Six professional soloists will take various roles in this epic work. The most famous of Bach’s choral works, the St Matthew Passion requires two orchestras and a double choir and is rarely offered locally. First performed in 1727 as part of the Good Friday service at the Thomaskirche, Leipzig, it was later revised by Bach in the 1730s and 1740s. The libretto, taken from St Matthew’s Gospel, recounts the final week of Jesus’ life, up to and including the Crucifixion. Complex choral pieces for the double choir are juxtaposed with haunting arias and Lutheran chorales. Tickets at £17 (£15 for under-18s) are available from the Battle Festival website, www.battlefestival.co.uk, from Rother Books and The Crafty Norman in Battle High Street, and on the door (cash or card).

THE PLASTIC REVOLUTION
More of us are aware of the impacts of plastics, the harm they cause to marine life and our food. Here are some of the ways we can all help.
Over 50% of the world’s plastic discarded in 2015 was plastic packaging. At home, we can reduce our use of cling film with beeswax wraps, great for wrapping cheese, packed lunches, covering dishes and protecting our toothbrush, razor or soap whilst travelling. They are washable, reusable, biodegradable and antibacterial.
Make-up remover pads
The disposable nature of cotton pads makes them wasteful. Cotton farming impacts the environment hugely, especially when not organically grown. Chemicals severely impact ecosystems and just one kilogram uses 20,000 litres of water, sucking dry surrounding areas causing loss of flora and fauna. Our make-up remover pads are made from scraps of cotton fabric, are washable/reusable so reducing environmental impact.
Our super sustainable soft and exceptionally strong general-purpose twine is perfect for traditional garden use, floristry, crafts and gift wrapping. Made from Dartmoor wool in a range of colours, it continues doing good after its working life by releasing nitrogen as it bio-degrades on the compost heap.
Did you know most teabags are coated in plastic to stop them disintegrating when you brew your teabag in a cup or pot? Switch to loose tea and one of our vintage teapots instead and enjoy a longer cuppa without the health risks and environmental impact. Keep your tea warm with one of our handknitted tea cosies. Paula Williams, Founder of BRITISH design BRITISH made, 64 High Street, Battle, TN33 0AG, helping you to buy British. What you buy here will not have arrived from far flung places or travelled thousands of miles by air and sea. We use 100% renewable electricity, every drop made from British sun, wind and rain. We aim to re-use or recycle at least 90% supplier packaging to reduce landfill. We seek out and promote products that are made with sustainable or recycled materials.

An Introduction to Resin Bound surfacing When it used to come to re-surfacing your driveway the first thought was always Tarmac or Block paving. Both systems can look tired quite quickly. Have you heard of or seen the surface ‘Resin Bound’? It is a smart new way to revitalise your driveway, path or patio and is a striking improvement on other older surfaces like block paving. Enviro-Tech Resin Systems Ltd is a local family run business, which have been installing ‘Resin Bound’ for over 10 years and have been asked to install in many prestigious places over the years, including The Royal Botanical Gardens @ Kew. Both Owners of Enviro-Tech have been in the Resin industry for over 20 years and their knowledge on the subject is second to none.

lan Gannon and his family have been working in and around the funeral industry locally for some years. Alan saw an opportunity to start his own independent family run funeral directors in the local area, after seeing the amount of families who struggled to meet the ever rising costs of a funeral (currently averaging approximately £4469 in the South East). Alan says “ Its not about how much you spend on a funeral, its about the people who are involved” Alan prides himself on being the only person you will be dealing with at every stage of the arrangement, and contactable whenever you need him “Some families need more time than others, having my own funeral directors means I can give as much time, and care to each family as required” For Alan the importance of being able to deliver a funeral at an affordable cost without compromising on quality or professionalism is key “I have created a funeral package which is affordable to everyone, however if you wish to add to it you can”

Alan Gannon & Sons also offer direct Cremations Direct cremations have always been around but are now increasing in popularity due to its simplicity and cost. This is aided with celebrities such as david bowie and author Anita Brooker opting for this. A direct cremation is where a deceased is transported from the mortuary directly to the crematorium within a few days following the death. It is a minimalist option, whereby there are no attendance, procession, or ceremony. A direct cremation should not be considered a ‘Cheap Funeral’, simply it removes the constraints and stress of making prompt formal decisions. This then allows families to arrange more fitting memorial service or reception at a time, and place more suited for all to attend, if desired. Alan Gannon & Sons believe in compassion, a personal service and putting families first. Alan says “I’m in a position of trust when families are at their most vulnerable. Something I hold with high regard, I cannot let them down”.
