THE REPORTER

Grace and peace to you from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Psalm 88:1-2 O Lord, God of my salvation, when, at night, I cry out in your presence, let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry. Where do we turn when we are in trouble? Whom can we call upon when life itself seems to be slipping away? In this old life we don’t need to go looking for problems. Troubles will always find us, whether it’s a flooded basement, the inability to plant a field, or the uncertainty of one’s financial future, a marriage that is failing, a heartbreaking medical diagnosis, the truth is troubles have a way of ending up come into our lives. When we have these troubled times, where are we to turn? One place to turn are the words of the Psalmist. Here we are witnesses to great prayers, prayers of thanksgiving and praise, and prayers of lament and heartache. One such psalm is Psalm 88, it is a psalm of lament, it is the Psalmists complaint to God. It begins with the writer bringing his words to the God of his salvation, and asking that God would let his prayer come before Him, and to incline God’s ear to the Psalmists cry. The rest of the psalm is filled with lament, it is an honest confession of struggle, of suffering, of a person who is drowning in troubles. And this is what God wants, no matter if you are in a good place or bad, God wants you to bring your laments and your praises before Him. When you pray speak honestly about where you are, if you are in a troubled place speak honestly in prayer to God. Tell God your troubles, and hear God’s response to you: you are mine, I have claimed you, I have called you, and no matter what befalls you, there is nothing that can separate my love from you. In this promise may you have the peace of God which surpasses all understanding. In Christ, Pr. Jared Rakness

Educated by Tara Westmor: This is an award winning memoir about a girl who set foot in a classroom for the first time when she was 17 years old.
