JULY 2018 NEWSLETTER

THE REPORTER

Grace and peace to you from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Next month, on Sunday August 12 at 10:00 a.m. at the Morton Center, West Nidaros will gather for worship with members from East Nidaros, Renner and Baltic Lutheran churches to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the original Nidaros Congregation. The last few months the planning committee has been meeting to make final plans for the celebration. As we plan for the day, I’ve personally been reflecting on the significance of this celebration. What I’ve realized is that 150 years is nothing to sneeze at…it is a significant milestone. For comparison consider the following: The state of South Dakota is 129 years old, and the city of Sioux Falls was incorporated on March 3, 1883 making its charter as a city 135 years old. The year the Nidaros Congregation was founded was the same year that Thomas Edison applied for his first patent, it was also the year that saw the 14th amendment adopted, President Andrew Johnson impeached, and the election of President Ulysses S. Grant. There is no doubt that a lot has changed in 150 years, we no longer arrive at church on horseback, or in a horse drawn wagon. But what hasn’t changed is why we gather. The same thing that led to those early settlers gathering together and forming a new congregation is the same thing that continues to lead us to gather in worship, God’s Word of promise in His Son Jesus Christ. That same Word continues to be proclaimed every week in each of the congregations that claim heritage from the original Nidaros Church. This means our great heritage is not what we often think, our great heritage is not a building, a location, a grandparent or great grandparent, our great heritage is and has always been the Word of God in Jesus Christ. This is why we will gather on August 12, together with 4 congregations, together as one congregation in Jesus Christ. Gathered to hear God’s Word of promise for us, the same Word that O.O. Sando preached, yet we, like our ancestors will hear this Word anew and it will do the same thing is has always done, it will bring us to death so that it might raise us up, a NEW creation in Jesus Christ. So, let’s celebrate 150 years of proclamation, 150 years of Word and Sacrament ministry, and see how God’s Word is alive, active among us, doing that for which is has been sent. Blessings to you all. In Christ, Pr. Jared Rakness

For Body Mind and Spirit Health Effects of Sitting Edward R. Laskowski, M.D. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/expertanswers/sitting/faq-20058005 When you sit, you use less energy than you do when you stand or move. Research has linked sitting for long periods of time with a number of health concerns. They include obesity, increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels, that make up metabolic syndrome. Too much sitting overall and prolonged periods of sitting also seem to increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer. Any extended sitting — such as at a desk, behind a wheel or in front of a screen — can be harmful. An analysis of 13 studies of sitting time and activity levels found that those who sat for more than eight hours a day with no physical activity had a risk of dying similar to the risks of dying posed by obesity and smoking. However, unlike some other studies, this analysis of data from more than 1 million people found that 60 to 75 minutes of moderately intense physical activity a day countered the effects of too much sitting. Another study found that sitting time contributed little to mortality for people who were most active. More study is needed on the effects of sitting and physical activity on health. However, it seems clear that less sitting and more moving overall contribute to better health. You might start by simply standing rather than sitting when you have the chance or finding ways to walk while you work. For example: • Take a break from sitting every 30 minutes. • Stand while talking on the phone or watching television. • If you work at a desk, try a standing desk — or improvise with a high table or counter. • Walk with your colleagues for meetings rather than sitting in a conference room. • Position your work surface above a treadmill — with a computer screen and keyboard on a stand or a specialized treadmill-ready vertical desk — so that you can be in motion throughout the day.The impact of movement — even leisurely movement — can be profound. For starters, you'll burn more calories. This might lead to weight loss and increased energy. Also, physical activity helps maintain muscle tone, your ability to move and your mental well-being, especially as you age.
