PREMIERE

Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,
PBS boasts a rich tradition of educational programming in communities across the nation. The education team at WEDU PBS connects viewers with quality PBS resources in communities throughout the 11 counties our department serves on the central Florida Gulf Coast. Once called “beyond broadcast,” these days our initiatives are just as likely to be “supplemental to the
stream,” especially with PBS KIDS, since our youngest viewers are the original digital early adopters!
It’s a pretty sweet gig. PBS KIDS shows, digital games, and downloadable activities are well loved by early learners—and their parents. In 2022, PBS KIDS was again named the most educational media brand, with 82% of parents agreeing that PBS KIDS is a safe and trusted source for kids to watch television and play digital games and apps. PBS Stations around the country reach more children, and more parents of children, in low income homes than any children’s TV network. And 84% of parents say PBS KIDS helps prepare children for success in school. Popular shows like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and the newest hit Work It Out Wombats! feature fun animated worlds that deliver engaging narratives built on underlying educational frameworks. PBS KIDS producers make our job easy!
WEDU also engages middle and high school in two essential ways. PBS LearningMedia provides curated FREE, standards-aligned videos and interactives for Florida students (and lesson plans for educators). More than 1.6 million users view PBS LearningMedia resources each month, with high school in history (Ken Burns in the Classroom, US History Collection) and science (Nature, NOVA) being the most popular content areas on the platform. Sarah Keith, WEDU’s Education Training Specialist, provides professional development opportunities for preK to grade 12 educators to utilize PBS LearningMedia in their classrooms.
Most recently, WEDU staff Education Program Specialist Latoya Desamour implemented locally a successful youth media program developed by our sister station KQED in San Francisco. The Youth Media Challenge invites middle and high school students to create their own media and share it with a national audience. The program promotes both media literacy and civic engagement, as students research topics that are important to them and share their voices with broad audiences through videos and podcasts. And that’s not all! With bilingual Education Coordinator Anaida Ruiz-Leon, WEDU PBS now offers education programs in English and Spanish, so audiences can participate in their primary language. We invite our young learners and families to join these experiences live and in person. ¡Al fin y al cabo, es un gran trabajo!

DOG DAYS AT WEDU
Dachshund Adoption, Rescue and Education (DARE) recently visited the WEDU Studios for a photo shoot for their annual pet calendar.
PHOTO: King Jax, age 16, was so sweet and patient!
What he does at WEDU: I was hired as a Security Officer, and my primary duties include deterring criminal activity by adhering to the station’s security measures, reviewing video surveillance equipment to identify odd behaviors, patrolling the property, and only providing property access to authorized individuals.
Time dedicated: Almost two years.
Hobbies & passions: I'm a creative and practical person and like doing things with my hands. I'm an outgoing person who enjoys socializing and hanging out with friends.
I mainly enjoy being physically active by spending a lot of time playing sports and team games. I enjoy being part of the fitness industry (as a certified fitness trainer), mentoring and guiding anyone in need of help to reach their intended goals.
Favorite PBS program: I like to watch The Bob Ross Experience and This Old House.
I like being surrounded by people with very little fear or respect for the past—in a positive way. They appreciate everything that's been done, but constantly look for how to do it better. When you lead with what's possible, and how you create value for people, it's energizing. Being around that kind of energy and inspiration has allowed me to think bigger than I would have ever thought possible.

Over time and during conquest, Texas Mexican food (not tex-mex!) sustained Native American memory and identity. Cooking foods like nopalitos, deer, mesquite and tortillas, indigenous women led the resistance against colonization. It’s the "comida casera," (home cooking) of today’s Texas Mexican American and Native American families. Women chefs, artists and community leaders in Corpus Christi, Brownsville and Harlingen share intimate food experiences that shape who they are today, facing a history of discrimination, dispossession and violence.
