RA

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

The Royal Academy of Arts Summer Party and Exhibition Exhibition continues until 12th August

F

ollowing last year’s record-breaking 250th Summer Exhibition, this annual celebration of art and creativity continues in 2019. Run without interruption since 1769, the Summer Exhibition is the world’s largest open submission art show and brings together art in all mediums – prints and paintings, film, photography, sculpture, architectural works and more – by leading artists, Royal Academicians and household names as well as new and emerging talent. This year, acclaimed British painter Jock McFadyen RA takes the mantle from Grayson Perry to co-ordinate the 251st Summer Exhibition. Over 1,500 works are on display, most of them for the first time. Highlights include an animal-themed ‘menagerie’ in the Central Hall, with works by artists including Polly Morgan, Charles Avery, Banksy and Mat Collishaw. Artist sisters Jane and Louise Wilson RA have curated two galleries, one of which showcases work exploring light and time. Further artists exhibiting include Jeremy Deller, Marcus Harvey and Tracey Emin RA, and Honorary Academicians Anselm Kiefer, James Turrell and Wim Wenders.

As always, most of the artworks are for sale with proceeds helping to fund the Academy’s non-profit-making activities, including educating the next generation of artists in the RA Schools. What’s On Magazine was invited to attend the launch party of The Royal Academy’s

Summer Exhibition to mark the 251st year of the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry CBE RA co-hosted this year’s annual Summer Exhibition Preview Party. The party was held in the presence of Christopher Le Brun PRA, artist and President of the Royal Academy of Arts. This year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition was co-ordinated by acclaimed British painter, Jock McFadyen RA., alongside the Summer Exhibition Hanging Committee, who has continued to build on the exhibitions’ success by providing a unique platform for artists at all stages of their career. Celebrated artist Thomas Houseago showcased a group of large-scale

sculptural works in the Royal Academy’s Annenberg Courtyard that respond to the Academy’s statue of Joshua Reynolds, which has stood in the courtyard since 1931. To carry on the celebrations, Grayson Perry CBE RA held an intimate dinner in the RA Collections Gallery within the Royal Academy, Burlington Gardens. Guests joined Grayson for a relaxed dinner of locally sourced, British inspired menu created by Rocket Food. Continues until 12 August 2019 Daily 10am – 6pm. Friday 10am – 10pm £18 (without donation £16). Concessions available. Under-16s go free with a feepaying adult. Free for Friends of the RA with no booking required. Main Galleries and The Ronald and Rita McAulay Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts. Summer Exhibition Explorer Many of the works in the Summer Exhibition 2019 will be available to browse and buy online through the Summer Exhibition Explorer https://se.royalacademy.org.uk/ All pictures by What’s On Magazine

History of the Summer Exhibition One of the founding principles of the Royal Academy of Arts was to “mount an annual exhibition open to all artists of distinguished merit” to finance the training of young artists in the Royal Academy Schools. The Summer Exhibition has been held every year without interruption since 1769 and continues to play a significant part in raising funds to finance the students of the RA Schools. The RA Schools is the longest established art school in the UK and offers the only free three-year postgraduate programme in Europe. As the world’s largest open submission contemporary art show, the Summer Exhibition provides a unique platform for emerging and established artists to showcase their works to an international audience, comprising a range of media from painting and printmaking to photography, sculpture, architecture and film. Royal Academicians are automatically entitled to submit up to six works to the Summer Exhibition and the rest of the exhibition features work by those invited by the committee and external entrants.

About the Royal Academy of Arts The Royal Academy of Arts was founded by King George III in 1768. It has a unique position in being an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects whose purpose is to be a clear, strong voice for art and artists. Its public programme promotes the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate. The Royal Academy launched a new campus as part of the celebrations of its 250th anniversary year in 2018. Following a transformative redevelopment, designed by the internationallyacclaimed architect Sir David Chipperfield RA and supported by the National Lottery, the new Royal Academy of Arts reveals more of the elements that make the RA unique – sharing with the public historic treasures from its Collection, the work of its Royal Academicians and the Royal Academy Schools, and its role as a centre for learning and debate about art and architecture – alongside its world-class exhibitions programme.

The plant nursery although now firmly established has limited expansion space, and with increased family involvement led to the opening of a new garden centre at Salts Farm, Rye in April this year. Many of the plants are sourced from local suppliers and they also grow their own at their Fairlight nursery. A local delivery

lan Gannon and his family have been working in and around the funeral industry locally for some years. Alan saw an opportunity to start his own independent family run funeral directors in the local area, after seeing the amount of families who struggled to meet the ever rising costs of a funeral (currently averaging approximately £4469 in the South East). Alan says “ Its not about how much you spend on a funeral, its about the people who are involved” Alan prides himself on being the only person you will be dealing with at every stage of the arrangement, and contactable whenever you need him “Some families need more time than others, having my own funeral directors means I can give as much time, and care to each family as required” For Alan the importance of being able to deliver a funeral at an affordable cost without compromising on quality or professionalism is key “I have created a funeral package which is affordable to everyone, however if you wish to add to it you can”

At The Bandstand, Grand Parade, Eastbourne. Eastbourne Gilbert & Sullivan Society will captivate you with a collaboration of songs from the fourteen memorable, world famous, comic operas dating back to the late 19th Century. This year focusing on The Pirates of Penzance. 01323 410611.

Alan Gannon & Sons also offer direct Cremations Direct cremations have always been around but are now increasing in popularity due to its simplicity and cost. This is aided with celebrities such as david bowie and author Anita Brooker opting for this. A direct cremation is where a deceased is transported from the mortuary directly to the crematorium within a few days following the death. It is a minimalist option, whereby there are no attendance, procession, or ceremony. A direct cremation should not be considered a ‘Cheap Funeral’, simply it removes the constraints and stress of making prompt formal decisions. This then allows families to arrange more fitting memorial service or reception at a time, and place more suited for all to attend, if desired. Alan Gannon & Sons believe in compassion, a personal service and putting families first. Alan says “I’m in a position of trust when families are at their most vulnerable. Something I hold with high regard, I cannot let them down”.
