meet the locals a refurbishment project using local professionals

F

aced with a long term rental property which had lost it’s former glory, we had to make some difficult decisions about what to do with it. Do we sell it and cash in the investment? Do we use the profit and buy something else? Or do we renovate and update it?

Sitting on the cash in the bank wouldn’t be sensible with such low interest rates and paying a huge stamp duty fee just to buy another house seemed ridiculous. The only option left was to renovate it so that became the plan. The house is a mix of 1960’s & 70’s, a three bed detached bungalow that hadn’t had any major work done for many years. Every wall and ceiling had wallpaper on it. We wanted to redesign the property to add another bedroom and more en-suite facilities. The central heating needed updating and the radiators were struggling to heat the property. We have found that using local professionals is always best so we called in Plumber Don to advise us on updating the heating system and re plumbing the property to accommodate the extra bathrooms. Don advised an unvented system to provide the necessary water pressure and as we were having stone floors fitted, this was definitely the time to replace all the radiators for modern, efficient, thermostatically controlled ones.

T

he radiators, the new boiler, baths, shower enclosures and all plumbing fixtures and fittings were supplied by City Plumbing. Our mission was to renovate this bungalow to become a four bedroom and four bathroom property full of warmth and charm. The heart of any home is of course the kitchen, so we decided on a natural stone flooring supplied and fitted by Padstone Natural Stone Tiles. Owner Patrick has worked with us on many other projects in the past and always comes up with design suggestions we hadn’t thought of. The limestone we selected is a type we have used before and provides not only an attractive finish with all of it’s natural marble and fossils within it, but is also a smooth surface which is easy to wipe and keep clean. For the bathrooms we chose a grey porcelain tile which couldn’t be damaged by general household cleaning products. Patrick advised on the layout of the tiling to create the desired look for each room.

O

ne of the biggest decisions in the project was to remove the old pine plank roof in the lounge to create a vaulted ceiling to give the room the feeling of light and space. Having used them several times before, we asked PB Builders to take care of this and all other construction parts of the project together with the fitting of a new kitchen and all painting and finishing work. Ben and Paul (PB Builders) coordinated with our other trade professionals to complete each part of the job so that all the other work could be kept moving. In effect they were our Project Managers making sure everything came together as planned. All electrical work at the property was completed by Tom Papworth of Papworth Electrical. Again we have known Tom for many years and he has completed numerous projects for us. All the sockets in the house had to be updated and since the boiler had now been moved to a separate part of the house this all had to be wired in separately. Finally, the lighting all needed updating and security systems had to be installed. Are you renovating too? Our trusted professionals can be seen here from page 18 - 22 and we would thoroughly recommend them to you.

Chelsea 2019 Andy Sturgeon wins prestigious Best Show Garden Award at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019

T

he Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has awarded 118 RHS Medals to the gardens and floral exhibits in the Great Pavilion at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show (21-25 May) with Andy Sturgeon scooping the title of Best in Show for The M&G Garden. Celebrating nature’s extraordinary power to regenerate landscapes with new growth, The M&G Garden is a vibrantly green and lush environment, featuring a biodiverse range of pioneering plant species from around the world. Its dramatic composition offers a variety of textures and designs, with burnt oak timber sculptures slicing through the natural woodland. A decorated designer, Andy was awarded Best in Show when he last exhibited at the world famous Flower Show with The Daily

Telegraph Garden in 2016. RHS judge James Alexander-Sinclair said: “We seldom have the pleasure of judging perfection but in this case, Andy Sturgeon’s garden did not disappoint. The garden delighted designers, thrilled landscapers and perked up the plants people to no end.” Gardens among the Gold Medal winners also included The Morgan Stanley Garden by Chris Beardshaw, The Welcome to Yorkshire Garden by Mark Gregory and Sarah Eberle’s return to Main Avenue with The Resilience Garden, which also won the Best Construction Award. In the Artisan and Space to grow categories, two debut designers scooped the coveted Best in titles this year, with Artisan awarded to Alistair Bayford for the Family Monsters Garden and Best in Space

to Grow going to Facebook: Beyond the Screen by Joe Perkins. For the first time the RHS has attributed an additional Best Construction Award between the two smaller garden categories, meaning a double win for Facebook and Joe Perkins. A total of 57 Gold Medals were awarded to nurseries and growers at the heart of the Show in the Great Pavilion alongside 25 Silver-Gilt Medals, eight Silver Medals and two Bronze Medals. The Diamond Jubilee Award for the best exhibit in the Great Pavilion was presented to Kelnan Plants, who were awarded their eighth gold medal for an impressive display of mature Restio and South African flora. Lily and bulb specialists Harts Nurseries won the coveted President’s Award, presented and chosen by RHS President Sir Nicholas Bacon.

GIFTS FOR MEN I can’t help thinking men are a little hard done by on the high street for gifts, so we’ve pulled out all the stops to bring you some great ideas. Here’s just a few of our favourites!

Razor honing pad

Dramatically extend the life of cartridge and disposable razors by three to five times! This will save money, reduce unnecessary plastic waste and help you to enjoy a smoother shave for much, much longer. Made from thick naturally tanned cowhide leather and a reclaimed teak base (which has excellent natural water resistance), it is lightweight and portable, useful and designed to last – what’s not to love?

Camera lamp

These fabulous lamps are upcycled and converted cameras that no longer serve their purpose as fully functioning cameras. Each one comes with an industrial looking LED bulb and is operated by an on/off switch on the mains cable. All are PAT (safety) tested.

Salmon curing kit

Struggling to get your Dad a fantastic gift for Father’s Day? This award-winning salmon curing kit contains everything you need to make artisan dry-cured fish at home. Just add the salmon! Ideal for a proper Foodie who loves venturing into new food trends - three curing flavours are provided, or someone that is a beginner and wants to try out new culinary experiences - a unique hands-on experience to remember. Complete with easy to read instructions.

Still going strong 6-years on! Hastings-based, family-run, tree surgery firm, Danson Tree Care Ltd, is celebrating its’ 6-year anniversary this month and would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone that has helped to keep them going.

Antler cufflinks

These antler cufflinks are handcrafted beautifully using red deer antler in a small workshop in the Scottish Highlands that up-cycles waste products such as shotgun cartridges and reclaimed wood from local Scottish estates into handmade, shooting-themed gifts. Every piece of antler is unique, the colour and size depending on the age of the stag and the area where it lived.

“The last six years has flown by . . . we always try to go that extra mile for our customers; I think that’s why they keep coming back! We are very lucky to have some prestigious clients now, but our local customers got us off the ground, and we never forget that.” Karen Danson, owner of Danson Tree Care.

Roses at Pashley Manor Gardens From mid-June the roses are at their best at Pashley Manor Gardens – a blend of old fashioned and modern roses are complemented by foxgloves, clematis, London pride, sweet peas and summer flowering shrubs. Masses of gorgeous pinks can be found spilling out of their box hedged borders in the formal Rose Garden and the pale pink, abundant blooms of Rosa Irene Watts parade either side of the Rose Walk. In the Herbaceous Borders many red hued shrub roses in the beds are complemented by rich red climbing roses on the eighteenth century walls, while in the pool garden the unusual silver sheened petals of Rosa Burgundy charmingly mirror the gleam of the water. Such is the profusion of roses at this time that even the front of the house is covered in the pink tinged, creamy yellow flowers of the climbing Rosa Gloire de Dijon. Over the Special Rose Week there will be the opportunity to take a rose themed walk round the gardens and there is a great selection of potted roses, from 26 times Chelsea Gold Medal winners Peter Beales Roses, available to buy, as well as rose themed gifts from the Shop – even the menu in the café features rose inspired dishes over this week!

Bexhill Museum offers something for everyone – from local history and archaeology to fashion and Bexhill’s motor heritage. The unique collections are housed in a distinctive building which combines the traditional Edwardian with a modern extension. An accredited museum, we hold a number of important objects unique to the local area, including a model of the De La Warr Pavilion, the ‘Old Windmill’ painting by LS Lowry and a restored prototype of the 1950s Elva sports car. We are open daily from February to mid-December: Tuesday – Friday, 10am – 5pm. Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 11am – 5pm. We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds, particularly children and families. Children can do one of our quiz sheets, try the hands-on exhibits in the Motor Racing Gallery or take part in one of our special themed activities throughout the year. We offer a range of fascinating talks, lectures and walks related to the museum collections throughout the year to adult visitors. There is also a busy education programme for schools. Bexhill Museum is an independent charity that relies on volunteer support.

Now in its 22nd year, artists, craftspeople, printmakers and designers open their studio spaces for South East Open Studios. Open to the public from 7th to 23rd June, 2019, art lovers can grab a guide, create their own art trail and explore both the creativity and the beautiful landscape of the South East this summer. For the 17 days of the event, artists throw open their studio doors to the public and visitors can tour and explore unusual studio spaces from custom sheds to remote workshops, beachside galleries to beautiful purpose-built studios. Seeing the creativity artists put into their work spaces can be as fascinating as the art itself, and throughout the event many artists will be demonstrating in their studios. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet the creators behind distinctive and inspiring artworks, including ceramics, sculpture, glasswork, painting, printmaking and textiles.

lan Gannon and his family have been working in and around the funeral industry locally for some years. Alan saw an opportunity to start his own independent family run funeral directors in the local area, after seeing the amount of families who struggled to meet the ever rising costs of a funeral (currently averaging approximately £4469 in the South East). Alan says “ Its not about how much you spend on a funeral, its about the people who are involved” Alan prides himself on being the only person you will be dealing with at every stage of the arrangement, and contactable whenever you need him “Some families need more time than others, having my own funeral directors means I can give as much time, and care to each family as required” For Alan the importance of being able to deliver a funeral at an affordable cost without compromising on quality or professionalism is key “I have created a funeral package which is affordable to everyone, however if you wish to add to it you can”

Alan Gannon & Sons also offer direct Cremations Direct cremations have always been around but are now increasing in popularity due to its simplicity and cost. This is aided with celebrities such as david bowie and author Anita Brooker opting for this. A direct cremation is where a deceased is transported from the mortuary directly to the crematorium within a few days following the death. It is a minimalist option, whereby there are no attendance, procession, or ceremony. A direct cremation should not be considered a ‘Cheap Funeral’, simply it removes the constraints and stress of making prompt formal decisions. This then allows families to arrange more fitting memorial service or reception at a time, and place more suited for all to attend, if desired. Alan Gannon & Sons believe in compassion, a personal service and putting families first. Alan says “I’m in a position of trust when families are at their most vulnerable. Something I hold with high regard, I cannot let them down”.

Birds of a feather... There are still some who still think that the birds do not need feeding in our gardens this time of year. The reason being there is plenty of natural food to be found so keeping our feeders out makes them lazy and spoils them. Just looking back a few years we know that our actions have caused a drastic decline in numbers of many of the birds that once used to be common not only in the countryside but also in the urban areas. So it seems acceptable to destroy their natural habitat to a point of extinction but not to ensure we do what we can to help

them when in fact they need it. So please continue to keep some of your feeders full and make sure any bird baths in your gardens are topped up and clean. Enjoy your garden birds. Three of the next generation in my garden over the last month... Siskins, Pied Wagtails and Starlings
