THE REPORTER

Grace and peace to you from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. The other night Jessi and I were looking at our calendar for the summer. As we went through each week and weekend we realized that our summer is already full of scheduled events and activities a full month and a half before it begins. Between the kids activities, weddings, family reunions, and many other things, our summer is pretty full. While this is both exciting, because of all of the fun things we have scheduled, it is also a bit overwhelming to realize that we have very little time that is un-scheduled. I have been told that this only gets worse the other the kids are. As I was pondering our upcoming summer, I began to wonder, where does church and worship fit in the midst of all of this? It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of summer, or any other time of the year for that matter, and put worship on the back burner. What struck me is how the law of our calendar’s overtakes us. We go from one event to another, from one ballfield to the next until we are rundown and exhausted. What do we miss when we get so busy we have a hard time making worship? What’s missing is God’s Word of promise in Jesus Christ. Specifically, we do not hear the promise of forgiveness. The promise that our schedules and all the things we do are not our identity. Our identity is given in the promise of baptism, a free gift from Jesus Christ, that we are His and He is ours. That He has taken our sins setting us from the power of sin and death. This is no small promise that we can live without, it is the promise that gives us peace, peace with God, peace in ourselves. This summer I encourage you to not neglect the hearing of this promise. Seek it out no matter where you are, if you are visiting family in another town, state, country, find a place to worship, a place to hear God’s Word. For God’s Word will give you all you need for each day, no matter how busy it maybe. Here’s to a great summer! In Christ, Pr. Jared Rakness
