Let’s take literature first. Saturday 14th September marks an inaugural cRYmE Day! This will be a whole day, festival within a festival and will be a great opportunity to meet, listen to and eat with four well-known crime writers - Simon Brett, Martin Edwards, William Shaw and Lynne Truss – and to find out tricks of the trade and what makes them tick. Lord Owen – the former British Foreign Secretary David Owen – will be coming to Rye at 7.00pm on Wednesday 25 September to talk about his new book ‘Hubris - The Road to Donald Trump’. And on Monday 23rd March, also at 7pm, Sir Max Hastings will be dropping into town to

Williams will be accompanied on Friday 27th September by pianist Iain Burnside. The contemporary music features two of the UK’s best folk duos. The Carthys are possibly the nearest thing to British Folk royalty! This chronic disease can be identified by looking out for signs of deterioration in the tree in the form of leaf loss, lesions appearing on the bark and stem and perennial cankers. “Ash dieback is terribly sad. Previously beautiful, healthy trees can become very dangerous. However, if spotted and dealt with promptly, an emergency tree removal can be prevented.” Commented, Nick Danson, Owner of Danson Tree Care Ltd.

RHS Hampton Court 2019
he RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival supported by Viking delivered a celebration of flowers to the historic Hampton Court Palace in July. With an abundance of beautiful gardens and plants on display, the festival brought together thought-provoking designs to highlight the power of plants alongside plenty of inspiration for visitors to grow a garden they love. Promoting the benefits of green spaces, the RHS Sanctuary offered a hidden area based on ‘Hortus Concluses’, Latin for ‘enclosed garden’ designed by Ula Maria. Ideal for contemplation and meditation, the garden took you on a journey of the body, mind and soul. Medicinal planting reflected its transitions while herbal, aromatherapy and meditation workshops complemented the garden’s therapeutic qualities. This year’s Show Gardens also promoted the positive impact of plants. Teaming up with first time designer Aleksandra Bartczak, Crest Nicholson created a small public park dedicated to physical and mental wellbeing. The garden was divided into a community space and a contemplation area to encourage reflection and allow neighbours of all ages to come together.

lan Gannon and his family have been working in and around the funeral industry locally for some years. Alan saw an opportunity to start his own independent family run funeral directors in the local area, after seeing the amount of families who struggled to meet the ever rising costs of a funeral (currently averaging approximately £4469 in the South East). Alan says “ Its not about how much you spend on a funeral, its about the people who are involved” Alan prides himself on being the only person you will be dealing with at every stage of the arrangement, and contactable whenever you need him “Some families need more time than others, having my own funeral directors means I can give as much time, and care to each family as required” For Alan the importance of being able to deliver a funeral at an affordable cost without compromising on quality or professionalism is key “I have created a funeral package which is affordable to everyone, however if you wish to add to it you can”

Alan Gannon & Sons also offer direct Cremations Direct cremations have always been around but are now increasing in popularity due to its simplicity and cost. This is aided with celebrities such as david bowie and author Anita Brooker opting for this. A direct cremation is where a deceased is transported from the mortuary directly to the crematorium within a few days following the death. It is a minimalist option, whereby there are no attendance, procession, or ceremony. A direct cremation should not be considered a ‘Cheap Funeral’, simply it removes the constraints and stress of making prompt formal decisions. This then allows families to arrange more fitting memorial service or reception at a time, and place more suited for all to attend, if desired. Alan Gannon & Sons believe in compassion, a personal service and putting families first. Alan says “I’m in a position of trust when families are at their most vulnerable. Something I hold with high regard, I cannot let them down”.
