At various venues in Hastings. In New Orleans and Rio they call it Mardi Gras, in Venice it’s known as Carnivale and Hastings has “Fat Tuesday” (English for Mardi Gras). Traditionally occurring on Shrove Tuesday which is the last day before Ash Wednesday, “Fat Tuesday” is a chance for people to let their hair down before (in theory) observing the restrictions of Lent. This Festival borrows heavily from the New Orleans take on Mardi Gras, combining the enjoyment of good music, a flair for dressing up and partying. www.hastingsfattuesday.co.uk

ENENDEN Hospital is offering FREE consultations for hip and knee replacements until 30 April plus 10% discount on the treatment price! The private hospital, rated “Outstanding” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), will also be holding a free open morning for prospective patients to find out more about hip and knee replacement surgery. Come along to the hospital near Cranbrook in Kent on Saturday, 23 March, from 10.30am to 12.30pm and hear presentations from Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons Richard Goddard and Kumar Reddy. Mr Goddard is a highly-experienced surgeon who graduated from Leeds University School of Medicine in 1997. He is a member of international orthopaedic faculties and frequently lectures on anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, knee replacement and partial knee replacement surgery. Mr Reddy specialises in total hip and knee replacements, revision total hip and knee replacements, arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction and meniscal repairs. Benenden Hospital carries out nearly 300 hip and knee replacements every year with physiotherapy included and podiatry also available. Rose and Sue are two former patients…. Sue’s problems with her knees first started when she fell over and twisted her leg For about three months, she struggled to walk and arthritis began to set in over the years. “It got to the point where it was really impacting on my life,” she said. “Lifting anything was virtually impossible because it would give me real pain, so would just getting in and out of the car. I’m a lawn bowler and, although I was still playing, it was a struggle.”

Sue underwent two knee replacements at Benenden and has since made a full recovery. She is now back playing bowls and recently completed a 10-mile sponsored walk for charity! “I love the personal touch that Benenden Hospital provides. From my first appointment through to the end of my treatment, the staff listened to any issues I had, however minor, and made me feel very at ease. “Now I feel like a new person and I just want to give others the confidence to do it.” Having spent three months in another hospital after suffering complications following an operation, Rose was naturally “extremely apprehensive” about going to Benenden for a total hip replacement. But she says: “Benenden Hospital restored my confidence to go ahead with the operation. From day one, everyone was so helpful and kind.” “I couldn’t wish for a better consultant, he was absolutely brilliant. I was seen straight away.” A Benenden Health member, Rose underwent a hip replacement and was discharged after four days. “I cannot say how I relieved I was when they tapped me on the shoulder and said ‘no complications’. “I was on Bensan Ward and nothing was too much trouble for the nursing and catering staff. I came home and never had any problems and the pain had gone which was a bonus. “Although I was taking painkillers, I could walk and I would have no hesitation in recommending Benenden Hospital.” * To book a free consultation at Benenden Hospital, call 01580 232494 or for more information, go to www.benenden.org.uk/hips-knees

Friday 15th - 16th March - Mountbatten Festival of Music

Opera South East welcomes Fraser Grant back again to direct this April’s production of Verdi’s, La Traviata. Based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel and play La Dame aux camélias, inspired by the life and death of the real Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis. Verdi offered a more complex and sympathetic portrayal of his heroine than Dumas, highlighting Violetta’s noble nature and her devotion to Alfredo. La Traviata had an initially lukewarm reception, but after Verdi revised the work in 1854 it became enormously successful. It is currently the most performed opera in the world, and the role of Violetta a favourite for many star sopranos. Aching to belong yet desperate to be free, Violetta, finds herself trapped in a dying body just as a youthful and ardent lover gives her very existence new meaning. As her life fades away, memories of the recent past swirl before her. Set against the backdrop of a Paris about to be changed for ever, this production of the most beloved of all operas promises to be both poignant and exciting. Kenneth Roberts, conductor, is joined in the pit by the Sussex Concert Orchestra, for this wonderful feast of music and drama. You’ll be sitting on the edge of your seats throughout!

Q&A with Systemic Constellation Practitioner Shivaun Woolfson What is Systemic Constellation?

It’s a therapeutic model developed by German philosopher and psychotherapist Bert Hellinger. It recognises that individuals are part of ‘systems’ – within a family, at the workplace, or even cultural or tribal contexts. Because of this, it’s a bit different from mainstream therapies. Often, issues are relational, not just limited to the person who’s experiencing the problem. Knowing this allows for healing, for shifts or movement to occur.

What happens in a session?

It’s hard to explain. It’s an embodied and experience-based process. Usually, a person tells me a bit about what’s troubling them. We ‘constellate’ aspects of that given situation and create a ‘living map’ from these various aspects. Really, what we’re doing is tapping into the ‘Knowing Field’ so that underlying dynamics and entanglements can surface.

Can you explain further?

Maybe an example will help. I had a

client who had a difficult relationship with her daughter, who was very ill. In the session, guilt associated with her inability to ‘fix’ her daughter’s illness surfaced. This became an unspoken burden her daughter was carrying. Not long after the session, things changed between them and they were able to mend their relationship.

Do you have to have multiple sessions?

Some clients experience palpable and immediate shifts after one session. Others ask for a follow up session several weeks, even months or years after.

What about horse constellations?

The process is the same, but in this case, a horse is involved. Horses are very intuitive, and for some people, because the exchange is non-verbal, a horse guided session can be very powerful because horses have no preconception, agenda or bias. They’re like mirrors of the unconscious and unspoken within us in that present moment.

T

he design for The RHS Back to Nature Garden, co-designed by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge and Landscape Architects Andree Davies and Adam White, for the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, (21st-25th May) has been unveiled.

Key elements of the woodland Garden include a beautifully crafted hollow log for children to climb through, a den, waterfall, stream and tree house. Sue Biggs, RHS Director General, said: “We couldn’t be happier with the wonderful design by The Duchess of Cambridge and Andrée and Adam for our Garden at Chelsea this year. “There are many sensory elements to help children to learn. Active play in the fresh air is also important for a child’s development and getting back to nature has been shown to be good for developing

creativity, increasing physical activity and reducing stress.” The tree house, the centre piece of the Garden, is constructed from a beautiful tree with a high platform clad in stag horn oak. It has a natural feel, with the stag horn looking like a bird or animal that has built a home in the tree. A swing seat hangs from the branches, creating a place for children and families to play together. There is a waterfall and stream for families to play with water, from floating Pooh sticks and chasing them along the stream, to making dams with stones and sand to attract more wildlife. Children and adults alike can balance on the stepping stones or simply relax by the stream, paddling in it on a hot day. Wild trees and shrubs and a cool calm colour palette of green and blue provide an instant ‘nature fix’ to relax and calm. The playful and diverse planting includes edibles, plants for craft activities and forest scents, ranging from tiny wild strawberries to magnificent trees. The flowers, fruits and seeds provide food for wildlife and nectar for bees and butterflies. The plants also provide nesting sites for birds, and cover for other animals to hide in the garden. A playful pathway bordered with beautiful

textures of large and small leaves weaves through the garden, around rocks and stepping stones. The garden has been inspired by childhood memories that are triggered by the natural world, as well as special moments that will be created and treasured by families now and in the future. The RHS Back to Nature Garden is key to the RHS’s partnership with NHS England, promoting the physical and emotional well-being that access to green spaces and gardening provides. After RHS Chelsea, much of the planting and some of the landscaping will go to an NHS Mental Health Trust, as part of a national competition run by the RHS. Continuing the collaboration and to engage even wider audiences, The Duchess of Cambridge and Davies White will be co-designing two further RHS Gardens, maintaining many of elements from the Garden at Chelsea, at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival (2 July – 7 July 2019) and RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, which will open in the Autumn later this year. Tickets are now available to buy now at www.rhs.org.uk/shows

ome Instead Senior Care are devoted to providing the highest quality awardwinning help and support for older people in the comfort of their own homes - where they feel most happy and comfortable. It doesn’t matter how simple or complex our clients’ needs are, our CAREGivers ensure that each individual is cared for with respect, dignity and compassion. Our service is relationship-led and is tailored to each individuals needs. Our visit duration of an hour or more enables us to provide a high quality, unhurried service. Many older people are able to live at home independently with the help of a CAREGiver, and once they get that help, they often can’t imagine being without it. In many cases, older people and their families find themselves thinking that some help is needed, however they are unsure about where to start looking for that help, or perhaps don’t really understand how that help will make a difference. Caring for a family member can often become daunting when a person needs help with Personal Care (bathing, having a wash or getting to the bathroom) and getting in a CAREGiver for these tasks can make it possible for a family to continue caring for their family member at home. In many instances, caring for a family member becomes a team effort between family, friends and CAREGivers. Home Instead Senior Care CAREGivers are carefully recruited and go through an

extensive induction process, and they also have the support from our office team 7 days a week. CAREGivers will be individually matched with each client and a relationship of trust is developed through consistency of visits. Through this approach, we can closely observe the health and well-being of our clients and adapt our service to any changes required giving families the peace of mind they need. Many of our CAREGivers have become carers

after experiencing caring for a loved one first hand so they understand the challenges, doubts and emotions that each family is going through. We take great pride in helping our clients to live comfortably and confidently at home and our CAREGivers are devoted to providing the highest quality award winning help and support for older people in the comfort of their own homes.

lan Gannon and his family have been working in and around the funeral industry locally for some years. Alan saw an opportunity to start his own independent family run funeral directors in the local area, after seeing the amount of families who struggled to meet the ever rising costs of a funeral (currently averaging approximately £4469 in the South East). Alan says “ Its not about how much you spend on a funeral, its about the people who are involved” Alan prides himself on being the only person you will be dealing with at every stage of the arrangement, and contactable whenever you need him “Some families need more time than others, having my own funeral directors means I can give as much time, and care to each family as required” For Alan the importance of being able to deliver a funeral at an affordable cost without compromising on quality or professionalism is key “I have created a funeral package which is affordable to everyone, however if you wish to add to it you can”

Alan Gannon & Sons also offer direct Cremations Direct cremations have always been around but are now increasing in popularity due to its simplicity and cost. This is aided with celebrities such as david bowie and author Anita Brooker opting for this. A direct cremation is where a deceased is transported from the mortuary directly to the crematorium within a few days following the death. It is a minimalist option, whereby there are no attendance, procession, or ceremony. A direct cremation should not be considered a ‘Cheap Funeral’, simply it removes the constraints and stress of making prompt formal decisions. This then allows families to arrange more fitting memorial service or reception at a time, and place more suited for all to attend, if desired. Alan Gannon & Sons believe in compassion, a personal service and putting families first. Alan says “I’m in a position of trust when families are at their most vulnerable. Something I hold with high regard, I cannot let them down”.
