FRI, JUL 4 | 8PM AND 10PM
Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,
I recently returned from the PBS Annual Meeting in Atlanta, where leaders from more than 150 stations came together to share insights and shape the future of public media. The experience reaffirmed for me that public media is more essential than ever. Beyond producing trusted programs, we create space for meaningful dialogue, education, and connection.
One of the most memorable moments came from WEDU’s own Liz Sembler. Liz has been serving on the WEDU PBS Board since 1993, including as chair from 2001 to 2003. She has served on the board of America’s Public Television Stations (APTS), a national advocacy organization, and now serves on the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), where she was chair from 2014 to 2016.
Here are a few inspiring highlights from the speech Liz shared with public media leaders.
How did you discover PBS?
In the early 1970s, as an 11-year-old, I’d come home after school and watch ZOOM, a creative, educational show made by kids, for kids. I was hooked.
How did you first get involved with WEDU?
My children loved watching PBS KIDS, and WEDU was our local station. The kids are grown now, but PBS’s children’s programming remains excellent. In recent years, its educational outreach has grown dramatically, developing partnerships with parents, teachers, and students across the 16 counties served by WEDU.
What excites you about WEDU’s work?
I’m inspired by the Youth Media program, where local students create original audio, video, and images to share their stories. It’s a powerful way WEDU helps young people find their voices. I also value Florida This Week, which brings together journalists, academics, and public officials for thoughtful, civil discussions on Florida’s most pressing issues—something increasingly rare today. And our partnership with PBS enables us to share high-quality national content with our viewers, shows that educate and inspire me. My favorite PBS show is NOVA!
What have you learned from your CPB board service?
Through visits to stations nationwide, I’ve seen the powerful impact of public media in communities. I’m proud of CPB’s commitment to education, civic engagement, and responsible use of federal funding. For nearly 60 years, CPB has ensured access to educational, non-commercial content that reflects the full diversity of America.
At WEDU, we take that mission seriously. Public media is here to serve, to listen, and to lead with integrity.
Liz reminds us how a single show can spark a lifelong connection to public media. Her journey—from viewer to national leader—reflects how WEDU and PBS continue to inform, inspire, and empower individuals across generations.
I’d love to hear about your favorite PBS show. Email me at paulgrove@wedu.org
