March 2021

2018/2019 Southern League Champions 2019/2020 National League South play off winners. This week saw us navigate “lockdowniversary”, a whole year since our places of work closed and our kids (on and off) were sent home to learn. Football closed its doors to supporters (aside from a brief lifting of the regulations) and clubs tried to batten down the hatches in the same way that cruise ships sheltered from the weather in Weymouth bay. Our thoughts are with families affected by Covid throughout the Terras supporting world and beyond. That we still exist let alone continue to battle for points in the top division of non-league football remains something we should all be massively proud of. Have we all agreed on the best way forward so far this season? Absolutely not. But debate can be healthy if its done respectfully and with a positive goal in mind. We are still patiently waiting official confirmation of what the culmination of this season will look like at step 1. I share everyone's frustration about the length of time the FA are taking to make a decision. When you think that Macclesfield didn’t get off the start line and Dover have stopped playing their matches, it's a miracle the other clubs (ourselves included) are fulfilling fixtures. My dream scenario is no relegation. Of course it is. I want us to be in the top tier next season. But I would caveat that with us finishing lower mid table as well. You never know when a curve ball is coming from the FA so let’s take that possible stress away. I think that would be a fair reflection on the way our season has panned out and a good platform to try and do even better in 2021/2022.

Chairman's Update Hello again everyone and welcome to the March edition of your Terras Supporters Club Newsletter. I hope you are all keeping well and managing to stay busy? This current set of restrictions upon our liberties to control the spread of the dreaded virus has been particularly difficult to endure for many people. Not being able to see our loved ones on a regular basis, meet up with friends and all the other myriad things we take for granted has been tough in many different ways. The mental health and wellbeing of us all is to be taken seriously and not summarily dismissed with a trite meme on social media playing it down. I have said many times before and feel it is worth repeating, it is important we all continue to look out for each other, now more than ever, with finishing line so tantalisingly close. I can only speak for myself on this next subject, football on TV! I’ve had enough! I crave the fresh air, the atmosphere and the banter of live football, to name just three! I save myself for the Terras home TV games, but even then, I’m jumping up and shouting at the telly, pacing round the room, something I would never do watching a common all garden premier league game! I’m not sure how healthy all that is? Anyway, the point is, the sooner this season is over the better, though let us not wish our lives away! Like everyone, I was eagerly awaiting the much vaunted ‘roadmap’ out of this, what we all hope will be the last lockdown, hoping that we could at least catch one more game before the end of the season. But sadly it is not to be and we will have to wait. So in the meantime, please continue to stay safe, look out for each other and when your time comes, make sure you get the vaccination. We all very much look forward to seeing you all again for our pre-season games. Until then, thank you for your continued and fantastic support.

Best wishes to you all. Pete Nash Chairman, ‘The Terras Supporters Club’ (WFCSA)

Your Top 3 Terras Goals - seen in the flesh… It's a lockdown thing I think. But I have found myself staring out of the window thinking of the best goals I have seen us score for real (not on Youtube). I had a list but then having read through the forum post I created on the topic found myself changing it… and then changing it again. Here are my top 3 with your lists overleaf… feel free to argue and email over wher you think we might have got this one wrong ! 1. 2. 3.

Mark Travers vs Bishops Stortford (away) A lob from his own half by a debutant goalkeeper? That will do nicely. Plus I am on the video footage leaping about. Matt Wright vs Bedford (home) Left foot right foot, thigh, chest, head… lots of juggling before he got bored and leathered it home. A treat on a cold day. Darran Rowbotham vs Ashford Town (home) An FA Trophy master class. He stepped off it a bit as the ball bobbled before cutting across it and sending it flying in the bottom left hand corner at the car park end.

Your Top 3 Terras Goals Matt Pitman send me his three in from Australia… 1. 2. 3.

It has to be out Greeno away at Weston Super Mare (half way Line from kick off restart). Darren Powell away at Dartford (free kick from halfway line) and... a third is tricky. Was Darran Rowbotham’s v Ashford in the Trophy really that good or is our mind playing tricks?

Matt, I don’t think your mind is playing tricks. Quite a few people remember the Rowbotham strike as a wonder goal. Trowbridge Terra from the forum tells us…

This is my 24th season as a fan so some of my memories are a bit more recent than others, but the three that immediately spring to mind are: 1.

2. 3.

Matty Bound's penalty vs St Albans in the 2006 title decider has to be one of the best I've ever seen, quite simply for the fact that Paul Bastock in the St Albans goal basically made the decision to dive as far away from the ball as possible, given how fast it was travelling! From a skill perspective, Stuart Fleetwood's second goal in the 6-2 win vs Basingstoke (4th February 2017). Beautiful lob from about 25 yards out. From an emotional perspective, probably also need to include Harry Baker's winner vs Salisbury in the 4-3 epic in January 2019. Manic celebrations in the torrential rain!

Not being there for the Baker goal haunts me to this day! That’s a great choice. Bob Swiggs Lives, a long time forum posters comes up with 2 you may remember and one from our favourite Belgian.

1. 2. 3.

Ben Smith's wonder goal. Either of Lee Elam's two length of the field runs and goals away at Crawley. In the 1950s Marcel Gaillard v Bedford. Our goalie drop-kicked it upfield - Gaillard (a natural left-footer) let it bounce and then while facing his own goal, hit it right-footed over his left shoulder from around 25/30 yards into the top corner. I've watched football everywhere at every level and still never seen anything to equal that.

Finally for this month Alex from the forum recounts his top 3…

1. 2. 3.

Martin Underhay’s goal against Kings Lynn after an amazing number of passes and numerous ole’s from behind the goal and It’s just like watching Brazil. A similar goal scored by Dave Puckett. Fantastic football ended with a smart header. Unfortunately I can’t remember the opponents. Thunderbolt from a trialist called Boris Pesic against Orient in a pre season friendly. He received the ball in midfield and saw there were no passing options. Bang, back of the net.

Back with more next month. Martin Underhay is a name that has come up a lot in this feature so far and it's great to see these wonderful players so fondly remembered. If you missed sharing you 3 goals on the forum, please email them in to us at membership@wfcsa.co.uk .
