s best food and wine experiences in rolling vineyards and picturesque coastal towns. With its amazing food scene, great nightlife and superb visitor attractions you probably won’t want to leave Melbourne but there are so many adventures on the city’s doorstep it’s worth going exploring. Whether you’ve got two days or two weeks there is a road trip for you. Wine tasting in the Yarra Valley, a helicopter ride over the Great Ocean Road, paddling with platypus, seeing the Phillip Island penguins, visiting a koala sanctuary – all these can be enjoyed in this colourful corner of Oz.
At Southern Cross Travel, we have over 40 years’ experience and first-hand knowledge of this beautiful country. We still marvel at the scenery; we are awed by the nature and Outback; find every wildlife experience as unique as the first; love the lifestyle and cuisine; enjoy and revel in the locals we get to meet, and relish the opportunity to share our knowledge, experience, and our personal service with you, our customers. So, what are you waiting for? Contact the Aussie Specialists at Southern Cross Travel today to discuss your bespoke selfdrive holiday in Australia. Formula E returns to London The countdown begins: The ABB FIA Formula E Championship returns to the UK capital in 12 months time for the 2019/20 season finale. 24 cars and drivers going head-to-head in the historical heartland of the city’s docklands on July 25 & 26, 2020.
o celebrate the start of the 12-month countdown to the 2020 London E-Prix and grand finale of the 2019/20 season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, organisers pulled the covers off a brand new Union Jack liveried Gen2 car at a unique pop-up event activation at ExCeL London. “We’re excited to be bringing the future of motorsport to the UK capital and believe that the London E-Prix will become one of the flagship events in global motorsport, right up there with the likes of Monaco, Macau and Le Mans.” said Alejandro Agag, Founder & CEO of Formula E. Racing around the city’s iconic Royal Docks and ExCeL London exhibition centre, the race will be the first time that an FIA-sanctioned championship event has taken place in and around the streets of London - with Crystal Palace hosting non-championship races in Formula One almost half a century ago.
Consisting of 20 turns, the 2.4km track will see the drivers run along the waterfront for the season finale double-header of the 2019/20 campaign on July 25 & 26, 2020. With 24 all-electric cars going head-tohead, the London race will be a first for top-level international motorsport. Made possible by the emissions-free nature of the Gen2 cars, the unique track weaves its way both inside and outside of ExCeL London. Celebrating the start of the 12-month countdown, a pop-up event space was revealed in the West entrance of the ExCeL London centre, where fans learnt everything about the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, and what to expect at the event and register for tickets ahead of the first release. “This is the first time that a championship event has been staged in and around the streets of London and it’s a race that any category would be proud to have on its
calendar. But only the ABB FIA Formula E Championship can, because our cars are fully-electric and emissions-free,” said Agag. “Fans can expect a great spectator experience - just 18-minutes from the city centre on public transport - and our ambition is for ExCeL London to become the home of Formula E in the UK for many years to come, as well as the London E-Prix featuring as a mainstay of a British summer of sport. We want it to become a must-attend event that you just can’t miss out on, like Wimbledon, Royal Ascot and the Lord’s Test Match. “The ABB FIA Formula E Championship is about bringing motorsport to the masses, with wheel-to-wheel action, affordable ticket prices and unpredictable racing. That’s not something that can be said about other series right now, and Formula E is putting the sport back into motorsport,” added the Formula E boss. www.fiaformulae.com

reated by car customiser and personality Yiannimize, the bespoke, Union Jack liveried Gen2 car has 250kW of power. Formula E’s Gen2 will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 2.8-seconds and go on to a top speed of 280km/h. Greater speeds, more action on track and with just one car per driver - there’s everything to lose. Due to its all-electric powertrain, the cars and drivers are able to race both inside and outside the ExCeL London exhibition centre, tackling the unique, indoor/outdoor 2.4km track on the 25 & 26 July, 2020. After announcing plans to ban the sale of all combustion engined cars by 2040 in the UK, the E-Prix in the country’s capital will help to promote the adoption and development of electric road cars. With 11 of the world’s greatest car manufacturers going head to head on the city streets, the Championship serves as a test bed for everyday electric road car technology. Standing as a home E-Prix for British teams Envision Virgin Racing and Panasonic Jaguar Racing, the London race could see all five current British Formula E drivers go head-to-head on home turf. “As the UK’s largest automotive manufacturer, with a rich heritage in motorsport, a race in the capital will be a real highlight next season and exciting news for all British motorsport fans and our thousands of employees here in the UK,” said James Barclay, Team Principal of Panasonic Jaguar Racing.

Leonardo DiCaprioproduced Formula E documentary gets Cannes premiere A new documentary produced by Leonardo DiCaprio that covers ABB FIA Formula E’s final Gen1 season in 2017/18 had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The film, called ‘And We Go Green’, is a behind the scenes look at the electric single-seater championship and covers Jean-Eric Vergne’s title winning campaign last season. It is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens - also artistic director of the Extreme E off-road SUV racing championship that FE is set to operate - and Malcolm Venville. ‘And We Go Green’, which features unseen race footage from the final season of FE’s Gen1 era, was screened at the Salle 60eme cinema. “The documentary encapsulates the true mission and purpose of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, to show how competition drives technological development and how the excitement of sport can have a meaningful social impact and alter perceptions of electric vehicles,” said FE CEO Alejandro Agag, who is also one of the film’s executive producers. “This notion is how the title ‘And We Go Green’ came about.
Alejandro Agag, Orlando Bloom and Leonardo DiCaprio
“Not only does it signal the start of our races, but it also indicates an urgent need to put the brakes on devastating and irreparable damage already caused by fossil fuels. “I’m proud to have worked with such great talent and a production team who share the same common values around sustainability and making a positive impact in the fight against climate change.” DiCaprio, Agag, and FE racers Vergne, Lucas di Grassi, Sam Bird, Andre Lotterer, as well as former Jaguar driver Nelson Piquet Jr, attended the premiere of ‘And We Go Green’. Sun 29th Sept. Posting Letters to the Moon

lan Gannon and his family have been working in and around the funeral industry locally for some years. Alan saw an opportunity to start his own independent family run funeral directors in the local area, after seeing the amount of families who struggled to meet the ever rising costs of a funeral (currently averaging approximately £4469 in the South East). Alan says “ Its not about how much you spend on a funeral, its about the people who are involved” Alan prides himself on being the only person you will be dealing with at every stage of the arrangement, and contactable whenever you need him “Some families need more time than others, having my own funeral directors means I can give as much time, and care to each family as required” For Alan the importance of being able to deliver a funeral at an affordable cost without compromising on quality or professionalism is key “I have created a funeral package which is affordable to everyone, however if you wish to add to it you can”

Alan Gannon & Sons also offer direct Cremations Direct cremations have always been around but are now increasing in popularity due to its simplicity and cost. This is aided with celebrities such as david bowie and author Anita Brooker opting for this. A direct cremation is where a deceased is transported from the mortuary directly to the crematorium within a few days following the death. It is a minimalist option, whereby there are no attendance, procession, or ceremony. A direct cremation should not be considered a ‘Cheap Funeral’, simply it removes the constraints and stress of making prompt formal decisions. This then allows families to arrange more fitting memorial service or reception at a time, and place more suited for all to attend, if desired. Alan Gannon & Sons believe in compassion, a personal service and putting families first. Alan says “I’m in a position of trust when families are at their most vulnerable. Something I hold with high regard, I cannot let them down”.
