Sometimes, great adventures are closer than you think! I recently discovered this when my book club took a field trip to Florida Southern College in Lakeland. After reading a book about Frank Lloyd Wright, we decided to explore the history of his unique campus architecture. To our amazement, we
learned that Florida Southern is home to the world’s largest collection of Wright’s commissioned work!
As the VP of Communications at WEDU PBS, I am privileged to lead community engagement and content promotion efforts. One of the best parts of my job is promoting our locally produced programs that reflect the vibrancy of our region. This month, I’m excited to introduce two new local productions that do just that.
The latest addition to our award-winning Greater series will explore the city of Lakeland. Greater Lakeland premieres September 19, at 8:30 p.m. on WEDU PBS. The first episode delves into the origins of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture at Florida Southern College. In the coming months, future episodes will highlight Lakeland’s swan story, local women in aviation, the iconic Silver Moon Drive-In Theatre, and the significance of nature in the city. Each month, you can look forward to a new story on-air and online. This original WEDU series is made possible through a partnership with Lakeland Regional Health.
At 9 p.m. on September 19, we’ll present The Art of Sound: The Story of the University of Tampa’s Soaring Bell Tower, a special documentary about Ars Sonora, the world’s most technologically advanced bell tower at the University of Tampa. This film takes viewers on a journey from the Paccard Bell Foundry in Annecy, France—where the tower’s 63 bells were cast—to Tampa, where state-of-the-art technology brought this instrument to life. Standing 105 feet tall, the Ars Sonora is not just an engineering marvel but also a beautiful focal point for the University and the broader community, offering a unique blend of art, architecture, and music.
We’re excited to share stories highlighting our area’s historical and cultural significance. I encourage you to tune in and explore both exciting local programs. Your support helps bring these inspiring stories to life.
Thank you for being a valued WEDU member.
Sincerely,
Marti Galloway VP of Communications WEDU PBS

And for those of you who are age 72+, QCDs count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) each year.
