A Message from Paul Grove
Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,
If you’ve ever felt a connection to your hometown, a favorite roadside diner, or a slice of “old Florida,” our latest documentary will speak to your heart.
Our Vanishing Americana: Florida is a WEDU original film featuring 30 short stories about people who still run small-town institutions passed down through generations. These places line the backroads, coastlines, and historic main streets of our state.
After watching the film with my wife, Michelle, we felt the urge to hop in the car and meet these remarkable Floridians ourselves.
From a family-run pharmacy-turned-diner in Palm Beach to a mini-golf course in Fort Walton Beach and a Jacksonville BBQ joint dating back to the 1930s, these places offer more than nostalgia. They connect us to Florida’s true character.
You’ll also meet a granddaughter preserving her grandfather’s legacy in Everglades City, a couple restoring a storm-damaged opera house in Arcadia, and a colorful cast that includes cowboys, skunk apes, and a whole lot of Elvis. And bring your appetite—Florida’s past is flavored with smoked sausage, citrus, milkshakes, and pie.
Keeping a family business going across generations isn’t easy, but it’s deeply meaningful. These stories reveal the heart and grit needed to carry Florida’s traditions forward.
The film stirred my own memories. In the mid-1990s, as a young producer at WEDU, one of my first projects was At Garden’s Gate, a gardening series filmed at Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven. With its botanical beauty, water ski shows, and old Hollywood charm, it became an award-winning international series. Though the park closed in 2009, the memories remain vivid.
Another personal favorite is El Cap Restaurant in St. Petersburg. I discovered it as a sports reporter at WTSP, Channel 10. A longtime favorite of baseball players, umpires, and fans, El Cap has served juicy burgers since 1962. I still stop in today.
This film brought those memories rushing back. I hope it stirs something in you too.
Do you have a Florida memory you’d like to share? I’d love to hear it. Email me at paulgrove@wedu.org.
Watch Our Vanishing Americana: Florida on Monday, June 23 at 9 p.m. on WEDU. Let’s celebrate the spirit of Florida together.
Onward and upward,

A Simple Gift for the Future of WEDU PBS MANY WAYS TO GIVE
Did you know that you can name WEDU PBS as a beneficiary of a bank account, retirement account, IRA, life insurance policy or insurance annuity?
Beneficiary designations are an easy way to support WEDU without going through the estate planning process. And if your plans ever change, you can redesignate your beneficiaries.
It is also good practice to review your beneficiary designations every two to three years to be certain your assets will reach your intended recipients. This is especially important since these designations take precedence of your will when the time comes to pass along these assets. This is also why beneficiary designations are an effective and easy way to leave a gift.
WEDU Arts Plus has been named Best TV Show in Tampa Bay Magazine Best of 2025 issue for the second consecutive year. Congratulations to the entire WEDU Arts Plus team and everyone who contributes to the success of this award-winning series.
