Getting to know JEFF SPARLING, New Chair of WEDU PBS’ Board of Directors
The WEDU PBS Board of Directors is comprised of community leaders with expertise in a wide range of areas, including education, finance, law, fund development, and business management. We welcome Jeff Sparling as the new Board Chairperson. He begins his two-year term on October 1, 2024.
Jeff, the youngest of eight children, was born in Michigan and spent his early years between Michigan and Florida, as his father had businesses in both states. He attended high school and college in Michigan, where he met his wife, Mei-Mei, at the University of Michigan. They have been married for 38 years and have three grown children and four grandchildren. Jeff began his career with Ernst & Whinney in Michigan and relocated to Florida in 1998. He has lived in the Tampa Bay area for about 38 years. Jeff is an avid University of Michigan sports fan, having held football season tickets for 15 years and regularly attending home games, including witnessing their national championship win last year.
How did you become involved with WEDU?
Longtime board member Dick Dobkin, who was the Tampa Office Managing Partner at Ernst & Young, invited me to join the WEDU Audit Committee in 2013 when I was a partner in the Tampa office. I served on the Audit Committee for a few years before joining the Board of Directors.
What is the most important thing WEDU does for our community?
I believe educating youth in our communities is the most important contribution. I’m passionate about supporting kids in our communities. While I don’t have young children watching kids’ programming anymore, I’m glad that WEDU focuses on programs that educate young people.
What are some of your favorite programs on WEDU?
I didn’t grow up watching much television. My father worked hard and was always on the move, so I stayed active and spent most of my time outdoors playing sports. Now that I’m retired, I have more time to watch TV, including WEDU! I enjoy watching Antiques Roadshow and America’s Test Kitchen, as well as Rick Steves’ Europe since my wife and I love to travel.
Are you involved with other organizations in our community?
During my 37-year career with Ernst & Young, I have actively participated in various community organizations, including youth sports, religious, educational, and nonprofit organizations. Currently, I serve as the Board Chair for USF Health Professions Conferencing Corporation (d/b/a CAMLS) and sit on the Board of Directors for Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School.
What is something you would like to share with WEDU members?
I am humbled to serve as the Board Chair at WEDU PBS. Many people are passionate about and supportive of WEDU’s mission. I look forward to advancing WEDU into the future and building on the great legacy established by those before me
We will share periodic updates from the WEDU Board in the months ahead. If you would like to contact Jeff Sparling or share something with the WEDU Board of Directors, email board@wedu.org

WEDU PBS Board of Directors Spotlight: OCTOBER 2024
Brian Butler
How long have you been serving on the WEDU Board of Directors?
I believe this is my 4th year on the WEDU Board of Directors. Why did you decide to join the Board?
Public television has always been a big part of my life. As a young child, I witnessed my grandparents watch PBS News Hour daily. As a soldier moving around the country with my children and later calling Tampa Bay home, PBS has been a constant.
From Wishbone and Arthur to Finding Your Roots and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, PBS has helped my family learn and grow.
What is your favorite PBS program?
PBS News Hour and Finding Your Roots
What are your hobbies and passions?
Serving in the community, helping others, golfing, fishing and hunting.
What are you looking forward to for WEDU’s future?
I look forward to attracting younger people to participate in our discussions regarding programming and the value that we offer to families. I also look forward to enhancing partnerships that expand viewership so that more residents benefit from WEDU programming.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Schatmeyer was active in ocean sailboat racing and, more recently, became a proficient ham radio operator. He was an avid PBS viewer and deeply passionate about national current affairs programming, such as PBS News Hour, Frontline, and Washington Week. He also enjoyed programs on history, technology, and the environment, including Ken Burns documentaries, Nature, and NOVA. His commitment to these programs led him to become a WEDU Visionary by creating the Dr. John F. Schatmeyer Endowment Fund to ensure their continued presence on WEDU PBS.
